Enlightenment as a Spectrum, Not a Single Experience

Bentinho Massaro

Early in the first session of a free online retreat recorded during the 2020 lockdown, Bentinho Massaro sets out to do something most teachers of awakening rarely attempt: define the word before using it. He argues that enlightenment is possible, that it is not a single dramatic event but a gradual change in how consciousness knows itself, and that the spiritual path is mostly a matter of becoming familiar with a ground of being that most people have been overlooking. The talk is a clear, unhurried introduction to a teaching that asks listeners to look at their own attention before they look at any doctrine.

What does it sound like to open a retreat in the middle of a quarantine?

The session begins without ceremony. "Welcome everyone. Thank you for being here." Massaro acknowledges the strange moment: "here we are in the middle of a quarantine," with people gathering online, "like-minded hearts and souls," to explore what is real. He frames the gathering as a response to what he hears humanity asking for, which is clarity, inner direction, and some guidance about where to place attention and energy when everything outside feels unstable.

That framing is worth noticing, because it shapes the entire talk. Massaro is not presenting enlightenment as an exotic achievement reserved for monks in mountain caves. He presents it as a practical orientation for people who are anxious, confined and looking for solid ground. He describes what he offers as "translations of direct experiences of the nature of consciousness" and "translations of ancient teachings," and he adds a caveat that runs through the whole session: none of these teachings really originate anywhere. They have no location, no time, no age. "They're simply the way of existence."

Is enlightenment actually possible for an ordinary person?

Massaro answers this question with the bluntest possible statement of his position. "That it is possible. That is my premise. That is my experience. That is my conviction. That is my message." He is not hedging, and he is not asking the audience to take it on faith. The rest of the retreat is built to let people test it for themselves, which is why he emphasizes first-hand access over borrowed belief.

The premise matters because it changes the question. If enlightenment were a rare event that either happens or doesn't, the only useful advice would be to wait. Massaro's approach implies that there is something to work with right now, in the ordinary act of paying attention. That is a more demanding idea than it sounds, since it makes every moment of attention a possible site of recognition.

Why does this teacher describe enlightenment as a spectrum?

Here the talk makes its most important conceptual move. Massaro says that, in his way of describing and teaching it, enlightenment "is not a black or white kind of thing." He also says it "is not actually an experience," and he prefers to picture it as a spectrum: "the evolution of consciousness, the awakening of consciousness, the ascension of consciousness, the expansion of consciousness." He defines the movement along that spectrum as "the increase in the density or brightness with which an entity, a being as a consciousness knows itself."

Two phrases in that definition do most of the work. The first is "density or brightness," a metaphor of light that suggests degrees rather than switches. The second is his remark that this increase comes "gradually for most with some leaps typically." That combination is useful for anyone who has felt disappointed by a single peak experience and wondered why nothing seemed to stick. On this model, a moment of clarity is not a failure to be permanently enlightened. It is one point on a line that keeps extending.

Massaro uses the same idea when he describes enlightenment as "a process of familiarizing yourself, of getting acquainted to, of becoming familiar with that which you have heretofore not really paid attention to." The emphasis falls on attention rather than achievement. You are not acquiring a new state. You are getting to know a state that was always present but unnoticed.

What actually changes when consciousness wakes up?

The talk asks a sequence of questions that reads almost like a set list: "What is that shift made of? What does it do? What is it? What change are we talking about? What's the result? Why would I want it? And what do I have to let go of in order to get it or get more of it?" It is a good template for any listener, because it forces the teaching to answer concrete questions instead of floating in abstractions.

His answers point toward a recognition he calls "I Am-ness" or "I am conscious, I am aware," and toward what he describes as a "natural state." He suggests that this recognition is not a form, not a particular feeling, and not a concept. It is closer to the quality of existence itself. He is careful to say that this does not make a person strange or unrelatable. The change is inward first, and its visible effects are supposed to arrive gradually.

He also points to a dimension that he calls non-local, a term he uses to suggest that awareness is not located in the body. This is where the talk becomes most demanding, because it asks the listener to notice the difference between being aware and being an object within awareness. Massaro insists that everything that appears does so within this awareness, and that "everything is an appearance." The practical implication is that thoughts, emotions and identities are seen differently once they are recognized as things that come and go within a field that does not come and go.

Why is being human so hard to see clearly?

Massaro's critique of ordinary identity is sharp, and it is delivered with the rhythm of a teacher who has said this many times and still enjoys it. He asks: "When we say, 'I am a human being,' what are we really saying that I am?" His answer, typically, is that most people stop at the body. "We are a clump of flesh that goes around this planet having to abide by Newton's laws," he says, and the joke lands because it names the default assumption so plainly.

He pushes further with an uncomfortable question. Did we originally produce the concept of being a human being, or did we inherit it? He wonders whether there is a "blueprint intention," a purpose shared by every being, that sits underneath the training we receive about how to be human "according to humans." That is a bold claim, and he presents it as a question to be explored rather than a doctrine to memorize. The invitation is to examine assumptions that were absorbed so early they feel like facts.

"What if underneath all that there is sort of a blueprint intention, a baseline purpose that every being potentially, perhaps, shares as their foundational intention or blueprint for being, for appearing, for manifesting themselves in the form of this mind-body-spirit complex."

— Bentinho Massaro, opening session of his 2020 online retreat

What is the practical instruction in a talk like this?

An introductory session still needs something to do, and the most telling practical note is his brief insistence that "relaxation is key." He returns to the body and to the act of relating to oneself as a body while paying attention to experience, rather than treating attention as something to strain with. For listeners used to effortful spiritual disciplines, this is an important correction. The aim is not to force a state. It is to loosen the grip of habitual identification so that awareness can be seen more clearly.

He also invites listeners to notice what is already there. "Do you want freedom?" he asks at one point, and the question is framed as a choice rather than a demand. The freedom he describes is "a sense of liberation" and "empowerment that has very little to do with accomplishing things in the world," rooted instead in something he calls transcendental and "beyond space and time." It is a striking promise, and he is aware that it can sound grandiose, which is why he keeps returning to the first-hand nature of the inquiry.

How should a newcomer approach a talk like this?

Massaro is explicit that this session is meant to be accessible. He says the first few sessions of the retreat are tailored to people who are new to this kind of material, while acknowledging that longtime students will hear things anew. "Every moment of recognition of this true self is fresh," he says, and he uses an image of a shovel digging deeper into a hole toward "that well of total well-being." Repetition, in his telling, is not a sign of stagnation. It is how familiarity deepens.

