Meditation Teacher's Insight Timer Revenue: A $40K Year

Lou Redmond

Lou Redmond begins his 2024 video the way a session musician might open a royalty statement: a dashboard on screen, a single number, and a plain-spoken promise to walk through every line. The number is just under $40,000, the amount he earned from teaching meditation on Insight Timer in 2023. What follows is a rare, granular look at how a long-tenured teacher on a meditation app actually gets paid: which income streams carry the weight, which ones are shrinking, how much a single reply is worth, and why he refuses to hand off the most personal part of the job. Redmond is clear that his purpose in sharing the figures is to show what is possible. Read closely, the breakdown also explains how the economics of a guided-meditation platform reward patience, consistency, and asynchronous work that keeps earning while the teacher sleeps.

What does a $40,000 year on Insight Timer actually look like?

Redmond frames himself as one of the platform's early teachers. He has been publishing on Insight Timer since 2016 and says he spent more than two years there before any money arrived. He describes a catalog of more than 200 tracks that have collectively logged about 2 million plays, seven courses that have enrolled over 65,000 students, and a lowest course rating of 4.81. Those are the details of someone who has been building in one place for a long time.

The dashboard he pulls up at about the two-minute mark shows a lifetime total of $172,700. He is careful to say he has not yet broken that lifetime figure down year by year, but the 2023 number is the one he wants to dissect. That year's total was roughly $2,000 lower than 2022, and the reason he gives is the single most important story in the video.

The lesson in that opening is not the size of the number. It is the framing. Redmond says he shares his revenue because "it's important to see what's possible," and because seeing a peer's concrete numbers lets a teacher think, "if they can do it, then I can too." That is a working musician's logic: look at the actual royalty statements from the people who played the same circuit, not the glossy version.

Why did income dip when Insight Timer added premium tracks?

In 2023, Insight Timer launched a feature called premium tracks, with payouts beginning in May of that year. For a teacher whose income was built on courses, the change had an unexpected effect. Redmond explains that the courses had been funded from a shared premium pool, and that adding premium tracks "massively diluted" that pool. Many teachers, he says, watched their revenue fall, especially those whose premium tracks were not drawing much play.

He does not pretend the change was painless. He admits that as "an old head" with courses that had been out for years, he felt irritated that the work he had put into his courses was being spread thinner. But his conclusion is pragmatic. The platform's intention, as he understands it, was to add value to its premium subscription in hopes of selling more subscriptions. If the company's total pool grows, the per-play figure can shrink while the total sent out to teachers still rises. He compares it to a shift from $20 million to $30 million being handed to teachers: the per-play number looks smaller, but more money is moving.

Whether that math holds for every teacher is an open question, and Redmond does not claim it does. What he does show is the trend line. His income has been climbing slowly since May, and he has taken the lesson that premium-quality content is now where the platform is heading. "We gotta roll with the times," he says, in effect, and treat creating strong premium material as a priority rather than a grievance.

How much do free tracks and comment replies actually pay?

Redmond walks through his line items one by one, starting with the lowest-paying category. Free tracks earned him $1,083 across the year. Premium tracks, which he notes pay out on a similar basis to courses but were newer and took time to ramp, brought in $596.

The more surprising line is engagement. Insight Timer, he says, shares some of its revenue with teachers who reply to comments on their tracks. Based on his experience, a reply to a free track typically earns "maybe 75 cents or a dollar." He then runs the arithmetic out loud: if a reply takes around 30 seconds, the pay works out to roughly $80 to $90 an hour, which he describes as a rough estimate rather than a guarantee. That reframes the comment section from a chore into a paid activity, provided the teacher is present in it.

The catch is consistency. Engagement income swings with how much time he has in a given month. By his account, it can range from about $200 in a strong month to nothing in a month when he simply did not show up to reply. That volatility is a useful reminder: the platform pays for attention, and attention is a habit.

Why do courses carry most of the income?

