Kripalu Yoga at Home: Breath and Compassion Practice

Julie Ela Grace

A cat's collar bell jingles somewhere off-camera, a neighbor's dog barks through the wall, and a yoga teacher settles cross-legged on her mat to say she has decided not to play any music for this one. It is March 2020, and COVID-19 has just pulled yoga classes off studio floors and into living rooms. Julie Ela Grace, who teaches a style she calls Kripalu yoga, has opened the first of her "Yoga at Home" sessions with a plain, unhurried invitation: sit tall, breathe, and practice with compassion. What follows, across a little more than seventy minutes, is centering breath, shoulder rolls, seated spinal lifts, slow work for the belly and back, and a steady refrain that the practice belongs to whoever is doing it, not to an image of how a body should look. It is a compact lesson in how a teacher who came to yoga through illness understands breath, gratitude and compassion as the substance of practice, and it holds up well for anyone who never presses play.

How did yoga become part of a teacher's life during cancer treatment?

Grace tells the story of her beginning early in the session, and it shapes everything else she teaches. At 19 she had thyroid cancer. She started practicing yoga on a DVD during her treatments, kept going after the summer ended, and found that it became a real part of her life, especially through her twenties.

"I started my yoga practice in a place where I needed healing and yoga brought me so much more than help and physically healing my body it brought me to a place of mental healing emotional healing as well." (Julie Ela Grace, first online session, March 2020, approx. 2:00–3:05)

That distinction between physical healing and the mental and emotional kind matters. Much of modern yoga marketing treats the practice as a body-shaping tool. Grace's account begins somewhere else: with a body that was being treated, and a practice that offered something beyond the physical outcome of the moment. Her teaching keeps returning to that starting point.

What does "union" mean when yoga is about yoking?

Grace points to the word's root, which she gives as "to yoke," and draws a clear meaning from it: "Yoga is about union." In her framing, the practice is about joining the mind, the body and the spirit rather than treating the body as a separate project. The word is doing real work in her teaching. When she asks students to notice their breath, or to draw their attention inward, she is asking them to bring those parts of themselves into the same room.

This is also why she is wary of splitting practice into a physical task and a mental one. In her view, mind-body work is continuous. The breath is the place where that continuity is easiest to notice, which is why so much of this session is spent there before any movement begins.

Why does compassion matter more than getting the pose right?

The most repeated idea in the session is that students should not impose "shoulds" on themselves. Grace names the trap directly: the habit of telling yourself how things should be, how you should be, how you should look, or how someone else should be. Her counter is simple and demanding. If you allow the body to be whatever it is that day, she says, that acceptance can produce real results. She adds, "that can be hard, but that's why it's a practice."

She also builds in permission for limits. Because she cannot see her students through the screen, she repeatedly asks them to listen to their bodies, to take breaks when needed, to honor any injury or illness, and to do only what they can. Her wording is a little looser than a formal rule, but the intent is clear: what you can do is the point, and it is worth being grateful for.

How does practice actually change the nervous system?

Grace's best explanation comes from ordinary human development. A baby does not simply climb out of a crib one day and walk. It spends months learning to move, building neural connections as it does so. Yoga, she argues, works the same way. "We are creating mind-body connections," she says, and the same logic applies to mental practice: "when you start to practice gratitude you get better at gratitude."

This is a useful way to think about any repeated practice. Nothing in the session promises instant transformation. What she describes is accumulation, a skill that deepens because it is revisited. Her closing invitation makes the same point, asking students to practice gratitude for what they can do, and to keep doing so "now and always."

What happens in a session like this one, step by step?

The structure is deliberately basic. She begins with centering and breathing, moves into warm-ups, then core work for the abdomen and back, and sees where the class goes. Her cues are specific enough to follow, even on a small screen:

  • Seated posture (around 1:00–2:00): Sit however is comfortable, cross-legged or on a cushion, block or bolster. Ground down through the sit bones and lift through the spine. Hands can rest down for grounding or up for receiving, and she asks students to notice which feels right.
  • Shoulder rolls: Inhale to roll the shoulders up, exhale to wind them down and back, then relax them and repeat.
  • Breath cycle: A deep inhale through the nose, then a sigh or blow out of the mouth, repeated several times to release stress and tension.
  • Natural breath and attention (around 12:50): Let the natural breath take over, notice where it lands in the body, whether high in the chest or lower in the belly.
  • Spinal waves and hip circles: Inhale to lift, exhale to round, then move through larger circles of the legs and hips, which she describes as engaging the hips and the obliques together.

Her grounding line during the breath work is among the most quotable in the session. She tells students that "now is now," that "the past is the past, the future is the future," and that they are here in this moment. That is not a slogan so much as an instruction: bring the attention back to the breath when the mind wanders into worry, and begin again.

Where do the pandemic and the "silver linings" fit in?

Grace does not treat the pandemic as an interruption to her teaching. She frames it as a chance for slowing down and for meeting people. Early in the class she argues that there are always silver linings, and offers an example from history: she says that without the two World Wars, the world would not have had antibiotics, or as much of the triage surgery now in use. Her point is less a historical claim than an attitude toward difficulty. The moment can be used.

She also frames the moment as connection. Students are meeting "virtually," she says, but "we're all connected not just technologically but we're all connected." She promises to share playlists and asks viewers to share their own knowledge and skills in return. The message is that a home practice can still be a shared one.

What should a beginner take away from this session?

Grace is careful about safety, and her framing is worth keeping. Props such as bolsters, blocks and straps are optional, and she offers options without them. For sensitive backs, she gives alternatives and asks students to relax when needed. Her video description also makes clear that the guidance is not a replacement for medical advice: check with a doctor or health care professional before beginning any yoga practice, and seek medical advice if you feel unwell or are unsure about any part of the practice.

The most useful takeaway may be her simplest one. Let the practice be what it is. Breathe, notice, adjust, and return.

Where to go from here

If you want the full experience, watch the complete session, paying attention to the breath work early on and the back-sensitivity options near the end (around 1:00:37). Her closing, around 1:08, is a short meditation that ends with a wish for well-being, which makes a good place to pause. From there, Grace has pointed viewers to her website, www.sanctuarygrace.com, for class details, and to her free meditations on Insight Timer. Start small: a few minutes of centering breath, a single shoulder roll, one honest pause to notice where your breath lands. Then return tomorrow and do it again. That repetition, she suggests, is how the practice builds itself.