For a reader who has not watched, the most useful takeaway is simple. Enlightenment, as Massaro frames it, is possible, gradual, and rooted in attention. You do not have to believe any particular cosmology to test the premise. You only have to notice, with some patience and some relaxation, what is aware of your experience right now. The rest of the retreat, as the numbering of the series suggests, is an unfolding of that single invitation.

Where to go from here

This video is the first in an eight-part sequence, and the title's numbering signals that the opening session is meant to set the vocabulary for everything that follows. Read this article as a map of the premises, then watch the talk itself with the questions in mind: what is the shift made of, what changes, and what must be let go of? Pay attention to the moments when Massaro slows down and asks you to notice something directly. Those are the parts of the session where the teaching is meant to be tested rather than understood.

If you are new to this material, give yourself permission to return to the same introduction more than once. Massaro himself suggests that the explanation reintroduces you each time you hear it. And if you are already familiar with his language of consciousness and I Am-ness, use the opening session as a reset, a chance to hear the premise again as though for the first time.

[0:03] Welcome everyone.

[0:05] Thank you for being here.

[0:28] So, here we are

[0:31] in the middle of a quarantine.

[0:34] Getting together with like-minded hearts

[0:36] and souls

[0:38] to explore the nature of what's real.

[0:41] The nature of ourselves.

[0:43] The nature of consciousness.

[0:51] And so

[0:55] it is obvious that what humanity is

[0:57] calling for right now is

[1:00] a sense of clarity, inner direction.

[1:04] A sense of guidance

[1:06] within themselves as to what to place

[1:08] their attention on.

[1:10] What to focus on.

[1:12] What to invest their energy into.

[1:16] And so I felt called to offer

[1:18] what I can.

[1:21] Which is

[1:23] translations

[1:25] of direct experiences of the nature of

[1:28] consciousness.

[1:33] Translations of

[1:35] ancient teachings.

[1:36] Teachings of the East, if you will.

[1:39] Although

[1:40] none of these true teachings really

[1:42] originate anywhere.

[1:45] They don't have a location. They don't

[1:46] have a time. They don't have an age.

[1:48] They're simply the way

[1:50] of existence.

[2:14] Are we good?

[2:16] Yes, okay.

[2:21] So

[2:25] in the midst of all this turmoil, in the

[2:27] midst of all this confusion, this chaos

[2:31] or at least

[2:33] seemingly so.

[2:36] I want to provide you

[2:38] with the tools to recognize this

[2:42] ground of being.

[2:44] The substratum, the root

[2:47] of yourself, the root of your being.

[2:51] So that all your attention can go

[2:53] towards that. Or at least more of your

[2:56] attention than has been going towards

[2:58] that can go towards that.

[3:00] With the result being

[3:01] and we'll get into this more as we go.

[3:05] The result being freedom.

[3:07] Clarity.

[3:09] A sense of liberation.

[3:12] A sense of empowerment that has very

[3:15] little to do with

[3:19] accomplishing things in the world or

[3:22] or even feeling a certain way about

[3:23] yourself as a person or

[3:25] dressing a certain way or

[3:29] but rather an empowerment that is rooted

[3:32] in something truly transcendental.

[3:34] Something truly

[3:36] beyond space and time.

[3:43] There is um

[3:46] there are a lot of people right now

[3:48] watching that are most likely I'm

[3:51] somewhat assuming, somewhat knowing

[3:54] new to this type of material, at least

[3:56] to some degree.

[3:57] There will be some who have followed my

[3:59] work for a while who are

[4:01] more

[4:03] seasoned practitioners of these types of

[4:05] teachings.

[4:06] And so they have more context.

[4:08] But because

[4:11] a big part of this intention is to be

[4:12] able to give simple tools to the world

[4:16] so that an actual sense of spirituality,

[4:18] an actual sense of enlightenment can be

[4:21] transmitted. Can be delivered

[4:24] to

[4:26] anyone who's even remotely interested in

[4:29] finding out for themselves

[4:31] what their true self is made of.

[4:34] And what the benefits are of being able

[4:36] to access this true self.

[4:40] And which brings me to the basic point

[4:42] or premise for us meeting here together,

[4:44] which is the whole idea of

[4:46] enlightenment.

[4:49] So I'll begin by kind of exploring

[4:52] or giving definition, giving

[4:54] understanding, giving description to

[4:56] what is spirituality? What is

[4:58] enlightenment?

[5:01] And it is my intention to make the first

[5:02] two or three or so sessions

[5:05] of this um and maybe more

[5:08] of this

[5:10] at least month-long

[5:12] twice a week

[5:14] retreat

[5:16] to keep it

[5:17] not to keep it, but to to make it

[5:21] simple enough

[5:23] introductory enough so where

[5:26] anyone who's watching can understand.

[5:28] And the beauty of these teachings is

[5:30] that even

[5:31] as you hear the introduction

[5:34] it reintroduces you all over again.

[5:36] Because every moment of recognition of

[5:39] this true self

[5:40] is fresh. Every time you recognize it,

[5:42] it's like your shovel digs a little bit

[5:44] deeper into that hole

[5:46] towards that well of total well-being.

[5:50] So it doesn't really matter if you're

[5:51] seasoned practitioner or if this is the

[5:54] first time you've ever heard any of

[5:56] these sentences.

[5:58] These tools, these introductions, these

[6:00] guided meditations, these explanations

[6:04] will give you first-hand access. Will

[6:06] deepen your first-hand direct experience

[6:09] access

[6:11] to something really profoundly true

[6:14] liberating and clarifying.

[6:17] So it'll continue to be relevant for all

[6:20] sort of

[6:21] students, if you will, or stages.

[6:25] But I want to make sure that the first

[6:26] two, three, four sessions

[6:29] are tailored to

[6:32] potentially new people. So I welcome you

[6:35] if you are new to this type of material,

[6:36] this type of practice.

[6:38] Uh and my work specifically as well.

[6:41] Or my translations specifically as well.

[6:44] Then I welcome you.

[6:47] Um I appreciate you being here and

[6:49] it is my intention to deliver tools

[6:52] at your doorstep that will help you

[6:56] get to know who you really are. And

[6:58] again, all the benefits that result from

[7:00] that.

[7:01] So

[7:02] let us begin

[7:04] by exploring

[7:05] the concept, the existence, the premise,

[7:08] the idea

[7:09] of

[7:10] enlightenment.

[7:13] You've all heard the term probably.

[7:16] Most people know it in relationship to

[7:19] perhaps Buddhism

[7:20] or the Buddha who attained

[7:23] enlightenment, Nirvana.

