Free Awareness: The Teenage Seeker Who Gave Up Seeking

Bentinho Massaro
Bentinho Massaro

Somewhere in the first few minutes of a fifty-four-minute conversation recorded for Conscious TV, the host Renate McNay leans into the obvious question: how does a person wake up at sixteen, when most of his peers are busy with other dreams? The guest, Bentinho Massaro, was then twenty-three and already being described as one of the youngest non-duality teachers on the circuit. His answer is not a conversion story. It is a story about a teenager who tried the tools, found them hollow, and slowly learned to trust something he had never needed to build. That arc, from technique to simple presence, is the spine of the interview, and it is a useful map for anyone who has ever felt that enlightenment was a place they had to drive to.

Where did the seeking begin, and what was the spark he lost?

Massaro's account begins in childhood, with a feeling he could not yet name. He described a joy that did not depend on anything, a sense that "anything being possible" that left him with a natural confidence. He was aware of it only in a loose way, not in the precise language he uses now. Then, around twelve or thirteen, the confidence began to thin. By fifteen he noticed the loss clearly. "I lost that spark, that joy," he told McNay, and what followed was a determination to get it back. The reason he gave is the one that drives most serious seekers: the recovered state felt "much more authentic than the way I was acting," and the insecurities of high school felt like a costume.

This is worth sitting with, because it reframes the usual picture of the young spiritual seeker as an escapist. Massaro was not running from life. He was trying to return to something he already had, which is a different and more demanding project.

Why did telekinesis fail him?

Before he found the teachings that would hold him, Massaro tried the flashy route. At around fifteen or sixteen he practiced telekinesis, moving objects without touching them, for roughly half a year. He was clear that it gave him a sense that "there's something more than high school," and for a while that was enough. But after five or six months he reached a verdict that became a turning point. Even if he got better at it, he said, "it's just a funny trick, that's all." He did not bend spoons, he noted, and he could see that the practice was not getting him, or anyone, anywhere.

The lesson in that short detour is one that applies well beyond teenage experiments. Powers and techniques can be impressive and still leave the practitioner exactly where he started. Massaro's question had shifted from "what can I do?" to something deeper.

What was the pull toward the "source of life"?

His reasoning at the time was almost mathematical, and it is charming for that reason. If he could know the source of life, he figured, he would then understand everything else "in its proper context." He described an "instinctual pull" toward that source, and it led him to books, including the yoga sutras of Patanjali, which he came to through the writings he encountered. He then trained for three years on a yoga and meditation teachers' course. The training was not what he expected, and the discrepancy is where the interview gets interesting.

Massaro noticed he was more at ease, more peaceful and more joyful outside the meditation hall than on the cushion. Sitting down to follow his energy, do breathing exercises or meditate on states of mind felt, in his words, "so far-fetched" and "so contrived." What he found instead was a consistent thread running through every state. Whatever he experienced, the one having the experience was the same. He put it bluntly: "no matter what I experience it's always going to be me and me." The sense of changelessness, he says, "became felt, became visceral." It did not arrive as a dramatic break. It was, he said, "more of a subtle realization," but profound enough to unsettle him.

Why did he stop trusting the teachers?

This is the part of the story where most readers will recognize themselves. Between sixteen and eighteen, Massaro was caught between his own instinct and the confident instructions of teachers with decades of experience. Should he believe the people who promised that a certain state could be reached through purification and a long list of practices? Or should he trust the knowing he had found in himself? He describes going back and forth for a couple of years, a painful stretch in which, as he framed it, "the conflict between my confidence and my insecurity" played out, and insecurity kept looking outward for someone who knew better.

The resolution came on the road. He travelled through India for about five and a half months, met swamis and other meditation teachers, and broke off the course. His objection was not that the systems were bad. It was that he "couldn't believe in yet another system, another philosophy, another theoretical 'you have to do this, you have to do that,' because then you become something." The core of his argument is blunt and worth quoting in full: the sense that life is not thinking in terms of states of mind and purification, and that "we are superimposing all of that philosophical structure." Once he saw the superimposition, he says, he gave up believing what the teachers and books were telling him and began to "relax into my own natural presence."

"I started to relax into my own natural presence."

Bentinho Massaro, in a 2011 Conscious TV interview with Renate McNay

Does awareness need company to be real?

McNay raises a fair point. Massaro was, by any measure, unusually young to be speaking about freedom and awareness, and she asked whether he had peers who shared this natural ease. His answer was candid: not really. He did not seem bothered. The realization, he said, "is its own fulfillment, really. It's its own self-satisfaction." He acknowledged a practical, human side, a persistent sense of being misperceived or not fully understood, but he felt no real need to be understood in return. He recalled, with some humor, a period when he treated the Buddha as a kind of imaginary friend, a companion in the sense that nothing else could satisfy him in quite the same way.

For a reader, this is a useful distinction. Loneliness and solitude are different experiences, and Massaro's claim is that the sense of "I exist" carries its own completeness, even when the outer world does not mirror it back.

What does practice look like once the techniques are gone?

The most concrete thread in the interview is the shift from effort to attention. Massaro describes an assimilation period, a gradual letting go of the structures he had absorbed and the reacquisition of a conviction that was no longer shaken by insecurity. That conviction, in his telling, rests on a single observation: that one exists. "That I exist, that's really my only focus," he says, "simply noticing the existence." The practice is not about reaching a higher state, but about noticing the plain fact of being present with whatever arises.

The same note runs through his description of emotion. Rather than treating feelings as separate from the one who feels them, he points toward noticing where an emotion begins and where it goes, and staying with the awareness that holds it. What changes is not the weather of experience but the relationship to it. He admits this is subtle, and that doubt often arises for people who hear the message and then start looking for a method to do it right. His implicit answer is the simplest one available: stop doing the homework, and simply relax.

The interview also gestures at the description's own summary, which frames the whole teaching in a single sentence: unity is already the case, and separation appears only through the eyes of interpreting. The practice, in other words, is to drop the role of interpreter of one's own life and be at one with experience as it is and as it feels. It is less a doctrine to master than a quiet recognition to live into.

Why this story still matters

What makes Massaro's account compelling is not that he claims a dramatic awakening. It is that he is so precise about the journey away from the dramatic. A teenager tries telekinesis, decides it is a trick, chases the source of life through texts and courses, sees the structure he has been stacking on top of his own awareness, and walks away from it. The movement is from doing to being, from borrowed frameworks to a knowing that required no permission. Whether or not a reader accepts his conclusions, the arc itself is one of the clearest accounts of the non-dual path from a young voice.