[0:02] hi everyone I just want to welcome you

[0:06] to this first session of yoga at home

[0:11] with Julie that's me

[0:16] I've decided not to play any music in

[0:19] the background for this first session

[0:21] because I'm still getting to grips with

[0:23] the audio but feel free to put your own

[0:26] music on for the session if you're one

[0:29] of my regular clients you'll know that

[0:31] music is a big part of our sessions I'll

[0:36] try to put up some playlists on both

[0:38] YouTube and my website as well during

[0:43] this whole covin 19 pandemic I think we

[0:49] all need to support each other as much

[0:51] as much as we can

[0:53] sharing our knowledge or playlists our

[0:58] skills so I just hope that you enjoy

[1:02] this first online session and again if

[1:09] you're a regular client some of these

[1:11] things that I'm going to say at the

[1:12] beginning you'll already know but just

[1:16] for anyone new and just of course as a

[1:21] reminder to everyone I always want to

[1:25] invite you to practice with compassion

[1:30] so I teach a style of yoga known as

[1:35] Kripalu

[1:36] yoga and the bad joke that everyone

[1:40] knows is that the unfortunate thing when

[1:43] you see Crippler spelled it's K RI ta Lu

[1:49] and then most people pronounce it

[1:52] crippled you I am NOT here to

[1:56] you Crippler yoga is all about mindful

[2:00] compassionate practice I started doing

[2:05] yoga on a DVD when I was 19 years old I

[2:09] had thyroid cancer and I

[2:13] started doing yoga during my treatments

[2:17] and ended the summer after my treatments

[2:20] and then it really became a part of my

[2:22] life especially in my twenties sorry one

[2:27] thing about these yoga home videos that

[2:30] you will find is you're going to share

[2:32] little footsteps

[2:35] so that's Luna yoga at home with dogs

[2:44] and cats okay but it's a free video so

[2:49] hopefully you can cope anyway I was

[2:55] saying I I started my yoga practice in a

[2:59] place where I needed healing and yoga

[3:02] brought me so much more than than help

[3:05] and physically healing my body it

[3:07] brought me to a place of mental healing

[3:12] emotional healing as well it's a

[3:16] profound practice because Yoga is about

[3:18] union it comes from this word to yoke so

[3:23] we're uniting the mind the body the

[3:26] spirit and again I just I want to invite

[3:31] you to do this all compassionately it's

[3:35] very easy to put shoulds upon ourselves

[3:39] to talk about the way that things should

[3:42] be the way that we should be the way

[3:45] that we should look the way someone else

[3:47] should be Anna actually if we just allow

[3:54] it can have amazing results just to

[3:58] allow ourselves to be allow the body to

[4:00] be whatever it is and that can be hard

[4:03] but that's why it's a practice so when

[4:09] you were a baby you didn't just hop out

[4:12] of your crib one day and start walking

[4:15] you spent a lot of time learning about

[4:18] how to move your body and creating those

[4:21] neural connections and it's the same in

[4:24] a yoga practice

[4:26] we are creating mind-body connections

[4:29] and it's the same in a mental practice

[4:31] when you start to practice gratitude you

[4:35] get better at gratitude and so my

[4:39] invitation to you now and always is to

[4:42] practice in gratitude for what you can

[4:44] do so with that being said obviously

[4:50] this is a practice that you do knowing

[4:55] your own body I'm on the other end of a

[4:57] screen I can't even see you right now

[5:00] so do what's right for you take a break

[5:04] if you ever need to take a break

[5:06] listen to your body if you're injured or

[5:08] if you have any illnesses and just do

[5:13] what you can because what you can do is

[5:16] a blessing we we often forget about the

[5:20] body until something goes wrong right so

[5:25] you know we forget how amazing our legs

[5:28] are our feet our hands and then suddenly

[5:31] we break an ankle or we break that leg

[5:34] or whatever or we get sick and then it's

[5:37] like oh I really liked walking I really

[5:41] liked being able to breathe but how

[5:43] feeling like my my nose had you know my

[5:48] sinuses have ten pounds of weight in

[5:49] them whatever it is so again it's an

[5:53] invitation for gratitude by the way if

[5:57] you hear the sound of the bells that's

[5:59] the cat's I added bells to their colors

[6:04] a few years ago they're from if you're

[6:09] in Britain you can get bells from the

[6:11] Royal bird Society and it stops the cats

[6:14] from from killing the birds outside

[6:16] which is always a good thing if you're

[6:19] feeding your cats on your wing life tips

[6:25] video anyway

[6:30] this first session today it's just going

[6:33] to be a mix of things hopefully you're

[6:36] not too fed up with me talking yet

[6:39] and we're going to start the way we

[6:41] would in a normal session if you're

[6:42] again if you're one of my clients

[6:44] already and you'll know this format if

[6:47] you're new welcome I mean this is the

[6:51] beautiful thing about covet 19 you know

[6:56] there's always positives there's always

