About This Event

Description

Imagine dedicating three years to a systematic journey through the depths of Buddhist philosophy and contemplative practice—one that transforms not just your understanding, but your relationship to mind, meaning, and liberation itself. The FPMT Basic Program, offered at the serene Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in the heart of Tuscany, is an immersive three-year education designed by the late Lama Zopa Rinpoche, one of Tibetan Buddhism's most influential contemporary teachers. Beginning February 1, 2027, and extending through 2030, this program welcomes serious students ready to move beyond introductory teachings into sustained, rigorous study of the Buddhist path.

This is not casual learning. The Basic Program integrates nine core subjects—from Mind and Cognition through the Grounds and Paths of Secret Mantra—with daily teachings, review sessions, discussion groups, meditation practice, ethical reflection, and community service. Whether you attend residentially at the institute or participate online, you'll join a dedicated cohort of practitioners committed to the same transformative work. The pedagogical approach is distinctly Gelug, balancing intellectual rigor with direct contemplative experience. You'll study how the mind works, explore Buddhist psychology and philosophy, and engage with advanced teachings on emptiness and tantra—all while cultivating the inner stability that practice requires.

Led by Geshe Tenzin Tenphel and Geshe Jampa Gelek—fully ordained monks with decades of monastic training and extensive teaching experience—this program honors the traditional Tibetan Buddhist emphasis on combining scholarly understanding with lived experience. By the time you complete it, you'll have developed a coherent grasp of the Buddhist worldview and the practical tools to sustain a meaningful spiritual life.

What to Expect

Daily teachings form the spine of the program, complemented by guided review sessions where you'll consolidate your learning and ask questions in smaller groups. Meditation periods are woven throughout, giving you time to internalize teachings directly. Discussion groups allow peers to explore difficult concepts together, while community service grounds the philosophy in compassionate action. The atmosphere blends intellectual engagement with contemplative depth—this is scholarly training in service of awakening, not academic study for its own sake.

By program completion, you'll have integrated a comprehensive understanding of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, developed a sustained meditation practice, built friendships with fellow seekers, and cultivated the wisdom and ethical foundation to continue the path independently.

Venue & Logistics

The program takes place at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Pomaia, Tuscany—a tranquil retreat center nestled in the Italian countryside, ideal for deep study and practice. You may participate residentially (staying on-site) or online; both formats follow the same curriculum and teaching schedule. The program begins Monday, February 1, 2027. Bring comfortable clothing suitable for meditation, a notebook, and an open heart. Contact the institute directly regarding accessibility needs and housing arrangements.

Common Questions

FAQs

The FPMT Basic Program is a structured three-year curriculum specifically designed by the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition to build a coherent foundation in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practice, rather than offering drop-in teachings or shorter retreats. It requires consistent commitment to studying core texts on ethics, emptiness, and mind training, making it distinct from introductory weekend programs or single-topic workshops.
While FPMT typically offers programs in multiple languages at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa, you should confirm the specific teaching language and assigned teacher directly with the institute, as these details vary by cohort and are finalized closer to the start date.
The Basic Program is designed as a foundational curriculum, so it does not assume prior knowledge of Buddhist philosophy or practice. However, it does require genuine motivation to engage deeply with abstract philosophical concepts and a commitment to personal study and reflection outside of group sessions.
The Basic Program typically combines monthly or bi-monthly in-person teaching sessions at the institute with ongoing home study of assigned texts and contemplative practice. You should expect to dedicate several hours per week to reading, reflection, and practice between sessions—this is not a passive lecture series.
