Breaking Free From Codependency: Why Helping Can Hurt

Picture a podcast studio in June 2023. Mark Groves has just brought on Melody Beattie, the author whose book Codependent No More reached millions of readers, and she is joking that she has finally learned enough about technology to join a video call on time. Then the conversation turns to a sentence that could serve as the thesis of the whole hour: most of us can barely control ourselves, and we cannot control other people, even when we are right and they are wrong. Codependency, as Beattie and Groves unpack it across this 56-minute episode, is the habit of losing yourself in the name of helping another person. It is a pattern that rarely announces itself, that often looks like generosity from the inside, and that Beattie argues can only truly begin to heal when attention returns to the self. What follows is a closer look at the ideas in that conversation, and at the life that gave them their urgency.

What does codependency look like from the inside?

The most useful thing Beattie does in this conversation is refuse to treat codependency as a villain's trait. She describes the line between being a caring person and being, in her own blunt phrasing, "obnoxiously codependent" as one that is genuinely hard to see. We meet someone, we want to help, we want to express affection. The trouble is that most of us were never given an internal off switch. Nothing inside us quietly asks how much we are giving, how much we are receiving, and whether the arrangement feels right.

She also names the moment that makes the pattern so sticky: the red flags. Beattie laughs at the way people, herself included, see a warning sign and move toward it anyway, convinced that this time will be different. The excitement itself becomes part of the hook. In the conversation she links that intensity to a dynamic she has seen repeatedly, where emotional pain and arousal fuse together. Her argument is that people can come to crave the charge of the drama, and then rely on that charge in place of connection. The result, she says, is a plan that does not hold up over a marriage, a relationship, or a parent-child bond. The jolt may feel like intimacy, but it is a poor substitute for it.

That self-image matters too. Codependent people often see themselves as the helpers, the savers, the ones who are healing the other person. Beattie's point is that this altruistic story can keep the pattern invisible, because the person playing rescuer rarely thinks of themselves as the problem.

Why does codependency feel like a slow boil?

At around the two-minute mark, Beattie offers the image that gives the episode its emotional weight. Put a frog in boiling water, she explains, and it jumps out. Put it in cold water and turn up the heat slowly, and it stays put until it cooks. She is clear that this is not her metaphor alone, but she uses it to describe what happens to most codependents: they are, in her words, "boiling to death in their relationships," and "the heat got turned up and they don't know how to get out."

"That's what happens to most codependents. They're boiling to death in their relationships. They don't know what's going on."

The point is not that codependent people are foolish. It is that gradual change is almost impossible to notice from within. Each concession looks reasonable. Each new demand looks like one more reasonable request. By the time someone asks, as Beattie puts it, where their life went, the pattern has been building for years. This is why the conversation keeps returning to awareness as the first move. You cannot step out of a pot you cannot feel getting hotter.

How did a judge's sentence turn into a life's work?

Beattie's authority on this subject comes from her own history, and she tells it plainly. She grew up in what she calls a very dysfunctional family, which she suggests is true of many of us. At 23, a judge sentenced her to treatment. She recalls him asking whether she knew she was responsible for her own behavior, and she admits that if she had been honest she would have said no. Nobody had ever taught her cause and effect. Her patterning, she says, taught her mainly to copy what she saw, including her father's alcoholism.

She spent eight months in treatment and says she did not really want to leave. It was, in her words, "my true home." She found spirituality there, along with an understanding of what had been wrong with her and what she would need to do to stay on a healthy track. She credits a counselor, Ruth Anderson, with showing her unconditional love during that time. Recovery itself was young in Minnesota then, and it was open to people her age in ways that felt new. Beattie notes that al-Anon, the family program where the terminology around codependency originally took shape, was not the glamorous part of recovery. As she puts it, that work was not "as sexy as having a rock bottom yourself."

After treatment she wanted to help other addicts the way her program had helped her. She waited for an opening, took a course at the University of Minnesota to become a counselor, and found that few women worked in treatment in Minneapolis at the time. Dating David Beattie, whose family had helped start a number of treatment programs in the state, led her to a job at Eden House. She took a secretarial position, and the director, Lorraine, soon gave her an assignment that changed everything. Under new government funding, Lorraine told her, the program had to start doing something for the families of addicts or it would lose its money. Beattie said she did not know what to do with family members. Lorraine's reply was that nobody else knew either, which was why she had been hired. Beattie took the task seriously.

What is the wounded healer, and why did it matter?

The work with families produced what Beattie calls the wounded healer phenomenon. In group meetings, women told their stories, and Beattie recognized her own marriage in many of them. One woman had five children, and her husband had been to prison twice. She ended up dying of natural causes, her heart worn down by years of pain, loss, and not knowing how to get out. Beattie describes hearing these accounts and thinking that the stories sounded like her own life. The healing did not come from the expert standing above the room. It came from the shared recognition that everyone in the room had been carrying the same weight.

This is the lineage behind the 1986 book, though Beattie is candid about its origin. "I did it very selfishly to save my own life," she told Mark Groves, explaining that it is easy to drown in other people's problems without realizing what is killing you. The episode notes add that the book was named one of four essential self-help books of all time by Newsweek in 2009, a recognition that reflects how far the groups' lessons traveled.

What does it mean to choose your own circumstance?

The later stretches of the conversation move from diagnosis to practice. Beattie's central claim is that people can only change what they can actually change, which is themselves. She returns to the idea that we are powerless over others and that caring for the self is where healing begins. For a codependent person, this is often the hardest lesson, because the instinct is to fix the other person's behavior as the path to peace. Beattie reframes that as a detour. The person who stops trying to manage someone else's choices has more energy to make choices of their own.

Groves also pushes the conversation into the present. Around the 30-minute mark, the discussion turns to technology and social media, and the question of how comparison and constant connection can become their own kind of enabling loop. The episode's framing is that real relationships with real people are where well-being lives. Beattie's own story gives that claim weight: the healing she describes happened in rooms full of other people telling the truth about their lives, not on a screen.

Where to go from here

If this conversation landed for you, the most direct next step is the full episode of The Mark Groves Podcast, which moves through codependency in relationships, the challenges of addictive and enabling cycles, and practical boundaries. Beattie's books are the natural companion. Codependent No More is the foundation, and the episode notes also point to Beyond Codependency, The Codependent No More Workbook, The Language of Letting Go, Playing It by Heart, and The Grief Club as further reading. Start with a single pattern you recognize, notice where the heat is rising, and ask the question Beattie keeps returning to: what do I actually control here, and what am I trying to control that belongs to someone else?