[6:58] silver linings and you know if we didn't

[7:01] have World War one and two we wouldn't

[7:04] have antibiotics we wouldn't have so

[7:06] much of the triage surgery that we have

[7:09] so there are always silver linings and

[7:13] so one of the great things that this

[7:16] pandemic is bringing us is not only this

[7:18] opportunity to slow down but this

[7:21] opportunity may be for us to meet other

[7:23] people that we don't even know even

[7:25] though we're meeting them virtually

[7:26] we're all connected not just

[7:29] technologically but we're all connected

[7:35] so we're going to start with the

[7:37] centering and breathing exercise and

[7:39] then we'll move into a few warm-ups

[7:42] people do a little core work for the

[7:45] abdomen and the back and we'll just see

[7:49] where we go just a basic session to

[7:51] start it doesn't mean it's all gonna be

[7:52] easy but again it's a practice it just

[7:56] builds on itself over time it's going to

[8:00] be interesting to be doing this not only

[8:02] with the animals that's nyla not only

[8:05] with the animals running around but also

[8:08] without without you my beloved Yogi's

[8:12] and yoginis I I missed you I already

[8:17] miss you and you're not there to either

[8:22] laugh or not laugh at my bad jokes which

[8:25] might mean that they're gonna get even

[8:26] worse sighs but to everyone out there

[8:32] I'm sending you so much love so much

[8:37] healing and welcome you to this session

[8:43] so I'm going to move back onto my mat

[8:48] okay so

[8:52] the first thing I'd like you to do is I

[8:55] would like you to try to sit up nice and

[8:58] tall you can use a yoga mat if you have

[9:03] one yoga mats if you don't have a yoga

[9:06] mat you can still do yoga

[9:08] they were pretty modern invention Yoga

[9:10] is an ancient tradition so do feel free

[9:13] to to sit wherever you can flips

[9:17] likewise if you of yoga props bolsters

[9:20] blocks straps and you want to use them

[9:22] you can for some of the sections I will

[9:25] use props but I will make that know in

[9:28] advance of the session and I'll also try

[9:31] to still offer the options without the

[9:33] props cats asking to be let out the

[9:39] other thing you might end up hearing

[9:40] unfortunately is the dogs and the

[9:42] neighbor's dogs barking in the

[9:43] background part of a yoga practice is

[9:47] acceptance and allowing what is so I

[9:52] know spans across the animal kingdom so

[9:57] coming to a comfortable seated position

[9:59] sit with your legs crossed if you're

[10:01] able but if that's not comfortable for

[10:05] you sit however you're comfortable

[10:06] sitting and again you can sit up on the

[10:09] prop on a block on bolster on a pillow

[10:12] if you don't have either of those you

[10:14] could even grab a cushion from your sofa

[10:17] so do do what's right for you and then

[10:21] find that comfortable seated position

[10:23] and try to ground down through your sits

[10:26] bones and then lift through your spine

[10:29] so you're just creating this nice tall

[10:32] spine and then you can relax your hands

[10:35] they stay down for grounding energy up

[10:39] for receiving energy so what do you need

[10:42] right now and then from here let's take

[10:48] a few rolls of the shoulders so inhale

[10:51] roll the shoulders up in the next out

[10:55] wind them down them back and again and

[11:03] one more again just relax the shoulders

[11:12] down let the hands come down wherever

[11:15] they're comfortable again up or down and

[11:19] grounder this it's bone elongate the

[11:22] spine close the eyes and take a deep

[11:27] inhale through the nose and then exhale

[11:31] sigh or blow the air out of the mouth

[11:42] and do this a few times

[11:46] inhaling calm exhaling sighing out

[11:55] letting go of any stress or any tension

[12:18] and all it is right now is now fit the

[12:27] past is the past

[12:29] the future is the future you are here

[12:33] now so take another breath

[12:37] [Music]

[12:50] and then from here let your natural

[12:57] breath take over and just notice your

[13:03] breath

[13:06] notice how the breath lands and body

[13:15] notice where it lands in the body and

[13:23] there are lambs in the chest or further

[13:25] down into the belly and then up here

[13:47] draw the awareness enjoy the awareness

[13:54] to your mind and notice the quality of

[13:59] the line how open or closed it is how

[14:04] busy or quiet and whatever you find in

[14:11] this practice and your body and your

[14:14] mind and your motions see if you can

[14:18] just allow them to be whatever they are

[14:22] rather than push them away or judge them

[14:26] just notice whatever it is maybe your

[14:29] mind is really busy or worried just

[14:32] acknowledge it

[14:40] and check in with your emotional body

[14:44] heart center how are you feeling right

[14:49] now again try to avoid pushing anything

[15:02] away just allow it to be whatever it is

[15:18] and check in with your body notice

[15:25] what's happening in the body right now

[15:28] where are you open and relaxed where are

[15:35] you feeling tension or strain

[15:37] [Music]

