From Feeling to Being: Danielle LaPorte'sEvolution Beyond the Desire Map

Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte was ready to quit. Not in a dramatic way—in the most romantic, deliberate way possible. She'd seriously considered walking away from her creative life to meditate all morning, grow potatoes on her deck for her neighbors, wear white peasant blouses, and never check Instagram again. It wasn't resentment or burnout speaking. It was a genuine question: Is this what I actually want? For someone who'd built a global movement around intentional living, the irony wasn't lost on her.

What makes this moment worth examining isn't that she was burned out. It's that she didn't answer the question the way her most famous work taught millions of people to answer it. She didn't sit down and ask: "How do I want to feel?" Instead, something deeper was stirring—a recognition that the framework that had served her and nearly 400,000 people through *The Desire Map* was only half the story.

The Architecture of Desire Map

Before we understand the evolution, we need the foundation. *The Desire Map*—the book, day planner system, and coaching methodology that Danielle pioneered—operates on a deceptively simple question: How do you want to feel? Not what do you want to achieve. Not what should make you happy. But what emotional states guide you toward authenticity?

The methodology walks you through discovering your core desired feelings. Someone might arrive at: clear, inspired, loved, connected. Then you make decisions through that lens. Should you take this job? Does it align with feeling inspired and connected? Should you end this friendship? Is it keeping you from feeling clear? The system is elegant because it puts you at the center of your own life—not external metrics, not shoulds, not someone else's definition of success.

The Desire Map became a phenomenon. Facilitators spread it across thirty countries. It showed up in corporate boardrooms and therapists' offices. For a specific kind of person—ambitious, self-aware, willing to interrogate their own motivations—it felt like permission to stop performing and start living. It still does.

But Danielle kept living. And somewhere in that living, especially during what she describes as a "dark night of the soul"—a year of turmoil and identity dissolution—she discovered that feelings weren't the final truth.

When Feelings Become the Problem

The dark night wasn't poetic. It was rough. And during it, Danielle had an experience that would reshape everything she'd teach. A friend called—someone who didn't know the depth of what she was going through. The friend was falling apart herself. And out of something like instinct, Danielle asked her about her situation first.

What followed was a conversation entirely focused on the friend's pain. Danielle did what she's always done: loved, witnessed, showed up as a friend. They never got into her own agony. But at the end of the call, something unexpected happened. She felt useful. She felt connected to something larger than her own suffering. Even in her own anguish, she'd been able to be loving, to make a contribution, to be compassionate. She'd even forgiven people during this dark night.

In that moment, a new realization cracked open: fulfillment isn't about a feeling. Fulfillment is about a way of being.

This is the distinction that changes everything. The Desire Map asks: "How do I want to feel?" It's an inward question. It's powerful. But it carries an unspoken assumption—that if you can arrange your life to generate those feelings consistently, you'll be fulfilled. And that's where real life gets in the way. Life doesn't cooperate. Some days, no matter how well you've optimized for inspiration, you wake up uninspired. No matter how much you've cultivated clarity, you're confused. No matter how carefully you've designed for connection, you feel alone.

The old framework then becomes a trap. Because if you've decided you want to feel inspired, and today you're depleted, you're not just depleted—you're failing at your own system. You're doing something wrong. You've chosen the wrong job, the wrong relationship, the wrong life. But what if the question itself was incomplete?

Danielle's new book, *How to Be Loving*, emerges from asking something different: "What do I want to embody? What do I want to be, all the time, no matter what?" Not "What will make me happy today?" but "Who do I want to show up as when everything is falling apart?"

From Feeling to Mastery

This isn't positive thinking repackaged. In fact, Danielle explicitly rejects the "just think positive" industrial complex. Positive thinking, when it's forced or used to bypass genuine pain, does more harm than good. It creates a split—between what you're actually experiencing and what you're supposed to believe about yourself. That friction is where shame lives.

What she's describing instead comes from the contemplative traditions—what she calls the mastery that "all the mystics are talking about." It's the practice of abiding, of being steady regardless of the storm. It's knowing your own divinity, your own fundamental worth, independent of what anyone says or what you're feeling in a given moment.

For Danielle, that embodiment crystallized around one word: loving. Not in the soft, greeting-card sense. In the sense of attention, of compassion, of choosing to show up for others and yourself with care even when it's inconvenient. Especially when it's inconvenient. Especially when you don't feel like it.

This shifts the entire game. Suddenly you're not trying to engineer your emotions. You're building practices that align you with a way of being. You're asking: "Can I choose loving right now? Can I choose compassion? Can I choose forgiveness?" The answer, it turns out, is yes. Even during a dark night. Especially during a dark night.

The Intelligence of the Heart

One of the most practical distinctions Danielle introduces is the difference between thinking from your brain and thinking from your heart. When you're in conflict, stressed, or anxious, your default is likely the "fight" response—the protective, fearful mind. "If I'm really coming from a fight response," she asks in the interview, "what's the opposite? Be gentle." Not forced. Not fake. Genuinely gentle.

This isn't mysticism. It's neuroscience meeting wisdom. The heart has its own intelligence—a way of perceiving situations that doesn't run through fear first. When you can access that, decisions look different. Relationships shift. The things that seemed urgent and demanding suddenly reveal themselves as ego-driven, and you can let them go.

She describes using a specific practice: when she's gotten really agitated with herself, she steps back and thinks from her heart. "This is why this works for me," she says—because it interrupts the self-judgment loop. It creates space for compassion.

The One Sentence That Shifts Everything

Buried in the interview is what might be the most immediately useful tool: a one-sentence shortcut to instant compassion. It works like this—in that moment when someone is needy or annoying or pushing your buttons, and you're about to react with impatience or dismissal, you pause and think: "This is a human being who is suffering." That's it. That sentence. It doesn't make the behavior okay. It doesn't mean you have to keep the person in your life. But it does collapse the distance between you and them. It activates your own humanity in response to theirs. And from that place, whatever you do next—set a boundary, walk away, stay and help—comes from love instead of defensiveness.