Courses are where Redmond makes the bulk of his money. He reports averaging just over $2,000 from play counts on his courses alone, and he points to a detail that matters for anyone building a catalog: the courses keep earning without new work. "It's amazing that that's just happening as I sleep," he says, describing asynchronous content as one of the real blessings of making work that people can enter at any hour.

He has three 21-day courses, and he is candid that longer formats are increasingly out of step with the app, where many creators now produce two- and three-day courses. He does not argue the trend away. Instead he makes a case for depth: a well-built 21-day course "takes people through a journey" that a short program cannot. He says people repeat those courses, which is why they keep generating plays long after launch. For a meditation teacher, that repetition is the closest thing to a catalog of residuals.

Courses also carry a second, less visible revenue layer through the course classroom. Redmond says the classroom pays him a percentage of the course-related premium pool for engagement, and that comments there average about $20 each. He prefers answering with audio rather than typed text, finding that speaking "is so much easier" and feels more like a real exchange. The payoff, he notes, is something he used to give away: for years he answered every comment on his tracks for free, because it was fulfilling to see people engage with what he had made.

Should a teacher hand comment replies to an assistant?

This is the most human moment in the video. Redmond says he hired an assistant for a short stretch and had her respond to comments in the way he would. He stopped quickly. It was, in his words, "immediately" out of alignment. "If I'm someone receiving a comment back from who I think is Lou Redmond," he explains, "I wanted to feel like it actually came from Lou Redmond." Learning that the reply was not from him made it feel inauthentic, even though the replies were kind and the people receiving them were glad to hear back.

He knows other teachers outsource this work and understands the reasoning. But for him, the trade is not worth it. He acknowledges that he is giving up a few hundred dollars a year, and he would rather do the work himself in a way that feels aligned. In a creative field, that is the decision a musician makes about whether a session player can stand in for the bandleader on stage. Some things do not transfer without something real getting lost.

What does the long game look like on Insight Timer?

The most useful thread running through Redmond's video is that the income is not a single hit. He is openly skeptical of the idea that you need a viral track. His catalog of more than 200 tracks, which collectively reached 2 million plays, is evidence for the opposite approach. "You just need to continue to show up consistently," he says, and bring solid content to the work.

That consistency is what separates the lines on his statement. Free tracks, premium tracks, comments, and courses each respond to different inputs. Courses earn from people repeating them. Tracks earn from plays that keep arriving. Comments earn from presence. None of these is a jackpot. Together they add up to a living for someone who has stayed put for nearly a decade.

Redmond also says he expects the number to dip in the coming year, a candid forecast that tells viewers he is not presenting a steady upward line. He has also been developing a free course on writing unique guided meditations, a practical follow-up for teachers wondering how to make their scripts stand apart. The lesson is less about a number and more about craft: keep making things that are specifically yours, keep showing up, and let the income follow the work at its own pace.

Where to go from here

If you are a meditation teacher thinking about building income on a platform like Insight Timer, Redmond's breakdown offers a concrete set of questions to ask yourself. Which of your offerings is asynchronous, and which needs your live time? Are your courses built to be repeated, or designed for a single pass? Are you willing to reply to comments yourself, knowing it pays but also knowing that a delegated reply can feel hollow? And are you prepared to track your numbers line by line, the way he does, so that a change in the payout structure shows up as a clear signal rather than a mystery?

To go deeper, watch the full video on Lou Redmond's channel, where he walks through each revenue line himself. His free Meditation Script Mastery course, linked in the video description, covers how to script original guided meditations, and his book Find Your Truth reflects the personal thread that runs through his teaching. Start with the question he returns to most often: what does it look like when you do the work in a way that feels truly yours?