[7:26] Um and of course similar references are

[7:29] made in different religions and

[7:30] philosophies.

[7:35] So you're familiar with it to some

[7:36] degree, I'm sure, at least the concept

[7:38] of it. Otherwise you probably also

[7:39] wouldn't be here. So but the premise of

[7:42] enlightenment

[7:43] the concept of it implies that we

[7:46] believe there exists such

[7:49] a realization, such a recognition, such

[7:52] a transformation in consciousness. That

[7:54] that's even possible.

[7:56] And yes, it is possible. That is my

[7:58] premise. That is my

[8:00] experience. That is my conviction. That

[8:03] is my message. That it is possible.

[8:07] Then the second question would be then

[8:12] what is it? If it is possible to have

[8:13] such a profound shift in

[8:15] then

[8:16] what exactly is that shift made of? What

[8:19] does it do?

[8:20] What is it? What change

[8:23] are we talking about? What type of

[8:24] transformation?

[8:26] What's the result? Why would I want it?

[8:29] And what do I have to let go of in order

[8:31] to

[8:33] get it or get more of it?

[8:36] Cuz as you'll see

[8:38] enlightenment, at least in my way of

[8:40] describing and teaching it

[8:41] is not a black or white kind of

[8:45] thing. Also because enlightenment is not

[8:47] actually an experience.

[8:53] And

[8:54] again, I'll get into these details. I'll

[8:56] get into these descriptions.

[8:58] But for now

[9:00] see enlightenment as a spectrum.

[9:02] Spectrum of the evolution of

[9:04] consciousness, the awakening of

[9:06] consciousness, the ascension of

[9:07] consciousness, the expansion of

[9:09] consciousness. The increase

[9:12] in the dense the density

[9:15] or brightness with which an entity, a

[9:18] being as a consciousness knows itself.

[9:21] So an increase

[9:23] gradually for most with some leaps

[9:25] typically, but overall gradually for

[9:27] most.

[9:29] Enlightenment is a

[9:32] process or at least an aspect of the

[9:35] science of enlightenment could be

[9:37] described as a process

[9:39] of familiarizing yourself, of getting

[9:42] acquainted to, of

[9:44] becoming

[9:46] familiar with

[9:48] that which you have heretofore not

[9:51] really paid attention to.

[9:54] That which you have not recognized. That

[9:56] true state. That

[9:59] which you have not

[10:00] been practicing. You've been practicing

[10:02] a lot of other different kinds of focus

[10:04] points and things and

[10:07] you've had so much awareness and

[10:09] training in how to be human

[10:12] according to humans.

[10:14] How to be human

[10:16] according to other humans, right?

[10:19] So, but what if

[10:22] the [clears throat] true purpose of

[10:22] being human transcends the typical

[10:25] training that we receive

[10:27] in what it means to be human. What if

[10:30] there is this

[10:32] incredible, difficult to describe,

[10:34] transformational journey that we are on,

[10:36] that we are meant to be on, perhaps

[10:38] even.

[10:40] A purpose

[10:41] that brought us here, that

[10:44] makes us

[10:46] continue to wake up every day and do

[10:48] what we do and be driven to do what we

[10:51] do, be motivated to do what we do. What

[10:54] if underneath all that there is sort of

[10:56] a blueprint intention,

[10:58] a baseline purpose

[11:00] that every being

[11:02] potentially, perhaps, shares

[11:04] as their foundational intention or

[11:06] blueprint for being,

[11:08] for appearing, for manifesting

[11:10] themselves

[11:11] in the form of this mind-body-spirit

[11:13] complex

[11:16] or aka entity

[11:20] or individuated spark of the creator or

[11:23] individuated spark of God or

[11:25] individuated spark of that universal

[11:27] consciousness.

[11:28] Right? The mind-body-spirit complex.

[11:33] Why? Why are we here?

[11:37] And

[11:38] what is possible for us?

[11:41] And where did we develop the term or

[11:43] concept of being a human being?

[11:47] Who gave that to us? Did we

[11:49] originally

[11:51] produce that thought,

[11:53] that association, that concept of what

[11:55] it means to be a human being?

[11:58] And even the assumption, the belief that

[12:00] we are

[12:01] a human being.

[12:04] And what that is limited to for most

[12:06] people in their understanding. When we

[12:08] say, "I am a human being." What are we

[12:11] really saying that I am, that we are?

[12:14] And typically you will find

[12:16] it doesn't go far beyond

[12:19] that that means that we are a body, we

[12:22] are a clump of flesh that

[12:25] goes around this planet having to abide

[12:28] by Newton's laws and um

[12:32] randomly kind of goes about its

[12:35] job or whereabouts and it picks up

[12:38] desires along the way, it prefers

[12:40] pleasure over pain and so it sets out on

[12:42] this journey to create a life for itself

[12:45] where pleasure is prioritized and pain

[12:47] is attempted to be avoided as much as

[12:49] possible. And we try to secure around

[12:52] this physical body,

[12:54] this physical vehicle that we believe is

[12:56] us. We then attempt to secure for

[12:59] ourselves a series of ongoing

[13:01] circumstances that provide us with

[13:04] safety, physical safety,

[13:06] mental-emotional safety,

[13:08] self-worth safety, and social safety.

[13:13] And

[13:14] we then continue to live

[13:17] in that situational type of

[13:19] consciousness of being a body

[13:21] surrounding itself with what it then

[13:24] calls my life

[13:26] filled with components and elements that

[13:29] it has a relationship to, with its mind,

[13:32] with its thoughts,

[13:34] definitions and concepts that it has

[13:36] about

[13:37] ideas that it has and beliefs that it

[13:39] has about what it perceives, the objects

[13:42] that it gathers about itself.

[13:45] And then it continues in this sort of

[13:47] assumption, in this bubble of being

[13:49] human, and it continues to try to

[13:52] proliferate that bubble of safety and

[13:55] comfort, to expand that perhaps a little

[13:57] bit. Some people are more driven to

[13:59] expand that, they seem a little bit more

[14:01] adventurous, they take more risk. Others

[14:03] seem more conservative with their

[14:05] bubble, they are happy with it as it is,

[14:08] content with it as it is and they'd

[14:09] rather

[14:10] keep it as it is rather than um expand

[14:13] and take risks on it. Safety is uh

[14:16] important

[14:17] to them from the point of view of being

[14:19] the body.