[15:51] you can just acknowledge what it

[16:11] I'm here take the awareness and bring it

[16:17] back to your brown start to deepen the

[16:22] breath through the nose and draw the

[16:25] breath all the way down into the belly

[16:27] so that the belly Rises with the inhale

[16:33] exhale out the nose and feel the belly

[16:36] roll back toward the spine and I'm going

[16:42] to run through some of the basics of

[16:44] pranayama or yogic breathing for these

[16:47] first couple sessions so some of you

[16:49] might already be very aware of this

[16:52] never hurts to have a reminder so take

[16:57] your hands place them on your belly and

[17:00] then inhale through the nose and take

[17:03] the bracket down into the belly so that

[17:06] the belly rises into the hands and then

[17:10] exhale out the nose and you feel the

[17:14] belly you roll back toward the spine

[17:18] inhale belly Rises exhale belly Falls

[17:30] just start to activate the diaphragm now

[17:36] if you find that as you in how you you

[17:41] suck in this is a condition known as

[17:44] reverse breathing its more common in

[17:48] stage performers and in women it's a

[17:52] subconsciously learned behavior so if

[17:55] you find that you suck in as you inhale

[17:58] this isn't actually the natural way of

[18:00] breathing it doesn't allow you to

[18:01] breathe us fully so just start this

[18:04] practice inhale expand and exhale

[18:09] contract and again it's a practice it

[18:13] might not come right away but all the

[18:15] time it does I was a reverse breather so

[18:20] again it will it will your habits will

[18:23] as you practice to take a few more deep

[18:28] diaphragmatic breaths then take your

[18:46] hands place them on your ribs inhale

[18:49] through the nose take the breath down

[18:52] into the belly and then into the ribs

[18:55] feeling the inhale expand the ribs out

[18:58] into the hands exhale out the nose feel

[19:07] the ribs just start to contract back in

[19:17] and from here place one hand on your

[19:21] chest the other hand can be a belly or

[19:23] up on the ribs and then from here inhale

[19:28] through the nose fill up belly ribs

[19:32] chest expanding all the way up through

[19:36] the inhale exhale nose chest ribs and

[19:46] belly contract

[20:08] this three-part brat is known as a dear

[20:12] go breath it's a foundational breath and

[20:16] pranayama or yogic breathing so if

[20:19] you're newer to this stay with this

[20:22] breath today if you are more familiar

[20:27] with yogic breathing and you'd like to

[20:29] come into an je or an ocean wave

[20:31] sounding breath please do so if you

[20:35] don't know what that is I will I will

[20:38] teach this in the next video okay so if

[20:42] you're new to this day with the dear go

[20:44] breath again this is a basic breath

[20:46] inhale through the nose fill up belly

[20:49] ribs chest exhale out the nose chest

[20:55] ribs belly

[20:59] so we're breathing both diaphragmatic ly

[21:02] and thoracic ly you can either leave

[21:07] your hands on the body or just let them

[21:09] fall back to your lap let's take another

[21:15] three to five breaths here focusing on

[21:22] inhale and exhale

[22:05] at any point your mind wanders now or in

[22:09] the practice to sickness the thoughts

[22:12] without judgment and come back to your

[22:16] breath and your body from here start to

[22:36] mentally ready yourself from you've men

[22:44] then take a woman just to draw something

[22:47] back into your body let yourself stretch

[22:51] roll around yawn sigh just do whatever

[22:57] you need and then from here staying in a

[23:11] seated position we're just going to

[23:13] start to merge breath and movement so

[23:16] we're going to take it into howl and

[23:17] look through the arms and then exhale

[23:22] release the arms all the way down and

[23:26] again inhale lift and exhale down again

[23:37] inhale lift and exhale down and then

[23:45] realizing that you can actually see my

[23:48] arms so I'm going to just shift the

[23:53] computer back as far as I can against

[23:55] the chair shift back a little - no

[23:59] you're still not going to see them fully

[24:00] it's ok so we're going to inhale lift

[24:03] the arms

[24:05] and then exhale I want you to take your

[24:08] I don't know if I need to use my left I

[24:20] don't know in the holistic arms I'm just

[24:26] going to tell you what I'm doing and

[24:27] then exhale take your left hand down and

[24:29] reach your right arm across now from

[24:32] here you can either come down onto the

[24:34] floor or you can come down onto the hand

[24:36] depending on what feels right for your

[24:39] body whatever you'd avoid is twisting

[24:42] down to the side okay

[24:43] so we're taking that top arm up sending

[24:47] it across and then inhale lift all the

[24:52] way up and exhale over to the other side

[24:55] so it's like sea grass that's just

[24:57] blowing in the winds we inhale up

[25:00] through Center exhale take this nice

[25:02] long lateral stretch and again we lift

[25:08] and over to the other side what we're

[25:10] doing here is we're opening the

[25:12] intercostal muscles between the ribs and

[25:14] this will allow us to breathe more

[25:16] deeply take one more to each side and

[25:30] then inhale lift all the way back up

[25:32] through Center and then from here I want

[25:36] you to interlace your fingers I'm gonna

[25:38] bring my hands down so you can see them

[25:39] interlace your fingers take them behind

[25:42] your head

[25:42] sit up nice and tall and then from here

[25:45] tuck the chin in towards your chest draw

[25:47] your elbows down toward the sides of

[25:49] your head now if it feels like that

[25:52] hands are too low just bring them higher

[25:54] likewise if they feel too high bring

[25:56] them lower it should feel comfortable to

[25:58] you and our way to keep the rest of your

[26:01] spine straight but just tuck the chin

[26:03] into the chest take a nice inhale here

[26:06] and then exhale take a subtle turn to

[26:11] the right

[26:12] turning to peek under the right armpit

[26:18] inhale through Center and exhale left

[26:22] turning to peek under the left armpit

[26:27] once more to each side inhale Center

[26:30] exhale right inhale Center and exhale

[26:39] left and inhale Center start to lift the

[26:46] handle lift the arms and then ready to

[26:48] exhale and bow down toward the earth in

[26:51] front of you and then roll your hands

[26:53] back in toward your heart and he'll lift

[26:55] up toward the sky and exhale bow and

[26:59] again roll the hands back up into the

[27:16] sky and then from here I want you to you

[27:19] can't see this I mean interlace your

[27:21] fingers lift them up as high as you can

[27:24] inhale and then I want you to exhale and

[27:29] just start to twist with your bot with

[27:31] your spine with your torso toward the

[27:33] right inhale back through Center and I

[27:39] tell toward the left inhale Center

[27:47] exhale right inhale Center and exhale

[27:55] left inhale Center

[28:00] and the next hour you just just start to

[28:03] release your hands down to your knees

[28:05] and then taking them house send the

[28:07] heart forward rolling the shoulders back

[28:10] and then exhale tuck the chin in towards

[28:12] your chest and around that and again

[28:15] inhale take the heart forward shoulders