[0:00] hello friend my name is Lou Redmond I'm

[0:02] a meditation teacher soulwork coach and

[0:05] a mentor to upand cominging emerging

[0:08] meditation teachers and coaches and

[0:11] that's why I'm creating this video in

[0:13] this video I'm going to share with you

[0:14] the breakdown of my revenue from inside

[0:17] timer in the last year because I think

[0:21] it's important to see what's possible

[0:25] when we see what's possible our mind is

[0:27] opened up to different potentiality to

[0:30] different possibilities and we can start

[0:33] to sense of oh if they can do it then I

[0:35] can too and a little background on me

[0:39] I've been teaching on inside timer since

[0:41] 2016 so I am one of the ogs I guess you

[0:45] could say I have been so blessed by this

[0:48] platform I was teaching on it for over

[0:51] two years before you can even make any

[0:54] money so I've seen everything I've seen

[0:57] its growth and it's been a wild ride I

[1:00] have no hugely popular tracks I have

[1:04] over 200 tracks that have 2 million

[1:07] plays collectively so I'm someone who

[1:10] believes in consistency that you don't

[1:12] need to have the viral a million playay

[1:14] track you just need to continue to show

[1:17] up consistently and bring great content

[1:19] to the work that you're doing I have

[1:22] seven courses on the app that have

[1:24] enrolled over

[1:26] 65,000 students and my lowest course

[1:29] rating on the app is

[1:31] 4.81 so I've been around I know what I'm

[1:35] talking about and I'm excited to share

[1:38] with you a little bit behind the scenes

[1:41] to give you an idea of what is possible

[1:44] on inside timer and how you might be

[1:47] able to start to bring in more of that

[1:50] Revenue in your own work let's get to it

[1:54] okay so this is my dashboard on insight

[1:57] timer that is I Lou Redmond and let me

[2:00] show you while I'm here the total

[2:04] revenue I've made through insight timer

[2:06] so over the years I've made $172,700

[2:30] been able to kind of ride that wave

[2:33] throughout my journey so that's total I

[2:35] haven't actually done the breakdown of

[2:36] how much money that is per year but you

[2:38] can probably figure that out maybe I

[2:40] will do a another video that breaks down

[2:42] this whole entire number for now I'm

[2:45] going to share with you how much money I

[2:47] made in

[2:50] 2023 and that number is

[2:52] 39,2

[2:55] 7854 now this number is actually 2 ,000

[3:01] lower than I made in

[3:04] 2022 and the reason is in 2023 insight

[3:09] timer launched a new feature called

[3:12] premium tracks which you can see started

[3:14] paying out in May of

[3:17] 2023 as someone who had six courses on

[3:22] insight timer where most of the

[3:25] premium money and revenue that they get

[3:28] goes to paying out course is what

[3:31] happened was when they added premium

[3:33] tracks that massively

[3:37] diluted the course uh payment pool and

[3:40] so I saw my Revenue as many other

[3:43] teachers did saw their revenue go down

[3:46] especially if you didn't have any plays

[3:47] on premium tracks that weren't getting a

[3:50] lot of Revenue so that's taken a little

[3:52] bit to start to amp up for me as you can

[3:54] see that number has slowly been going up

[3:57] since May and the the benefit here

[4:00] hopefully is that although the pay per

[4:04] Play Count has gone down as far as the

[4:08] dilution of so many plays the beauty of

[4:12] inside timer is that they share their

[4:14] own Revenue so their intention with

[4:17] bringing in premium tracks was to add

[4:20] more value to their premium subscription

[4:23] which hopefully would add more

[4:25] subscriptions so it's a difference

[4:28] between if they had let's say $30

[4:30] million to give out to their teachers

[4:33] versus $20 million to give out to their

[4:35] teachers yes that the number might be

[4:39] less on a per play basis but there's

[4:41] actually more money that is now getting

[4:44] sent out to teachers so I'm hopeful that

[4:47] it's going to work itself out and at the

[4:49] same point as an old head that has had

[4:51] courses out there for a long time there

[4:53] was a part of me that is a little

[4:55] annoyed at the premium tracks just

[4:57] because I put so much into my cour es

[5:01] and I'm seeing that get diluted but we

[5:04] got to roll with the times and that's

[5:06] where inside timer is at and so focusing

[5:08] on creating great premium content is

[5:11] important now let's just go through here