[14:21] And there's a a lot of other ways in

[14:23] which we could summarize what it means

[14:25] to be human, but I'm just trying to

[14:26] paint a general picture of

[14:29] what we assume it is to be human and

[14:31] that we create this bubble around our

[14:35] mind-body-spirit complex or our

[14:37] entity-ness, our being-ness, our

[14:40] perceived self or our assumed sense of

[14:44] self.

[14:47] And we don't really look far beyond that

[14:49] bubble, typically, most people.

[14:51] But

[14:53] every once in a while there is an entity

[14:56] who is either born with or somehow

[14:59] during its lifetime

[15:01] is catalyzed or inspired into seeking

[15:05] beyond this bubble.

[15:07] Similar to the story of the Buddha who

[15:09] pretty much had everything a human being

[15:13] identified as the body could ever want,

[15:16] being a prince surrounded with

[15:18] fortunes and blessings and safety and

[15:21] security and

[15:23] everything

[15:24] a man could hope for, so to speak.

[15:27] And yet

[15:28] being exposed, or at least so the story

[15:31] goes,

[15:33] being exposed to

[15:35] beggars and people living in the streets

[15:37] and old people

[15:39] and death,

[15:41] questions started to appear to this

[15:43] entity

[15:44] that urged it to ask

[15:47] as to the boundaries of its bubble, the

[15:50] validity of its bubble, and what the

[15:51] truth is

[15:54] beyond that bubble.

[15:57] And seeing that suffering firsthand

[16:00] outside of its own bubble or at the

[16:02] fringes of its own bubble, the edges of

[16:04] its own bubble, it became inspired to

[16:06] seek for a solution for the suffering,

[16:08] an answer to the suffering.

[16:11] And so in a similar way, every once in a

[16:13] while there is a being

[16:15] and there's more and more of us

[16:18] these days

[16:19] that are really inspired to look beyond

[16:22] the conventional ideas

[16:24] and that are born with or inspired with

[16:27] a sense that everything is possible or

[16:30] at least that the solution to the

[16:32] suffering, that the truth, if you will,

[16:35] whatever that might be, the truth, the

[16:38] experiential inner truth, the truth of

[16:40] existence itself,

[16:42] can somehow be accessed, can somehow be

[16:44] realized by this mind-body-spirit

[16:46] complex.

[16:48] And therefore it is inspired because it

[16:51] believes it is possible.

[16:53] You see, it's very important to believe

[16:55] that enlightenment.

[16:56] And again, think of enlightenment as a

[16:58] spectrum or a gradient, a sliding scale.

[17:01] Don't think of it as black and white,

[17:03] it's not helpful for most people at most

[17:06] stages of this journey. So, think of it

[17:08] as a spectrum,

[17:10] as a sliding scale, as a gradient.

[17:13] But it is important that we believe

[17:15] enlightenment

[17:17] or greater enlightenment, more and more

[17:20] enlightenment to be possible.

[17:22] If we don't believe it is possible, then

[17:25] how would we

[17:26] be inspired, how would we be inspired to

[17:30] use our attention in such a way as to

[17:34] maximize the probabilities of

[17:37] our increasing realization of the true

[17:39] self.

[17:42] So, first of all, we have to believe

[17:44] that it exists.

[17:46] And I assume that to some degree, at

[17:48] least, you believe

[17:49] there is such a thing as enlightenment

[17:51] or this transformational awakening of

[17:54] what you really are

[17:56] to itself in a very deep, direct,

[17:58] experiential way.

[18:02] I assume that you to some degree believe

[18:04] that that is a possibility, that that

[18:06] exists, sorry, that it exists even.

[18:09] Then second of all,

[18:11] like I was saying, it is important that

[18:13] we believe that it is possible for us to

[18:16] actually directly experience this

[18:18] freedom, this truth, this liberation,

[18:20] this clarity, this transcendent

[18:23] state of self-realization or

[18:25] self-awareness.

[18:27] And it is very, very, very possible for

[18:29] every single individual

[18:32] hearing this today.

[18:36] And what a better time

[18:38] to explore this

[18:40] than now

[18:43] when your external reality seemingly is

[18:46] forcing you

[18:48] to go within,

[18:51] to sequester yourself,

[18:55] to turn your attention to what is truly

[18:57] important for you,

[19:00] to take attention away from the

[19:02] externalities,

[19:03] the external situational

[19:07] experience of your day-to-day life, the

[19:09] bubble of your assumptions made

[19:12] manifest.

[19:15] What better opportunity

[19:18] now that we are quarantined, which is

[19:19] just another word for joyfully in

[19:22] retreat with ourselves all around the

[19:25] world,

[19:28] and

[19:29] focus our intention, our efforts, our

[19:32] attention

[19:33] onto topics like these,

[19:36] onto ourselves

[19:38] in a true way, in a way that perhaps

[19:39] some of you have never done before or

[19:41] even considered before.

[19:42] And so again, I'm very excited

[19:45] to be able to deliver this message to

[19:46] you today

[19:47] and to share

[19:51] in this type of exploration

[19:53] at a time like this,

[19:55] it is quite exciting.

[19:57] And uh once again, thank you for being

[19:59] here.

[20:02] I encourage you to stick with this

[20:04] online retreat

[20:06] even as things don't quite make sense

[20:09] yet to your intellect because

[20:11] what you will find with material like

[20:13] this is that the most important aspect

[20:15] of it is the direct introduction to

[20:18] what's being spoken about.

[20:20] It's not so much about developing a

[20:21] conceptual framework or intellectual

[20:24] understanding

[20:25] of what is spoken about here.

[20:27] It is about this direct introduction

[20:31] to this message. And so the more that

[20:33] you're introduced to it in your own

[20:35] direct experience cuz I'm just using my

[20:38] body to produce words for your body to

[20:40] perceive to then interpret

[20:43] and give some meaning to, which then

[20:44] helps you guide your attention to a

[20:46] certain spot in your consciousness, to a

[20:48] certain quality in yourself.

[20:51] Right? So we're we're having to deal

[20:52] with these tools, these distortions,

[20:55] these translation mechanisms. My brain,

[20:58] my vocal cords, your ears, your brain.

[21:02] But ultimately,

[21:03] and perhaps this is a bit too soon for

[21:05] some of you,

[21:06] but we'll get to this understanding.

[21:08] Ultimately, what's really going on here

[21:10] is that consciousness is actually

[21:12] speaking to itself

[21:14] through the illusion

[21:16] of these brains and these vocal cords

[21:19] and these lips and these ears and that

[21:21] brain

[21:22] and that interpreter. It really is a

[21:25] monologue of sorts.

