Letters From Love: The Self-Letter Practice Behind Eat Pray Love

Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert

Watch · 7

On September 3, 2004, a 34-year-old writer sat on a plane bound for Rome and felt the force of takeoff pressing her back into her seat, a sensation she still remembers two decades later as vertigo and fear. Below her, in the life she was leaving, sat a house, a marriage, and a job she described as one of the best in journalism, writing for GQ about men. Elizabeth Gilbert, speaking in a September 2023 YouTube video to mark the twentieth anniversary of that flight, said she could no longer do it. What followed became Eat Pray Love, and what she announced in the same video is a newsletter built on a spiritual habit that predates the book by years: writing yourself a letter from love. That habit, she said, is the thread running from the Rome bathroom floor of the memoir to a Substack community she is now starting.

What did Elizabeth Gilbert leave behind when she got on that plane?

The departure in the video is not romanticized. Gilbert describes a life that looked right from the outside and was making her physically unwell. "That path that I had been on that had stopped working for me and in fact was making me so sick I thought I was going to die," she says, and then she lists what she walked away from: "a house a marriage a really good job." She admits she had a good job, which is the point. The pressure she describes was not a crisis of circumstance. It was, in her words, "something that was arising within me that was demanding expression."

That detail matters for anyone who has read the book as a travel story. The journey was not a vacation from a bad situation. It was a response to a internal pressure that a life built on the wrong foundations could no longer contain. Gilbert holds the memory of that takeoff with a kind of tenderness, noting that she has flown many times since and never felt that particular force again.

Why did a customs officer at JFK recognize her book?

One of the most telling moments in the video is a story she calls one of her favorite anecdotes about the book. Returning from two months of travel through Costa Rica, Colombia, and Panama, she was questioned at customs. When she said she was a writer of a book called Eat Pray Love, the officer's reaction changed the room. Gilbert recounts that the officer called her colleagues over and told them this was "the real Eat Pray Love person." Her explanation was that women arriving at JFK after time abroad often answered the question about their trip with some version of "I was having my own Eat Pray Love journey."

"Every single day women come through here coming from traveling abroad and I ask them what the purpose of their visit was and they say I was having my own Eat Pray Love journey."

— Elizabeth Gilbert, September 2023 YouTube video (about 2:21)

The anecdote does more than flatter. It shows how a book about one woman's search became a shorthand for a whole category of inner reckoning, the kind that people undertake in the middle of ordinary lives. Gilbert treats that long reach as something to be grateful for and something to keep serving, rather than a finished legacy.

What is the letter from love, and where did it come from?

The practice began in one of the darkest scenes of the memoir. Gilbert points listeners to page 53 of the first edition, a moment in Rome when she was, in her description, having an emotional breakdown, full of depression, shame, and anxiety. She medicated herself through it, and she also did something less conventional: she wrote a letter from love. Alone in a city where she knew no one, in the middle of the night, she opened a notebook and wrote a line that anyone who has been there will recognize: "I need your help."

What came back is the heart of the method. Gilbert says a response arrived in her own handwriting: "I'm right here what can I do for you." The reply that followed is the letter she reads aloud in the video, and it is worth quoting in full in spirit. It says that love will stay up with her all night if she needs to cry, that it will support her if she needs the medication and will love her just as much if she does not, and that "there's nothing you can ever do to lose my love." It promises to protect her through death and beyond, and it declares, "I am stronger than depression and I am braver than loneliness."

"That strange interior gesture of friendship brought me Solace when nothing else could."

— Elizabeth Gilbert, September 2023 YouTube video (about 5:38)

The phrase "strange interior gesture of friendship" is precise. The practice is not a diary entry, and it is not affirmation in the usual sense. It is an act of addressing yourself as someone who is genuinely on your side, and then letting that voice answer with the specific tenderness you would want from a friend who could never be disappointed in you.

How does a self-letter practice work day to day?

Gilbert is clear that this is not a one-time rescue. She says she has been doing the practice for 25 years and that it is something she does nearly every day. She has also taught it for a long time. Students of her creativity workshops know that the final assignment is to write yourself a letter from love, and she says she has read "thousands" of these letters over the years. The practice is therefore both a private discipline and a teaching tool that has traveled widely.

