Why a Four-Hour Thunderstorm Video Has 85 Million Views

Stardust Vibes - Relaxing Sounds
Stardust Vibes - Relaxing Sounds
Apr 12, 2017
6 min read

Picture the usual setup: a phone propped against a water glass on the nightstand, the screen dimmed as low as it will go, the room already dark. On the screen, rain sheets across a window and a lightning flash lights the edges of the clouds for a second before the thunder arrives low and long. Nothing asks for attention. There is no narrator, no title card, no countdown to a chapter. This is "Heavy Thunderstorm Sounds | Relaxing Rain, Thunder & Lightning Ambience for Sleep | HD Nature Video," a recording four hours and four seconds long, uploaded to YouTube on April 12, 2017, and it has been viewed 85,278,075 times. That number is the most interesting thing about it. A video designed to be ignored has become one of the most-played sleep recordings of its kind, and its own description explains the reasoning behind the restraint. What follows draws only on the title, the published description and the upload metadata, since no transcript was available for this piece.

What is actually on screen for four hours?

The title and description describe a heavy thunderstorm with pouring rain, cracking thunder and lightning, presented as an HD nature video. The description calls it "ambient sounds" meant to "wash over you," and suggests it as background for meditation, study, reiki and day spas as well as for sleep. In other words, the video is built as an environment rather than a program. It has no beginning, middle or end in the usual sense. A listener can start it at any point and stop it at any point, and the storm keeps its shape regardless.

That is a specific kind of design choice. A film or a podcast asks you to follow it. A loop like this asks only that you stay in the room. For someone trying to fall asleep, the difference matters: nothing in the recording needs to be tracked, so there is nothing to lose the thread of.

Why would the makers say a storm can help you sleep?

The description makes a direct claim about the material: "Sounds of nature are associated with lower stress and anxiety levels which can help your body to rest, heal, and rejuvenate." The wording is careful. It says "associated with," not "proven to cause." The video's makers present the idea as a reason for the recording, not as a guarantee of a result, and it is worth reading the claim that way.

The logic behind rain-and-thunder sleep audio is easy to state even without the channel's data. Steady, continuous natural sound gives the ear something predictable to settle into. A sudden car door or a dripping tap is an event; a long downpour is a texture. The thunder, when it comes, is a low, slow event that is loud only in the sense of being felt rather than sharp. The creators' own list of uses, from meditation to spa backgrounds, suggests they think of the storm as a kind of room tone that changes slowly enough not to demand attention.

Why leave out the narration?

The description is blunt about this. The channel says it is "a mental health based channel" and that "we cannot add commentary throughout our relaxing music/nature videos as it would detract from the relaxation experience." It also points listeners toward a separate offering: "we do have affirmations & guided meditations available."

That split is the real design philosophy. The storm video is the environment; the guided meditations are the voice. A listener who wants instruction goes to one place, and a listener who wants to be left alone goes to the other. Keeping the two apart means the nature recording never has to do the work of a teacher, and it never interrupts itself to explain what the listener is hearing.

How is a storm like this put together?

The description outlines the workflow in plain terms: the team films with a GoPro Hero7 and an iPhone X, edits, mixes and masters the audio in Pro Tools, and builds the video in Premiere Pro. It does not say which camera or which device captured this particular storm, so we should not assume it. What the workflow does show is that the audio and the picture are handled as two separate crafts, and that the audio is treated with the same seriousness as the image.

For a long ambient loop, the mix is the hard part. Rain has a broad spectrum and thunder has deep low end, and a mix that lets a rumble jump out of the surrounding texture will startle a sleeper even if it sounds dramatic on speakers. Mastering a piece like this is largely about keeping the level consistent over hours, so that the storm reads as weather rather than as a series of effects. The description does not spell out how the team handled those choices here, but the fact that they name Pro Tools and Premiere Pro as the tools for both halves suggests the storm was shaped in the mix rather than simply captured and left alone.

Where does some of the footage come from?

The description also says something that is easy to miss: "In the past, we sometimes collaborated with other video creators (with legal permission), which we would significantly transform into something new and add our own unique music and sounds." So the channel's footage is not always its own, and when it draws on other creators' work, it says it re-makes that material substantially, adding its own music and sound. The description does not say that this particular video used collaborated footage, so the honest reading is simply that the practice exists within the channel's work.

The channel also states that it creates its music with its own instruments, and that the family behind it, with Elita and a second musician described as having played "for many years," make the music themselves. The description is signed by Sean, Elita and Charlotte.

What does 85 million views actually tell us?

The view count, 85,278,075 at the time of the metadata captured, is the most telling fact available. It does not prove that the video helps anyone sleep, and the description's claims are its makers' own. What it does show is that a four-hour storm with no narration has found a very large audience that returns to it. People who want a recording to live under their evening, rather than something to watch, seem to find it useful. For a sound designer, that is the whole brief: make something that does not need you, and let people keep coming back to it.

Where to go from here

  • Play the full four-hour video with the screen dimmed, rather than in short clips, to hear how the storm changes over time.
  • If you want a voice to guide you, the channel's description points to its affirmations and guided meditations, which are a separate offering from the nature videos.
  • Read the channel's own write-up at stardustvibes.com, which the description links for more information on this video.
  • If you use sleep audio regularly, notice whether a continuous recording works better for you than one with narration, and why.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

The video's description says it is designed to create a soothing ambience for relaxation and sleep, and it claims that nature sounds are associated with lower stress and anxiety levels. Those are the makers' own statements, and the description frames them as associations rather than guaranteed results.
The channel says it deliberately avoids adding commentary to its nature videos because it would detract from the relaxation experience. The channel also says it creates its own music and sounds with its own instruments.
The video's metadata lists a duration of four hours and four seconds, and it was uploaded to YouTube on April 12, 2017. Its length is part of its design, since it works as a continuous background environment.
The channel's description says its videos are currently filmed with a GoPro Hero7 and an iPhone X. It edits, mixes and masters audio in Pro Tools and builds the video in Premiere Pro, though it does not say which device captured this specific storm.
The description suggests the video as background for meditation, study, reiki and day spas, in addition to sleep and relaxation. The idea is a steady, non-demanding sound that stays in the background rather than asking for attention.
The description says the channel has sometimes collaborated with other video creators, with legal permission, and then significantly transformed that footage and added its own music and sounds. It does not say whether this particular storm video used such footage.