[21:28] And um and you will be able to recognize

[21:30] and realize this

[21:32] underlying unity,

[21:34] this ground of being which

[21:37] is like the canvas to the painting

[21:41] or the screen

[21:43] onto which the movie is projected

[21:47] or the tablecloth which is made of this

[21:49] one unison

[21:50] material yet can be lifted up at

[21:52] different points in that tablecloth,

[21:55] to the degree where it forms its own

[21:57] individuated mountain shapes and these

[21:59] mountain shapes can begin to communicate

[22:02] to each other

[22:03] above the surface level, if you will.

[22:05] But the truth of it is that it is

[22:08] speaking to itself, that there is this

[22:10] great unity

[22:11] which binds all appearances.

[22:15] Which brings me to one of the

[22:16] definitions of enlightenment or

[22:18] self-realization.

[22:20] And that is

[22:22] the realization of oneness,

[22:24] the realization of unity.

[22:28] Because

[22:30] as we deepen our awareness,

[22:33] and I will begin a guided meditation in

[22:35] a little bit to give you this initial

[22:37] introduction

[22:39] in your own direct experience, which is

[22:41] all that matters.

[22:42] Doesn't matter what I say, doesn't

[22:43] matter what you hear, doesn't matter

[22:44] what other people say, doesn't matter

[22:46] what your mind thinks. What matters is

[22:48] that you

[22:49] develop a way to identify within

[22:52] yourself

[22:54] that possibility of which we have been

[22:56] speaking,

[22:57] to which we are hinting,

[22:59] to which we are pointing.

[23:02] The words are not the truth.

[23:04] They are merely the tools we use to help

[23:06] you guide your attention

[23:08] back onto its source.

[23:15] So why don't we just start right there

[23:18] right now.

[23:20] Take a deep breath.

[23:37] Take another deep breath.

[23:42] And relax the tension in your body and

[23:46] in your mind.

[23:54] Take one more deep breath.

[23:58] And kind of let go of the world and

[24:00] circumstances

[24:02] and just really relax.

[24:05] Come back to your natural state of

[24:06] being,

[24:07] your natural center of gravity.

[24:19] Now,

[24:22] let us begin this beautiful process of

[24:24] introducing oneself to oneself.

[24:27] There's nothing quite like it.

[24:29] And this is possible for everyone.

[24:32] Again,

[24:34] remember this is all about direct

[24:36] experience. It is not about what I say.

[24:40] It is not about the way your mind

[24:41] formulates these concepts.

[24:44] To a degree,

[24:45] having a map, an intellectual map or

[24:48] framework, is very helpful.

[24:51] And a lot of my work is geared

[24:54] towards the production of such clear

[24:56] maps.

[24:58] However,

[25:01] it all ends and begins

[25:04] with

[25:05] direct experience. That's all that

[25:07] eventually matters. Your

[25:09] innate, intrinsic,

[25:11] immediate, direct ability

[25:14] to know yourself

[25:15] beyond the filters and the veils and the

[25:18] assumptions

[25:20] that humanity has thrown upon you.

[25:24] A true discovery

[25:27] of what lies ever present

[25:31] beneath the surface level

[25:33] of your thoughts

[25:35] and your emotions and your sensations

[25:38] and your ideas about the world.

[25:44] Relaxation is key.

[25:47] Cuz as we relax,

[25:51] our connection or bandwidth with the

[25:53] intellectual framework

[25:55] mind or analyzer or interpreter

[26:00] diminishes and our bandwidth opens up

[26:02] instead

[26:03] to an intuitive capacity or faculty

[26:07] of recognition.

[26:10] We begin to quite naturally, when we're

[26:11] totally relaxed,

[26:14] we begin to navigate,

[26:17] operate, function

[26:21] at a deeper level of consciousness.

[26:24] And this deeper, more instinctual or

[26:26] intuitive

[26:28] level of consciousness is able to

[26:30] recognize very clearly

[26:33] in a very real way

[26:35] realities or experiences

[26:38] that the everyday

[26:40] busy thinking mind simply does not have

[26:43] the tools to recognize. It's not within

[26:46] its capacity or function.

[26:48] So relaxation is valuable.

[26:51] It's not ultimately needed. The body and

[26:54] the mind do not ultimately need to be

[26:56] relaxed, but you will find it is helpful

[26:58] to have them relaxed as much as possible

[27:01] when you are attempting this

[27:03] say contemplation or meditation or

[27:06] recognition of your true self. It will

[27:08] be valuable to you.

[27:11] And you will find it's also the result

[27:13] of the recognition.

[27:15] So one could go from a stressful state

[27:17] of body and mind

[27:19] where the body and the mind are in a

[27:20] stressful sort of state, everyday state.

[27:24] And upon the recognition, upon the

[27:26] glimpse, upon the sense, that intuitive

[27:28] feeling

[27:30] of this unity, ground of being, this

[27:32] deeper level of consciousness, this

[27:34] truer state of yourself,

[27:38] you will find that the body and the mind

[27:40] typically

[27:42] will adjust

[27:44] to that recognition

[27:46] by relaxing,

[27:47] by sort of opening up, if you will, by

[27:50] loosening up the tension and

[27:52] resting, relaxing. And so recognition of

[27:56] your true self

[27:58] tends to come with a great sense of

[28:00] ease,

[28:03] nourishment,

[28:05] and relaxation.

[28:08] And as it is trusted in more and more,

[28:10] you will even be able to experience

[28:13] states of

[28:15] causeless bliss,

[28:18] a bliss, a happiness, a transcendence, a

[28:20] clarity,

[28:21] a liberation

[28:24] that is without a cause.

[28:28] Most human beings only know happiness

[28:29] with a cause.

[28:31] They only know clarity with a cause.

[28:33] They only know

[28:34] liberation with a cause

[28:36] or joy or satisfaction with a cause.

[28:40] But in the true state of what you are,

[28:43] this joy, this bliss, this freedom is

[28:46] ever present.

[28:48] And it's not affected by anything that

[28:51] you could ever possibly think into

[28:53] existence.

[28:54] Anything.

[28:56] It is completely and truly unaffected.

[29:02] So,

[29:03] for most of your life, you've been

[29:05] relating to yourself as a body

[29:07] with a thinking entity inside of it.

[29:12] And it's such a funny assumption

[29:14] once you've investigated it to the point

[29:17] of its resolve or its disappearance.

[29:22] But for the most part, we've been

[29:23] relating to ourselves

[29:25] as a clump of flesh

[29:27] and bones

[29:29] that somehow carries within its skull

[29:32] a little chamber with a little entity in

[29:34] it, which no neurologist has ever been

[29:37] able to find yet, by the way. That

[29:39] little chamber where the entity exactly

[29:41] resides, it's still a mystery.