The mechanics are simple enough to try tonight, and Gilbert's own account suggests a few principles. Begin with a true, unpolished request, the way she did with "I need your help." Let the reply come in your own hand, even if it feels strange at first. Make the reply unconditional: it does not wait for you to be less anxious, less ashamed, or more productive. And keep it concrete, offering presence and specific care rather than vague cheerleading. The gap between the first line and the answer is where the practice does its work, because it asks you to imagine the voice of someone who is not frightened of you.

  • Write the question you are actually afraid to ask, without editing it into something tidier.
  • Let the answer come from a place of care, not from the critic who wrote the question.
  • Stay with the unconditional part, which is the hardest and the most important.
  • Return to it regularly, because, as Gilbert says of her own life, the work does not end on a final page.

Why is Gilbert moving this practice to Substack?

The newsletter emerged from a wider reckoning with social media. Gilbert says many readers have told her they missed her presence there, the way she used to connect in the early days of the platforms. She is also candid about what changed. She describes how a seemingly fun medium turned out to be, in her phrasing, "addictive" and "engineered to be addictive," and she says it has been bad for the self-esteem of girls and women. She is trying, she says, to find a space where that early sense of community can exist more safely. Substack, which she notes is used by writers including Patti Smith, George Saunders, and Samantha Irby, is her answer for now.

The project she is building there is called Letters From Love, with the slogan "opening the imagination, healing the heart." She reads its mission statement aloud, and it is a manifesto that frames the practice as both a learning space and a spiritual discipline. Its central claim is that "self-loathing is a rampant virus in our contemporary culture," so prevalent it has become "the default setting in most of our minds." The aim is to help people discover their "inherent value and exquisite preciousness" and to learn to speak to themselves from love.

"Self-loathing is a rampant virus in our contemporary culture so prevalent as to have become the default setting in most of our minds."

— Elizabeth Gilbert, reading the Letters From Love mission statement, September 2023 YouTube video (about 9:03)

What will subscribers actually get?

According to the video, subscribers will receive a weekly dispatch from Gilbert, but the content will be shaped around a shared project in which people write and speak to themselves from love. She mentions a subscription price of five dollars in the video, and invites people who want to join the community to sign up through the Substack link she provided. The intent is less a broadcast than a collective exercise, where her own long-practiced method becomes the curriculum and her readers become the participants.

What makes the announcement interesting beyond the anniversary is the continuity it reveals. The woman who wrote in a Roman notebook in 2004 is the same woman who still writes to herself today, and who now wants to build a room for others to do the same. Gilbert says plainly that her life "didn't end on the last page," and that "Earth School is still happening." The newsletter is her way of saying the lesson is not finished, and that she is willing to keep doing the homework in public, with a community.

Where to go from here

If you read Eat Pray Love years ago, the most useful thing to return to is page 53, the notebook and the question "I need your help." If you have never tried the practice, start small: write one honest sentence to yourself, let the answer arrive in your own hand, and keep the reply unconditional. Gilbert's video makes clear that the practice is meant to be repeated across a lifetime, not performed once. For those who want the community she is building, her Substack, Letters From Love, is the place she points to, with a sign-up link provided in the video's description. Watch the full announcement for her own voice on the anniversary, the customs story, and the letter itself, which lands harder when you hear her read it.

