Description
What if gratitude wasn't something you had to force, but something you could practice into being—like any other discipline worth mastering? This November weekend at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, MA, invites you into Mary Oliver's radical poetics of attention and praise. Led by Lindsay Whalen, Oliver's official biographer, alongside integrative therapist Shawn Parell, this retreat explores how the simple act of truly seeing becomes an act of devotion, and how gratitude can take root even amid loss and uncertainty.
Whether you've read Oliver's work for decades or are encountering her luminous poetry for the first time, this creative workshop welcomes you. Across the weekend, you'll slow down enough to notice what Oliver called "the soft animal of your body," reading her selected works aloud, moving through accessible yoga practices, and engaging in attentional exercises that transform gratitude from an abstraction into a lived, moment-to-moment experience. Kripalu's contemplative setting—nestled in the Berkshires—becomes the perfect container for this inquiry: What does it mean to praise? How does attention itself become devotion?
This is for seekers drawn to poetry, yoga, and the spiritual practice of conscious awareness; for those who sense that gratitude is not naive positivity, but a disciplined way of seeing the world as it actually is.
What to Expect
The retreat unfolds as an integrated practice across all three days. Mornings begin with gentle yoga classes designed to anchor you in your embodied presence. You'll spend reflective time with Oliver's selected poems, reading them silently and aloud, allowing her language to work on you. Guided writing and attentional exercises—led by both teachers—help you translate Oliver's poetics into your own practice of noticing and thanks. Silent meals create space for contemplation, while optional group sharing circles allow you to witness and be witnessed by fellow travelers. Throughout, the retreat emphasizes that praise and gratitude are not fleeting emotions but practices—disciplines of the heart and attention that deepen over time, even (and especially) when life becomes difficult.