[28:18] back exhale round one more

[28:30] from Hawaii to inhale take it forward

[28:33] and then spin out to one side like

[28:36] you're using your body to scoop out a

[28:38] jar spin out to the other side and just

[28:41] keep rolling around and then over to the

[28:51] other side and I'm occasionally smiling

[28:55] because I see a very sleepy fat cat

[28:58] behind and likewise a very warm happy

[29:02] dog I hope they're such calm enjoy in

[29:06] your house too okay and then roll all

[29:13] the way back up through Center we have

[29:17] just warmed up the spine so anytime

[29:21] we're talking about warming up the spine

[29:24] we want to think of three sets of

[29:26] movements so we have the forward and

[29:29] back so there again the hard floor of

[29:32] that arch and then that round back and

[29:34] then we have the side-to-side the

[29:37] lateral and then we have the twist okay

[29:41] so any time you want to warm up this

[29:43] spine think of those three sets of

[29:45] movements and it doesn't have to be the

[29:47] ones we've done you can do those in so

[29:49] many ways which we will do over the

[29:51] coming weeks but anytime you want to

[29:54] warm up your spine three sets of

[29:56] movements okay

[29:58] all right from here let's all right I'm

[30:06] gonna say hi to David I'm sure you're

[30:08] out there um and Allison David and

[30:11] Allison my love's core work because I

[30:15] know that if I asked at the start of the

[30:17] class you would ask for core work so

[30:19] let's do it

[30:20] so from here what I'd like you to do is

[30:23] I'd like you to just start to come down

[30:25] onto your back and I'm really hoping

[30:28] that you will still be able to hear and

[30:32] so all right from here I want you to

[30:37] come down onto your back

[30:39] and then start with both legs extended

[30:43] flexing your feet now if your many

[30:48] sensitivities in the spine I'm going to

[30:50] address how you can you can work this a

[30:52] little bit and then from here I want you

[30:54] to then take both arms out to a tee

[30:57] I'm gonna be slightly askew here with

[31:00] the wall this is the first video I'll

[31:02] sort it out more in the future so from

[31:05] here

[31:06] flexing the feet arms out at a tee

[31:09] ground here your heels pointing up

[31:11] through the toes and then taking inhale

[31:14] I want you to lift your right leg

[31:15] halfway up to the sky sort of 45 degrees

[31:17] so not all the way to the ceiling yep

[31:19] just halfway up now this is going to

[31:22] work your hip flexor it is going to work

[31:24] your core if this feels like too much or

[31:27] if this feels like it's going into your

[31:28] lower back I want you to bend up your

[31:30] left knee make the adjustments that you

[31:32] need to make so then it's comfortable

[31:35] and then from here inhale lift that

[31:38] right leg up to 90 or as close as you

[31:41] can I swear I can hear the groans now

[31:54] wait for it you're gonna grow more I

[31:56] want you to take that leg back down to a

[32:00] low hover well then I want you to turn

[32:03] the toes out

[32:04] keep the left side grounded especially

[32:07] if that left leg is extended and I want

[32:09] them to swing that right leg out to the

[32:11] right as far as you can pull up through

[32:14] your core taking it back to 19 so we

[32:16] take it down out and back up and we're

[32:21] just going to do a few of these so say

[32:23] hi to your hips so many people are now

[32:28] working from home and just to say that

[32:30] is a blessing for anyone who can keep

[32:33] working because there are people can

[32:34] keep working right now however if you're

[32:37] working from home I'm really guess

[32:38] you're at your computer a lot so your

[32:41] hips your shoulders your neck they're

[32:43] really going to be feeling it although

[32:45] you probably do the same in an office

[32:47] but it depends it

[32:48] depends on your work so let's just say

[32:51] hi to these hips okay one more take all

[33:00] the way up toward 90 take it in pal

[33:03] and then exhale bend the right knee into

[33:06] the chest interlace your fingers over

[33:08] the shin flex that foot so that you're

[33:11] protecting your knee anytime we have the

[33:13] leg been flexing the foot is always

[33:15] wanting to help the knee so if you have

[33:17] any knee sensitivities just remember

[33:19] foot flexed so flat okay and then if

[33:22] that left knee is bent just extend it

[33:24] out here and take a woman just to side

[33:28] out and then unwind your fingers lift

[33:45] that right leg back up toward the sky

[33:47] take your arms back out to a tee and

[33:50] then from here take that left leg bring

[33:55] it halfway down back to 45 or sorry

[33:58] right leg bring it back to 45 degrees

[34:01] and then I want you to engage with your

[34:04] lower abdomen take your left leg up to

[34:08] meet your right now if this goes

[34:10] straight into your lower back and you

[34:11] just feel like this is really

[34:12] uncomfortable then what I want you to do

[34:14] is I want you to bend your knees

[34:16] bringing your calves parallel to the

[34:18] ground we're not drawing the knees into

[34:21] the chest that's a resting pose we're

[34:23] not resting yet we're taking the legs

[34:25] out so that the calves are parallel to

[34:29] the ground again so you've got that that

[34:32] angle with the hips now or the knees

[34:34] outlined the hips otherwise more of a

[34:38] challenge keep the legs at 45 take your

[34:40] arms out to a chi and then from here

[34:44] keep your shoulders rounded and when you

[34:47] just sway into your right hip letting

[34:50] the left hip lift but your left shoulder

[34:52] stays down inhale through Center and

[34:55] exhale over to the other side I'm going

[35:00] to change my side okay

[35:01] into the edge of the conservatory take

[35:04] this side to side and I'll Center exhale

[35:07] right inhale Center exhale left but keep

[35:12] the shoulders grounded let the opposite

[35:14] hip lift you should start to feel this

[35:16] in your abdomen I want to hear you again

[35:19] across time in space making little

[35:23] sounds about this okay now if that's

[35:27] enough for you stay with that if you

[35:30] want to make it harder well next you go

[35:32] to one side and then what you just swing

[35:34] the legs really low through the center

[35:37] swing them up and over to the other side

[35:39] and then up past 90 degrees if you can

[35:42] so you're creating these big circles

[35:44] with your legs and you can make them a

[35:49] little smaller to make it easier and

[35:55] then take it the other way where's your

[36:03] breath check on your breath I just

[36:05] realized I wasn't really breathing

[36:06] either take some deep breaths here

[36:21] and then from here when next you come up

[36:27] through 90 hold that there

[36:30] flex your feet take your legs back to 45

[36:34] and then from here keep your left leg up

[36:38] let your right leg come down extend the

[36:41] left at 45 and then just like before if

[36:44] that feels like too much bend up that

[36:46] right leg okay now stay there either

[36:49] again with that left leg at 45 on the

[36:52] right leg extended or the right leg bent

[36:54] stay there just take a few deep breaths

[36:57] really coming to your breath and I'm