Where to go from here

If this interview resonated, the best next step is to watch the full conversation rather than rely on any summary, including this one. The opening movement is where the origin story lives, and it is worth hearing his own cadence and hesitations. Then try the simplest experiment he describes: pause, notice that you exist, and see what happens when you stop adding a method on top. Keep the tone light. Massaro's own advice, in the spirit of the talk, is not to turn awareness into homework.

[0:11] hello and welcome to conscious TV my

[0:14] name is Renata MCN and my guest today is

[0:18] pentino masaro hello

[0:21] pentino um I know several of you are

[0:24] already eagerly awaiting this interview

[0:27] and we are very happy that he is with us

[0:31] today so um you let's start with your

[0:36] seeking

[0:38] history um there's always a good start

[0:40] and people are very curious how come

[0:43] yeah this person woke up uh and I know

[0:46] it started really early when you were

[0:49] 16 which is unusual because normally

[0:52] with 16 you have other dreams and hopes

[0:56] and your mind is somewhere else not with

[0:59] enlightenment so what happened

[1:06] um I always felt like uh I had this this

[1:10] kind of spark This Joy this Costless

[1:12] kind of Happiness about me as a kid uh I

[1:16] guess all kids

[1:18] do and somewhere throughout High School

[1:21] I think around the age of 12 13 I

[1:26] started to lose that kind of that that

[1:28] confidence that natural confidence

[1:31] so is the when you said you had this

[1:35] spark yeah uh is this something you

[1:39] actually already as a child were aware

[1:42] of that you were different than others

[1:44] or were people telling you you just

[1:47] radiate how how did you know it how did

[1:51] you have the not necessarily different

[1:53] but more like U just this this God sense

[1:56] of anything being possible this this

[1:59] mysterious sense of

[2:02] which just filled me with with joy and a

[2:05] sense of I don't know indestructibility

[2:08] maybe right so that gave me a natural

[2:11] confidence a natural kind of joy and I

[2:14] guess I was aware of it not in these

[2:16] terms not in these words not as

[2:18] consciously as I would describe it now

[2:21] yeah um so then I kind of lost that

[2:24] somewhere through throughout High School

[2:27] where I was just trying to fit in trying

[2:31] to you know you get a lot of critique

[2:32] you got a lot of uh a lot of insecurity

[2:36] starts to arise yeah and I think I was

[2:40] like 15 when I started to really notice

[2:43] this I became aware of the fact that I

[2:45] lost something I lost that spark that

[2:48] Joy that's interesting yeah and

[2:54] uh that's when I really started

[2:57] to started to seek for

[3:01] to get that back I was determined to get

[3:03] that back because it that felt much more

[3:05] authentic than the way I was acting to

[3:08] be and the way I was feeling the

[3:10] insecurities so what what was it

[3:13] actually you felt you

[3:15] lost um how did it feel that natural

[3:18] that natural

[3:20] Joy so joy happiness yeah yeah

[3:27] MH um and I started see speaking

[3:31] through uh well where to start I started

[3:35] practicing

[3:36] telekinesis or

[3:38] telekinesis which is like moving objects

[3:42] without touching them somehow I came to

[3:44] that I don't know how or why anymore but

[3:47] I think it was 15 16 so I was practicing

[3:50] that for about half a year and that gave

[3:52] me again this sense of you know there's

[3:56] something more than high school there's

[3:59] something more than

[4:02] uh than what we are familiar with and

[4:07] after about 5 six months of practicing

[4:09] that I just figured this is this is

[4:12] useless you know even if I get better at

[4:14] it uh it's just a a funny trick that's

[4:18] all and that's did you also bend

[4:21] spoons no I didn't I didn't bend spoons

[4:26] okay

[4:28] um and some I realized this uh this

[4:32] ain't getting me anywhere this ain't

[4:34] getting anybody anywhere and that's when

[4:36] I started to feel the way I termed it at

[4:39] the time was if I know the source of

[4:42] Life yeah then I will know I will kind

[4:44] of Master all that's aspects uh master

[4:48] in the sense that I will know everything

[4:50] else in its proper context if I first

[4:53] know the source of life so I had this

[4:55] this instinctual kind

[4:58] of uh pull towards knowing the source of

[5:02] life that's how I described it at the

[5:06] time and somehow I encountered a couple

[5:09] of books

[5:11] uh The Familiar ones like EA and

[5:15] uh and I came across the yoga sutras of

[5:19] bangali yeah um and I became real

[5:22] interested in that took a yoga

[5:24] meditation teachers course for three

[5:27] years uh that wasn't really what I

[5:30] expected it to be why I no I noticed

[5:34] that I was much more at ease much more

[5:37] peaceful much more joyous outside of the

[5:40] meditation Hall than when I was sitting

[5:42] on the cushion trying to trying to

[5:45] follow my energy or do breathing

[5:47] exercises or meditate on states of mind

[5:51] it just felt so far-fetched to me it

[5:53] felt so unnatural so contrived to to

[5:56] meditate on something or to to reach

[5:58] something in meditation like a state of

[6:00] of mine because I figured I felt more

[6:04] it's not a figuring out but it's like a

[6:06] i this realization that no matter what

[6:08] state of mind I'm in at the end of the

[6:11] day I always take myself back to bed

[6:14] kind of the sense of no matter what I

[6:16] experience it's always going to be me

[6:18] and me so sort of like a changelessness

[6:22] became self-evident right throughout all

[6:24] these practices it's an interesting

[6:26] statement I take myself back to bed yeah

[6:30] no matter what you've

[6:32] experienced

[6:33] yeah you always end up at the same place

[6:37] yes that's right so you always you're

[6:40] always you that's what I noticed whether

[6:42] I'm meditating or not where I'm in a

[6:44] special state of mind or I'm depressed

[6:47] or I'm chaotic I'm still me so this

[6:51] fundamental

[6:52] changelessness became felt became

[6:54] viseral but it's incredibly incredibly

[6:58] profound thing to find out that there's

[7:02] something always there

[7:05] yeah and how how was this Revelation for

[7:09] you um it came very natural so it wasn't

[7:13] so much like a a big bang kind of thing

[7:16] like this changes my life orever was

[7:18] more of a subtle realization but

[7:20] profound enough for me to get real

[7:22] confused between my own Instinct and

[7:25] what all the teachers were telling me

[7:27] like the yoga meditation teachers

[7:31] um so I felt this constant confusion

[7:35] between should I believe you know I was