[29:43] Perhaps because it's not there.

[29:48] And so that's how we relate to ourselves

[29:50] and others unconsciously on automatic

[29:53] pilot

[29:54] on a day-to-day basis. This is how we

[29:56] spend the majority of our attention

[29:58] our consciousness.

[30:01] But what is consciousness?

[30:04] What is that principle in us which is

[30:06] alive?

[30:09] Because just because the body moves, it

[30:11] doesn't mean that that defines the

[30:13] principle of aliveness.

[30:15] Motion does not quite grasp the true

[30:19] meaning of the word

[30:21] alive

[30:23] or existent

[30:25] or sentient or

[30:28] intelligent or

[30:30] awake

[30:31] or

[30:32] conscious

[30:34] or cognizant.

[30:39] Alive, that which is conscious, which is

[30:42] cognizant, which is able to respond

[30:46] which can know

[30:48] itself and its experience.

[30:50] That

[30:51] is

[30:52] which is alive. That is that which is

[30:55] alive.

[30:56] So my definition of that which is alive

[30:59] equals

[31:01] that which we point to using words such

[31:03] as consciousness or sentience or pure

[31:05] existence.

[31:07] But the motion of the body does not

[31:09] quite capture that. It might be an

[31:11] indication

[31:12] that there is something which is alive,

[31:14] that there's something which is sentient

[31:16] and conscious, which is somehow

[31:18] connected to or or channeled through or

[31:20] is making use of this body.

[31:23] So movement could be seen as an

[31:24] indication of that which is alive.

[31:28] But movement itself does not define

[31:32] that which is alive. It doesn't capture

[31:34] that which is alive.

[31:37] So what is being alive?

[31:40] And this is quite synonymous with you

[31:43] right now

[31:45] are conscious

[31:47] of my words.

[31:50] And when you relax the mind

[31:52] and you don't have to be completely

[31:53] thoughtless. It'd be great if you could.

[31:55] It would be very expedient to our cause.

[31:58] It would help you recognize very

[32:00] instantly what I'm talking about. So by

[32:02] all means try it. But without

[32:05] without generating a lot of frustration

[32:08] about it. But try to

[32:11] have no thoughts for just a second.

[32:13] And important, before you do it.

[32:18] It's not about not having thoughts.

[32:22] It's about what remains when you have no

[32:24] thoughts.

[32:25] It's about recognizing that which

[32:27] remains when you have no thoughts. That

[32:29] sense of I am, that sense of self, that

[32:32] sense of being alive, of existing, of

[32:35] being sentient and conscious and awake

[32:37] and clear and lucid.

[32:40] To recognize that I am lucid lucid, that

[32:45] I am clear, that I am awake, that I

[32:47] exist, that I know that I am.

[32:52] When I have absolutely zero thoughts for

[32:54] just two to five seconds.

[32:57] Or even half a second

[33:00] if two to five is too ambitious for now.

[33:03] But you will be able to do that by the

[33:05] way. With continued practice, you will

[33:07] be able at will

[33:10] to suck all the oxygen out of the mind.

[33:13] Meaning to take away all its fuel for

[33:15] thought, for conceptualizing.

[33:18] Yet without falling asleep.

[33:20] You can stay fully awake, fully

[33:21] sentient, fully aware of yourself of

[33:24] what remains of this

[33:26] pristine primordial state

[33:28] that we are right now being introduced

[33:30] to in our direct experience.

[33:38] With no thoughts.

[33:40] You can do that at will.

[33:44] Granted that's typically a little

[33:46] difficult for people to do at first and

[33:48] that's not not a big deal. It's not a

[33:50] big obstacle.

[33:52] There's many ways around this

[33:54] fact that we have trouble stopping all

[33:57] thoughts at will.

[33:58] But if you can manage it for even a

[34:00] second

[34:01] that would be great because then you can

[34:03] have perhaps the most immediate, the

[34:05] most clear, the most direct

[34:07] experience-based introduction to this

[34:10] natural state, this this

[34:14] indescribable

[34:16] natural condition of yourself beyond all

[34:18] your assumptions of you.

[34:20] Because if you can't think, you can't

[34:22] conceptualize.

[34:23] And pretty much everything you know on a

[34:26] day-to-day basis

[34:28] you know because you've conceptualized

[34:29] it.

[34:31] You know because you've interpreted it.

[34:33] You know it because you've been thinking

[34:35] it.

[34:37] What do you know that's not a thought,

[34:39] really?

[34:41] Have you ever paused

[34:43] to ponder that?

[34:46] How much

[34:47] do you know directly

[34:50] that is not a thought?

[34:56] And you will probably find it's not much

[34:58] because every experience you think

[35:00] you're having

[35:02] you think you're having.

[35:05] So our thoughts

[35:08] will refer to things and objects and

[35:09] appearances and experiences.

[35:12] And we tend to know these experiences or

[35:15] things

[35:16] through the thought about them.

[35:18] So how much do you actually directly

[35:20] know

[35:22] that's not a thought?

[35:24] What do you know that's not a thought,

[35:26] that's not thought-based?

[35:29] And do you believe that you can know

[35:31] things without thinking?

[35:33] Important question.

[35:35] Do you believe that you can know

[35:38] something?

[35:40] We'll leave that up for what it is for

[35:42] now. Anything. Do you believe you can

[35:45] know things

[35:46] without thinking?

[35:50] Most importantly, yourself.

[35:54] Do you believe that you can know

[35:55] yourself

[35:56] without thinking about yourself?

[35:59] And if you can even for a moment, you

[36:01] are directly introduced to the direct

[36:03] experience of your true self. Now it

[36:05] might be the beginning sort of

[36:09] light

[36:10] or glimpse of it.

[36:12] But nevertheless, it is a glimpse of the

[36:14] sun.

[36:15] The sun equating to the true self in

[36:17] this analogy.

[36:19] It is you catching a ray of the sun.

[36:21] When you stop thinking for just half a

[36:23] second

[36:25] and you recognize the clarity, the clear

[36:28] space almost. It's like a space of

[36:31] consciousness, a space

[36:33] of existence, a space of knowing that

[36:36] you are

[36:38] which remains when you don't think but

[36:40] you stay aware.

[36:43] And I say this because a lot of people

[36:45] when they stop thinking, they're

[36:46] actually still thinking but they're

[36:47] thinking

[36:49] about nothingness or blankness or

[36:51] they're just falling asleep.