[37:00] just gonna swap around the sides because

[37:02] otherwise happen to be in the wall all

[37:06] right and then from here I want you to

[37:09] take that left leg up to 90 flexing the

[37:13] foot like you're holding up the ceiling

[37:15] and again connect deeply into your

[37:18] breathing and then from there take that

[37:29] left leg bring it down to a low hover

[37:32] flex the foot and then from there swing

[37:37] that leg out and then all the way back

[37:41] up so you take the left leg down out and

[37:46] up but keep the right side grounded as

[37:49] you do this if you really feel this book

[37:51] in your hip but also in your obliques

[37:55] where's the bra

[38:18] take two more and then when next to you

[38:27] take that leg up to 90 degrees taking

[38:30] inhale and exhale then the left knee

[38:33] into the chest flip the fingers up

[38:35] interlace that over the shins likes both

[38:38] feet relax the shoulders down try to

[38:40] relax the head down take a moment to

[38:42] sigh out

[38:50] you

[39:01] all right and then from here unwind your

[39:06] arms take them back out to a tea

[39:09] lift up left leg up toward 90 degrees

[39:11] and then take your right up to meet your

[39:13] left now from here you can just I'm just

[39:16] sooner if ever it needs to show you can

[39:17] just let the feet actually relax rather

[39:19] than flex them and then from here I want

[39:22] you to start to criss cross your legs so

[39:24] you're going back and forth and your

[39:27] knees are involved here it's not just

[39:29] your ankles and then I want you to criss

[39:31] cross the legs down to 45 and criss

[39:35] crossing back up to 90 if this is a new

[39:38] move for you you might be going into a

[39:40] panic right now it's okay just just your

[39:44] abs I take them up and down and if it's

[39:48] I'm too easy at for you can I take them

[39:51] really low and then back up to 90 and

[39:54] just take a few more of those

[39:57] criss crossing up and down back and

[40:00] forth

[40:07] all right and then when next you get

[40:11] back up to 90 I want you to slow it down

[40:14] so snail speed okay Yoyogi snails yoga

[40:19] snails so we're gonna criss cross back

[40:24] and forth oh nice and slow your core

[40:28] then criss cross back up to 90 and again

[40:35] nice strong core breathe

[40:43] one more 90 flex your feet like you're

[40:58] holding up the ceiling with both legs

[41:01] and then exhale bend the knees take the

[41:06] soles of the feet down to the ground and

[41:08] then from here take a moment just to

[41:11] sigh out just let go of anything that

[41:19] you need to let go of so any tension

[41:21] that builds up just a howl suspicions

[41:30] that in your home practice you'll allow

[41:33] yourself to sigh more than you would in

[41:35] class but just as a reminder

[41:38] you've never need an invitation to sigh

[41:41] to release tension just let yourself

[41:44] release that tension through your breath

[41:46] anytime you need all right from here I

[41:50] want you to draw your hands down now to

[41:53] the sides of your torso walk your heel

[41:56] up toward your bottom as close as is

[41:58] comfortable

[41:59] so the heels are still on the ground

[42:01] here so we're not lifting them I'm

[42:03] really bringing them up to the bottom

[42:05] but heels on the ground walking about as

[42:08] close as is comfortable without

[42:09] wrenching the knees and then from here I

[42:13] want you to point your toes so that your

[42:17] toes are square in Florida and really

[42:18] know

[42:18] sometimes we have a tendency to point

[42:20] the toes out really square the toes

[42:23] forward this will help your knees and

[42:25] then all you can start to feel the

[42:27] foundation so you've ground through the

[42:29] wall the side and the heel of each foot

[42:32] you're really pressing down through each

[42:35] foot and then I'm going to imagine that

[42:37] you have puppet strings between your

[42:39] wrists and your hips and you're going to

[42:42] press through your feet and how lift the

[42:43] hips lift the pelvis will lift the arms

[42:46] take the backs of the hands all the way

[42:49] to the earth behind you as you're

[42:50] lifting up and then exhale and slowly

[42:53] come back down

[42:56] and we'll do about four more of these

[42:59] so press through your feet and he'll

[43:00] lift the hips lift the pelvis with the

[43:02] arms and exhale release one more all

[43:49] right and just relax the arms down start

[43:53] to press through your feet and how lift

[43:56] the hips lift the pelvis and then

[43:58] interlace your fingers under your body

[44:01] bringing the palms together and then we

[44:03] just start to walk the shoulder blades

[44:05] together so that you're hugging your

[44:07] spine and we keep it lifting up now be

[44:10] aware of your knees it's very easy to

[44:12] let the knees tip out to the sides here

[44:14] I wanted to keep squeezing through the

[44:16] thighs that you're squeezing a block or

[44:18] book a big Russian novel so many of you

[44:22] know that very bad joke but yeah one

[44:25] piece between your legs

[44:30] anything's wrong with my screams and

[44:33] lift and then from there it's that's

[44:37] enough stay there if you want to take it

[44:41] further press through your left foot and

[44:43] then he'll lift your right leg straight

[44:44] up to the sky it's very easy to tip into

[44:47] either side with this so do your best to

[44:49] really lift your toes like you are

[44:52] pressing a button on the ceiling with

[44:54] your toes and again connect into your

[44:58] breath and then from your exhale bend

[45:05] your right knee place the angle of your

[45:08] right foot just above your left knee on

[45:11] the v side not on the shoot inside and

[45:14] then unwind your fingers on line your

[45:16] shoulders and take your back down let

[45:20] that knee continue to be out to that

[45:22] right knee bent out to the side and flex

[45:26] that right foot again just to help

[45:28] protect the knee from there pop your

[45:30] left foot off the ground and then thread

[45:34] your right arm through that triangle

[45:36] made by your right leg and then other

[45:38] interlace your fingers over your shin if

[45:41] you can reach flexing the left foot or

[45:44] behind the back of the left back if you

[45:46] can't reach okay and then from there I

[45:50] want you to press that right knee away

[45:51] from the shoulder as long as that feels

[45:53] okay to the knee connecting to your

[45:57] breath and then from here I reduced to

[46:03] take a little mini rock and roll's

[46:05] and just find the edges of your balance

[46:10] what sneezing about this room up

[46:16] alright notice how that stretch feels

[46:27] and then rock back to Center and then

[46:31] from here unwind your fingers behind

[46:36] your legs lift your arms with your legs

[46:38] up into the sky

[46:39] coming into an overturned book and then

[46:44] exhale bend your knees take the soles of

[46:52] their feet down to the ground and then

[46:55] from here walk your heels up to your

[46:57] Obama's closest is comfortable against

[47:00] where your toes forward arms at your

[47:02] sides this time just going straight up

[47:04] into the bridge up and stack szubin

[47:06] asana press through your feet find all

[47:09] three corners of the feet feel that