[0:01] hi everybody it's Liz I have a lot to

[0:05] share with you today so settle in get

[0:08] yourself a beverage wrap yourself up in

[0:11] something cozy take your shoes off take

[0:13] your bra off we have a lot to go over

[0:16] here and I'm really excited about all of

[0:19] it so

[0:20] first of all the anniversary a very very

[0:24] important milestone in my life

[0:26] 20 years ago today

[0:28] on September 3rd 2004 which now feels

[0:33] like a million lifetimes ago I got on an

[0:36] airplane and I flew to Rome to begin

[0:39] what would eventually become my Eat Pray

[0:42] Love Journey which it was not called at

[0:44] that time because I didn't have a title

[0:46] for it or even any understanding of what

[0:48] I was doing in fact what I remember

[0:51] about this day

[0:53] 20 years ago was a feeling of incredible

[0:57] vertigo and fear as I sat on that plane

[1:01] and I mean I've been on a lot of planes

[1:03] before and since but I don't ever

[1:05] remember such a strong sense of the

[1:08] force of the plane taking off just this

[1:10] like

[1:11] oh

[1:13] because I was flying away from an entire

[1:15] life that

[1:17] path that I had been on that

[1:20] had stopped working for me and in fact

[1:22] was making me so sick I thought I was

[1:24] going to die

[1:25] and I was leaving it all behind a house

[1:28] a marriage a really good job I had a

[1:31] really good job I had one of the best

[1:33] jobs in journalism working at GQ

[1:36] Magazine writing articles about men

[1:39] I just couldn't do it anymore and there

[1:43] was something that was arising within me

[1:45] that was demanding expression

[1:47] and that thing eventually became

[1:50] this thing this is one of the first this

[1:53] is the first edition copy of Eat Pray

[1:55] Love Like it doesn't even say like

[1:57] best-selling author because I wasn't

[1:59] when this book came out like who could

[2:02] have imagined what this book would be

[2:04] become would become

[2:06] in my life in so many people's lives one

[2:09] of my favorite anecdotes about it was

[2:10] that I was just uh last year coming home

[2:13] from a trip to Costa Rica and I was

[2:15] coming through customs and the Customs

[2:18] officer asked me what I was doing in

[2:19] Costa Rica and Colombia and Panama for

[2:21] two months and I said I was traveling

[2:23] around and that's probably seemed

[2:24] suspicious so she said what's your

[2:26] profession and I said I'm a writer and

[2:28] she said what did you write what do you

[2:29] write and I said well I wrote this book

[2:31] called The pray love and she said you

[2:32] already Pray Love

[2:34] and then she called all the other

[2:36] Customs officer she's like this is the

[2:37] print listen you pray love person and

[2:39] they all started laughing because she

[2:41] said every single day this is at JFK

[2:44] airport she said every single day women

[2:47] come through here

[2:49] coming from traveling abroad and I ask

[2:51] them what the purpose of their visit was

[2:52] and they say I was having my own need

[2:54] Pray Love Journey ever

[2:57] come on

[2:58] I mean that's amazing 20 years later so

[3:02] happy birthday the beginning of Eat Pray

[3:04] Love thank you for everything you

[3:06] brought into my life everything that you

[3:08] brought into so many people's lives I

[3:10] can't believe how much it's still part

[3:12] of our vernacular

[3:14] um I'm so glad I did it I'm so glad I

[3:18] so glad I left everything behind and

[3:21] went and did that and I've had to do it

[3:23] again multiple times in my life because

[3:25] my life story didn't end on the last

[3:27] page if you pray love

[3:29] um or on the last frame of the movie

[3:31] where I was literally looking like Julia

[3:34] Roberts sailing into the sunset with

[3:35] Javier Bardem life is still in session

[3:38] Earth School is still happening and huge

[3:41] Transformations and changes continue to

[3:44] come to me over the years and I have to

[3:46] show up for this journey again and again

[3:48] and this brings me to something that I

[3:52] wanted to share with you all and and an

[3:54] invitation that I want to make in honor

[3:57] of this anniversary so I've changed a

[4:00] lot since I was 34 20 years ago going on

[4:03] that trip but there are some levels at

[4:06] which I haven't changed at all there are

[4:09] levels of pain and fear and anxiety and

[4:12] Desperation that I still experience

[4:14] and ways that I need to show up as love

[4:18] for myself in order to get through those

[4:21] difficult times that doesn't seem to

[4:24] stop it doesn't seem to stop that I need

[4:26] that and some of you may remember

[4:30] if you pick up your first edition of you

[4:32] pray love and turn to page 53