[7:36] 16 17 18 years old should I believe what

[7:41] those teachers with 30 years of

[7:42] experience are telling me about having

[7:45] to reach a certain kind of state through

[7:46] all kinds of meditation and purification

[7:49] and doing this and doing that or shall I

[7:52] trust my own

[7:55] Instinct and I went back and forth with

[7:57] that for a couple of years right and

[8:00] that was really painful period because

[8:02] of that insecurity it was the conflict

[8:04] between my confidence and my insecurity

[8:07] and my insecurity of course looks out to

[8:09] other teachers and other

[8:11] people uh that insecurity likes to

[8:13] project that people know better than

[8:16] what my instincts are telling me and

[8:19] so for a while it went like

[8:22] that and somewhere in India I went to

[8:25] India I broke off the the yoga

[8:27] meditation teachers course

[8:30] and I traveled through India for about

[8:32] five and a half

[8:34] months and met some swamis there as well

[8:38] meditation teachers and I just

[8:41] felt that I couldn't do it anymore I

[8:43] couldn't believe in yet another system

[8:46] another philosophy another theoretical

[8:48] you have to do this you have to do that

[8:50] because then you become something it

[8:52] just felt so

[8:54] unnatural so when I really realized

[8:56] that this just this is unnatural life is

[8:59] isn't telling us that life isn't

[9:01] thinking in terms of states of mind and

[9:04] purification we are superimposing all of

[9:06] that all of that philosophical

[9:08] structure when I realized that I kind of

[9:11] gave up believing in what the teachers

[9:13] were telling me and the books were

[9:14] telling me and I started to

[9:16] relax I started to relax into my

[9:21] own natural presence so but did you kind

[9:25] of feel alone with this experience I

[9:28] mean you are probably the youngest

[9:30] person

[9:31] who I mean certainly the youngest person

[9:35] speaking on freedom or Awareness on

[9:38] conscious TV but were there other people

[9:41] in your age in these groups and uh you

[9:44] could communicate with who had this kind

[9:47] of

[9:49] naturalness reaching um this

[9:54] understanding not really no

[9:57] no no

[10:00] so how did you feel about that um

[10:04] realization and

[10:08] um

[10:12] um it took a while to let go of all the

[10:15] structures I've been thought yeah

[10:18] um so it was a period of assimilation of

[10:22] really really acquiring that that

[10:25] conviction again that lack of insecurity

[10:28] I guess H where I'm just totally relaxed

[10:32] into this knowing that I I exist you

[10:36] could

[10:37] say

[10:41] um and I wasn't really bothered about it

[10:44] being lonely or not because that it's

[10:46] its own fulfillment really it's its own

[10:49] self-satisfaction

[10:51] um so I didn't really mind that nobody

[10:53] else was reflecting in of course in a

[10:55] practical way and in a in a very human

[10:59] relation

[11:00] way there's always been this sense

[11:04] of um misperception happening like not

[11:08] being understood or but no need no real

[11:12] need to be

[11:14] understood I felt like uh I remember for

[11:16] a period I felt like the Buddha was my

[11:18] body my buddy I mean like whenever I

[11:22] read something of the Buddha just felt

[11:24] like he understands me kind of that was

[11:28] U that was a sense I had

[11:30] which is just like an imaginary friend

[11:33] almost but was lovely just like I know

[11:36] some something or somebody knows what

[11:39] I'm experiencing this is not um this is

[11:42] not alien this is not new this is not

[11:46] strange and it just took a little time

[11:49] to become real confident in this and

[11:51] then the more confident you become the

[11:52] more people you meet to reflect that um

[11:56] andless it's interesting that you say

[11:59] this

[12:00] sentence you realize that you

[12:05] exist I I didn't hear it in that form

[12:08] before you nor normally people would say

[12:11] I realized I'm Consciousness or I

[12:13] realized I'm I'm awake but I realize I

[12:17] exist yeah isn't that beautiful it is we

[12:21] miss it all the time yeah without it

[12:23] nothing else could be yeah it's I get

[12:26] this sense of a groundedness of of real

[12:30] being here yeah present I exist MH yeah

[12:36] it's the prerequisite for anything else

[12:39] and yet it's never been mentioned in

[12:40] school it's never been mentioned by

[12:42] teachers or parents all that's mentioned

[12:45] all that's emphasized is what is this

[12:48] what is that what label can I come up

[12:50] for with uh my emotions what is this how

[12:54] can I feel better so we're constantly

[12:57] focused on every single form of our

[12:59] perception yeah but more fundamental to

[13:02] all these forms is the very fact that we

[13:05] perceive the very fact that we exist the

[13:09] very fact that we are even aware to have

[13:13] problems or to think to believe we have

[13:15] problems so whenever I believe I have a

[13:18] I have a

[13:20] problem what's really going on is it

[13:22] kind of like a a

[13:24] disrespect to my existential nature to

[13:27] the miracle of being alive if I worry

[13:30] about something I already acquire the

[13:32] arrogance to believe that I know better

[13:35] what I should experience than life

[13:37] itself and I totally disregard I totally

[13:40] miss the opportunity that's here to

[13:43] recognize the very fact that I exist

[13:47] that existence

[13:48] is so instead of focusing that's that's

[13:51] kind of the shift that's all Awakening

[13:53] is going from focusing on

[13:55] form and form is totally fine but from

[13:58] going from that mind set which is

[14:00] totally appointing everything constantly

[14:02] where this came from who you are what

[14:05] your name is what my name is and we

[14:07] totally miss that pervasive presence

[14:12] that pervasive existence which is the

[14:15] very fact that we exist and everybody

[14:17] can notice for themselves the fact that

[14:20] they exist you can just stop and stop

[14:23] thinking about everything for a moment

[14:25] and simply realize simply stop to

[14:28] acknowledge deeply

[14:32] the very fact that I

[14:36] exist I I do something similar and I

[14:39] know Raman mahashi

[14:42] um um talked about it or a lot of no

[14:47] several of these uh spiritual people or

[14:51] Masters they said the only thing you

[14:54] have to do is be aware that you are

[14:59] aware yeah M it's similar to be aware

[15:03] that you exist but then you you say in

[15:06] your in your book uh it is not always

[15:11] necessary to be

[15:13] aware mhm I I I think that's how you

[15:16] said it do you remember

[15:19] probably but it's it's equally enjoyable

[15:23] yeah to enjoy unconsciousness it's not