[5:13] line item by line item if you haven't

[5:15] already been looking at it we have free

[5:17] tracks which get the least amount of

[5:21] Revenue per play and or engagement and

[5:24] that is

[5:26] $1,083 over the year as I said the

[5:29] premium tracks They get paid as much as

[5:31] courses they were just newer so it took

[5:34] a little while to start amping up I got

[5:36] $596 in the year from that now the

[5:40] incredible thing about insight timer is

[5:43] that they offer some of their revenue

[5:46] sharing if you are engaging and

[5:50] commenting on your tracks which is

[5:55] incredible and the way that it often

[5:56] works out for a free track is about

[6:00] every reply to a track is about maybe 75

[6:05] cents or a dollar so let's do the math

[6:08] if you spend 30 seconds that's might be

[6:10] a long time to spend on every response

[6:13] you're making about

[6:15] $150 excuse me a150 a minute add that

[6:19] time 60 that's about what $80 90 an hour

[6:22] so if you're sitting there just engaging

[6:23] with people which is super fun you're

[6:25] actually making money for it which is

[6:28] incredible now as someone who's been on

[6:30] the app for a while I have a lot of

[6:32] other things going on as well where I

[6:34] don't often find the time I know I

[6:37] should find more time to go down and

[6:39] engage with people so you can see

[6:41] depending on how much time I have that

[6:43] month or devote to it it could go from

[6:45] $200 in one month to$ Z in one month

[6:49] where I just didn't do it at all that

[6:51] month now I have thought about having

[6:55] assistants I actually had an assistant

[6:57] for a little bit or I have an assistant

[6:59] and I had her

[7:00] responding to comments in a way that I

[7:02] would respond to comments and I stopped

[7:06] doing that because immediately it just

[7:09] felt out of alignment for me it felt

[7:12] inauthentic if I'm someone receiving a

[7:15] comment back from who I think is Lou

[7:18] Redmond I wanted to feel like it

[7:21] actually came from Lou Redmond so while

[7:24] I've thought about Outsourcing it and I

[7:25] tried it for a very little bit my heart

[7:28] said it's not for me now I know other

[7:30] teachers who will Outsource this to an

[7:33] assistant to engage and there's a good

[7:36] reasoning for that I understand but for

[7:38] me you got to we got to do this work in

[7:40] a way that feels aligned for us and for

[7:41] me you know what I'm going to lose the

[7:44] few hundred um and not feel like it's

[7:47] not authentic me responding even though

[7:50] it would feel good for the people to get

[7:52] that message from them but it's also

[7:53] feeling it and realizing it's not

[7:55] actually from me

[7:58] so let's move on

[8:01] um play counts on courses now courses is

[8:04] where I make the bulk of my Revenue

[8:06] obviously as you see here so I've made

[8:10] you know average almost

[8:12] $2,000 plus just on the play counts of

[8:16] my courses so it's important to create

[8:19] good courses create courses that people

[8:22] want to continue I have three 21-day

[8:25] courses which I know are a thing of the

[8:27] past because a lot of people are now

[8:29] creating two and 3-day courses and I get

[8:31] that's where we're are on the app but as

[8:33] an old head I'm going to lean you to if

[8:35] you create a really great 21-day course

[8:37] people are going to repeat that and and

[8:40] they go through this journey you're able

[8:41] to take people through a journey that

[8:43] they just can't go through in three or

[8:45] five days and so I've been able to you

[8:48] know have courses that continue to get a

[8:50] lot of plays and people do them over

[8:52] again and it's amazing that that's just

[8:55] happening as I sleep and that's the

[8:58] beauty of making content online that is

[9:01] asynchronous that people can engage with

[9:04] and is just such a blessing to receive

[9:07] now again huge blessing from inside

[9:10] timer is that they pay you a percentage

[9:13] of their big Revenue share which goes to

[9:15] the premium content for the engagement

[9:18] on your courses and what I love about

[9:21] insight timer is that you can engage

[9:23] with audio I love speaking audio to me

[9:26] it's so much easier to respond and just

[9:29] share with someone rather than typing

[9:31] things up in a way that feels authentic

[9:33] so I love using their course classroom

[9:36] that comment averages it's about $20 a

[9:39] comment which is

[9:41] incredible to respond to someone

