Rahu in Modern Times: ShadowPlanets & Global Chaos

In this teaching, Dr. Robert Svoboda applies the lens of Rahu—a shadow planet in Vedic astrology—to understand the disorientation and contradictions of our current world. Rahu, born from the myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, represents obsession with image, immortality-seeking, grandiosity, and confusion about truth. The United States is currently in its third major Rahu cycle (2015–present), manifesting as extreme wealth concentration, spiritual inflation, and governance by figures embodying Rahu's characteristics. Svoboda offers practical antidotes: alignment with Ayurveda, community, nature connection, and disciplined focus on lasting values rather than shadow-images.

What Is Rahu in Vedic Astrology?

Rahu is one of two shadow planets (the other being Ketu) in classical Indian astrology, not a physical celestial body but a mathematical point of intersection between lunar and solar orbital paths. Unlike planets that have explicit rulerships or fixed natures, Rahu operates as a principle of distortion, illusion, and obsessive desire. According to Vedic cosmology, Rahu is headless—a being without direct perception or grounding, acting purely on hunger and appetite.

Dr. Svoboda frames Rahu as the archetypal force of mistaking shadows for reality. In his direct language: "Human beings are being strongly influenced by shadows, in particular the shadows on their screens. Yes, those are colorful shadows and they're back-lit, but they're still shadows. They're representations of reality that claim to be real, when in fact they're simply shadowy images. Image more than actual reality is what Rahu is all about." This distinction between substance and representation becomes central to understanding Rahu's contemporary grip.

The Cosmic Origin of Rahu: The Churning of the Ocean of Milk

Rahu's mythology illuminates its nature. In the Hindu creation narrative, when the devas and asuras (gods and demons) churned the cosmic ocean to obtain amrita (the nectar of immortality), the divine physician Dhanvantari emerged carrying the precious elixir. Rahu, an asura, disguised itself to drink from the nectar, gaining immortality. When the sun and moon detected the deception and severed Rahu's head, the being could not die—hence the archetypal image of a headless, eternally hungry ghost forever chasing what cannot be fully consumed or retained.

This myth encodes Rahu's core drives: the hunger for immortality, the willingness to deceive and transgress boundaries to obtain it, and an unslakeable appetite that no achievement can satisfy. Rahu represents not honest ambition but scheming, grandiosity, and the conviction that normal rules do not apply.

Rahu's Three Major Cycles in the United States

Svoboda identifies three pivotal Rahu periods in American history, each marked by upheaval and radical reconfiguration:

  • The Birth of the United States and Revolutionary War: The founding moment itself, characterized by revolutionary fervor, breaking from established authority, and the assertion of a new, unprecedented national identity.
  • 1895–1913: The Gilded Age and Progressive Era, marked by monopolistic wealth concentration (Rahu's obsession with acquisition), industrial chaos, and the rise of new financial oligarchs who rewrote the rules of commerce.
  • 2015–Present: The current cycle, now eight years deep, characterized by multi-polar confusion, algorithmic manipulation of reality, extreme wealth inequality, and the normalization of figures who embody Rahu's grandiosity and contempt for traditional boundaries.

Each Rahu cycle amplifies certain archetypal patterns: rapid change, the erosion of shared truth, the worship of novelty, and the ascendancy of individuals or forces willing to operate outside conventional moral frameworks.

How Does Rahu Manifest in the Individual?

On a personal level, Rahu-influenced people are characterized by several key traits. They are deeply interested in scheming—the manipulation of others and systems to gain advantage. They are obsessed with grandiosity, the need to be perceived as special, superior, or exempt from ordinary limitations. They pursue immortality in literal or symbolic forms: endless youth, unlimited wealth, permanent power, or legacy-immortality through accumulated possessions and influence.

Rahu also drives what spiritual traditions call "spiritual inflation"—the ego-driven delusion that one has transcended ordinary human constraints and operates under different rules. A Rahu-influenced person may become convinced of their own exceptional status and destiny, justifying ethically questionable behavior as necessary or enlightened.

Rahu in the Current Global Context: Image Over Reality

In our present era, Rahu operates most powerfully through screens and digital representation. The explosion of social media, algorithmic feeds, deepfakes, and curated personas means billions of humans consume images and narratives that claim to represent reality but are, in fact, highly constructed shadows. Svoboda emphasizes that what appears most vivid and engaging—the colorful, back-lit representations on our devices—may be furthest from what is actually true or real.

The current manifestation includes:

  • Extreme wealth concentration alongside mass poverty: Rahu's hunger creates vast imbalances, where a small fraction accumulates disproportionate resources while others face scarcity and instability.
  • Confusion around truth: Without a shared reality or trusted epistemic frame, populations become disoriented and vulnerable to manipulation by whoever commands the loudest platform.
  • Grandiosity in governance: Svoboda identifies the current U.S. president as an incarnation or embodiment of Rahu—a figure who operates with explicit contempt for norms, who makes claims to special exemption, and whose primary currency is the control of narrative and image rather than coherent policy or tradition.
  • Spiritual bypass and inflation: In spiritual communities, Rahu manifests as false enlightenment, ego-driven certainty disguised as wisdom, and the abandonment of ethics in pursuit of transcendence or power.