[0:00] the truth is most of us can barely

[0:02] control ourselves we cannot control

[0:05] other people I mean it is I think the

[0:08] ultimate human dilemma even if we're

[0:10] right and they're wrong even if they'd

[0:13] be happy if they did what we said we

[0:15] can't make them do it

[0:17] [Music]

[0:19] welcome back to another episode of The

[0:21] Mark Groves podcast today I am joined by

[0:24] exceptional author Melody Beatty welcome

[0:27] thank you I'm happy to be here I'm happy

[0:30] to have learned enough about technology

[0:32] to actually be here on time that makes

[0:35] me happy I learned that during covert

[0:37] well I appreciate you taking the time to

[0:40] do that because uh your book codependent

[0:43] no more touched my life oh my gosh

[0:45] probably about eight years ago and I

[0:47] felt like

[0:49] um no one had put in such succinct words

[0:52] uh what that Dynamic really is like I

[0:55] know that that that terminology

[0:56] originally sort of formed in Al-Anon and

[1:00] so I was just so grateful that you took

[1:02] what was an obvious pattern relationally

[1:04] it made it consumable for people who

[1:07] weren't just dealing with an alcoholic

[1:09] so thanks for putting those those words

[1:12] on a page I I did it very selfishly to

[1:14] save my own life

[1:16] I'm it's so easy to drowned in other

[1:20] people's stuff to just start drowning

[1:22] and not even know what's killing you

[1:26] you know to just get lost in it and all

[1:28] of a sudden you go where did my life go

[1:30] do I have a life is there a life for me

[1:33] what am I doing that's creating this and

[1:35] it can be absolutely stupefying

[1:38] when it when it hits us it's like this

[1:41] isn't my metaphor and everyone's

[1:44] probably heard it but it's if you put a

[1:48] frog in boiling water

[1:50] it will jump out it won't stay

[1:53] but if you put a frog in cold water and

[1:56] slowly turn up the heat it will stay in

[1:58] there and boil to death and that's what

[2:00] happens to most codependents they're

[2:02] boiling to death in their relationships

[2:04] they don't know what's going on the heat

[2:07] got turned up and they don't know how to

[2:08] get out yeah there seems to be in that

[2:11] pattern it's hard to see yourself in it

[2:14] I guess like most patterns you know and

[2:16] I like that analogy of it being a slow

[2:19] cook because it almost feels like when

[2:22] you start in a relationship like that I

[2:24] think often the code the side that's

[2:27] trying to please or solve or heal or

[2:30] will fix or whatever it is

[2:32] I think we kind of get caught in the

[2:34] self-image of that too like the

[2:36] altruistic sort of I'm helping I'm

[2:38] saving I'm Healed they're not is that

[2:42] something that like wait yeah what do

[2:43] you think about that you know there's

[2:44] such fine lines between being human and

[2:47] being obnoxiously codependent

[2:51] I've probably fallen over that line a

[2:54] few times I mean when we meet someone we

[2:56] want to be helpful we want to care we're

[2:58] interested in them and we want to

[3:01] express our affections for them

[3:04] but

[3:06] at some point we don't have an off

[3:08] switch that goes

[3:10] how much are you giving are you

[3:13] receiving and does this feel right to

[3:16] you does this feel good to you we do and

[3:18] and red flags were horrible with red

[3:21] flags we're like Bulls we think oh let

[3:24] me add them

[3:25] right it's so true we see it and we're

[3:28] like I'm gonna go towards it it's gonna

[3:30] be different this time this will be yeah

[3:32] it'll be different and it'll be exciting

[3:34] yeah it'll be hot it'll be hot it's

[3:38] interesting because that also feeds

[3:39] arousal often which I find is you know

[3:42] and interesting when we start to

[3:44] eroticize our pain and then use arousal

[3:46] like the pain comes and then when you

[3:48] experience arousal in our nervous system

[3:50] then gets calmed a bit through the

[3:52] connection but then we do the dopamine

[3:54] connection it follows yeah we we create

[3:58] our own trauma so we can dopamine it out

[4:01] but and that doesn't work as a long-term

[4:04] plan for a marriage or a relationship

[4:06] whether it's with a child or whether

[4:08] it's with a lover so what fuel I know

[4:12] you said that you wrote that book in a

[4:14] way to save your own life so can you

[4:16] give us some context to that because I

[4:17] know you've written many books now well

[4:19] that the history of that statement is

[4:22] this

[4:23] um I came from a very dysfunctional

[4:25] family myself which many of us have and

[4:28] I ended up a judge sentenced me to

[4:31] treatment at age 23. I still remember

[4:34] when he asked me do you know that you're

[4:37] responsible for your own behavior and if

[4:39] I would have been honest I would have

[4:41] said no wow because I I never learned

[4:45] that nobody ever sat me down and said if

[4:48] you do a b will happen

[4:50] um I I was not raised with cause and

[4:52] effect just you're just like your father

[4:56] he's an alcoholic I mean the patterning

[4:59] taught me what to do

[5:01] you know so I thought well mom doesn't

[5:02] love me so I'll use drugs and drink and

[5:05] then maybe and then maybe I can find my

[5:07] dad and he'll love me well that didn't

[5:09] happen either

[5:11] so I just went about my own thing of

[5:13] becoming addicted and I ended up in

[5:15] treatment

[5:17] sent there by a judge

[5:19] when I was 23 years old

[5:22] and I found everything I needed for the

[5:26] rest of my life in that Treatment Center

[5:29] I found my spirituality I found out what

[5:32] was wrong with me I found out what I

[5:33] needed to do

[5:35] to heal and stay on a track the rest of

[5:38] my life and I spent eight months in

[5:42] treatment and I didn't really even want

[5:44] to leave it was like that was my true

[5:46] home and my counselor bless her soul

[5:48] Ruth Anderson I mean she showed me such

[5:52] unconditional love when I was there

[5:55] so like many other recovering addicts in

[5:59] the whole thing of recovery addiction

[6:01] was new to young people back then I mean

[6:04] it was on fire back in Minnesota it was

[6:07] just a a was open to young people nobody

[6:12] was really talking about Al-Anon because

[6:14] that's not attractive

[6:17] that's not as sexy as having a rock

[6:20] bottom yourself yeah

[6:22] so I got out of treatment

[6:26] and I was so inspired I wanted to help

[6:29] other addicts the way my concert helped

[6:32] me the way this program had helped me I

[6:35] wanted to help them find themselves

[6:37] they're everything

[6:39] because really if you're an addict

[6:41] recovery is everything

[6:43] so I started applying for you know I

[6:45] went through the drill I waited two

[6:47] years I took a course at the University

[6:49] of Minnesota

[6:51] um to become a counselor but that was

[6:54] different times back then that was in

[6:56] the early 70s and there weren't that

[6:58] many women working in treatment not in

[7:02] Minneapolis Minnesota so I

[7:05] Flash Forward a few more months I had

[7:08] met and was dating a man David Beatty by

[7:11] then and he and his brothers had started

[7:15] most of the treatment centers in the

[7:19] state of Minnesota not Hazelton not any

[7:21] of those but the con

[7:23] um therapeutic communities and different

[7:25] places and so after watching me I'm