[15:26] always about recognizing awareness all

[15:29] the time yeah that can become uh another

[15:33] idea to recognize awareness all the time

[15:36] that becomes the concept right so then

[15:39] suddenly out of that same sense of

[15:41] insecurity and inadequacy that

[15:45] um that feeling of imperfection out of

[15:49] that we come up with the idea that we

[15:52] need to be perfect all the time we need

[15:53] to be aware all the

[15:56] time we need to be in a state of mind

[15:58] that's always permanently aware as if

[16:01] that's not already the case and we don't

[16:04] have to have any thoughts

[16:06] yeah yeah that's that's taboo right

[16:09] having thoughts

[16:11] yeah so it's not about beating yourself

[16:13] up about anything and that's where the

[16:16] joy arises that's where that Costless

[16:18] Timeless Freedom shines through

[16:20] naturally because that's all there ever

[16:23] is

[16:24] anyway so it's not about we becoming

[16:27] somebody who is always aware of a way

[16:30] awareness it's about relaxing all these

[16:34] ideas for 2 to 5 seconds again and

[16:39] again where we simply surrender all

[16:42] Focus we don't focus on anything for 2

[16:44] to 5

[16:45] seconds it's like a hands

[16:50] off and we notice naturally we notice

[16:52] that we

[16:55] exist you can't escape it if you don't

[16:57] focus on anything

[17:00] you notice you are still here so

[17:02] awareness naturally recognizes itself

[17:06] when we stop believing in things for a

[17:08] moment and then it's not about never

[17:11] believing in anything

[17:13] anymore what just naturally happens is

[17:15] that we relax more into this simply

[17:19] knowing that we are and we acquire a

[17:22] conviction that enables us to not worry

[17:26] about things

[17:28] anymore and it enables us to see through

[17:31] through all these separate distinctions

[17:33] that we make about everything so this

[17:36] natural ease of being which you could

[17:38] say is essentially non-referential it

[17:41] doesn't point to anything it simply is

[17:44] right we simply

[17:48] exist this natural ease that comes from

[17:51] that this natural joy that natural spark

[17:53] it's totally natural that shows that

[17:57] teaches itself that teaches is the way

[18:00] that shows the way and that reveals ever

[18:03] more how

[18:05] to how to live life there's no how to

[18:08] live life first and foremost but it

[18:11] simply shows you how to live a

[18:13] beneficial free happy

[18:15] life um you know I it just reminds me um

[18:21] yesterday I downloaded on my iPhone a

[18:24] little chime which reminds me exactly on

[18:27] that every half an hour

[18:30] every half an hour this chime comes and

[18:33] then this one two minute I just

[18:37] stop

[18:39] yeah but you know there are people out

[18:43] there who have it really difficult

[18:46] mhm and are completely in meshed into

[18:50] their problems what do you do with

[18:53] them how do you make them stop how do

[18:56] you make them realize who they are M

[19:00] where can they

[19:07] start well first of all there has to be

[19:09] the opportunity that naturally arises

[19:11] right so it's not about going out there

[19:14] and beating everybody on the head with a

[19:16] teaching um but if such an opportunity

[19:20] does seem to naturally arise where

[19:22] there's somebody is really caught up in

[19:24] this in this in this mindset of life is

[19:27] very very difficult for me at this time

[19:30] time um all I could do is offer very

[19:34] simple advice very simple direct

[19:38] instruction which would be for example

[19:40] like I just did just stop worrying about

[19:44] your situation stop focusing on your

[19:47] situation for two to 5

[19:52] Seconds okay and for those two to 5

[19:57] Seconds naturally they be PR themselves

[20:00] with that fundamental essential being

[20:04] here which is again a prerequisite for

[20:07] having problems so problems are a

[20:09] confirmation of perfect being they are

[20:12] not an indication of unawareness they're

[20:15] not an indication of something being

[20:18] wrong the situation is as it is and even

[20:21] the stories we have about it simply

[20:23] confirm the fact that we're aware of

[20:25] them the fact that there is an existence

[20:28] for them to even be known and talked

[20:30] about so again and again we simply Point

[20:33] them back to this natural fundamental

[20:36] essential ease of being which they can

[20:40] taste everybody can do that yeah um okay

[20:45] so

[20:48] um what happened to your

[20:51] emotions what happens to my emotions

[20:54] what happened after you after you had

[20:57] this realization that you exist

[20:59] yeah so what happened to your

[21:03] emotions uh they intensify they

[21:06] intensify yeah they become like

[21:09] beautiful uh or horrible beautifully

[21:13] horrible

[21:19] uh like anger for it's like there's no

[21:22] inhibition so they're totally allowed

[21:24] because thease of being is is as

[21:27] everything it is here regardless of what

[21:30] appears when this is realized that the

[21:33] emotions don't appear as separate from

[21:35] awareness so there's not a witness an

[21:38] emotion there is simply life in the form

[21:42] of being self-aware of its emotions

[21:45] there's life living itself feeling

[21:48] itself and knowing itself at the same

[21:50] time and you cannot find any emotion to

[21:53] exist apart from being here you can't

[21:56] find any emotion to exist apart from

[21:58] awareness

[21:59] so what you realize is that there's

[22:01] nothing wrong with emotions inherently

[22:03] first and foremost you realize that in

[22:06] the midst of

[22:08] emotions you can let them be completely

[22:12] you can let them rage and what can

[22:14] happen is that they actually reach a

[22:16] boiling point they reach because you're

[22:18] not uh inhibiting them you're not trying

[22:21] to avoid them you're fully experiencing

[22:24] your own restfulness in the midst of an

[22:26] intense emotion you're relaxing ing into

[22:29] the experience not away from so as you

[22:33] relax into these emotions what seems to

[22:36] happen

[22:38] is um and this kind of depends on the

[22:41] degree of surrender to it really if you

[22:44] totally surrender to the emotion it's

[22:45] just a beautiful form of

[22:48] bliss it's just

[22:51] magnificent

[22:53] um and in my experience emotions don't

[22:57] necessarily increase I I would say they

[22:59] tented decrease after a while in how

[23:03] often they arise meaning emotions like

[23:06] you know the little things worrying

[23:07] about stuff but emotion is such a

[23:10] beautiful energy it's such a powerful

[23:13] energy and it is totally infused with

[23:17] with this wise being this naturalness

[23:20] and so when we stop inhibiting it when