[4:35] you may remember this scene where I was

[4:38] in Rome and I was having an emotional

[4:41] breakdown and I was full of depression

[4:44] and shame and anxiety and I medicated

[4:47] myself through it by writing myself a

[4:50] letter from love do you guys remember

[4:51] this

[4:53] um

[4:53] and I mentioned that this was a practice

[4:55] that I've been doing and it's true I've

[4:57] I've actually been doing this practice

[4:59] for

[5:02] 25 years now

[5:05] um and it's something that I do nearly

[5:07] every day of my life now but in the book

[5:10] I talk about how I was panicking and

[5:12] spiraling and and I needed love and I

[5:16] needed care and I didn't know anybody in

[5:18] Italy and I was alone and it was the

[5:21] middle of the night and I was frightened

[5:23] and so I opened a notebook and I wrote

[5:25] these words I need your help

[5:28] and then a little while later a response

[5:31] comes in my own handwriting I'm right

[5:33] here what can I do for you

[5:35] and then this is the letter that love

[5:37] wrote To Me

[5:38] I'm here I love you I don't care if you

[5:42] need to stay up crying all night long I

[5:44] will stay with you

[5:45] if you need the medication again go

[5:47] ahead and take it I will love you

[5:49] through that as well

[5:50] if you don't need the medication I will

[5:52] love you too

[5:53] there's nothing you can ever do to lose

[5:55] my love

[5:57] I will protect you until you die and

[5:59] after your death I will still protect

[6:01] you

[6:01] I am stronger than depression and I am

[6:04] braver than loneliness and nothing will

[6:07] ever exhaust me

[6:09] and I wrote that that strange interior

[6:11] gesture of friendship

[6:14] brought me Solace when nothing else

[6:16] could

[6:17] this is a spiritual practice that I've

[6:19] never given up and I've taught it a lot

[6:21] over the years some of you have taken my

[6:23] creativity workshops will remember that

[6:26] the final assignment I always give you

[6:27] in the creativity Workshop is to write

[6:30] yourself a letter from love I've heard

[6:32] thousands of letters from love from all

[6:35] of you over the years

[6:36] and that brings me to this new adventure

[6:40] that I'm going on that I want to invite

[6:42] you into I'm starting a sub stack

[6:46] newsletter which I also hope will turn

[6:49] into a new community where I can meet

[6:53] with all of you and you can meet with me

[6:55] kind of in the way I used to do on

[6:57] social media back before social media

[6:59] crew venomous things

[7:02] and we all found out that it's maybe

[7:05] this thing that seemed really fun

[7:07] actually is like addictive and is

[7:10] engineered to be addictive and is really

[7:13] bad for the self-esteem of girls and

[7:15] women and also might be destroying

[7:16] democracy

[7:19] um anyway remember how I used to be on

[7:21] social media a lot of you have said you

[7:23] missed me on social media

[7:24] I've been trying to recalibrate my

[7:27] relationship and understanding with it

[7:29] and trying to figure out where I can

[7:31] recreate those sort of early days

[7:33] community that that we used to have

[7:35] um in a safer space and sub stack is

[7:39] um this newsletter service that a lot of

[7:41] writers are using right now in order to

[7:43] do exactly that in order to create

[7:45] private communities Patty Smith has a

[7:47] sub stack newsletter George Saunders has

[7:50] one Samantha Irby my friends like a juad

[7:54] like so many beautiful people are doing

[7:56] wonderful things so it's an email it's a

[7:58] subscriber email newsletter and the way

[8:00] that it would work is that you sign up

[8:02] for it and I will send you every week A

[8:06] dispatch and but it's going to be a very

[8:08] particular dispatch because there's a

[8:10] project that I want to do with all of us

[8:12] on that substack newsletter

[8:15] um and I'm just going to read to you the

[8:17] mission statement that I wrote about it

[8:19] because I think it would be easier to

[8:20] read it than to try to explain it okay

[8:22] so when I said settle in I really meant

[8:24] it

[8:27] um

[8:29] so my my sub stack newsletter is going

[8:31] to be called Letters From Love

[8:34] and the slogan of it is opening the

[8:36] imagination healing the heart

[8:38] and here's what it says Letters From

[8:41] Love is both a learning space and a

[8:43] spiritual practice here people come

[8:44] together to discover their inherent

[8:46] value and exquisite preciousness and to

[8:49] learn how to write and speak to

[8:50] themselves from a place of love

[8:53] self-loathing is a rampant virus in our

[8:55] contemporary culture so prevalent as to

[8:58] have become the default setting in most