[7:29] successfully try and get hired as a

[7:31] counselor David said we'll talk to

[7:33] Lorraine who ran their program

[7:35] at Eden house and so I went to work for

[7:38] Eden house

[7:39] as a secretary

[7:42] and one day Lorraine came in and she

[7:45] said to me with our new government

[7:47] funding unless we start doing something

[7:50] for the families of the addicts we're

[7:52] going to lose our funding

[7:55] and I looked at I said I mean visions of

[7:58] my mother crossed through my mind I said

[8:00] I I I don't know what to do with them

[8:03] you know what would I do with the family

[8:05] members I said I'm new here she said

[8:08] well we don't know either and that's why

[8:10] you get the job so she tasked me with

[8:13] figure it out yeah figure it out so I

[8:16] did and I took it very serious it was

[8:18] never my dream to become the

[8:20] codependency lady that was that was not

[8:23] that was childhood that would that was

[8:27] not even in my adulthood dreams

[8:30] yeah I guess no one thinks like oh yeah

[8:32] I want to be known for healing

[8:34] codependency at the time when you're in

[8:37] the grips or witnessing it you're kind

[8:39] of like I just want to be done with it I

[8:41] did I just really really wanted to be I

[8:44] wanted that part of my life to be over

[8:47] but it didn't go away you know and that

[8:50] magic that happens

[8:53] they

[8:54] they call it the wounded healer

[8:56] phenomena began to take place in the

[9:00] groups and I could hear well the women

[9:03] in the group were telling their stories

[9:05] I could go wow my husband does the same

[9:09] I mean I could see the comparison in my

[9:12] own life on different levels like one

[9:14] woman had had

[9:17] what she had five kids and her husband

[9:19] had been to prison two times and she

[9:22] ended up ended up dying of natural

[9:25] causes she was just her poor heart was

[9:28] so burnt out from all the pain all the

[9:31] loss and not knowing how to get out of

[9:32] it

[9:33] and I kept thinking ah

[9:37] kind of sounds a little bit like me and

[9:39] my marriage I mean I would hear those

[9:41] things with with the the stories they

[9:43] were telling about their their deep

[9:45] unhappiness in the relationship they're

[9:48] feeling trapped they're not knowing what

[9:50] to do to get out and again remember it

[9:52] was a very different time for people

[9:54] back then even relationship Dynamics

[9:56] were much different

[9:58] all you have to do is watch TV Mary

[10:01] Tyler Moore from that time

[10:05] but slowly I began

[10:08] to see patterns and I became as obsessed

[10:13] with codependency as I had been with the

[10:16] alcoholic I mean I became absolutely

[10:19] obsessed with finding out why does it

[10:21] happen What Happens what do we do that

[10:23] keeps us doing it over and over and what

[10:26] can we do that's different that's better

[10:28] what choices do we have I became

[10:30] obsessed with everything about it just

[10:33] that's when my mind went with it and

[10:37] eight years later I finally wrote and

[10:39] sold the book I mean it was it was a

[10:42] long-term dream

[10:44] that eventually came to pass if you're

[10:48] someone who struggles with getting a

[12:41] like a a written form so other people

[12:44] can see themselves in the words and in

[12:47] the way that you tell stories and

[12:49] because I feel like you know having Dove

[12:51] deep into that subject and thought on it

[12:54] too and and through my own patterns much

[12:58] like you

[12:59] I just found that

[13:01] it seems like most of us if not all of

[13:04] us learn codependency and I think part

[13:07] of that is through just by no fault of

[13:11] anyone's but that our relationships

[13:13] really they're it was hard I think it's

[13:16] been hard for us to differentiate

[13:17] between interdependency and codependency

[13:20] because for survival based reasons

[13:22] marriage was not always about love only

[13:24] until recently was that really brought

[13:27] into the picture it was about survival

[13:29] but I've witnessed so many people

[13:31] especially women stay in relationship

[13:34] with people who have no interest in

[13:37] changing continue the exact same

[13:40] patterns or alcohol it's clear that

[13:43] they're going to continue this same

[13:45] pattern yeah like they're like this is

[13:46] the way it is and I see that on every

[13:49] side of every relationship of gender

[13:51] combination of course but you know I

[13:53] think women have just been more

[13:54] socialized through relationship and

[13:56] media and movies to like be the one

[14:00] who's more of the curator of the health

[14:02] of the relationship and of course safety

[14:05] depends on the relationship having as

[14:07] little emotional disruption as possible

[14:09] and so

[14:10] I look at all that and I'm like man

[14:12] we're we're in the we're in this

[14:14] opportunity where we now have more uh

[14:19] space or uh resources potentially to and

[14:25] to start businesses and all that kind of

[14:27] stuff to be able to liberate ourselves

[14:29] from these patterns because

[14:31] you know

[14:33] what you said about that woman's heart

[14:34] stopping from

[14:36] the heaviness of just the the slugging

[14:39] along just trying to make these

[14:42] relationships work that

[14:45] when one person is trying to do the work

[14:48] of two it's impossible yeah no it can

[14:50] get very burdensome and very

[14:52] disappointing about life

[14:54] and I think when we get thoroughly

[14:56] disappointed in life it that can be a

[14:59] very difficult thing

[15:00] to overcome they call it the Dark Knight

[15:03] of the soul but I was talking to an Uber

[15:06] driver yesterday

[15:08] I love Uber it's the best thing

[15:11] technology has brought us that and and

[15:13] being able to tour on a book this way

[15:17] um but I I said you know no one ever

[15:20] promised us life would be easy did they

[15:23] and she said no and I said on the other

[15:25] hand no one ever told us life would be

[15:27] this hard

[15:30] she said yeah you got it

[15:33] and I think for women well for men too

[15:36] because one thing can't change without

[15:38] it impacting the girls of another we

[15:41] know that that's how life works but um

[15:44] it's been hard for women I mean when my

[15:46] mom

[15:47] bless your soul

[15:50] was stuck raising four of us on her own

[15:54] women could not even buy a home they

[15:57] could not get a mortgage in their name I

[15:59] mean there there were so many legitimate

[16:03] traps that kept them engaged with people

[16:07] they did not want to engage with but

[16:09] they like you said they had to do it for

[16:11] survival to survive

[16:13] and I think we're still coming out of a

[16:16] lot of that backlash agreed in our world

[16:18] right now some people are a little more

[16:20] ahead of others some are behind but

[16:23] you know what are the rights of

[16:26] individuals regardless of their sexual

[16:28] orientation and their gender

[16:31] in our world and so as these are in

[16:34] fluxed relationships are in flux that's

[16:37] interesting men don't really know what

[16:39] their role is a lot of them I mean

[16:42] you're seeking out you're seeking out a

[16:44] new way which is good because I think

[16:46] that's in Eckhart Tolle's the new Earth

[16:49] he talks about the role in