Living Through Eight More Years of Rahu

Svoboda does not suggest that Rahu's influence can be escaped or negated. Instead, he offers practical antidotes for those seeking to remain grounded and healthy during this turbulent cycle:

Ayurveda as an anchor: The classical Indian system of medicine and life-science provides concrete, body-based practices that reconnect practitioners to natural law and bodily intelligence. Ayurvedic routines—eating seasonally, rising early, cleansing practices, and herbal support—create a counterbalance to the disembodied, image-driven nature of Rahu. The body becomes a reliable reference point when the mind and media landscape are saturated with illusion.

Sangha (community) as medicine: Isolation amplifies Rahu's influence; shared practice, accountability, and face-to-face relationship with others create natural resistance to Rahu's deceptions. Sangha reminds us that we are part of a larger body, bound by real obligations and interdependence rather than isolated consumers of images.

Focus on nature: Direct engagement with natural cycles, weather, seasons, and ecosystems—rather than mediated through screens—keeps awareness anchored in what is actually present. Nature does not lie; it operates according to unchanging principles that predate and will outlast human schemes.

Connection to a genuine guru: A real teacher—someone grounded in transmitted wisdom and personal realization—serves as a living counterpoint to false authorities and inflated self-images. The guru relationship is predicated on the student's willingness to be corrected, which is precisely what Rahu-influenced consciousness resists.

A vision of peaceful future: Rather than absorbing the chaos and doomscroll anxiety of the present moment, Svoboda suggests holding a clear, felt sense of a more peaceful, ordered future. This is not positive thinking or denial; it is a deliberate cultivation of what is actually possible and worth working toward, a way to direct will and imagination toward something other than distraction and shadow-chasing.

Why This Matters Now

Svoboda's framework is not deterministic. Rahu cycles have occurred before and will occur again. What matters is recognizing the current signature—the particular blend of delusion, grandiosity, and image-obsession that characterizes 2015–present—and choosing consciously how to relate to it. The confusing, multi-polar world is not an accident or anomaly; it is Rahu's nature made visible at scale. Understanding this pattern does not require belief in astrology; it simply requires recognizing that certain psychological and social forces are operating with particular intensity and that strategic countermeasures exist.

By anchoring in body, community, nature, genuine teaching, and a grounded vision of what is possible, individuals can navigate Rahu's eight remaining years without being colonized by its illusions or infected by its grandiose delusions.

Where to Go From Here

Explore Ayurvedic practices suited to your constitution and begin experimenting with seasonal eating, early rising, and simple detoxification routines. Seek out or deepen engagement with a genuine sangha—a community of practice that holds you accountable to something larger than individual appetite. Spend time in direct nature without technological mediation. If you have access to a real teacher or guru, increase your engagement with them and practice the art of being corrected. And finally, clarify for yourself what you actually want a peaceful future to contain—not as fantasy, but as a detailed, felt vision that can guide your choices in the present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rahu is a shadow planet in Vedic astrology representing obsession with image, grandiosity, scheming, and the confusion of representation with reality. It operates as a principle of distortion and illusion, particularly through screens and mediated narratives, making it highly relevant to modern digital culture.
According to Svoboda, the United States is in its third major Rahu cycle (2015–present), characterized by extreme wealth inequality, confusion about truth, and governance by figures who embody Rahu's contempt for norms and obsession with image and narrative control over substance.
People influenced by Rahu exhibit grandiosity, belief they are exempt from ordinary rules, obsession with schemes and manipulation, hunger for immortality or special status, and spiritual inflation—the ego's delusion that it has transcended ethical constraints.
Svoboda recommends anchoring in Ayurvedic practices, engaging deeply with sangha (community), spending time in direct nature, maintaining connection with a genuine teacher, and cultivating a clear vision of a peaceful future to counterbalance Rahu's disorientation and image-obsession.
In the Churning of the Ocean of Milk myth, Rahu disguised itself to drink the nectar of immortality. When discovered, it was beheaded but could not die—creating an eternally hungry, headless ghost that embodies insatiable appetite and the willingness to deceive for immortality.
Rahu thrives on representations and shadows that claim to be real. Digital screens present back-lit images and narratives that feel vivid and engaging but are constructed shadows—exactly what Rahu is about: image prioritized over actual reality.
According to Svoboda, the current Rahu cycle in the United States began in 2015 and will continue through approximately 2023–2024, spanning roughly eight years of heightened Rahu influence on American culture and consciousness.