It's the opposite of toxic positivity. It doesn't deny the difficulty. It just refuses to deny the person's inherent worth while it's happening.

What Ambitious Women Actually Want

Danielle notes that there's something ambitious women secretly long for—and it isn't another achievement. It isn't more optimization. It's permission to stop performing. It's the chance to be held, to be loved as you are, not as you produce. The irony is that this desire often drives the very ambition that keeps people from experiencing it. You're trying to become successful enough to deserve rest. Worthy enough to be loved. Healed enough to be accepted.

The philosophy Danielle is teaching turns that inside out. You don't become worthy of love by achieving. You're already worthy. The practice is learning to be loving—to yourself and to others—not because you've earned it, but because it's the mastery available to you right now, in this moment, with what you actually have.

This explains why she almost quit. When everything is stripped away—the accomplishments, the platforms, the perfect life design—you're left with the actual question: Do I want to be here? Do I want to keep showing up? And if so, who do I want to be while I'm doing it? Those questions don't need a platform or an audience to matter. They're the ones that reshape a life.

Where to go from here

The practice Danielle suggests isn't complicated, but it requires showing up consistently. Start by asking yourself: "What do I want to embody?" Not "How do I want to feel?" Let your answer be something like loving, compassionate, gentle, forgiving—a way of being rather than an emotional state. Then, when life gets hard (and it will), the question isn't "Why do I feel this way?" It's "Can I still be loving right now? Can I still be kind?" The answer will often surprise you. Sometimes you'll fail. That's when you ask it again. That's when you practice. That's where the real transformation lives—not in the perfection of your feelings, but in the consistency of your character. You can find more of Danielle's work through her podcast "With Love, Danielle" and her latest book *How to Be Loving*, which extends these ideas into daily practice.