[16:51] responsibility each of us will have as

[16:54] individuals not as people out there

[16:56] doing something huge and dramatic that's

[16:59] going to catch the world on fire but one

[17:02] by one finding new ways that actually

[17:04] work stepping out like you figuring out

[17:07] how to become an involved father that

[17:10] that's a new way that's stepping out

[17:12] that's helping to build our new Earth

[17:14] and I think as in this time right now of

[17:18] great confusion after three years of

[17:21] being on lockdown for many of us I think

[17:24] if

[17:26] like I said at the beginning of this

[17:27] interview we don't just think it's been

[17:29] hard it has been hard and we may want to

[17:32] come

[17:33] come out of this like someone being shot

[17:36] out of a cannon but I don't think that's

[17:39] how it's going to work I think we can

[17:41] look for a quieter more doable more

[17:44] heartfelt ways of expressing how we feel

[17:47] about our part in building the new Earth

[17:49] that we're all going to be living in

[17:51] with ourselves and our families

[17:54] that we are living in right now even

[17:56] though it doesn't feel much like life

[17:57] yeah it feels like a time of coming out

[18:00] that requires a lot of healing you know

[18:02] and as you're speaking to healing of

[18:05] self taking time with self being present

[18:07] with self

[18:09] and

[18:11] that can feel you know in the last three

[18:14] years I've witnessed a lot of pain like

[18:18] a lot of trauma a lot of division a lot

[18:21] of not understanding one another and I

[18:24] think it really what goes on in sort of

[18:26] the micro relational like vis-a-vis

[18:30] one-on-one experience that you know we

[18:33] struggle with in relationship

[18:34] communicating expressing ourselves

[18:37] understanding allowing another person to

[18:39] be a sovereign self and have their own

[18:41] opinions thoughts feelings and let God

[18:44] forbid and

[18:47] that has just become Amplified in terms

[18:50] of what we see on social media is the

[18:51] inability to do that even with someone

[18:54] we care about deeply

[18:56] because what I've witnessed is we have

[18:59] made like if you believe something

[19:01] politically or you believe something

[19:03] medically or or policy wise or whatever

[19:06] it is

[19:07] that I somehow then put you in a box of

[19:11] Who You must be and curiosity goes out

[19:14] the window you know from a

[19:16] survival-based perspective I just get to

[19:17] make all these assumptions that if you

[19:20] think this one thing then now you're on

[19:22] this other political ideology and and

[19:24] now we're against each other in I've

[19:27] seen how much the work for myself too

[19:30] has been really adjusting the way I

[19:33] perceive so I can stand shoulder to

[19:35] shoulder with someone

[19:37] as opposed to face to face as if it's

[19:39] oppositional just really realizing I

[19:42] have a friend who said that once told me

[19:44] to look at everyone as if they are God

[19:46] like that I can learn from them that I

[19:49] can grow from them now granted that can

[19:51] be pretty hard uh but it has shifted my

[19:56] life in a lot of ways because

[19:59] for a moment there in the height of the

[20:01] trauma and the fear I forgot to be

[20:05] curious you know in in the desire to

[20:07] defend what I felt was

[20:10] um I lived in Canada during that time

[20:12] and it was pretty crazy yeah and and I

[20:15] felt that like

[20:16] the lack of compassion to one another

[20:18] and and although I really tried to feel

[20:21] and and live compassion there was an

[20:24] angry part of me that had a very hard

[20:26] time that was like now is not the time

[20:28] for compassion like Now's the Time To

[20:30] Rage Against the Machine but that's not

[20:33] productive either you know anger is of

[20:35] course incredibly important to rescue

[20:37] oneself and to to draw lines in the sand

[20:40] boundaries are really important and

[20:42] fueled through anger that's why you're

[20:44] so sweet you're a Canadian yeah that's

[20:47] that's it it has sweetened your energy

[20:50] considerably I don't you you talk about

[20:53] having that anger but I don't see and

[20:56] feel that heartbeat of anger that so

[20:59] many men in the United States have now

[21:01] yeah I do see that definitely in the

[21:04] comments sometimes you know where

[21:05] there's like a a lot of name-calling a

[21:08] lot of very vicious right yeah it's not

[21:11] productive it's but they're so angry and

[21:14] you know I

[21:15] I was speaking to someone recently who

[21:17] was just like hating on Trump

[21:20] and

[21:21] I said listen I I don't care for the guy

[21:24] I don't he's not me I want to hang out

[21:26] with him his way of speaking is not my

[21:28] jam

[21:30] I am curious though because he's

[21:33] appealing to something in their Humanity

[21:35] that wishes to be witnessed and he knew

[21:38] that and so I'm like we have to be

[21:40] curious about it not just reject it

[21:42] because if we reject it we don't learn

[21:43] from it you know and based on all the

[21:45] writing you've done and all the work

[21:47] you've done

[21:48] where are we at please fix it Melody

[21:50] please fix it may day mayday

[21:54] I have to say when when Trump campaigned

[21:57] on the platform of making America great

[22:00] again

[22:02] and in the strange way that my first

[22:06] husband David Beatty helped make me

[22:09] great

[22:10] bye

[22:12] by his uncontrolled drinking and lying

[22:15] and acting out and me blaming him so

[22:18] long for what he was doing until I

[22:20] realized I had a part in it Trump

[22:22] affected me that way and the story of

[22:24] that will be in living by spirit

[22:28] um

[22:28] I

[22:29] I was pretty much dying

[22:32] when he got elected and when I've read

[22:36] on social media on my phone that he got

[22:39] elected I had a jolt of energy run

[22:43] through my entire body and I just went

[22:46] oh no no no no no no no no no no no no

[22:47] no no no no no

[22:49] and I had this feeling that it was a lot

[22:54] of women who had elected him that

[22:57] somehow still found his energy engaging

[23:01] well yeah I mean we're all attracted to

[23:03] things that we're not going to indulge

[23:05] in from time to time yeah

[23:07] so that's my theory is that he got all

[23:11] these women to do emotional thinking and

[23:15] engage with him

[23:16] um I don't know our whole look our whole

[23:19] look at the past is now getting

[23:21] challenged too because was JFK another

[23:25] president who did that did he play on

[23:27] his Charisma and

[23:30] Dynamic energy and his history in order

[23:35] to sway the public I I don't know I I

[23:38] was a kid back then and I wasn't doing

[23:40] this kind of deep thinking but I suspect

[23:42] that um

[23:44] Trump

[23:45] Ed up

[23:46] a lot of Dreams in people there's a new

[23:50] saying in business now over promise and

[23:52] under deliver right and a lot of people

[23:56] are attracted to that I'm personally not

[23:58] but a lot of people whom I suspect voted

[24:02] for Trump are very attracted to that I

[24:05] think there's a few parts in there that

[24:07] one is that I find that there probably

[24:10] for a lot of people has been a sense of

[24:12] Despair or hopelessness uh prior to even

[24:16] covet you know and and that that type of