[9:00] of our minds seldom do we even stop to

[9:03] question whether it is normal or healthy

[9:05] to live within a Consciousness that is

[9:07] constantly attacking judging and

[9:09] insulting itself

[9:10] but to condemn yourself as unlovable is

[9:13] to swallow a terrible lie and to believe

[9:16] that you must earn love through

[9:17] perfectionism or that you must seek love

[9:20] from other people in order to become

[9:22] whole turns all of us into hungry

[9:24] beggars

[9:26] I believe there is an ocean of warm

[9:29] affectionate and outrageously

[9:30] unconditional love available to us all

[9:33] and that it is conveniently accessible

[9:36] from within I don't believe anyone is

[9:38] excluded from this ocean of love it is

[9:40] only a question of learning how to hear

[9:41] it how to feel it how to trust it

[9:44] for over a quarter of a century now I

[9:46] have written daily letters to myself

[9:48] from Love and it has become the most

[9:50] transformative spiritual practice of my

[9:52] life

[9:53] I have come to believe that there is a

[9:55] magnificent intelligence in the universe

[9:57] that is kind beyond measure and that

[10:00] only seeks to know us and be known by us

[10:03] Einstein wrote the most important

[10:05] decision we can make is whether we

[10:06] believe we live in a friendly or a

[10:08] hostile Universe how you decide to

[10:11] answer that question will impact every

[10:13] moment of your existence hint

[10:15] Einstein believed he lived in a friendly

[10:16] universe

[10:17] so do I

[10:19] in this space I will teach you how to

[10:21] write yourself letters from

[10:22] unconditional love how to open your

[10:24] imagination to that Universal

[10:26] friendliness and how to download its

[10:28] messages I will share with you the

[10:30] letters that I have written and I will

[10:32] invite you to share what you have

[10:33] written

[10:34] sometimes I will ask my friends and

[10:36] interesting strangers I meet in my

[10:38] travels to be special guests on the

[10:39] newsletter to write and share Love

[10:41] Letters to themselves you don't need to

[10:44] be a writer or a creative I hate that

[10:46] word it's so exclusionary you don't need

[10:49] to be a writer or a creative in order to

[10:51] join this practice this is hard work and

[10:53] it's for everyone I've taught this

[10:55] practice to people all over the world

[10:57] from middle school children to Fortune

[10:58] 500 Executives and everyone can do it

[11:01] even the executives this is not fancy

[11:03] writing this is just a simple and

[11:05] beautiful download directly from a

[11:07] loving Cosmos to your heart

[11:09] and if you ever have trouble writing

[11:11] your own love letters you can always use

[11:13] mine

[11:14] because love is for everyone and

[11:16] everyone deserves to be loved

[11:18] so that is what letters from Love is

[11:20] going to be and the way the newsletter

[11:22] works is you subscribe to it and I've

[11:24] got two levels of subscription because I

[11:26] want to keep it as simple and accessible

[11:29] as it can be so the first level is free

[11:31] you can just sign up for for free so if

[11:33] you don't have any money you can totally

[11:35] do this and every week I will send you

[11:37] the newsletter and the newsletter will

[11:39] include a video of me talking to you and

[11:41] reading you a letter from love that I

[11:42] wrote and encouraging you and

[11:44] instructing you on how to do that for

[11:45] yourself so everyone can have that and

[11:49] then if you want to join as a paid

[11:51] subscriber it's five dollars and what

[11:53] you get with the five dollar five

[11:54] dollars a month or fifty dollars a year

[11:56] and what you get with the paid

[11:57] subscription is that you can engage you

[12:00] can write comments you can write back to

[12:03] other people you can share your own

[12:04] Letters From Love I will be able to read

[12:06] your letters from love I will be able to

[12:08] comment on it and I'll also have a whole

[12:11] bunch of other stuff behind that five

[12:12] dollar fee paywall of like

[12:16] um people who I think are interesting

[12:17] I'm going to ask them to write letters

[12:19] from love videos of me doing karaoke I

[12:21] want to share my poetry with you

[12:23] recommendations encouragement things

[12:25] that I used to do on social media back

[12:28] in the day and then also like my art

[12:29] like this morning because this is the

[12:32] journals these are the journals I use

[12:33] that I write to myself in and um this

[12:36] morning's piece of art it's a little

[12:38] lotus flower that says my overdeveloped

[12:41] sense of responsibility keeps nobody

[12:43] safe

[12:45] [Laughter]

[12:46] [Applause]