[23:22] we stop avoiding it and we relax again

[23:24] and again nakedly fearlessly into our

[23:27] experiences into our emotions and we

[23:30] allow them to overwhelm us completely

[23:32] and we don't attach any stories to them

[23:34] we simply experience them

[23:38] fully what happens is we realize freedom

[23:41] in the

[23:43] emotion okay I can appreciate that go

[23:46] ahead

[23:48] um but from my own experience I

[23:54] know that uh a story is a attached to

[24:00] every cell in my

[24:03] body that sounds like one story which

[24:06] contains all these stories right and you

[24:09] know this story is

[24:11] living and sometimes living so fast you

[24:15] know when an emotion arises you normally

[24:18] go onto the

[24:20] surface of Life yeah and there is no

[24:24] time or there is no

[24:27] um no thought or anything which says

[24:31] stop just sit down and

[24:35] relax that's the difficult thing you

[24:39] know

[24:40] um these cell memories so that's why

[24:44] it's very important to realize that it's

[24:47] not about the

[24:49] stopping it's actually the stopping is

[24:52] just a technique the again and again the

[24:54] two to 5 Seconds of relaxing into

[24:56] everything a simply technique to allow

[25:01] everything

[25:03] including the not stopping it doesn't

[25:05] have to stop anymore we realize the the

[25:08] inseparability of emotions and

[25:11] freedom so an emotion doesn't mean

[25:14] anything anymore it doesn't mean that

[25:16] we're not free if I'm feeling like this

[25:18] if I'm feeling depressed that doesn't

[25:20] mean anything you see but you have to

[25:22] fast realize who you are before you a

[25:25] you have to have a reference point to be

[25:27] honest I have no idea who I am

[25:29] the reference point is just another

[25:32] exper it's just another reference point

[25:34] you said it very well so we all know

[25:37] reference points that's why I use the

[25:39] pointer relax because if you relax every

[25:41] bit of focus you cannot even say I am

[25:44] awareness or I am this or I am that as

[25:47] opposed to

[25:48] what there is only life living itself in

[25:52] this present form awareness has no form

[25:55] of its own as separate from this

[25:57] experience so you can't find it to be

[26:00] something or some state of

[26:02] mind uh that is then somehow awareness

[26:05] and then this emotion is not awareness

[26:08] that's

[26:08] impossible awareness has no form of its

[26:11] own you can't find it no so its only

[26:14] form is your present experience so if

[26:16] you are depressed and if there is tons

[26:18] of stories and if there is the sense of

[26:20] it being

[26:22] cellular then that is a perfect

[26:24] perception of awareness that is the

[26:26] perfect form awareness takes and the

[26:29] freedom is therefore not in changing the

[26:31] experience from chaos to no chaos it's

[26:34] in about fully blowing yourself wide

[26:37] open into the experience being not

[26:40] holding any reference point the moment I

[26:42] hold the reference point I am awareness

[26:44] then somehow I also have the Judgment

[26:47] that something else looks like if it

[26:50] looks differently then that is not

[26:52] awareness automatically if I'm awareness

[26:55] then there's something

[26:57] else if I if I'm not awareness if I

[27:00] don't know who I am yeah nothing if I

[27:02] simply relax All That Remains is natural

[27:06] living and we as Minds cannot say

[27:09] anything about it we can't superimpose

[27:12] anything and the

[27:14] superimpositions are inseparable from

[27:17] that

[27:18] awareness so it's not about getting rid

[27:20] of emotions it's about enjoying them

[27:24] fully well let's say somebody wakes up

[27:29] with the emotion being actually that

[27:31] happened to me this morning I woke up up

[27:34] and there was so much anger I hadn't a

[27:37] clue where that was coming from there

[27:39] was anger and with the anger there were

[27:43] some narrow and actually Darkness yeah

[27:48] so what do you do with

[27:51] that uh there wasn't an awareness you

[27:54] know I tried to move back and uh and get

[27:58] it if change my perspective it didn't

[28:01] work nothing worked of course it doesn't

[28:03] work that's just a mental game we play

[28:06] trying to be the witness please

[28:09] don't if you wake up angry enjoy being

[28:12] angry that's the freedom to no longer

[28:15] forgot that I I'm supposed to enjoy yes

[28:18] we forgot that we've never been taught

[28:19] that yeah that's right I'm angry doesn't

[28:22] mean

[28:24] anything so in your work continue um

[28:29] how do people respond to your

[28:33] teaching

[28:36] how can they actually

[28:38] integrate what you're

[28:41] teaching so far there it's been very

[28:45] well received yeah

[28:51] um and the the few people that I've been

[28:55] able to follow over a period of time

[28:59] they seem to integrate very

[29:03] quickly because you

[29:06] know just sitting here with you um for

[29:10] me you have such a fresh innocent young

[29:15] mind and to wasn't meant to be a

[29:20] compliment but my statement that I think

[29:25] somebody who is like 40 60 who had lived

[29:31] most of their life who had had so much

[29:35] to digest with their cell memories and

[29:38] but there was so much

[29:39] suffering that's a huge

[29:43] chump it's almost

[29:46] impossible you know it looks

[29:50] impossible from what

[29:53] perspective well from their in mesurment

[29:57] in life which is fine it's not an

[30:02] obstacle for for this teaching if the

[30:06] teaching would be there is a state of

[30:08] perfection and you need to purify

[30:09] yourself in order to be that Perfection

[30:12] then that would be an obstacle but

[30:14] that's not the teaching the teaching is

[30:17] everything about you is essentially

[30:19] perfect it's intrinsically perfect

[30:22] intrinsically perfect how to go about

[30:25] and realize that consistently Moment by

[30:27] moment to the degree

[30:30] where this natural conviction is present

[30:34] and then when there's this conviction

[30:35] like you said like a

[30:37] mountain doubts come and go emotions

[30:40] come and go but you're not buying into

[30:42] any of them doubts come insecurities

[30:45] come and then it's like it's just

[30:50] funny it's just funny and everybody can

[30:53] do this and that's my strong belief

[30:58] that's my strong conviction anybody can

[31:00] do this I don't care how much cellular

[31:02] memory you have because it doesn't

[31:04] matter in this

[31:06] teaching it doesn't matter because it's

[31:08] totally Irrelevant in that sense that

[31:12] every story no matter how Intense or how

[31:15] calm is essentially perfect every

[31:18] reflection in the mirror no matter if