[24:19] leader appeals to that like I'm gonna

[24:22] give you all these things and the

[24:25] world's corrupt and I'm not and I'm

[24:26] gonna drain the swamp and that's why you

[24:29] know when I as a Canadian

[24:31] I was super judgmental whenever he was

[24:34] elected and I was actually in Bali when

[24:36] he got voted in and I didn't expect I

[24:38] was like Hillary's got this and like I'm

[24:40] sure that's its own can of worms and I

[24:43] uh it's like how anyone took any

[24:45] perspective during covid

[24:48] I didn't I don't judge people who their

[24:50] natural reaction from being witnessing

[24:52] tons of fear is to go into survival mode

[24:55] and to disconnect from people they're

[24:57] taught are dangerous to them and I

[24:59] understand that now and I think of what

[25:02] you were saying about

[25:03] the recognition of being in relationship

[25:06] with someone who's an alcoholic and

[25:08] taking responsibility for your role in

[25:11] that I think that's that level of

[25:14] self-awareness and self-responsibility

[25:16] that

[25:17] when we wake up to it

[25:19] it is the Paradox of that is that it is

[25:22] both the most empowering thing this

[25:25] moment where you realize you are

[25:27] choosing your circumstances and the

[25:30] thing that I find very interesting about

[25:32] that point that I think is a point

[25:34] that's like in The Matrix where you

[25:37] decide

[25:38] am I going to rat pill my [ __ ] here or

[25:40] am I gonna blue pill and say which I see

[25:43] a lot of people choosing either of those

[25:47] you know and

[25:48] and you know there's that saying that we

[25:50] change when the pain comes so much that

[25:53] we have to or we learn so much we have

[25:55] to and I don't think that's actually

[25:57] necessarily true but humans are stubborn

[25:59] AF and we like to wait till the end to

[26:02] begin but I think the other part of that

[26:04] moment is that it is filled with immense

[26:08] grief

[26:09] because then we realize we've been

[26:11] choosing the circumstance or to

[26:13] participate in the circumstances that

[26:15] we're in and that I think I'm curious

[26:17] your thoughts because for me in my own

[26:20] experience of quitting drinking and in

[26:22] my own experience of witnessing people

[26:24] in that moment

[26:26] is I don't know I feel like we need a

[26:28] village in that moment to hold the grief

[26:30] with us to be like yeah we got you and

[26:33] is that maybe what an intervention is I

[26:35] don't know but yeah what do you think

[26:37] about about that I believe that we do

[26:40] not have nearly enough respect for grief

[26:44] and grieving in our world

[26:47] we mock old people

[26:50] we we mock our president when I mean I'm

[26:54] frankly astounded at what he's able to

[26:56] do at his age I feel like he should be

[26:59] hanging with his grandkids I'm like this

[27:01] poor guy he should be just reading

[27:03] stories to his grandkids on his knee

[27:06] but yet this this was his life path and

[27:10] you know a a good hand to him for being

[27:13] able to do it and you know I suppose in

[27:16] some ways that would go true for Trump

[27:17] too I can't believe he's still going

[27:19] that guy is yeah he's on another rocket

[27:22] ship I don't know what he's on probably

[27:23] Red Bull he's probably sponsored by Red

[27:25] Bull yeah I would I mean I used to

[27:28] skydive and those Red Bull guys are

[27:30] crazy

[27:32] um

[27:33] one of the most profound frightening

[27:35] prayers

[27:37] that I can choose to pray and sometimes

[27:40] I don't

[27:41] because God give me the courage to face

[27:43] the truth

[27:45] sometimes I'll choose to stay in denial

[27:47] because I don't have that horrendous

[27:50] deep grief flooding through me but when

[27:52] I'm I'm ready to step up and do the

[27:54] inner work that's the prayer I pray do

[27:57] you think the grief that comes in that

[27:58] moment is the necessary ingredients and

[28:02] alchemical process for the

[28:04] transformation or is that in Rage or

[28:06] it's our passage to surrender so the

[28:09] grief that floods us is the passage to

[28:12] accepting the prayer that you just

[28:14] prayed you prayed for the answer you got

[28:16] the answer you didn't like the answers

[28:18] so then you went on Instagram you know

[28:24] that's funny

[28:26] um like we were talking about before we

[28:28] started officially dove in My Hope Is

[28:31] that as the age of Aquarius gets

[28:33] underway we are going to instill better

[28:37] boundaries for our children on computers

[28:40] and apps and phones because like I also

[28:44] said at the beginning if parents can't

[28:45] teach themselves boundaries how can they

[28:47] help their kids I mean we need that the

[28:50] situation is out of control

[28:52] with social media right now and we need

[28:55] to do something yeah you said something

[28:57] profound before we hit record which was

[28:59] that when you were growing up and this

[29:01] is true for me too

[29:03] you weren't comparing yourself to other

[29:05] you were comparing yourself to self

[29:07] and

[29:09] that to me is is something that a lot of

[29:12] people even who grew up without phones

[29:14] and social media

[29:15] still they can't remember what it's like

[29:18] to just be with self to to set standards

[29:22] for self to set to see that you're out

[29:24] of alignment with your own Integrity but

[29:25] not to compare your life to these people

[29:28] who rent a Ferrari for a day and pretend

[29:30] they own it you know like

[29:32] there's just something really simple

[29:34] about that and I agree with you I

[29:37] you said also before we hit record that

[29:41] children can handle social media like

[29:44] they're just not designed to but adults

[29:46] can't and I think we're feeling this

[29:48] yeah I I think if we may be in for

[29:51] another Moment of Truth

[29:54] I don't know how far away we are from it

[29:56] but with that rise in suicide

[30:00] on social media and the way these kids

[30:02] their minds are too easily influenced

[30:05] and it's it's hurting them I mean

[30:08] they're doing things because they've

[30:10] seen them done

[30:12] you know children are monkey see monkey

[30:14] do and

[30:17] we're hurting them we're hurting them

[30:19] with social media what do you think will

[30:21] be the outcome if we don't begin like

[30:24] where what will be the Rock Bottom what

[30:26] will be the moment that we've turned and

[30:28] we go I'm participating in this like I'm

[30:30] part of this I'm in it like I'm I'm the

[30:33] addict which

[30:35] most people just see addiction through

[30:37] the face of maybe shopping maybe

[30:39] gambling but especially drugs and

[30:41] alcohol they don't see the other person

[30:43] they see what the other person is doing

[30:45] they never ever see their own part ever

[30:49] um it's almost impossible to go out with

[30:52] a group of friends

[30:53] and not see them watching their phone

[30:57] and sometimes engaging with it during

[31:00] the time you're out with them I mean we

[31:02] are all addicted to social media the

[31:05] savior of Our Lives technology has also

[31:08] become the devil you know which is what

[31:11] life does life is

[31:14] duality

[31:15] you know we get the benefits of the

[31:17] computer and Technology but we also get

[31:19] the the difficult Parts The Addictive