[12:48] um so that's what we're gonna do and I'm

[12:49] hoping that it will become

[12:52] like a community of love and a community

[12:55] of care and a community where we all

[12:58] learn that all the love that we're

[13:00] seeking outside of ourselves is a bill

[13:02] is available within ourselves so

[13:05] um I hope you'll join it feels like a

[13:09] really beautiful way for me to honor

[13:11] the 20th anniversary of getting on that

[13:15] plane and doing this thing that was

[13:17] itself an act of love right choosing my

[13:19] own life over

[13:21] the life that had been prescribed for me

[13:23] a life that looked really good on paper

[13:25] I call it a Christmas card life I had a

[13:27] Christmas card life the husband had the

[13:30] house I had a good job and I was dying

[13:33] in there I was dying of lovelessness

[13:37] and I don't die from lovelessness

[13:39] anymore I won't because I've found a way

[13:42] to tap into it wherever I am and

[13:43] whatever I'm going through whether it's

[13:46] loss or grief or a pandemic or

[13:48] disappointment or creative projects but

[13:52] I thought I was going to be doing the

[13:53] terms that I'm not doing

[13:55] Whatever It Is Love Is there for me and

[13:57] for you so if you would like to join us

[14:00] in this you can subscribe the links

[14:04] depending on where you're watching this

[14:05] will be either in my bio my LinkedIn or

[14:08] my linked trees that's called link tree

[14:10] bio

[14:12] um or it'll be in this caption or you

[14:14] can go to sub stack and look for me and

[14:17] um

[14:17] yeah let's do this journey together this

[14:19] is the next level man I remember reading

[14:22] that um the meditation teacher and

[14:25] writer Sharon Salzburg met the Dalai

[14:27] Lama when he first came to the United

[14:28] States and nobody knew who he was like

[14:30] met him in some living room in

[14:31] California and one of the Americans in

[14:35] the room asked him what the remedy was

[14:38] for self-hatred

[14:40] and the Dalai Lama needed to talk to his

[14:43] interpreter for like a half an hour

[14:45] before he even understood the question

[14:48] because he was so perplexed by what that

[14:50] could mean he kept asking like wait who

[14:52] is the person that you hate who is the

[14:54] enemy who is the person that you hate

[14:56] and then and they were like us we hate

[14:58] ourselves and everyone in the room all

[15:00] the North Americans in the room were

[15:01] like we we hate ourselves you know we

[15:03] struggle with that and he was like

[15:06] doesn't even make sense

[15:07] like what is happening in this culture

[15:10] this is a real problem it is a

[15:13] residual internalized it is completely

[15:15] natural and it isn't

[15:17] it isn't natural it isn't normal and it

[15:20] isn't healthy and this is the next

[15:22] Journey that I want to go on which is to

[15:24] teach everybody who wants to be included

[15:26] in

[15:27] how to talk to yourself and write to

[15:28] yourself from the love that you are the

[15:31] love that you are I can't wait to read

[15:33] your letters I can't wait to share with

[15:35] mine and

[15:37] um let's see how this works I'm excited

[15:39] and I love you all more than I can say

[15:42] and happy birthday Eat Pray Love

[15:44] happy birthday I love you guys bye

Frequently Asked Questions

Gilbert describes writing yourself a letter from love: you begin with an honest request, such as 'I need your help,' and then write a reply in your own handwriting from a place of unconditional care. She says she has done this practice for 25 years and nearly every day. She first describes it in the Rome section of Eat Pray Love, on page 53 of the first edition.
Letters From Love is a Substack newsletter Gilbert announced in a September 2023 video to mark the 20th anniversary of Eat Pray Love. She describes it as both a learning space and a spiritual practice, where people learn to speak to themselves from love. Its slogan is 'opening the imagination, healing the heart.'
In her 2023 video she says she left a house, a marriage, and a demanding job writing for GQ because the life had stopped working and was making her physically sick. She describes a strong inner pressure that was 'demanding expression.' She was 34 at the time and flew to Rome on September 3, 2004.
Start by writing a true, unpolished question you are afraid to ask yourself, without tidying it up. Then let the answer come from a voice of care rather than the critic. Gilbert emphasizes that the reply should be unconditional, offering presence and specific support rather than vague encouragement.
Gilbert says social media felt addictive and engineered that way, and she believes it has been bad for the self-esteem of girls and women. She wants to recreate the early sense of community she had online in a more private, safer space, and says many followers told her they missed her there.
In the video, Gilbert mentions a five-dollar subscription price. Readers can sign up through the Substack link in the video's description. Check the Substack page for current pricing, since the terms may have changed since the 2023 announcement.