[31:20] it's a horrible reflection like a

[31:22] werewolf or uh a baby is reflected in

[31:25] the mirror both perceptions both ref

[31:28] Reflections are equally

[31:30] mirror as long as we keep focusing on

[31:32] the description of the baby versus the

[31:36] werewolf then we're lost and there so

[31:38] many obstacles we need to get rid of the

[31:40] werewolf we need to protect the

[31:42] baby if however we relax all that

[31:45] describing that defining this is this

[31:48] this is that I am over here I need to

[31:51] get over there I need to pass through

[31:52] this to this I need to do that in order

[31:55] to do it if we just relax all these

[31:59] crazy silly stories so how do you live

[32:02] we recognize the mirror yeah and both

[32:05] the baby as well as the reflection of

[32:07] the werewolf are equally appearing in

[32:10] and as the mirror so we realize the

[32:13] water in the wave we don't try to calm

[32:16] the waves down in order to get to the

[32:18] ocean we recognize the water immediately

[32:21] no matter if the wave is horrible or

[32:24] calm whether you have a lot of emotions

[32:26] or you're meditating peacefully I don't

[32:29] care it doesn't make a single difference

[32:32] not a single difference to who you are

[32:35] you can relax equally into both of these

[32:37] states of

[32:38] Mind how do you do a job and live your

[32:42] life like anybody

[32:46] else

[32:54] yet why you told me life lives itself

[32:57] right

[33:00] yeah uh spontaneous

[33:03] free and

[33:07] um powerful like a yes the energy is

[33:10] like a yes H sure yes it's like an

[33:14] Embrace and whatever comes your way

[33:16] because you have this

[33:18] conviction uh through repeated

[33:21] recognition of the fact that you always

[33:23] exist anyway throughout everything as it

[33:26] is

[33:28] because there is this natural conviction

[33:30] that

[33:31] arises everything that comes your way is

[33:33] no longer seen as an obstacle coming

[33:35] your way that you need to protect it's

[33:36] more like a you're open you're not

[33:38] holding on to one standpoint that's then

[33:41] uh that can then be harmed by other

[33:44] experiences because you relax that

[33:46] standpoint and you realize in your total

[33:48] vulnerability that you are completely

[33:51] safe and indestructible so let's say you

[33:54] have sorry to interrupt let's say you

[33:57] have a terminal illness or or you have

[34:01] difficulties in your

[34:05] relationship and you really

[34:07] struggle

[34:13] yes yes

[34:17] yes what do you

[34:20] do you struggle you struggl

[34:25] yes and you relax into the struggle into

[34:28] the experience that you label

[34:31] struggle you relax your descriptions and

[34:34] you relax into the experience as it

[34:38] is you don't have the arrogance to know

[34:41] what you should be experiencing you

[34:42] relax that you're innocent like a baby

[34:46] vulnerable totally

[34:48] vulnerable and then

[34:51] struggle the gastal changes the

[34:54] perspective it it's no longer a thing

[34:57] that's threatening you you it's a part

[34:59] of life it's a part of

[35:01] you it's embraced it's loved it's

[35:07] Inseparable so this beautiful quality

[35:09] shines true and it doesn't always have

[35:11] to smell like

[35:13] roses so what you say

[35:16] is when you really be in your

[35:23] experience everything unbinds

[35:28] as it always already does the only

[35:31] difference is the thought that it

[35:33] doesn't unwind and that I need to do

[35:35] everything I can to manage my experience

[35:38] that's the only thought that's relaxing

[35:41] into as well and when we relax that kind

[35:43] of reference point we enjoy this open

[35:48] spacious

[35:49] spontaneous vibrant living life living

[35:52] itself and we're part of that we're

[35:55] participating but with a very we take

[35:57] that very lightly with a relaxed kind of

[36:01] Joy because no longer do we project our

[36:03] joy to be caused by situations so the

[36:07] management mode in order to get there

[36:09] drops because our enjoyment that which

[36:12] everybody is seeking for that Bliss that

[36:14] happiness yeah is found not to be there

[36:18] not to be in a set of circumstances that

[36:20] look and feel a particular way that

[36:22] caess enjoyment is

[36:24] found in My Simple Choice to relax

[36:29] again and again to relax what I think is

[36:33] right and wrong what I think I should be

[36:37] experiencing and to be totally

[36:39] fearlessly vulnerable again and again

[36:41] more and

[36:42] more in that we find our well-being we

[36:45] find our peace we find our

[36:47] freedom and we find it in the midst of

[36:50] our depressions in the midst of our

[36:52] emotions not as separate from in the

[36:55] midst of them appearing we realize we

[36:56] still have the choice

[36:58] not to worry about them at least for 2

[37:00] to 5 seconds and to become aware of this

[37:03] natural aliveness of

[37:06] being which more and more will will

[37:08] shine and fill us with a

[37:10] joy that becomes more powerful than our

[37:13] projections about Joy being gained

[37:15] through

[37:17] circumstances and so naturally because

[37:19] this Joy is here we live a free life and

[37:22] we don't have to do that we don't really

[37:24] have to integrate that because we're

[37:27] just enjoying it we're enjoying

[37:30] ourselves and because of that

[37:33] freedom all the kind of the nasty

[37:35] grapping and holding on for

[37:38] things gradually dissolves more and

[37:42] more so it sounds

[37:47] wonderful so after you had this

[37:50] realization of I

[37:52] exist how did the world change for you

[38:00] only my definitions how

[38:02] did your mind change how did your body

[38:06] change what

[38:12] happened I think the body became more

[38:14] healthy more

[38:16] energized more relaxed more powerful it

[38:19] can take a Lot Like H it's like this

[38:22] River of pure potential flowing

[38:26] through um

[38:31] how do you see the world how do I see

[38:33] the world well I don't emphasize the

[38:37] world for example right now you don't

[38:40] notice the

[38:41] microphone because I more interesting to

[38:44] you sorry to say that than the

[38:47] microphone right it's true thank you so

[38:51] because I'm am what we're sharing here

[38:52] is more interesting to you than the

[38:54] microphone you don't notice the

[38:55] microphone it's in the background yes

[38:57] yeah yeah you don't even notice it so

[38:59] you could say uh I don't want to go into

[39:02] extreme terms because that's not

[39:03] relevant but you could say to degree

[39:06] that the microphone doesn't exist to you

[39:09] unless you think about it yes so how do

[39:12] I see the world well I would have to

[39:14] think about