[0:00] you have this great bit about a shortcut

[0:03] to instant compassion one easy sentence

[0:07] that's a shortcut to to instant

[0:09] compassion you say it so we make sure we

[0:11] get it right I know what it is and you

[0:13] know what this morning I was thinking

[0:14] for Leo's gonna love that oh and look

[0:17] yeah of course so here you go folks

[0:21] Danielle Laporte wrote this one simple

[0:23] easy sentence

[0:27] if I told you there was one thing you

[0:29] could do to alter the course improve the

[0:33] quality of your relationships your work

[0:35] and your happiness would you do it I

[0:37] hope so because my guest today is here

[0:39] to tell us what that one thing is and

[0:41] how to start right now Daniella Port is

[0:43] a member of Oprah Super Soul 100 and the

[0:45] former director of a future studies

[0:47] think tank in Washington DC she's the

[0:49] creator of the heart centered membership

[0:50] and the heart centered leadership

[0:51] program with over 400 leaders in 30

[0:54] countries her podcast with love Danielle

[0:56] often ranks in iTunes top 10 for

[0:58] wellness she's the author of The Fire

[1:00] Starter sessions white hot truth the

[1:02] desire map and her newest book how to be

[1:04] loving is available now

[1:06] Danielle oh my goodness it's so good to

[1:10] have you back

[1:11] so

[1:13] um I gotta be real this I think this

[1:16] baby I know I have my uncorrected proof

[1:18] this is your best book yet I'm just

[1:20] making that claim I don't know if you

[1:22] feel that way but I feel that way

[1:24] um I love it

[1:26] thank you you would hope it would be my

[1:28] best book yet like if you're not getting

[1:30] more like seasoned and clear and precise

[1:33] yeah yeah but I mean I know I have like

[1:35] I at least have thoughts sometimes I'm

[1:37] like oh was my best thing that thing or

[1:39] that it was it already done so I just

[1:41] wanted to acknowledge that so I have to

[1:42] start at the top because this actually

[1:44] really caught me and you and I've been

[1:46] friends for so long and I don't know if

[1:49] I actually knew this about you you wrote

[1:52] on my most recent year in review

[1:54] exercise I seriously considered walking

[1:57] away from my creative life which I tend

[1:59] to reconsider every few years I had this

[2:01] romantic notion of meditating all

[2:03] morning growing potatoes on my deck for

[2:05] my neighbors wearing white peasant

[2:06] blouses and never checking Instagram

[2:08] ever ever again

[2:12] I was like yes and I feel as though so

[2:16] many of us uh people I know myself

[2:19] included people in our audience like we

[2:22] have that conversation so tell me more

[2:26] about the thought process and the

[2:29] consideration of like oh do I walk away

[2:31] and then you came back around to well I

[2:33] came to my sentence my senses and I

[2:35] wrote this book and said

[2:37] it was you know I'm like light about it

[2:40] but it was a real passage like when the

[2:43] world started falling apart and all the

[2:44] World Health situation

[2:47] three questions came up I really felt

[2:51] that this was a call to just like start

[2:53] throwing stuff overboard so it's like

[2:55] okay let's look at my life and I

[2:57] actually was going into questions about

[3:00] mortality like maybe I'm meant to check

[3:02] out maybe this thing is going to take me

[3:04] maybe how long I just like looked at it

[3:07] do I really really want to be here I

[3:10] have a kid I don't want to go but maybe

[3:12] I should go maybe my kid has his own

[3:14] Karma you know uh so I had a

[3:17] conversation with life about like okay

[3:20] I'm gonna get comfortable with

[3:21] uncertainty and then there was career

[3:24] like what's the next big thing after

[3:25] loving your people being alive career

[3:29] it's like I've always said to my son

[3:32] whose name I now say publicly because

[3:33] he's given me permission I always say to

[3:35] Harper

[3:36] like if everything fell apart you and I

[3:39] could get like a small one-bedroom place

[3:42] with parquet floors and we would be so

[3:46] happy like we're gonna be good no matter

[3:48] what happens so maybe I'm supposed to

[3:51] have just some parquet floors in a small

[3:53] apartment and not do this thing and like

[3:56] the spiritual calling like my next

[3:58] um you know this is an overused phrase

[4:00] in our space but like my next Edge

[4:02] would be anonymity

[4:05] just disappear

[4:07] and then there was a bigger question

[4:09] which you know as my friend you know is

[4:11] it was part of my life for a while I was

[4:12] like I want to meet my person I'm ready

[4:15] for the partnership for the Beloved and

[4:17] while I'm throwing things overboard

[4:20] I think I should throw that desire

[4:21] overboard too and just there's so much

[4:24] love in my life and let's just really

[4:27] just bake in I don't know

[4:31] and then I just yeah then came I'm just

[4:33] gonna grow potatoes on my deck

[4:35] [Laughter]