[31:22] parts and that's what we need to deal

[31:24] with and when we're in this process of

[31:27] creating a new Earth

[31:29] we need to start setting good boundaries

[31:31] for our kids and maybe even some cases

[31:34] for adults on the computer

[31:37] I mean we deal with criminals in all

[31:39] other areas of our life why wouldn't we

[31:41] deal with them online it's it's a little

[31:45] bit crazy to me that we've created this

[31:48] online world that seems so immune from

[31:51] cause and effect

[31:53] I mean they can't they can't catch the

[31:56] people that are running these scams they

[31:58] can't locate them they can't catch them

[32:00] I mean and there's this whole

[32:03] fiber optic game going on around us all

[32:07] the time and that's all Beyond me I

[32:10] think one of the best things we can do

[32:13] for both ourselves and our children

[32:16] is to connect with the real world as

[32:19] much as we can to connect with me nature

[32:22] to have a pet to

[32:25] go out for coffee with a human with a

[32:28] real human not a friend on Facebook and

[32:32] to just cultivate life

[32:35] little by solely in the real world

[32:38] because that's the world we're trying to

[32:40] save but nobody knows what it is because

[32:43] they're all on their phones too much

[32:46] isn't that the irony when we're in like

[32:49] you were talking about the circumstances

[32:50] when you're in them much like that woman

[32:52] with the five kids who's really just

[32:55] Trucking along

[32:57] I feel like the same thing is happening

[32:59] where we have all these warning signs of

[33:01] anxiety

[33:02] because I had that previously just from

[33:05] being so engaged with social media

[33:07] because my business was on social media

[33:09] generally that I was losing myself

[33:13] within it not even knowing that I was I

[33:15] was drowning until I started to have

[33:18] immense anxiety which I'd never had in

[33:20] my life

[33:21] and realizing that well what was new in

[33:24] my life it was that I had

[33:27] you know now over a million people's

[33:29] this isn't true obviously of everyone

[33:31] but it's like

[33:32] in my experience a million people's

[33:35] expectations that was the codependent

[33:37] part of me of like I'm gonna Place their

[33:39] needs as being I must serve them you

[33:42] know I must take care I must oh and I

[33:44] get to do it through altruistic Ah

[33:46] that's great I get to teach like ah I

[33:48] get to over function and I get to blame

[33:51] the requests and the needs of the

[33:54] audience you know which is interesting

[33:56] how it's easy if we haven't healed I

[33:59] found my codependency went from me and

[34:02] partner or me and parent or me and

[34:04] whatever get it I started to play

[34:06] whack-a-mole with it and it I healed it

[34:09] on the individual yeah and then the

[34:10] [ __ ] would just pop up in another

[34:12] place but I found it really popped up I

[34:15] called it Collective codependency that

[34:17] social media has created this

[34:20] relationship to infinite amounts of

[34:23] people that we've never met and never

[34:25] will and yet we're trying to make them

[34:27] happy

[34:28] good luck right right which is

[34:31] impossible which is I think the medicine

[34:33] which is really interesting like I found

[34:35] the part of me that needed to be loved

[34:38] that desperately wanted to be chosen and

[34:41] all those things

[34:42] felt that resolved inter personally but

[34:45] I hadn't gone through the full mortality

[34:47] you know the full like you're never

[34:49] gonna actually please anyone so just

[34:51] live your [ __ ] life social media I

[34:54] feel like has Amplified that which I

[34:56] think is a good thing on some level but

[34:58] I don't know we have the capacity to

[35:00] hold it in that level you know you were

[35:02] talking earlier about about like you

[35:04] believe there's God in each of us and

[35:07] and that is a very Buddhist concept that

[35:11] we each are a piece of the Divine we

[35:14] each have a Divine Soul a speck of the

[35:16] Divine with us and in the patala which

[35:20] is

[35:21] the building there where the Dalai Lama

[35:23] used to live that contains all their

[35:25] books of infinite wisdom it talked about

[35:28] at the beginning of the world all the

[35:31] books in that Library contained

[35:33] everything that was going to take place

[35:36] in the world till the end of time

[35:39] so computers were known about planes

[35:42] were known about they were written about

[35:43] before they existed they all this wisdom

[35:47] was encapsulated for people and then we

[35:50] were going to be thrown into it and left

[35:52] to sort how we were going to deal with

[35:54] it so

[35:56] good luck to us

[35:59] they didn't write the follow-ups to

[36:01] those books like what was going to

[36:03] happen no but I did get to touch them I

[36:05] got to actually touch them which

[36:09] photographs that is yeah yeah oh I

[36:12] couldn't have read them anyway because I

[36:14] can't read Tibetan if that's the case

[36:16] then there is a Divine wisdom

[36:19] right if you work backwards there is a

[36:21] Divine wisdom

[36:23] that's known about

[36:26] climate control that's known about

[36:30] social media that's known about

[36:33] cigarette smoking that's known about all

[36:35] these other things that we didn't know

[36:38] about yet has allowed them to happen and

[36:42] I have to assume has some sort of plan

[36:44] in mind for us to resolve

[36:48] to come to grips with and the thing I

[36:51] was going to say about anxiety is it's

[36:53] contagious

[36:54] and especially now we're electronically

[36:59] um connected

[37:01] to

[37:02] almost every human being on the planet

[37:04] through our computers through our zooms

[37:06] through our phones through all of it so

[37:10] if

[37:11] when there's that much anxiety going on

[37:14] with everyone which there is we're going

[37:16] to catch it we catch it from people's

[37:19] the things they don't say more than what

[37:21] they say we catch it from people being

[37:24] afraid constantly they're going to get

[37:25] canceled if they say the wrong thing and

[37:28] we all have a bit of that don't we yeah

[37:30] definitely and that relates to your

[37:33] statement about codependency on the

[37:36] whole cultural consciousness

[37:38] you know it's affecting all of us

[37:42] in ways that we can't even fully see you

[37:46] know we're afraid of saying the wrong

[37:48] thing we're afraid of

[37:51] we're afraid

[37:54] and our hearts aren't open our hearts

[37:57] are not necessarily the most open

[37:59] they've ever been right now yeah well in

[38:02] some level it doesn't feel I mean it

[38:04] literally is not safe to be completely

[38:06] open and I've been thinking about this a

[38:08] lot and I want to know what you think

[38:10] about this which is I not thought about

[38:12] it in the framework that you just put

[38:14] like I've thought about it that like how

[38:16] canceled culture causes us to not share

[38:18] our thoughts which gives the illusion of

[38:19] consensus and so you have a dominating

[38:22] thought or narrative culturally and that

[38:25] is allowed to exist because to challenge

[38:27] it but I've not thought about it from

[38:29] that relational pattern that

[38:31] if you have a really angry let's say

[38:33] reactive father or mother who erupts and