[36:53] But can you stay awake

[36:57] after having stopped all your thoughts

[36:58] for just a split second?

[37:01] And in that split second, can you

[37:03] recognize that natural state, that

[37:05] natural space of I exist, of sentience,

[37:07] of intelligence, of that which is alive,

[37:09] which knows itself, that which knows

[37:12] that it is?

[37:14] Can you know the very fact that you are?

[37:20] And if you do this, realm will open up

[37:22] to you. This realm of consciousness will

[37:24] open up to you and it will swallow up

[37:26] over time with your permission to the

[37:28] degree that you want it to, that you're

[37:30] ready for it

[37:31] this basic space of of empty primordial

[37:35] natural wisdom, unconditional love,

[37:38] bliss, clarity

[37:39] consciousness, nirvana enlightenment

[37:43] self, the self, the true self. The

[37:45] eternal, changeless state of your

[37:47] consciousness before you assumed you

[37:49] were this body, this mind and this

[37:51] world, etc.

[37:52] There is something profound within you

[37:55] that never changes

[37:57] which you can access at any given moment

[38:01] by slowing down

[38:03] thoughts, stopping thoughts altogether

[38:05] and maintaining awareness of yourself as

[38:08] existent.

[38:10] Or by simply relaxing your allegiance or

[38:13] attachment to thoughts.

[38:15] So the thoughts might still kind of pop

[38:17] up on your screen of consciousness.

[38:19] But because you're not giving them any

[38:20] meaning or significance or importance in

[38:23] that moment

[38:25] your bandwidth opens towards this deeper

[38:28] intuitive level of consciousness

[38:31] that is already in touch

[38:32] with its natural condition.

[38:35] So that's why I say relaxation is so

[38:37] helpful, so valuable

[38:39] in the pursuit of direct experience.

[38:43] So what's spirituality?

[38:46] But the understanding that

[38:50] there is a principle which is alive that

[38:53] no scientists will ever be able to put

[38:56] in a box

[38:58] that no biologist or neurologist will

[39:00] ever ever be able to categorize.

[39:03] That there's this ingraspable

[39:05] unfathomable

[39:07] principle of intelligence, of

[39:09] intelligent existence

[39:11] of aliveness which

[39:14] perhaps does not have a form

[39:16] of its own

[39:17] yet

[39:18] still exists.

[39:20] Cannot be categorized or conceptualized

[39:23] or put in a box

[39:25] yet exists.

[39:28] Cannot be physically brought down,

[39:30] placed inside of a jar, put on a shelf

[39:33] or written down inside of a book

[39:37] yet

[39:38] it exists.

[39:40] Spirituality is the understanding, the

[39:42] conviction, the belief, and ultimately,

[39:44] ideally, the direct experience, which is

[39:46] what this entire retreat is going to

[39:48] focus itself on predominantly. Okay? Is

[39:51] to give you the tools that you need to

[39:53] directly recognize that which never

[39:56] changes so that you can merge back into

[39:58] your true self.

[40:00] Through the eye of the storm

[40:02] of this whole

[40:05] pandemic.

[40:07] To find your true self, to use this as

[40:09] an excuse, as a as a permission slip

[40:13] to recognize the truth.

[40:15] To practice the truth

[40:17] of your being, of your existence.

[40:20] So, what if there exists this principle

[40:23] of intelligence, intelligent aliveness

[40:25] of beingness, call it God if you will,

[40:27] call it source,

[40:29] call it

[40:30] the enlightened mind,

[40:32] call it pure consciousness,

[40:34] call it the great I Am,

[40:36] call it universal consciousness,

[40:40] call it boo-boo.

[40:43] Really doesn't matter. Call it Shiva,

[40:45] call it Brahman.

[40:47] It really doesn't matter. It does not

[40:49] care what name

[40:51] it gets in your mind.

[40:53] It exists regardless of name and form

[40:56] and shape and size and dimensions and

[40:58] space and time.

[41:02] But imagine again cuz some of you might

[41:03] be thinking now, why would I why would I

[41:06] want to be interested in this topic? And

[41:08] I'm not here to convince you that you

[41:09] should.

[41:10] First of all, it's up to you.

[41:13] Uh but I do want to

[41:15] kind of give it a shot. I want to

[41:17] promote it as best as I can.

[41:19] So, I will be truthful and say that

[41:23] I believe

[41:26] that not only is it imperative

[41:29] for our civilization

[41:31] and its future trajectory

[41:33] that more people around the world,

[41:35] people like you watching right now,

[41:40] prioritize,

[41:41] devote themselves to, commit themselves

[41:43] to a true and genuine direct

[41:46] experience-based spiritual practice

[41:50] that's free of dogma, that's free of

[41:51] lineage, that's free of religious

[41:53] concepts,

[41:55] direct awakening of self to self, your

[41:59] own awakening to what's true

[42:02] in the deepest levels of your being.

[42:05] Because that and that alone will solve

[42:08] all the issues on a surface level.

[42:14] My desire is to

[42:15] assist or help

[42:17] this planet be a happier version of

[42:20] itself.

[42:21] Now, there's many ways in which we can

[42:23] contribute to that.

[42:25] There's environmentalists, there's

[42:26] philanthropists, there is uh all kinds

[42:28] of charitable organizations,

[42:30] some of which are genuine.

[42:34] And

[42:37] you can go save forests, preserve

[42:40] nature,

[42:41] um

[42:43] and I recommend all these things. I

[42:44] think they're all very valuable

[42:46] pursuits.

[42:48] However,

[42:49] my the predominant focus that

[42:52] I suppose my brand, if you will, or

[42:54] organization or movement or intention

[42:57] has is

[42:59] to solve the issues at their core root

[43:02] level.

[43:04] And all the issues we've ever generated

[43:07] come from confusion, which comes from an

[43:10] non-understanding of what is true,

[43:13] of what we really are.

[43:14] So, if

[43:16] we can help

[43:18] millions of people around the world, and

[43:20] we can in today's world, we can very

[43:22] quickly, and this is one aspect of that.

[43:25] And you being here and you having shared

[43:27] this perhaps with some of your friends

[43:28] is an aspect of that paying it forward

[43:32] [snorts]

[43:32] to light the flames of millions using a

[43:35] single

[43:36] flame,

[43:37] in this case you or me,

[43:41] to spread this fire of self-awareness

[43:45] so that people get the direct tools that

[43:47] will solve automatically the issues that

[43:50] we produce as a human being in a state

[43:53] of delusion. Cuz if you solve the

[43:54] delusion, you solve all the expressions

[43:57] that come from that delusion,

[43:59] from those distortions, from those

[44:00] imbalances.