[4:44] book

[4:45] how to be loving had you been thinking

[4:48] about it working on a while the reason I

[4:49] ask is um you know the most recent big

[4:52] thing that I've created was time genius

[4:54] and I actually started it years ago so

[4:56] it was this little seed right that I had

[4:58] been collecting notes on collecting

[5:00] research on like I felt it coming just

[5:03] like I felt everything is figureoutable

[5:04] coming so I was curious about your

[5:06] process like you were kind of going do I

[5:08] grow potatoes and wear white peasant

[5:10] shirts and did how to be loving like was

[5:13] that already an idea that you were kind

[5:15] of nurturing or did it get born out of

[5:17] your willingness to be in the

[5:18] uncertainty

[5:20] both

[5:22] the seed of this was the desire map so

[5:28] almost 400 000 people desire mapped I

[5:31] had this whole

[5:32] crew of facilitators around the world so

[5:36] for those especially for people who are

[5:37] just meeting you not to interrupt that

[5:38] they're like they may be what the hell

[5:40] is desire Maps the desire map was a book

[5:42] that turned into a day planner system

[5:44] that turned into a coaching system and

[5:47] The Guiding question was how do you want

[5:48] to feel and I walk you through this

[5:50] methodology you came up with your core

[5:52] desired feelings and I want to feel

[5:54] clear and inspired and love and

[5:57] connected let's say and you made all

[6:00] your decisions according to those core

[6:01] desired feelings and that was awesome

[6:03] and I realized that is not the end game

[6:06] that is only half of the story it's an

[6:09] important half of the story but for me I

[6:12] got to this is just developmental

[6:16] yes feelings are this GPS system yes

[6:19] they should guide your life yes they

[6:21] point you in the direction of like

[6:22] you're awake you're constricted

[6:24] yeah but

[6:27] life is not about doing everything you

[6:29] got to do that day to just be happy

[6:30] because you're not going to be happy

[6:32] every day

[6:33] and the Revelation for me about the new

[6:37] question and how this emerged

[6:39] was actually talking to a friend

[6:41] as most of my Revelations come in

[6:43] relationship I really believe all

[6:45] relationships are vehicles for healing

[6:47] that's it whether it's with your mother

[6:50] or the guy who is giving you your tea at

[6:53] the cafe

[6:55] and I was in a really dark night

[6:59] and we can unpack what Dark Knight of

[7:01] Soul actually means but it was a rough

[7:05] passage it was it was a year of turmoil

[7:08] and identity dissolution all those

[7:10] things

[7:11] and anybody who would call or reach out

[7:13] of course I'm in pain I want them to

[7:15] check in how are you doing and a friend

[7:18] called who I hadn't talked to in a while

[7:19] she didn't know the state I was in and

[7:21] she was also falling apart and just out

[7:24] of instinct I asked her how she was

[7:26] doing first and we ended up having a

[7:29] whole conversation focused on her and I

[7:31] did what I do which is just love and

[7:34] witness and be a friend

[7:37] and at the end we never got into my

[7:39] thing and at the end of the call I just

[7:41] thought I was useful and that was

[7:43] meaningful

[7:44] and even in my own Agony I felt

[7:49] connected to something greater than me

[7:52] I was able to be loving I was able to

[7:55] make a contribution I was able to be

[7:57] compassionate

[7:58] there were people I forgave during my

[8:02] dark night

[8:03] and it really sunk in for me that

[8:07] fulfillment isn't about a Feeling

[8:10] fulfillment is about a way of being and

[8:13] that

[8:15] I got really clear that I want to be

[8:18] loving and compassionate for giving no

[8:20] matter what and this is

[8:22] the Mastery that all the mystics are

[8:24] talking about like you abide You're

[8:27] Going to Be steady no matter what the

[8:29] storm you're going to know your Divinity

[8:31] no matter what anybody says

[8:33] so a new question emerged which is what

[8:35] do I want to embody what do I want to be

[8:38] all the time no matter what which you

[8:41] know was love

[8:42] so I started with a very different book

[8:44] by the way the book deal was not for the

[8:46] book I ended up with oh really what was

[8:48] that scoop

[8:50] well this was going to be how to feel

[8:52] more this was going to be desire map 2.0

[8:55] you know and when it has that commercial

[8:57] success yeah of course everybody's like

[8:59] sure we'll take the next version oh yeah

[9:01] we want the sequel right it's a

[9:03] franchise yeah yeah but it takes a lot

[9:06] of Courage like I remember even having

[9:08] um the conversation in my own mind

[9:09] because you know how much I love

[9:11] marketing you know how much I love

[9:12] business I love books I love writing and

[9:14] I remember thinking to myself I'm like

[9:15] okay I did everything is figure outable

[9:17] should I do time is figure out a book

[9:19] like should I do money I literally

[9:21] started buying up domain names like you

[9:23] know wild because that's me and I was

[9:26] like no I don't want to and so I'm so

[9:30] happy that uh

[9:33] it was starting to go in One Direction

[9:35] and you listened to this and I had told

[9:37] you this when you and I spoke a few

[9:38] months back right when we were first

[9:39] talking about this book

[9:41] this has been the exact work that I have

[9:45] been

[9:46] diving into myself personally and so I

[9:48] was so excited to read this from you

[9:52] um and I love this you wrote when you

[9:54] turn to the intelligence of the heart

[9:57] you uncondition your mind of all kinds

[10:00] of social programming the frequency of

[10:02] Love dissolves eons of divisive dogma

[10:04] and elevates the quality of our thoughts

[10:07] so how do you see this call for

[10:10] gentleness as counterculture to so much

[10:13] of what we're all experiencing right now

[10:16] all this polarization

[10:18] has us want to fight yeah

[10:22] we even want to use love to fight

[10:25] I mean this gets into a conversation

[10:27] about social justice where you're really

[10:29] coming from a place of woundedness and

[10:31] ego you're fighting against something

[10:34] instead of you're really coming from a

[10:37] place of

[10:39] inclusiveness and heart and you're

[10:41] fighting for something that includes the

[10:43] benefit of all people

[10:45] so

[10:47] division polarization gets the ego mind

[10:50] the ego mind loves it the eagle mind is

[10:53] all about separating you're right you're

[10:56] wrong I'm unworthy you're more worthy I

[10:59] am Superior all of that division

[11:02] and

[11:05] the counter move the antidote I'm really

