Description
Imagine moving with the grace of water, the stability of earth, and the spontaneity of wind—all while surrounded by the raw beauty of Big Sur's coastal cliffs. This five-day intensive with Chungliang Al Huang at Esalen Institute invites you to rediscover Tai Ji not as a fixed sequence to master, but as a living practice that evolves with you. Rather than drilling repetitive forms, you'll explore how the ancient art of Tai Ji becomes a mirror for understanding change itself: the personal transformations unfolding in your body, the seasonal cycles reflected in natural movement, and the fluid wisdom of the Tao that asks us simply to work with what is already happening.
Chungliang Al Huang brings over fifty years of continuous teaching at Esalen—a lineage of wisdom earned through decades of practice, travel, and transmission. This workshop is an offering to those ready to move beyond the mechanical and into the meditative, those who sense that true transformation begins not in the mind but in the body's intelligent unfolding. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to Tai Ji, you'll find yourself held in a container designed for genuine embodied awakening.
What to Expect
Over five days, you'll weave together ancient Tai Ji rituals, the Five Moving Forces of Nature, and classical motifs through playful reinvention and improvisation. The practice unfolds as storytelling and energy cultivation—Huang's mastery of qigong and contemplative movement creates space for practitioners of all levels to access Tai Ji as meditation in motion. Each session builds slowly, honoring the Taoist principle of Wu Wei (non-interference with what is naturally unfolding). You'll leave with renewed ways of moving and being, a deeper somatic understanding of change and adaptation, and tools to carry this living practice into your daily life. The dramatic setting of Esalen's natural hot springs and contemplative grounds supports the gradual, gentle unfolding of your practice.