[39:15] that what is my experience my experience

[39:18] is that of being here my experience is

[39:21] that I exist that's really my only

[39:24] experience and within that all kinds of

[39:27] beautiful adversities arise but I'm not

[39:30] focused on the descriptions as much

[39:32] anymore of course it's practical you

[39:34] know and I use Concepts I use

[39:36] conventional terms I use

[39:38] labels and I prefer this over that

[39:42] everything you or anybody else

[39:45] experiences but I don't that emphasis on

[39:48] the world containing your happiness or

[39:50] your

[39:52] doom is let go of because I've relaxed

[39:55] that tendency again and again I've

[39:57] relaxed my mind again and again and I've

[40:01] been completely vulnerable with life as

[40:03] it is again and again not describing

[40:06] what it is but letting go of that

[40:09] Focus simply noticing the existence

[40:12] throughout all of

[40:13] it hence or ex instead of existence you

[40:17] could say

[40:18] awareness or Joy or relaxation or

[40:23] Freedom so when I don't worry about

[40:26] something for 2 seconds I know I have

[40:28] the choice not to worry about this

[40:29] something for 2 seconds it's like a

[40:31] light switch so tell me about that

[40:33] more um when you notice in the face of

[40:37] your most intimate

[40:41] fears that you don't have to go into a

[40:44] story about it you don't have to it's

[40:48] optional if even you realize this for 2

[40:51] to 5

[40:53] Seconds that releases a tremendous

[40:55] amount of stress I mean it releases it

[40:59] as in it sets it

[41:00] free it's a

[41:03] relief for those two seconds you confirm

[41:06] to your entire being that whatever

[41:08] appears doesn't harm

[41:10] you but when I hold on to a reference

[41:13] point I am this and that experience or

[41:16] this

[41:16] emotion is meaning something about this

[41:19] who I am or I need to keep it at a

[41:21] distance then then I embody a reference

[41:24] point and any reference point is

[41:26] vulnerable is can be harmed because it's

[41:29] temporary when a relax holding on to

[41:32] that reference point of I am somebody or

[41:34] I am awareness or I am this or I that

[41:36] and I simply relax all

[41:39] Focus suddenly I cannot even pinpoint

[41:43] where the emotion is what it is uh where

[41:46] I am there's just free being free

[41:51] awareness so does suffering

[41:54] disappear or is it okay to suffer it's

[41:58] okay to suffer so suffer gets suffering

[42:00] gets a whole yeah perfect so suffering

[42:03] gets a whole different gestal a whole

[42:05] different

[42:06] connotation emotions are still there in

[42:09] fact their capacity increases they start

[42:11] to embody they start to

[42:14] embrace you could almost say other

[42:16] people's emotions or the world the state

[42:18] of the world you become receptive you

[42:20] become intuitive more and more at least

[42:22] that's my

[42:23] experience because the more vulnerable

[42:25] you are the more you realize you're

[42:27] actually

[42:28] indestructible in your vulnerability

[42:30] it's very important to relax as being

[42:33] totally vulnerable totally innocent like

[42:35] a child not knowing what you should

[42:37] experience in that vulnerability you

[42:39] realize your

[42:40] indestructibility because you're not

[42:42] harmed you're still here after all the

[42:44] emotions are gone and you realize you

[42:46] are still here as the emotions are

[42:49] there and through this indestructibility

[42:52] and

[42:53] vulnerability naturally the heart you

[42:55] could say opens

[42:57] and it Embraces

[42:59] everything and it becomes more skillful

[43:01] and more uh potent more powerful and

[43:05] more intuitive and more clear the heart

[43:09] you could yeah it's just the description

[43:12] the heart you could say the heart right

[43:14] kind of feels like that

[43:16] yeah or you could just say you you

[43:19] become more vulnerable more open more

[43:21] intuitive more in

[43:25] tune more subtle

[43:29] so was was

[43:32] this a process in you or

[43:38] um did that happen just

[43:41] spontaneously after they realization

[43:44] that you had this you were in flow with

[43:47] life you had this

[43:50] understanding did it's been a process

[43:53] yeah yeah a gradual

[43:57] you know like dark turning into day

[44:00] night turning into day you can't really

[44:02] pinpoint where it starts where it

[44:05] ends it's just a an Ever

[44:09] increase of surrender of

[44:11] relaxation of knowing that you're free

[44:15] utterly perfectly free no matter what

[44:18] your experience is that conviction is

[44:21] like the

[44:24] sunrising what did you do to remember

[44:26] that then you have to

[44:29] remember yeah the suffering reminded me

[44:33] yeah and the drive I guess that instinct

[44:37] for wanting to have the ultimate

[44:39] whatever that was whatever that is that

[44:40] is the love for the truth love for the

[44:42] truth yeah

[44:45] yeah

[44:47] yeah so I would say it's both sudden and

[44:51] gradual it's sudden in the sense that

[44:53] only right now can you notice the very

[44:55] fact that you exist and stop emphasizing

[44:58] your stories for a moment simply

[45:00] acknowledge

[45:01] deeply I

[45:05] exist for that moment there is an ease

[45:08] of being yeah I can feel that I can feel

[45:11] the beauty in that yeah the

[45:14] silence yeah so that is a

[45:18] being that's all Awakening is that

[45:21] moment right there TAA there's no

[45:24] Enlightenment don't wait for a moment

[45:27] please don't because there's not going

[45:29] to be a moment this is the moment you

[45:31] can only decide not to worry about your

[45:33] circumstances and your feelings and rest

[45:36] as you

[45:37] are that's a moment of Awakening and

[45:41] then doubt arises for most

[45:45] people then the process or the the

[45:47] development is to allow that doubt to be

[45:50] recognized and to grow convinced of your

[45:54] freedom in the midst of doubts coming

[45:55] and going by seeing that they're not

[45:57] affecting anything and you can't

[45:59] separate them out from that purity of

[46:01] being without the purity of being no

[46:04] experience and also no purity of being

[46:06] without the

[46:07] experience like the reflection in the

[46:09] mirror they are one they're not two

[46:12] things conjoined they are one there's

[46:14] one life you can't find anything

[46:16] separate from life you can't find

[46:19] anything separate from

[46:21] experience and so to relax as your

[46:23] present

[46:24] experience is to relax as life itself

[46:27] and to not make any distinction between

[46:29] awareness or unawareness or this versus

[46:32] that or non Duality versus Duality ego

[46:36] versus no

[46:39] ego it sounds it sounds too simple it