[47:11] foundation of the earth underneath and

[47:13] then how what if the hips lift the

[47:15] pelvis and again interlace your fingers

[47:19] under your body walk the shoulder bones

[47:22] in if you can see the video right now

[47:26] I'm being visited by many furries okay

[47:30] and then from there we're going to press

[47:34] through the right foot inhale lift the

[47:38] left leg up if that feels okay to you

[47:53] and then exhale bend that left knee

[47:57] place the left ankle over the right knee

[48:01] flex the left foot turn that left knee

[48:04] out to the side pop your right foot off

[48:07] the ground

[48:08] thread your left hand through that

[48:10] triangle made by your left leg flex both

[48:13] feet interlace the fingers either over

[48:16] the right shin or around the back of the

[48:19] right thigh and then from here again

[48:22] press your left knee away from the

[48:24] shoulder as much as is comfortable and

[48:26] then start to take little circles around

[48:53] and then rock back through Center unwind

[48:58] the fingers and then from there start to

[49:04] unwind your arms unwind your legs reach

[49:07] them up into the sky again and how and

[49:10] then exhale bend the knees into the

[49:13] chest take the hands up to the knees

[49:16] take a moment just just sigh out there

[49:23] and then from there spread your hands up

[49:26] between your legs and reach for the

[49:28] insides of your feet with your hands so

[49:32] that the knees are coming down toward

[49:35] the sides of your chest for the

[49:36] scientists or towards your armpits and

[49:39] reflect the feet up to the sky this is

[49:41] our happy baby pose if you can see why

[49:44] it's called this now if that's enough

[49:47] stay there if you want to take this a

[49:50] little bit further from the wall and

[49:58] then from here if you want to take this

[50:00] a little bit further take your elbows

[50:04] under the outsides of your knees wrap

[50:06] your hands to the outsides of your feet

[50:08] so it's like your arms are these vines

[50:10] just crawling up and around the legs and

[50:14] then take them into rock and sway to

[50:18] play and be the happy baby and then from

[50:39] here unwind your arms unwind your legs

[50:43] take your hands to your knees and then

[50:47] we're just going to play with something

[50:48] here emphasis on the key word play so I

[50:52] want you to tuck the chin into your

[50:53] chest and if for any reason you don't

[50:56] want to rock on your spine don't okay

[50:59] listen to your body know your body

[51:02] likewise there's a difference between

[51:05] pain and discomfort discomfort is fine

[51:08] pain is not so you would need to always

[51:10] distinguish between those so from here

[51:13] take your hands to your knees tuck the

[51:15] chin in toward your chest or to raqqa

[51:16] onto the soles of your feet but then

[51:20] we're going to rock back and get a

[51:23] little momentum and start to pop up okay

[51:26] so we're just wrapping pop have a peg

[51:30] and then if you want to really go for it

[51:34] if that comes easily try popping up onto

[51:38] one leg into a frog squat okay alright

[51:57] so here what I do is if you're able take

[52:03] the soles of your feet so that they're

[52:06] coming flat onto the earth for some

[52:10] people this would break the arch of the

[52:12] foot don't break your foot if the hips

[52:16] aren't ready for this don't do that

[52:19] we've actually done probably more for

[52:20] the hips then for the core even so far

[52:22] hips are very involved in our yoga

[52:24] practice so soles of the feet flat on

[52:29] the earth if they can if they can't

[52:32] please don't worry stay up on the balls

[52:34] of your feet instead okay and then from

[52:38] here we're going to take

[52:40] elbows bring them against the insides of

[52:43] the knees draw the palms together into

[52:45] prayer really perhaps your elbow and

[52:47] your knee against each other so it's not

[52:49] just thingies it's not just the elbows

[52:51] but they're both pressing and the roll

[52:53] the shoulders back and really lift

[52:55] elongate the spine so we're coming into

[52:58] malasana into a yogic squat and just

[53:02] breathe and then from here again about

[53:17] marrying whether how it works with the

[53:19] camera I'll figure this out

[53:21] for next time but from here I'm going to

[53:23] take my left hand and bring it down in

[53:25] front of the knee it's really common to

[53:29] try to swing that arm around the back of

[53:32] the knee keep it out in front placing

[53:35] the hand on the floor or if you have a

[53:36] block and you need to lift you can put

[53:39] your hand on the block as well and then

[53:41] inhale swing your right arm up into the

[53:43] sky and then just follow that with your

[53:45] gaze as long as that's comfortable for

[53:47] your neck and just breathe your shins

[53:51] might be talking to you just let them

[53:54] talk and then a slightly more advanced

[53:58] option wrap your right arm around behind

[54:00] your back and then you're going to skirt

[54:02] the top of your left hand against the

[54:05] ground and then clasp your fingers

[54:06] around behind your back okay so that the

[54:10] knee is around or is in the middle of

[54:14] that left arm basically okay and you can

[54:18] actually look forward and that's gonna

[54:20] offer something slightly different then

[54:22] turning and looking out to the side

[54:24] find what feels right to you I'm not

[54:26] really bothered which you do and then

[54:31] unwind we lift that right arm back that

[54:34] and then exhale take the right hand down

[54:37] bring it out in front of the knee and

[54:41] then inhale lift the left arm up to the

[54:43] sky and exhale wrap that left hand

[54:50] around the back skirt the top of your

[54:52] right hand

[54:53] against the floor clasping the arms

[54:57] around behind the back of that leg and

[55:10] then unwind and then exhale take both

[55:16] hands down to the ground here's the

[55:18] glory moment for your shins we roll

[55:21] forward take the hands down and then

[55:24] from here and I'm turning but you don't

[55:27] need to turn so from here take your big

[55:30] toes together bring them behind you

[55:33] bring it all free kick your bum to your

[55:36] heels take the knees slightly wide so

[55:39] we're coming into a wide angle child's

[55:41] pose and then slide your hands down

[55:43] between the legs and not between the

[55:47] legs slant to slide your arms out in

[55:49] front of you and let your head relax

[55:50] down between your arms and just take a

[55:54] moment to side

[56:29] how much time we've been doing this okay

[56:37] so from here I just want you to tuck the

[56:41] chin toward your chest start to roll up

[56:43] take your hands down toward the ground

[56:46] draw the knees into a hip distance

[56:48] stance I want you to curl your toes

[56:50] under behind you start to sit back into

[56:52] your heels it won't be comfortable okay

[56:57] it won't unless I've met a couple I've

[57:01] actually met two people who find this

[57:03] fine and actually find the tops of the

[57:04] feet down excruciatingly I think there's

[57:06] some reverse fashion thing happening

[57:08] there but from here just do the best

[57:11] that you can take a couple more breaths