[11:09] into the concept right now of antidotes

[11:11] is the opposite like if you're in a

[11:13] fight what's the opposite be gentle if

[11:16] there's too much chaos what's the

[11:18] antidote simplicity so it's like the

[11:21] medicine is

[11:23] counter-intuitive

[11:25] so gentleness is Counter Culture when

[11:28] we've got a culture that is not just

[11:30] polarized but obsessed with productivity

[11:33] that our value is based on how much we

[11:36] are getting done so rest and I don't

[11:39] mean rest in like

[11:42] Dropout sense

[11:44] but just have a flow in your life you

[11:48] know like we've been friends long enough

[11:49] you know what one of my earliest books I

[11:52] made the Declaration like you know

[11:54] balance is a myth yeah that was so naive

[11:59] it's not there's there's the rush and

[12:03] there's excellence and there's pushing

[12:05] and we know what it is to run

[12:07] professional

[12:10] marathons in this industry

[12:13] um but you have to be doing it from this

[12:15] balance of

[12:17] service and striving striving for the

[12:19] right reasons and

[12:21] and gentleness for most

[12:24] um

[12:25] ego-centered Minds is it's totally

[12:29] discombobulating cannot even yes because

[12:31] there's at least for me like if I tap

[12:34] into the conditioning the first thing

[12:36] like if we were doing a little instant

[12:38] like association test right gentleness

[12:40] weakness gentleness you're not going for

[12:43] it gentleness laziness gentleness you

[12:45] know you can kind of I can just start to

[12:47] list out the things and one of the many

[12:49] aspects of your book that I found so

[12:52] compelling was as I was reading it there

[12:55] were so many turns of phrases and

[12:57] sentences around Stillness and

[12:59] specifically this notion of tapping into

[13:03] the intelligence of our heart and I know

[13:06] when I am off my rocker I know when I am

[13:08] my worst self when

[13:11] this thing you know the mind the ego the

[13:14] conditioning has me and it's dragging me

[13:18] Stillness is not present

[13:20] and the moment I can drop in and slow

[13:23] down and like

[13:25] tap into my heart the clarity is usually

[13:29] pretty instant

[13:31] and the wisdom is there and so I loved

[13:34] this and I loved this notion of just the

[13:37] intelligence of your heart because it

[13:39] really is that isn't it like a whole

[13:41] other level of knowing and this natural

[13:45] intuitive opening that we're just not

[13:49] given any instructions for how to be

[13:51] that more frequently and I think that's

[13:53] one of the gifts of your work right now

[13:56] well the other power move

[13:58] with jet like the really I think the

[14:00] sister of gentleness is receptivity

[14:03] which is counter to striving

[14:07] and I talk a lot about this with

[14:10] business women

[14:12] so I just did a talk a couple months ago

[14:15] big consulting firm women in cybertech

[14:19] and I thought I have got to have it

[14:21] together for these women and right and

[14:25] you know right before I got on I was

[14:26] like no I just need to be me because I

[14:29] might be the antidote to what's going on

[14:31] in this organization

[14:33] and as soon as you start talking to

[14:35] overachieving women in a male-centric

[14:38] culture about receptivity you can hear

[14:42] the exhales like everybody leaves leans

[14:45] in like intuitively they know it's right

[14:48] and I even think psychologically they

[14:51] know there's a longing for this kind of

[14:54] more relaxed way of being but really

[14:57] where we like push it over the edge for

[14:59] them is that to make it clear that

[15:01] receptivity is the power move and so I

[15:04] talked to them about basking

[15:06] and I just run them through this like

[15:08] just one minute visualization everybody

[15:10] listening can do it now you're laying on

[15:12] a beach it's safe it's warm it's

[15:14] Paradise what do you have to do nothing

[15:17] you are just basking

[15:19] in the the nourishment of the Sun that

[15:23] is there for you the vitamin D wants to

[15:26] get into your every crevice you just

[15:28] need to be still enough

[15:30] and receptive enough

[15:33] to have it

[15:34] do its thing

[15:37] and because we're productivity obsessed

[15:39] and all the metrics and everything we we

[15:42] don't slow down and we're always I mean

[15:45] we know this in this Wellness space

[15:46] we're always looking for the answer

[15:47] outside of ourselves right but I think

[15:50] we're missing a part of that

[15:52] formula it's like yes be still

[15:56] but what we're really doing is we're

[15:58] turning to higher guidance like don't go

[16:00] to an influencer to figure out what

[16:03] you're supposed to do with your life

[16:05] turn to the source

[16:07] that's actually informing the universal

[16:10] intelligence that's making sure there is

[16:13] time and there is memory and there are

[16:15] trees and there is birth and all of that

[16:17] why don't you go turn to that for your

[16:19] directions because probably knows where

[16:21] you should go yeah yeah and there's no

[16:24] doing there's just receiving and then

[16:26] you rock and roll I call it a Stillness

[16:28] damage like you'd be still in the

[16:29] beginning of the project the

[16:31] relationship of your day then you go you

[16:34] do we are here get it done pull it off

[16:37] and then still at the end and we miss I

[16:40] think when we miss the Stillness at the

[16:42] end and we just gotta repeat the lesson

[16:44] the next day or the following year just

[16:46] like integrate what you learned

[16:48] have your shavasana in your day

[16:52] and then that's how you build wisdom

[16:53] yeah

[16:55] something else I circled and starred

[16:57] Insight begins with a desire to truly

[16:59] know what's going on it's as simple as

[17:01] pausing in the middle of an emotional

[17:03] bind with someone and thinking

[17:06] I wonder what they're experiencing now

[17:09] that's an act of love

[17:12] and when I read that it really had me

[17:15] sit for a minute and just

[17:19] marinate on the truth of that like that

[17:23] simple question I wonder what they're

[17:25] experiencing now you know again when my

[17:27] mind is going into the righteousness and

[17:30] and the frustration and this is all the

[17:33] things that they did wrong it's like

[17:34] you're 100 right that is an act of Love

[17:37] is that something that um you find

[17:40] yourself practicing

[17:42] yeah especially these last couple years

[17:44] my authority issues have just been

[17:47] on a red alert

[17:50] and what do you mean by that

[17:56] mandates restrictions