[38:37] actually threatens belonging threatens

[38:40] membership to the house the home the

[38:43] family

[38:44] you better get in line and if you don't

[38:47] get in line the biological cost is too

[38:50] high it can be death but you know to a

[38:53] to a human even thinking if I'm not

[38:55] going to be allowed to participate in

[38:57] this social media thing or all my

[38:59] friends are going to criticize me

[39:00] because I said you know biological sex

[39:02] is real or you know I said something the

[39:05] challenge is I've not thought about it

[39:08] from that level that we're basically in

[39:11] relationship with someone and so we end

[39:14] up walking on eggshells and that is

[39:17] enough to produce tons of anxiety yes

[39:21] yeah even the whole process can take

[39:24] place without our knowledge even so

[39:26] we're just walking around feeling

[39:28] trapped right and afraid to talk

[39:32] and then it's showing up symptomatically

[39:34] as anxiety depression

[39:37] whatever autoimmune I'll probably regret

[39:40] saying this after the words come out of

[39:41] my mouth

[39:44] but with all all the crazy

[39:49] um

[39:49] behavior that we've seen portrayed by

[39:52] people

[39:53] throughout colvard

[39:56] the actual people I've encountered in my

[39:58] life on a daily basis have been very

[40:00] kind compassionate decent humans I mean

[40:04] I have not seen all this crazy that I'm

[40:07] told that the world is seeing that

[40:09] doesn't mean it's not there it just

[40:10] means that I'm seeing a different side

[40:13] of the culture

[40:15] um and that's pretty much regardless of

[40:17] where I go people are kind they're not

[40:19] screaming they're not acting crazy and

[40:21] you're in Southern California yeah and

[40:23] we got a lot of craziness here

[40:26] much like healing that codependent

[40:29] Dynamic right like think about the

[40:31] person who's in the relationship with

[40:34] the addict who's never quitting or keeps

[40:36] relapsing

[40:37] can you speak to maybe what is the way

[40:40] out for that person

[40:41] or what it may look like

[40:44] and then also how that correlates

[40:48] to us on a societal level on social

[40:51] media or or speaking out in groups

[40:53] that's a very sensitive question you

[40:55] asked about loving someone

[40:57] that

[40:59] might never get clean and sober

[41:02] um yeah it's one thing if it's a spouse

[41:05] and you can think about divorcing that

[41:08] human it's another if that person is

[41:10] your child

[41:12] and I'm seeing ah

[41:14] so many people right now

[41:16] caught up with being faced with and

[41:19] forced to embrace the fact that their

[41:22] child is experimenting with fentanyl

[41:24] where can you even go with that I mean

[41:27] these people are in horrible situations

[41:30] horrible circumstances right

[41:34] so these are some of the problems we're

[41:36] all tasked with solving while we create

[41:38] the new Earth what is the resolution to

[41:41] or is it so individual to that type of

[41:44] like breaking out of that pattern no

[41:47] matter where we are

[41:49] and this is not always reassuring it's

[41:52] where we're meant to be no matter where

[41:54] our kids are it's where they're meant to

[41:56] be something got them there and there's

[41:58] a way out I am a firm believer

[42:03] in the idea that we each have our own

[42:07] personalized path to well-being and we

[42:10] can tap into it no matter how much money

[42:12] we have or don't have no matter where we

[42:16] are or aren't and no matter who we know

[42:18] or don't know no matter who loves us and

[42:21] is doing what we want and no matter who

[42:23] isn't we can each tap into this path of

[42:26] well-being

[42:27] and it starts with a pure desire in our

[42:30] own heart to look at the truth and to

[42:33] sort what's best for me to do for myself

[42:36] and for the people I love I hate to get

[42:38] into religion but so many people

[42:42] think that we're supposed to just love

[42:45] everybody and and I believe

[42:48] that the Commandment says love others as

[42:50] we love ourselves not love others and

[42:53] completely despise and hate ourselves

[42:55] and I think we've gotten a little turned

[42:58] about on that idea in our world uh and I

[43:02] don't want to get into debating religion

[43:04] religion was sent to help us be better

[43:06] people not hate each other more yeah

[43:08] that's an interesting interpretation of

[43:10] it because I I agree with you there's

[43:12] something lost in

[43:14] like if I post a message about

[43:16] unconditional love you know I always add

[43:18] the coffee yet then it does not mean

[43:21] unconditional tolerance and actually

[43:23] it is loving to place boundaries it's

[43:25] loving to have standards for other

[43:27] people for yourself for what you're

[43:29] committed to creating

[43:31] in you know I had relationship with um

[43:35] addicts and

[43:37] what I knew was that my own healing

[43:39] eventually it led to you know ideally

[43:42] would lead to their healing but did in

[43:44] some cases

[43:45] that just by me standing in what was

[43:47] true for me and what was healthy for me

[43:49] and I chose to stop participating in the

[43:51] pattern that that was the invitation for

[43:54] them which is not treatment it's not

[43:56] it's not a guarantee yeah because in

[43:58] some circumstances it worked and in

[44:00] another it didn't and and that felt not

[44:03] reflective of me but that can be very

[44:06] frightening when it's our child

[44:10] um can be extremely frightening and

[44:13] heartbreaking and more appearance

[44:17] than you realize they're going through

[44:18] that right now and suffering with it and

[44:21] struggling with it

[44:22] um

[44:23] there are people now who pay people to

[44:26] set boundaries with their own kids so

[44:28] there's like a person who's like a

[44:30] boundary broker

[44:32] it's that's a simplified form but it's

[44:36] when these kids are navigating treatment

[44:39] and the parent has lost the ability to

[44:43] set a boundary or never learned one with

[44:45] their child and so the centers have

[44:49] people that actually will set the

[44:51] boundaries the kids need to help them

[44:53] find their way out of addiction when a

[44:55] parent can't I personally think that's a

[44:58] remarkable gift to people who can afford

[45:01] it to help them set a boundaries so

[45:03] their nervous system can calm down right

[45:06] and so they know their kids are as safe

[45:09] as they have the power to make them

[45:11] because the truth is

[45:14] most of us can barely control ourselves

[45:16] we cannot control other people not in

[45:21] any meaningful lasting way ever ever

[45:24] ever

[45:26] we can't control people even if we're

[45:28] right and they're wrong we cannot

[45:30] control them

[45:32] even if they'd be happy if they did what

[45:35] we said we can't make them do it

[45:39] I mean it is I think the ultimate human

[45:42] dilemma it is the ultimate human dilemma

[45:45] I agree

[45:47] because we're faced with

[45:49] wanting the best for someone and wanting

[45:51] them to survive wanting them to be okay

[45:55] and yet sometimes you're getting dragged

[45:58] down you know like going down with the

[46:00] ship getting boiled in that frog water

[46:03] right right and we don't know it till we

[46:05] know it and then we're like holy [ __ ]