[57:13] we're just stretching the fashion the

[57:16] sheath around the muscles all right and

[57:24] we're going to take the hands and then

[57:30] from here because this is the first

[57:32] video I think I'm gonna start to cut it

[57:35] here we've done a bit for the hips a bit

[57:37] for the core a bit for the back and I

[57:41] think I'm liking making these videos so

[57:44] hopefully there might even be more than

[57:47] one a week but for now I think this is a

[57:49] good start for us and again those of you

[57:52] who are my clients this will be super

[57:53] familiar basic stuff but it's great to

[57:56] have a reminder right it's always good

[57:59] always good to go back to basics and

[58:00] remind ourselves so from here what I

[58:05] would like you to do now is actually

[58:08] take about one to two minutes to just

[58:12] move in any way that would feel good to

[58:15] you I'm gonna do the same but don't

[58:18] worry about what I'm doing okay

[58:20] so just take a couple minutes move in

[58:23] any way that would feel good to you it

[58:25] doesn't have to be yoga poses it doesn't

[58:27] even have to be stretches maybe you just

[58:29] want to flop out maybe you want to stand

[58:31] up because

[58:32] practice today was grounded it's a good

[58:35] learning curve for me because there is a

[58:40] learning curve I'll change my setup for

[58:43] the next video so yeah two minutes just

[58:50] move in in any way that would feel good

[58:53] to you once you've had some movement

[1:00:22] just laughing at the cab once you've had

[1:00:25] some movement when you're ready just

[1:00:28] come down onto your back

[1:00:29] okay now you've got two options on your

[1:00:32] back you can either bend your knees and

[1:00:35] that will be easier on your lower back

[1:00:37] if you have sensitivities in your back

[1:00:39] or you can extend the legs out just

[1:00:43] letting them flop in display however

[1:00:46] feels right to you okay so if there are

[1:00:50] no sensitivities in the back legs out

[1:00:52] flops play great otherwise meet them and

[1:00:57] again whoever's comfortable if you want

[1:00:59] to let the knees fall together that's

[1:01:01] fine so from here just find whatever

[1:01:06] feels right to you there okay I'm not

[1:01:10] going to stay laying down because now

[1:01:14] what I'd like you to do is just find

[1:01:15] that comfortable position and also if

[1:01:19] you have a blanket or jumper handy and

[1:01:22] you just want to keep yourself cozy

[1:01:23] please do so that you can stay warm and

[1:01:27] then when you're ready just really relax

[1:01:32] down relax the shoulders out relax the

[1:01:36] hands close the eyes and take a few

[1:01:44] laughs deep in house through the nose

[1:01:46] with exhales siding or blowing the air

[1:01:49] out of the mouth just do that a few

[1:02:02] times letting go whatever you need to

[1:02:10] let go of

[1:02:33] and then just let your natural breath

[1:02:36] take over again feel your eyelids become

[1:02:50] heavy over your eyes to the back of the

[1:02:59] head and the backs of the shoulders just

[1:03:03] melting down and your arms and legs also

[1:03:12] melting down connecting to this precious

[1:03:16] earth below feel where your

[1:03:28] Meteor from here if you notice any

[1:03:50] external sounds either from my home or

[1:03:54] yours

[1:03:55] just allow them to be vibration to be

[1:03:59] part of the present not good not bad

[1:04:03] just there and as you relax down take a

[1:04:19] moment to really feel yourself rooted to

[1:04:23] this earth and drawn to your heart a

[1:04:32] sense of gratitude this earth gives us

[1:04:42] everything it gives us our breath our

[1:04:48] food our nourishment our playground all

[1:04:56] the creatures we share it with all the

[1:05:02] other beautiful souls we share it with

[1:05:10] take a moment to really appreciate that

[1:05:13] you are here on earth right now not only

[1:05:23] one of seven billion humans put one of

[1:05:28] innumerable creatures

[1:05:48] draw your gratitude back from this earth

[1:05:53] to your body and the fact that your body

[1:05:58] allows you to interact with this earth

[1:06:01] and all of the other creatures

[1:06:18] you

[1:06:26] and take your breath and deepen it

[1:06:33] and again deepen it with gratitude draw

[1:06:54] some movement back into your fingers and

[1:06:57] your toes just letting them dance

[1:07:00] preciously move and from here gently

[1:07:18] roll to one side in the fetal position

[1:07:22] and slowly bring your body all the way

[1:07:39] back up to seated

[1:07:49] take your hands into prayer and to

[1:07:52] Anjali mudra in front of the heart and

[1:07:59] offer the following words to yourself

[1:08:02] and your mind and your mind say may I be

[1:08:09] happy may I always feel safe may I be

[1:08:18] free I think of another human furry or

[1:08:26] otherwise hold them in your heart stay

[1:08:31] in your mind for them may you be happy

[1:08:36] may you always

[1:08:39] we'll say may you be free he lose come

[1:08:45] on - for this and then for all creatures

[1:08:50] may all creatures be happy may all

[1:08:55] creatures always feel safe may all

[1:08:59] creatures be free and about yourself

[1:09:05] honouring your body your light your

[1:09:09] practice and this earth and thank you

[1:09:14] all so much for practicing with me today

[1:09:18] this is just a basic section for the

[1:09:22] back before the hips just to get us

[1:09:24] started and to get me started to

[1:09:27] understand this online format I hope you

[1:09:34] have a beautiful morning afternoon

[1:09:37] evening night whatever time of day you

[1:09:40] are in as you watch this and I am you

[1:09:45] you know who's going to be 13 in May but

[1:09:50] looks and acts like a puppy still other

[1:09:54] than that we are sending you all love

[1:09:58] all around the world

Frequently Asked Questions

Julie Ela Grace says she teaches a style of yoga known as Kripalu yoga, which she describes as mindful, compassionate practice. In her first at-home session she emphasizes breath, gentle warm-ups, and core work, while inviting students to adjust every movement to their own bodies.
Julie Ela Grace advises checking with a doctor or health care professional before starting any yoga practice. She also says her guidance is not a replacement for medical advice, and that students should seek care if they feel unwell or are unsure about any part of the practice.
She explains that yoga comes from a word meaning to yoke, and says the practice unites the mind, body and spirit. In her framing, mind-body work is one continuous practice rather than separate physical and mental tasks.
No. Grace says a yoga mat is helpful but not required, and that you can sit on a cushion from your sofa if you don't have a block or bolster. For sections that use props, she says she will announce them in advance and offer options without them.
Grace guides students through a breath cycle of deep inhales and sighing exhales to release stress and tension, then encourages noticing the natural breath. She tells students to return to the present moment when the mind is busy or worried.
She says she started yoga on a DVD at 19 during thyroid cancer treatment and found it brought mental and emotional healing as well as physical help. That experience underlies her emphasis on compassion, listening to the body, and practicing without pressure.