[46:44] is it's cheating it's cheating yeah

[46:47] because we somehow have this concept uh

[46:51] we were told it only can happen to us

[46:54] through

[46:55] Grace yes yeah nothing we can do so what

[46:59] you say is there is something we and I

[47:02] guess that's probably the new teaching

[47:04] who is coming to save us yeah it's a

[47:07] whole a whole new generation coming into

[47:11] this world to actually tell the people

[47:16] no just forget everything yeah just just

[47:19] relax don't do your homework just relax

[47:22] yeah I guess we have to finish I'm um

[47:28] one thing about Grace if I can I have

[47:30] one minute yes there's nothing separate

[47:33] from your experience so there cannot be

[47:35] something or someone or an ultimate

[47:37] State apart from your experience that's

[47:39] somehow giving Grace to your

[47:41] experience your experience is all

[47:43] wherever is so Grace is simply the grace

[47:46] of your own confidence to have the grace

[47:50] to Grant yourself this confidence this

[47:53] conviction this unflinching being here

[47:56] in which you notice that nothing affects

[47:58] you

[47:59] essentially the grace of your own

[48:01] confidence don't wait for anything or

[48:03] anybody because that only exists the

[48:05] guru only exists or the grace only

[48:08] exists in your projection about it it's

[48:12] nowhere to be found you can find Grace

[48:14] as something only in your thought about

[48:16] it oh that's Grace and I'm going to wait

[48:18] for it to come to

[48:20] me the grace is to be confident to Grant

[48:24] yourself this confidence I am free no

[48:27] matter what appears I am free also I

[48:31] might not feel it in the

[48:34] moment but uh I'm still free yes that

[48:38] conviction that confidence that is Grace

[48:41] to be able to give that to

[48:44] yourself yeah thank you thank you it's a

[48:48] good um way to finish I just want to say

[48:52] that uh there are two books uh for free

[48:56] download uh um on bentino's

[49:00] website um he doesn't charge anything

[49:03] but uh uh donations are welcome that's

[49:07] his only source of income I hear and um

[49:11] that sounds really like in the flow of

[49:12] Life existent takes care of

[49:15] you and there are three books in the

[49:18] pipeline I I uh I hear um there's no

[49:23] title yet but uh they're supposed to

[49:26] come out by the end of the year and um

[49:30] well thank you for coming and give us

[49:32] this teaching and watch out BOS do a 4

[49:37] minutes awareness meditation after this

[49:40] program where he guides us

[49:44] into that we just exist I think okay

[49:49] well thank you for watching conscious TV

[49:51] and hope to see you again soon bye-bye

[50:15] hello my name is bentinho masaro and I

[50:18] will take you on a little guided

[50:20] meditation on the inescapability of

[50:24] awareness in order to avoid that we're

[50:27] trying to reach awareness or trying to

[50:29] find ourselves or trying to be it all

[50:32] the time so we realize instead the

[50:36] incapability of who we are the

[50:37] inescapability of

[50:41] being so if you just relax your thought

[50:45] for this moment you just relax thinking

[50:48] about

[50:49] things generally we're focused on things

[50:52] and descriptions for now we just relax

[50:55] this

[51:03] we notied that there is an awareness of

[51:07] this

[51:09] moment there is a knowing of the fact

[51:12] that I exist right here right

[51:17] now we can also notice how no matter

[51:20] what thought arises or sensation or

[51:24] feeling or whatever happens around

[51:29] me all of that is included in the

[51:33] awareness which is aware of this moment

[51:40] already awareness is always already

[51:43] present in other words you as being here

[51:48] as life itself you as

[51:52] existing are always here already no

[51:56] matter what you do or don't do to get

[52:02] here for example something is seeing you

[52:05] could say through these eyes something

[52:08] is knowing your visual

[52:11] perception now when you close your eyes

[52:14] for 10

[52:16] seconds you can notice that there is

[52:19] also that same knowing of the fact that

[52:22] you have your eyes

[52:24] closed so it's not limited to visual

[52:26] perception ition awareness is that which

[52:29] knows that you perceive

[52:32] nothing

[52:34] visually and as you open your eyes

[52:37] again that same knowing of this moment

[52:41] is still available to be

[52:46] recognized something knows that you

[52:49] exist right here right now regardless of

[52:55] what you experience

[53:03] just for this moment we remain as we

[53:07] are undisturbed by our Sensations and

[53:11] thoughts and we notice that whatever

[53:14] happens and whatever is

[53:19] experienced

[53:20] awareness is

[53:23] inescapable you existing

[53:27] is

[53:35] inescapable we relax as we

[53:38] are noticing the inescapability of being

[53:43] here we do this again and again with

[53:47] whatever form our experience takes we

[53:50] make no

[53:51] distinctions we relax as we are

[53:55] again and again

Frequently Asked Questions

Bentinho Massaro is a non-duality teacher who was described as one of the youngest in the field, and he was twenty-three when he spoke with Renate McNay for Conscious TV in 2011. In the interview he traces his spiritual seeking back to around the age of sixteen.
In this conversation, free awareness refers to the recognition that the one who experiences every state of mind is always the same. He describes it as a fundamental changelessness that remains whatever is happening, and he frames practice as simply noticing that one exists rather than trying to reach a special state.
He says he felt that the teachers' systems were superimposing a philosophical structure onto something natural. After training for three years and travelling in India, he found he could no longer believe in yet another system with its required steps, and he began to relax into his own natural presence instead.
Yes, he describes practicing telekinesis, moving objects without touching them, for about half a year around age fifteen or sixteen. He concluded that even if he got better at it, it was just a funny trick, and that it was not getting him or anyone anywhere, so he moved on. He said he did not bend spoons.
Massaro's point is that seeking a state treats awareness as something to be achieved, which keeps the seeker in a loop of effort. Noticing awareness means attending to the plain fact that one exists and is present with whatever arises, without adding a method or a goal on top of it.
Massaro says he was not really bothered by the lack of peers who shared his naturalness. He described the realization as its own fulfillment and self-satisfaction, while acknowledging a human sense of being misperceived or not fully understood by others.