[9:44] something that I would do often for free

[9:46] that I did do for years I was responding

[9:49] to all my tracks for years for free

[9:52] because it was so fulfilling to know

[9:53] that wow I'm putting stuff out there and

[9:55] people are actually engaging with it

[9:57] just as you might engage on YouTube

[10:00] comments you don't get paid for that but

[10:01] it's a way to connect with our audience

[10:03] so inside timer is incentivizing that

[10:07] because their main focus or one of their

[10:09] main focuses and the thing that I think

[10:12] sets them apart from other platforms is

[10:14] community they have such a solid

[10:17] community and they are paying for that

[10:20] they are offering the teachers the

[10:22] incentive to make sure that they're

[10:23] responding to comments so how to do this

[10:27] is when you're making a course optim

[10:29] optimize to ask for comments one just

[10:33] make engaging content because people are

[10:35] going to remark on it people remark when

[10:37] things are remarkable so if you make

[10:38] remarkable content people are going to

[10:40] want to remark and ask questions and

[10:42] just reflect often those spaces can just

[10:44] be a journaling process for people and

[10:47] so optimizing your courses in a way

[10:49] that's asking for comments in a way

[10:52] that's creating the days that allows for

[10:55] deeper reflection and being in the

[10:58] course classroom making note that you

[11:00] will be in the course classroom for

[11:02] people to engage in real time and so

[11:05] there could be a whole video on how to

[11:06] optimize your courses in that way which

[11:08] maybe I will do if you like this sort of

[11:10] content please let me know in the

[11:12] comments and I will continue to to share

[11:16] if it resonates so that's my engagement

[11:18] you can see plays and engagement on

[11:20] courses are the big bulk of my Revenue

[11:23] almost 35 over 34

[11:26] $35,000 and then web and app donations

[11:30] which come from lives or just people

[11:31] sending donations based on receiving my

[11:34] content is a nice chunk it's a nice

[11:36] $1,700 from inside timer now this last

[11:40] year we weren't losing 30% to Apple

[11:44] which I think now is back on so that

[11:46] number may go down in this upcoming year

[11:49] but I'm not staking my revenue on inside

[11:53] timer based on donations that I really

[11:56] would encourage you to focus on creating

[11:58] Great Courses making it something that

[12:01] people would engage on and that's how

[12:03] you're going to start growing on insight

[12:05] timer and then of course having the

[12:08] premium tracks and so that is a total of

[12:11] 39,2

[12:13] 7854 which comes out to about

[12:17] $3,273 a month on the app that I'm

[12:20] receiving mostly passively again there

[12:24] is this work that you're putting into it

[12:25] and showing up but it really is a nice

[12:28] supplement and was a dream I used to do

[12:31] financial goals um for my entirety of my

[12:34] business but I remember I would make a

[12:36] financial goals for maybe 2019 or 2020

[12:39] and I had like a three-year goal and my

[12:41] three-year goal was to be making $3,000

[12:44] a month from inside timer so it blows my

[12:46] mind because that seemed like so out of

[12:48] bounds to be making this much money a

[12:52] month uh from this app so I am so so

[12:55] grateful for inside timer and what it

[12:59] allows

[13:00] to do so I'm so grateful for inside

[13:01] timer and what it allows me to do so

[13:05] that's it that is the revenue I've made

[13:08] last year thank you so much for

[13:11] listening I hope you found that helpful

[13:13] inspiring or at least

[13:15] interesting one thing I want to note

[13:18] when I think of My Success and I'm also

[13:21] friends with other people teachers on

[13:23] the app that have had similar success to

[13:25] me and the common trait that I see is

[13:29] coming coming to this app with a great

[13:32] deal of generosity and gratitude what an

[13:37] opportunity we have to put our soul work

[13:42] into the world in a place that people

[13:45] resonate with in a place that people are

[13:48] looking for what we have to share and so

[13:50] really having that attitude of gratitude

[13:53] to be kind of corny with it when you're

[13:56] showing up to the app and to notice

[14:00] and I've done this myself when you're

[14:02] going to the app to try to get something

[14:05] from it to try and use the app for our

[14:08] own gain rather than saying okay what is