[18:00] polarity different choices so much

[18:02] judgment around different choices

[18:04] judgments around different perspectives

[18:05] judgments around questions oh my God

[18:07] we're yelling at people for questions

[18:09] that they're asking this is absurd yeah

[18:11] this is all Shadow stuff coming up

[18:14] but with someone with pre-existing

[18:17] Authority issues this has been

[18:19] challenging for me

[18:21] um but what I realized and the question

[18:23] of like hmm I wonder what their

[18:26] experience right now has really been

[18:27] helpful what I realized is on my

[18:28] authority issues were not about me

[18:31] thinking I knew better or I need to be

[18:33] in charge it was actually about my fear

[18:36] of being controlled because and how I

[18:39] put that together I was like I know this

[18:41] is my ego acting out because this is

[18:42] like this flare-up you know it says

[18:45] burst I'm not really 100 feeling in

[18:48] control this is not centered equilibrium

[18:51] like something's going on here and I

[18:53] thought okay well it's got to be

[18:55] fear-based what could I possibly be you

[18:57] know afraid of because this is this

[18:59] Authority is ridiculous

[19:02] and I just realized wow

[19:04] this is me not wanting to be controlled

[19:08] and that had me soften a lot I walked

[19:11] through the grocery store differently

[19:13] now

[19:14] yeah hey real quick and then we will get

[19:16] back to this amazing conversation with

[19:18] Danielle let's be honest stress happens

[19:20] to all of us right I mean it happens to

[19:22] me I've got the secret tool though that

[19:24] can absolutely dissolve it in less than

[19:27] five minutes flat no kidding it's free

[19:29] you can download it instantly go to

[19:31] Marie loves you.com slash stresslog

[19:34] that's Marie loves you.com slash

[19:37] stresslog go there now I've said this

[19:39] for a long time and I think it's you

[19:42] know freedom is my highest value so I

[19:45] very much resonate with and we joke

[19:48] about this joke about it with Josh I

[19:50] joke about other than like the moment I

[19:52] feel anything coming to restrict and I'm

[19:54] like no it's just a push out but I love

[19:58] this notion of just um again I was doing

[20:02] this before just before we uh started

[20:04] recording this you know I'm in New York

[20:05] right now it's fairly hot and I could

[20:09] feel when I get really hot I I get

[20:11] irritated like I get super irritated and

[20:13] I can just wait

[20:15] oh my God I get cranky like my

[20:18] I can feel my fuse getting shorter and

[20:20] I'm like you know everything just

[20:21] doesn't I'm like what am I gonna do with

[20:23] my hair let me shave it off like

[20:24] everything's just too much and I

[20:26] remember just thinking to myself like oh

[20:27] I just was reviewing all of Danielle's

[20:29] book this morning it's like Can I Be

[20:31] Loved from a higher place and let myself

[20:33] witness the frustration do you know what

[20:35] I mean like watch Marie the personality

[20:37] doing her whole frustration dance and

[20:40] actually just be that source of Love

[20:42] above it and it was actually very

[20:44] helpful I don't know if that translated

[20:45] you probably got it because you wrote

[20:46] the book but let me know if that didn't

[20:48] make any sense for my odd ones do you

[20:50] want to go we can go meta with that this

[20:52] is how to make sense of that

[20:54] you're agitated you're irritated

[20:56] whatever it is it's the heat it's the

[20:59] conversation it's a person or or you're

[21:02] really agitated with yourself it's like

[21:03] oh

[21:04] I'm not enough of this I can't even I'm

[21:06] ashamed of that I'm ashamed that I'm

[21:08] ashamed all those things okay so all

[21:09] right

[21:12] you say to yourself This is Gonna sound

[21:14] really poetic and esoteric but I'm gonna

[21:15] I'm gonna Anchor It Down For Us you say

[21:18] to yourself I'm the sky

[21:20] I'm this guy you look out your window

[21:22] you get your body outside and you

[21:25] consider that you are that vast okay so

[21:27] let's that's the practice let me back it

[21:30] up

[21:31] there's a reason that in Buddhist

[21:34] theology so much they refer to the sky

[21:37] the idea is

[21:39] to consider that your divine nature your

[21:42] Buddha nature your true self your loving

[21:45] substance is that vast you're that

[21:49] unlimited you are wrapping around the

[21:51] planet yeah okay so that's that's the

[21:54] you-ness that's your consciousness

[21:57] and then the heat the agitation the

[21:59] conversation your bad mood your

[22:02] disappointment those are clouds

[22:04] you don't say this is really important

[22:07] in terms of acceptance you don't say

[22:09] well that's a bad cloud and that cloud

[22:11] shouldn't be here it's here

[22:13] you're irritated you're you're bummed

[22:15] out

[22:17] okay it's gonna pass through but you're

[22:19] not the emotion you're not the feeling

[22:21] you're not that conversation

[22:24] that you had with someone and they you

[22:26] know said something that's stuck in your

[22:28] mind about you you know what anybody

[22:29] ever said about you those are just

[22:31] clouds

[22:32] they will come they will go they may

[22:34] stay a little longer than you want but

[22:36] you're actually the sky

[22:38] so another way to another phrase for

[22:41] this is I am love on the sky I am love

[22:44] and I got this

[22:46] so you approach the problem very

[22:48] differently you use that kind of Mayan

[22:50] poetry so you move into the conversation

[22:53] or your relationship with the heat the

[22:55] agitation and you're not yours past

[22:58] trying to solve this

[23:00] and you're not someone's opinion of you

[23:02] trying to solve the problem you are love

[23:05] solving the problem

[23:07] you think very differently you will

[23:10] speak very differently this works with

[23:13] my partner all the time

[23:16] you're gonna walk a walk the other day

[23:18] you know we just we're taking a time out

[23:21] and then we were going to reconvene at a

[23:23] sushi restaurant and I just you know I

[23:25] was just like I was just going through

[23:27] the list of how I'm gonna break it down

[23:28] All for Love and this is what's so

[23:30] tricky in this space right

[23:32] yeah all because you know we're going to

[23:34] be better more conscious couple here's

[23:37] my list

[23:38] and this is what love does

[23:41] and I just did my thing I was like

[23:44] Danielle you're this guy

[23:46] my list just evaporated

[23:51] and I showed and the argument was just a

[23:54] cloud and I showed up at the sushi sushi

[23:56] restaurant and I just like hey babe

[23:58] [Laughter]