[46:07] I'm dying I'm the dying frog I'm the

[46:10] frog in the Boiling Pot yes

[46:13] so I mean maybe if nothing else just

[46:15] hearing this will help people

[46:17] wake up to the fact that they're in a

[46:19] Boiling Pot while they can still

[46:21] possibly jump out

[46:24] that doesn't mean we don't have to leave

[46:26] every relationship we just it's about

[46:29] our perspective it's about our

[46:31] Consciousness it's about our belief

[46:33] system we can start learning more what

[46:36] is the person I love going through do

[46:38] can I learn something about that that

[46:40] would be helpful would it help me would

[46:42] it help him the most important thing and

[46:45] and

[46:46] very hard for many of us to do is to

[46:49] love ourselves

[46:51] unconditionally very hard for many

[46:54] people to do especially women I believe

[46:56] but men to to wrap ourselves up with all

[47:00] the love

[47:01] we would give to a newborn baby or to

[47:05] our favorite pet and give that kind of

[47:08] just acceptance and love and

[47:12] boundaries and scolding and laughter and

[47:15] all the things that people do when they

[47:17] love someone or something it's

[47:20] such a great gift but to do it for

[47:22] ourselves it really does set us free we

[47:25] pour so much of that love into other

[47:27] people and it's not until we realize

[47:29] we're sort of vacant of it or you know

[47:31] boiling

[47:33] boiling in our own self-hatred water I'm

[47:35] not talking about becoming narcissistic

[47:37] when I talk about self-love I think it's

[47:40] what kept me from talking about

[47:41] self-love for a long time my fear that

[47:44] people would think I was talking about

[47:45] narcissism self-love is quieter

[47:48] it's humbler

[47:51] it's very Canadian in some ways yes we

[47:55] can get lost in righteousness though

[47:57] don't be mindful yeah I live pretty

[48:00] close to Canada for a long time

[48:02] um

[48:03] it's gentler yeah it is it has a whisper

[48:06] to it you know it's and even setting

[48:08] boundaries can become simpler and easier

[48:12] and gentler we don't have to tell the

[48:14] person what they did wrong and why we're

[48:15] not going to put up with it another day

[48:17] we don't have to that's just gonna make

[48:19] them want to attack us what we can say

[48:22] is this doesn't work for me

[48:25] this does work for me because we can

[48:28] still blame the other person for

[48:29] everything and we may be right but

[48:31] probably we're not

[48:34] if we're still blaming the other person

[48:36] it's going to come off and how we set

[48:38] boundaries

[48:39] if we're not accepting the other person

[48:41] that's going to come off and how we set

[48:43] boundaries so there is a real art

[48:46] to learning to set boundaries with

[48:48] people and I'm talking about people we

[48:50] are probably going to be interacting

[48:53] with on a fairly regular basis because

[48:55] if it's someone we're never going to see

[48:57] again it's not that important is it but

[49:00] it's for the people in our lives where

[49:02] we've been over giving and or we've not

[49:04] been speaking up for ourselves that's

[49:06] maybe one little thing we can all do is

[49:10] figure out what's causing us stress what

[49:12] we're doing that's not working for us

[49:14] anymore

[49:15] and what we can do that does work for us

[49:18] that's a general way to go in and start

[49:20] setting a boundary that we have to hold

[49:22] it up for the next five years yeah yeah

[49:25] we can't let that boundary collapse

[49:27] because then we end up in the exact same

[49:29] place yeah it comes back to uh what you

[49:32] were saying earlier about

[49:34] um God give me the strength to to let me

[49:36] see the truth or face the truth or hold

[49:38] the truth help me face the truth yeah

[49:41] because in doing that there is something

[49:44] uh incredibly powerful about being able

[49:47] to witness our circumstances from maybe

[49:50] through that prayer someone of an

[49:52] objective lens for a second

[49:54] which then requires some form of action

[49:57] to be able to act upon the truth

[50:00] um or not for a bit but that will take

[50:03] kind of yeah that will organically take

[50:04] on its own life because it really all

[50:07] does take place

[50:09] within here in each of us

[50:13] and if we create the new Earth if we all

[50:16] actually stepped with the plate and

[50:17] created that's where it's going to be

[50:19] created from is our hearts from the

[50:22] heart I don't think we can do it from up

[50:24] here I think we've tried that so we'll

[50:26] we'll give this a go

[50:28] and see where it takes us

[50:30] I wouldn't mind getting back to um

[50:33] lhasa and that book that contains all

[50:36] the knowledge just to put my hand on it

[50:38] to see where we might be going yeah

[50:42] text me through technology

[50:46] I'll just send you a quick text yeah

[50:49] I'll just do Google translate of the

[50:51] take a picture of the Tibetan uh writing

[50:54] oh Google I'll use AI the irony of all

[50:57] of it uh I know AI yeah you know I've

[51:00] been thinking a lot about

[51:02] that which is a whole other uh train but

[51:06] just on how the nervous system we

[51:09] oscillate off each other and the

[51:10] collective nervous system of the earth

[51:12] and you invited at the beginning you

[51:15] know for us to we need nature we need to

[51:17] be with beings you know we need to be

[51:20] with our dog or a cat or whatever it is

[51:23] or cow you know we need to be with them

[51:26] in order to feel the heartbeat of the

[51:28] animal but the Earth and have our hands

[51:31] and soiled again and you know this the

[51:35] rise of technology has been so Swift in

[51:37] terms of an evolution you know it's like

[51:39] the blink of it it's not even the blink

[51:41] of an eye it's a nanosecond I know by

[51:44] its own nature it went quickly because

[51:46] it's technology I think it went faster

[51:49] than any Revolution we've already had

[51:51] but I don't know I haven't been around

[51:53] for that many of them and then by its

[51:55] nature it connects us all to each

[51:58] other's anxiety every time it dings

[52:01] every time Apple contacts us it makes

[52:04] itself constantly known like a very

[52:06] obnoxious child

[52:09] look at me look at me look at me look at

[52:12] me if you if you don't listen to me

[52:14] right now

[52:15] you'll be dead what else is going on

[52:18] what else is going on what else is going

[52:19] on and I think that's really removed us

[52:22] from the richness of the presence of

[52:24] being with people well in the earth is a

[52:27] living being this Earth we live on is

[52:29] not just a cold hard lump of clay it's

[52:33] a living breathing

[52:36] creature

[52:38] and we have not treated her very well

[52:41] throughout through the years she might

[52:43] have an intervention soon yeah she might

[52:46] be already having one I think she'll

[52:48] handle herself

[52:49] she's gonna have no problem she's just

[52:51] gonna cough and we'll all be gone

[52:53] you know or she'll just laugh and watch

[52:56] us

[52:57] you know the the cosmic joke that will

[52:59] just destroy ourselves you know the sort

[53:02] of irony of

[53:03] human I don't know if you know who Wade

[53:05] Davis is but he's an anthropologist and

[53:07] he talks about how

[53:08] um every culture sees other cultures as

[53:11] a failure to be them and that we believe

[53:15] that technology is the ultimate form of

[53:18] human evolution and yet uh

[53:21] we couldn't be further away from the

[53:23] earth and there's nothing human about

[53:25] technology

[53:27] right I mean they don't even call it

Frequently Asked Questions

Beattie describes codependency as the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another person. Her core teaching is that people are powerless to change anyone but themselves, and that caring for the self is where healing begins. The pattern often looks like generosity from the inside, which is part of why it is hard to recognize.
In the episode Beattie uses the image of a frog in slowly heating water to explain it. Each small concession seems reasonable, so the pattern builds gradually until the person feels trapped and cannot say when it began. Awareness is the first step because you cannot step out of a situation you cannot feel changing.
No. Her path began with her own addiction and a judge's sentence to treatment at age 23, followed by eight months in recovery. Her later work with families came after Eden House asked her to figure out how to serve the relatives of addicts, which she describes as something she never dreamed of doing.
Beattie describes it as the healing that happened in group meetings, where people sharing their stories recognized their own lives in one another. Rather than an expert healing from above, the shared experience of pain became the source of recovery. It is part of how the ideas in Codependent No More took shape.
In the conversation she notes that people can begin to eroticize pain, using the emotional charge of conflict as a dopamine hit. She argues that this kind of intensity does not work as a long-term plan for a marriage, a partnership, or a relationship with a child. The thrill can feel like closeness but cannot replace real connection.
The episode treats technology and social media as a modern place where comparison and constant connection can become their own kind of enabling loop. The discussion argues that well-being depends on real relationships with real people. Setting limits on screen time is presented as part of protecting your attention and self-care.
The episode notes point to Codependent No More as the foundation, along with Beyond Codependency, The Codependent No More Workbook, The Language of Letting Go, Playing It by Heart, and The Grief Club. Codependent No More was named one of four essential self-help books of all time by Newsweek in 2009, according to the episode description.