[14:11] it that wants to move through me what is

[14:13] the deepest most authentic of expression

[14:15] of my soul how can I create content and

[14:18] share that on the app so that it makes

[14:21] the impact that we are here to make you

[14:25] probably are sharing your content on

[14:28] inside timer because you feel like your

[14:30] life is in service to something greater

[14:33] than yourself that you are living your

[14:35] purpose in this world and that is really

[14:38] what it's all about and that process of

[14:40] sharing our hearts seeing it be received

[14:44] is fulfilling in itself and so the

[14:47] people that have had the most success

[14:49] they focus on that first and then often

[14:53] the money is an effect of sharing our

[14:57] gifts with the world so know that I am

[15:01] rooting for you as you bring your heart

[15:04] and your gifts to the world thank you so

[15:07] much for listening if you like this

[15:09] video please like And subscribe to the

[15:11] channel and leave a comment and let me

[15:12] know this is actually new type of

[15:15] content for me for this YouTube channel

[15:16] so it's helpful to hear that response

[15:18] and feedback from you and if you're a

[15:20] meditation teacher or coach and you're

[15:22] wanting to add some new meditations and

[15:26] some unique meditations to the things

[15:29] that you're creating if you're wanting

[15:30] to add more to your offerings to create

[15:33] more content for insight timer or other

[15:35] meditation apps I have a free course

[15:38] called meditation script Mastery and its

[15:41] intention is to help you learn how to

[15:45] create powerful and evocative

[15:47] meditations that allow you to build your

[15:50] personal unique voice in a way that

[15:53] people are going to resonate with you

[15:55] that might be different than every other

[15:57] meditation teacher and I think that's

[16:00] what's led to my success on inside timer

[16:02] is knowing how to create meditations

[16:04] that are really unique and so this

[16:07] course will help you come up with your

[16:08] own ideas and creativity so that you can

[16:11] bring your heart and your soul to your

[16:14] meditations in a really fun and unique

[16:16] way so go ahead and check that out in

[16:18] the description it's absolutely free my

[16:21] gift to you meditation script Mastery

[16:23] and I can't wait to to share that with

[16:24] you all right we'll see you next time

[16:27] talk soon

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Lou Redmond says he earned just under $40,000 from Insight Timer in 2023, roughly $2,000 less than in 2022. His lifetime total on the platform, shown on his dashboard in the video, is $172,700.
Redmond explains that Insight Timer launched premium tracks in 2023, with payouts starting in May, and that these diluted the shared pool that had funded course payouts. Teachers with courses saw revenue fall, especially if their premium tracks were not drawing many plays. He argues the total money sent to teachers can still rise even as the per-play figure shrinks.
Redmond says a reply to a free track typically earns around 75 cents to a dollar, and he estimates that, at roughly 30 seconds per reply, the work comes to about $80 to $90 an hour. He also notes that earnings depend on how much time you devote in a given month, ranging from around $200 in a strong month to nothing in a month with no engagement.
Redmond acknowledges that many creators now make two- and three-day courses, but he argues that a well-built 21-day course takes people through a journey that shorter programs cannot. He says his three 21-day courses keep earning because people repeat them, with play counts continuing long after launch.
Redmond tried having an assistant respond to comments but stopped because it felt inauthentic. He wanted replies to feel like they came directly from him, and he says he is willing to give up a few hundred dollars a year to keep that personal connection.
Redmond's approach emphasizes consistency over a single viral hit. He has over 200 tracks that collectively reached about 2 million plays, and he says the key is to keep showing up and bringing quality content. He also recommends building courses that people will repeat and engaging with your community in ways that feel authentic.
Asynchronous content is material people can access on their own schedule, without a live session. Redmond describes it as a major blessing because his courses keep generating plays and income while he is not working on them, including while he sleeps.