[24:02] and that's how it works this love thing

[24:04] is that you know higher Consciousness is

[24:07] that practical you show up at the

[24:09] restaurant you're just like hey

[24:11] and it's also that efficient and lovely

[24:14] and and I feel like there's also such

[24:16] lovely sweet

[24:18] humor in it as well it's very

[24:22] um unexpected and light and fun when you

[24:28] really start to play in that space I'm

[24:29] going to read you something else you

[24:30] wrote this was in chapter 18. okay so

[24:33] all about Loving Thoughts your dad would

[24:35] say leave the room so you can change

[24:38] your mind

[24:39] um I loved that because again I've

[24:43] witnessed and watched myself almost like

[24:45] a little machine you know I can drill in

[24:47] in almost in a certain geographical

[24:50] place and then the thoughts the argument

[24:53] the feelings the emotion the perspective

[24:55] The Stance gets drilled in and I love to

[24:58] just like go to a different room walk

[25:00] outside how important have you seen it

[25:03] in your own practice

[25:05] to change your environment if you notice

[25:09] like oh it may be time to change these

[25:12] thoughts

[25:14] yeah the premise here is that you want

[25:16] to be choosing higher vibration more

[25:19] Loving Thoughts as much as you can and

[25:22] sometimes it's not easy to do you got to

[25:24] get out of the situation

[25:27] this is really tricky

[25:28] for women

[25:30] who who are on the personal development

[25:33] path because what I see happen a lot is

[25:36] we use our

[25:38] growth our spirituality

[25:42] as sort of this um

[25:46] uh it's like this prescription to put up

[25:49] with a lot of stuff sometimes and this

[25:51] isn't necessarily A

[25:53] about boundaries but it's like if I were

[25:56] spiritual I would stay I could I would

[25:58] put up with this if I were really in My

[26:00] Buddha nature I could transmute this

[26:03] situation it's like maybe all that's

[26:05] true but the philosophy of you got to

[26:08] take care of you and create conditions

[26:10] for healing for you means get some air

[26:13] take a break from the relationship leave

[26:16] what are the conditions that are going

[26:18] to help you

[26:20] regulate your nervous system

[26:23] breathe

[26:24] calm down

[26:26] and think with love and I say that

[26:29] because thinking clearly is often just

[26:32] more mind mind more strategy more how to

[26:35] but actually refer to your heart let

[26:39] your thoughts or your heart inform your

[26:41] thoughts

[26:43] so you might have to just peace out but

[26:47] you really you have to love yourself to

[26:48] be so you have to really be your own

[26:50] Champion to do that yeah and trust that

[26:53] little nudge I feel like my heart

[26:55] absolutely gives me nudges when it's

[26:57] like you know what

[26:59] room or you know

[27:01] go get some cash at the bank

[27:03] there's a there's a little thing you can

[27:05] go experience

[27:07] um you don't have to be suffering

[27:09] through it right that's the other thing

[27:11] and this is this is my experience it's

[27:13] like

[27:15] suffering for me was like this spiritual

[27:18] badge

[27:20] it's like I can endure I can put up what

[27:23] I can transform this with my patients

[27:26] those are truths patience transforms a

[27:29] situation but I don't have to put myself

[27:32] through this rigor

[27:34] to be more enlightened to be more loving

[27:36] to be more valuable I can actually

[27:38] choose easy I can choose rest yes yeah

[27:43] and then I'm more useful

[27:45] let's talk a little bit about the Nuance

[27:47] around choosing Loving Thoughts over

[27:49] fear-based thoughts because it's not the

[27:52] same as positive thinking and I loved

[27:55] that bit of of uh shading that you did

[27:58] in there positive thinking is uh you're

[28:02] jumping over any unspiritual feelings

[28:05] it's not spiritual being angry about

[28:07] this or to feel my rage or to be

[28:10] resentful so I'm just going to say

[28:12] everything happens for a reason and this

[28:13] is my karma

[28:15] and that makes me a better person that

[28:16] makes me more spiritual

[28:18] and what it actually does

[28:21] is it just

[28:23] it's really just Shadow on top of Shadow

[28:25] it's just pushing all those human

[28:27] natural emotions that are actually just

[28:30] showing up because they want your

[28:31] attention and you're just saying to them

[28:33] I'm not going to pay attention to you

[28:35] and you become

[28:37] more fragmented you get all these little

[28:40] scared parts of yourself even more

[28:42] scared and they make more scared little

[28:44] parts and they hang out in your basement

[28:47] and then one day you at the beach and

[28:51] why am I at the beach feeling anxious

[28:54] all those fragmented Parts come up

[28:56] through little fender bender or anxiety

[28:59] or panic attacks

[29:01] so stop stop trying to overcome your

[29:06] fear you created your fear

[29:08] it's your mind baby why would you reject

[29:11] what you created why would you leave it

[29:13] on the porch it just wants love it just

[29:16] it all all the stuff we're pushing away

[29:19] the neuroses and the rage it's just

[29:22] saying hi I'm an emotion I come from

[29:25] your unconscious self

[29:27] and I just want you to pay attention

[29:28] with me to me I just want you to be more

[29:31] conscious

[29:32] so do that and that is the difference

[29:34] between spiritual bypassing and being

[29:36] faux happy

[29:38] and being a

[29:40] spiritual grown-up

[29:42] I love that you wrote choosing Loving

[29:44] Thoughts isn't an act of denial it's an

[29:45] Act of Creation it requires skillful

[29:47] awareness I thought that was really good

[29:49] too I think this is the warriorship that

[29:53] we hear a lot about what it means to be

[29:54] and let you know love and light but this

[29:56] is really it because depending on how

[29:59] much work you've done or how much trauma

[30:01] you've experienced

[30:02] you're going to have

[30:05] x amount an infinite amount of negative

[30:08] thoughts a day

[30:10] divide and by negative I mean divisive

[30:13] thoughts thoughts that are saying you

[30:15] don't belong or you don't have what you

[30:17] need or we're all separate

[30:19] and every time that happens

[30:22] your job

[30:24] as a child of creation is to choose a

[30:27] higher vibration thought like the

[30:29] easiest way to understand it is to say

[30:31] choose a more positive thought or I

[30:33] would say choose a more loving thought

[30:35] it's a loving thought isn't necessarily

[30:38] you know happy and cheery right and what

[30:42] I see happen with people is

[30:46] it's a muscle to work

[30:48] there's this doubt that comes up really

[30:51] happens for women in their bodies you

[30:53] know

[30:53] and you can have all these negative

[30:56] thoughts about your your body your

[30:57] health your Wellness

[30:59] but you have to choose you counter that

[31:02] with a thought you actually believe

[31:05] so this is why I have a problem with

[31:07] affirmations I feel like new age

[31:09] affirmations would teach us like you

[31:11] just stand in the mirror and say I am

[31:14] healthy and beautiful

[31:16] but if you don't believe that you're

[31:17] healthy and beautiful oh yeah

[31:19] it's toxic you're lying with yourself

[31:21] right but you can can you choose a

[31:24] loving thought that you believe

[31:26] such as I'm gonna make this up right now

[31:28] you stand in the mirror or you walk down

[31:31] the street whatever it is and you say

[31:34] um my body has never let me down

[31:37] that's it or maybe you maybe you don't

[31:39] even believe that because you've been in

[31:40] a struggle with your body your whole

[31:42] life you could say

[31:44] um

[31:45] people heal all the time

[31:47] and then the next day I think the

[31:50] thought gets a little closer to yourself

[31:51] but you're gonna have to do this 900

[31:53] times a day until you get this new

[31:57] neural pathway of I'm choosing the

[31:59] loving thought

[32:01] um

[32:02] let's talk about ego you're right it's

[32:05] not so much that we have an ego it's

[32:08] that we ego our way through life when we

[32:12] could be loving we're egoing I really

[32:14] like this idea of ego as a verb that is

[32:18] very very accurate

[32:21] this is why this works for me

[32:24] I you know having done all the workshops

[32:26] I used to think that this ego was this

[32:30] terrible part of myself that I was

[32:32] ashamed of you know for me ego's like

[32:35] arrogance and grandiosity for other

[32:38] people their ego is

[32:40] insecurity and you know big story around

[32:43] lack of self-worth because so it can

[32:44] show up as bravado or you know

[32:46] Brokenness

[32:47] but for me oh my gosh it was just like

[32:50] so ashamed when I would thought I had

[32:53] like something egotrippy happened that

[32:55] day and then I would be in combat with

[32:58] my ego like how do I suppress it how do

[33:01] I get over it how do I shut her up so I

[33:04] don't do that again because I want to be

[33:06] loving I want to you know be of service

[33:08] and then

[33:10] she it would just kind of get a little

[33:13] louder a little more cocky and I was

[33:16] like oh

[33:18] the ego belongs to me it's from me it's

[33:21] my creation it lives in my head I'm

[33:23] feeding it all the time why would I push

[33:26] it what if I just had a friendly your

[33:28] relationship with my ego

[33:30] and so I think when we move into this

[33:33] idea that

[33:34] ego is a behavior it's not this thing

[33:37] it's not this entity

[33:40] then we can just say oh I was I was

[33:42] egoing

[33:44] that's it it's kind of like oh I was I

[33:47] was overeating oh I was gossiping yeah I

[33:52] was rushing through my day like oh I was

[33:54] I was doing that oh okay yeah

[33:57] Being Human yeah and then the ego gets

[34:00] less uh hostile it chills out

[34:04] and it starts to get integrated it

[34:06] starts to dissolve yeah and really when

[34:09] we're saying I was egoing or rushing or

[34:11] whatever what we're really saying is oh

[34:13] I just forgot that I am love I just

[34:16] forgot who I was just momentarily while

[34:19] I was doing that oh now I remember I am

[34:21] loving

[34:26] there's one thing that I want to wrap up

[34:27] on before I just want to open it up for

[34:29] you with the most important things that

[34:30] you want to make sure that people know

[34:31] about this book which by the way for

[34:33] anyone you have got to get your hands on

[34:35] this if you've loved this conversation I

[34:37] I could not more highly recommend this

[34:39] book uh but this was a fun one

[34:40] especially for the possibility of uh

[34:43] just teasing people to watch this

[34:45] episode to share it so you have this

[34:47] great bit about a shortcut to instant

[34:50] compassion one easy sentence that's a

[34:53] shortcut to to instant compassion you

[34:56] can say it or I can say whatever you

[34:58] prefer

[34:59] you say it so we make sure we get it

[35:01] right I know what it is and you know

[35:02] what this morning I was thinking for

[35:04] Leo's gonna love that oh and look yeah

[35:07] of course so here you go folks Danielle

[35:10] Laporte wrote this one simple easy

[35:12] sentence oh I've done that before

[35:17] that's the revolution yeah when someone

[35:20] is

[35:22] aggressive when someone is greedy when

[35:24] someone is needy and you're just like oh

[35:28] I don't want that I don't like that you

[35:29] are so unevolved you know what you're

[35:31] going to say you're gonna say oh I've

[35:32] done that before

[35:33] maybe you did it 20 years ago because

[35:35] you really have grown and you really are

[35:37] much more evolved in Leighton maybe you

[35:40] did it yesterday but you just it's

[35:42] immediate common ground

[35:45] you relax your judgment has nothing to

[35:49] latch on to oh

[35:51] I've done that before

[35:53] I just thought it was so brilliant

[35:55] because it's so true for like a vast

[35:59] majority of things right for the vast

[36:01] majority of kind of everyday

[36:04] tweaks that we can experience from each

[36:07] other uh when you kind of root

[36:09] underneath it whether it's a disrespect

[36:11] someone was mean to you someone gave you

[36:14] a dirt you know whatever the thing could

[36:15] be it's like oh I've done that before

[36:17] someone was inconsiderate someone wasn't

[36:19] thinking about your feelings so whatever

[36:21] it oh I've done that before

[36:24] yeah really really good so Dee anything

[36:28] um that we haven't touched on that you

[36:30] feel in your heart you're like but Marie

[36:32] I gotta say this to the people

[36:36] I gotta say this to the people

[36:40] well the response to how to be loving is

[36:44] I thought this was going to be a book

[36:45] about relationships and how to be nice

[36:48] to other people and this is really about

[36:50] self-acceptance

[36:52] and that is what it is about it's about

[36:56] more than just tolerating all that stuff

[36:58] you're pushing away it's about actually

[37:00] having reverence for it because it's

[37:02] expanding you all the stuff you're

[37:04] pushing away when you bring it in

[37:06] actually

[37:07] has you be more loving

[37:10] and when that happens

[37:12] I I think the dawning comes like wow the

[37:16] most solid contribution I can make to a

[37:19] hurting world is to heal myself it's not

[37:23] selfish it actually affects all of us

[37:27] yeah

[37:28] beautiful I adore you my friend

[37:31] congratulations on yet another gorgeous

[37:34] impactful and healing piece of work and

[37:36] thank you for making the time to be on

[37:38] today ah thank you Marie love love love

[37:40] love

[37:41] now before you go if you want to go even

[37:44] deeper into the topic of self-love you

[37:46] need to watch my episode with Mr Tim

[37:48] Ferriss click over here and watch it now

[37:51] try to invest in the skills and learning

[37:54] the principles that are more Timeless

[37:56] because then you are infinitely

[37:58] adaptable

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

The Desire Map asks 'How do I want to feel?' and teaches you to make decisions based on core desired feelings. *How to Be Loving* asks 'What do I want to embody?' — shifting focus from chasing feelings to practicing a consistent way of being, especially during difficult times when you won't feel the way you want to.
According to Danielle, forced positive thinking that ignores genuine pain does more harm than good — it creates shame by forcing a split between what you're experiencing and what you're supposed to believe. True transformation comes from choosing a way of being (like loving or compassionate) regardless of your emotional state.
The practice isn't about generating a feeling — it's about choosing an action or perspective aligned with love. One immediate tool: when someone is difficult or needy, pause and think 'This is a human being who is suffering.' That sentence creates compassion and shifts how you respond, regardless of your mood.
Danielle's insight is that fulfillment isn't about arranging your life to generate consistent happiness — it's about developing mastery in how you show up regardless of circumstances. The practice is learning to be steady, compassionate, and present even when life isn't cooperating with your plan.
Yes — and paradoxically, it often helps. Danielle discovered during her own dark night that being useful and compassionate to others, even while suffering, actually created connection and meaning. Fulfillment came not from solving her pain, but from being loving in the middle of it.
It means accessing a different intelligence than your protective, fear-based mind. When you're in conflict or stress, your brain defaults to fight responses. Thinking from your heart means asking 'What's the gentle choice here?' — not to deny the difficulty, but to access a wisdom that doesn't run through fear first.
Ambitious, self-aware people who've optimized their lives and still feel something's missing — particularly ambitious women who secretly long for permission to stop performing and to be loved as they are, not as they produce.