[44:08] Consciousness and our relationship to

[44:10] it, our relationship to what we are at

[44:12] the deepest level of our being

[44:17] is the solution to all of our issues,

[44:19] the quickest, most direct way, at least

[44:21] in my opinion,

[44:23] to all of our issues because when that

[44:25] is addressed,

[44:27] every single one of our expressions will

[44:29] realign to the vision that's intrinsic

[44:33] in this field in the ethers of the

[44:36] atmosphere of planet Earth, of the

[44:37] collective consciousness of humanity,

[44:39] which is the vision

[44:41] of an enlightened civilization for all

[44:44] or at least

[44:45] a happy planet.

[44:47] A planet that is vibrant, happy, alive,

[44:50] balanced, harmonious.

[44:52] A planet that understands itself and

[44:54] therefore interacts with all portions of

[44:56] itself

[44:58] and other selves, which are itself,

[45:01] in harmonious, compassionate,

[45:03] understanding, transparent, lucid ways.

[45:08] So, you can directly contribute. This is

[45:11] just one aspect that I'm addressing as

[45:12] to why should one

[45:15] even want to

[45:17] put its attention and its time into a

[45:19] direct type of practice or understanding

[45:21] like this?

[45:22] Well, one aspect of it is that I believe

[45:25] it is imperative when you look at the

[45:27] external state of our world, which is a

[45:29] manifestation, a reflection of our

[45:31] internal workings, of our relationship

[45:33] to ourselves.

[45:37] It is imperative that we make a change

[45:40] deep

[45:41] within ourselves,

[45:42] that we change the relationship, the

[45:45] clarity with which we know ourselves,

[45:48] the awareness, the responsibility, the

[45:50] freedom, the confidence, the

[45:52] empoweredness with

[45:54] which we relate to ourselves in all

[45:57] aspects of our consciousness

[45:59] as they arise within the field of our

[46:01] awareness on a day-to-day basis.

[46:04] What is our relationship like to these

[46:08] appearances, to these elements of our

[46:10] consciousness, of our psychology,

[46:12] of our spirituality,

[46:15] of our body-mind-spirit complex?

[46:20] Does that carry the quality of true

[46:22] understanding?

[46:25] Is it rooted Is it based in an

[46:26] understanding of

[46:28] this underlying

[46:30] unity field of consciousness out of

[46:32] which everything appears and manifests

[46:35] and is made possible to begin with?

[46:38] Cuz again, we would not have this

[46:39] experience.

[46:41] You can complain about this experience,

[46:42] you can praise this experience,

[46:44] but you would not be able to complain

[46:46] about this experience or praise this

[46:48] experience or think anything of it or

[46:50] even have it

[46:51] was it not for consciousness itself.

[46:58] It's a This is another pointer, another

[47:00] introduction

[47:01] to your natural state. It's the

[47:03] understanding

[47:05] that you've never had an experience

[47:07] apart from

[47:09] that which is hearing my voice

[47:12] as I speak

[47:13] right now.

[47:16] There is a quality beyond the mind,

[47:18] beyond the thinking, conceptualizing

[47:20] mind,

[47:22] that is cognizant, that is

[47:24] able to know.

[47:26] The power

[47:28] to know

[47:29] is one of the core descriptions of what

[47:31] consciousness is. It's the power to

[47:34] know. You could also say it's the the

[47:36] power to exist or be and know that you

[47:39] exist and are.

[47:42] And that power is innate in you right

[47:43] now. You can right now ignore my words

[47:46] and instead of focusing on what I say,

[47:48] you can recognize the fact that you are

[47:50] present to what I say, that you even

[47:53] exist to hear what I say.

[47:57] You notice the shift there in

[47:58] consciousness, in attention? It's a

[48:00] very, very simple change.

[48:03] You take your attention off of what you

[48:04] think and focus on.

[48:07] And you relax it for 2 to 5 seconds.

[48:09] Just give away all thoughts or at least

[48:11] all allegiance or attachment to

[48:13] thoughts. Don't invest in any of the

[48:15] thoughts.

[48:18] And recognize the natural state of

[48:20] clear, ever-present

[48:22] I Am-ness or I Am conscious, I Am aware,

[48:26] which is right now hearing my voice

[48:28] without you even trying.

[48:29] You can focus on my voice using your

[48:31] conceptualizing mind. You can make a

[48:33] description about what I'm saying, or

[48:35] you could sort of be aloof,

[48:38] kind of zoned out,

[48:39] and not really give any focused

[48:41] description of what I'm saying.

[48:43] In either condition, in both states of

[48:46] focus

[48:47] or non-focus,

[48:48] there is an awareness of my voice. You

[48:50] cannot deny that.

[48:52] You're not doing it.

[48:54] It is there, intrinsic to what you are.

[48:59] This is the basic state of your

[49:01] awareness. This is enlightenment.

[49:03] Now, it goes, {quote} "deeper than that"

[49:06] as you practice, and we'll get into sort

[49:08] of the purification

[49:10] and the

[49:11] increase in the density, in the

[49:13] brightness of this enlightenment. Okay?

[49:16] But what we first need to establish is a

[49:17] direct connection, a direct access

[49:20] point.

[49:21] What we need to establish

[49:23] is that you are not only able

[49:26] to recognize your true self,

[49:28] but that you actually know how to do

[49:30] that, that you can actually identify

[49:33] that true self

[49:36] for yourself,

[49:37] regardless of what you're thinking.

[49:40] You may not even like anything that I've

[49:41] said so far. You may not agree with

[49:42] anything I've said so far. Doesn't take

[49:45] away the fact that there's an awareness

[49:46] of my voice that you're not doing.

[49:52] And as you recognize that natural state

[49:54] of awareness which hears my voice

[49:56] without you doing it,

[49:59] you will notice an increase in clarity.

[50:01] You will notice there is a sense of

[50:03] ease. It's like a river of well-being

[50:05] begins to pour

[50:08] through the crown into the body and the

[50:09] mind.

[50:10] You start to

[50:13] get a sense of perhaps spaciousness or

[50:15] relief

[50:16] or clarity or relaxation.

[50:19] Now, those are very beginning effects of

[50:21] enlightenment. Again, think of it as a

[50:23] spectrum.

[50:25] The spectrum of

[50:27] it's a process of familiarizing

[50:30] yourself

[50:31] with that natural state which is ever

[50:33] here.

[50:35] Which hears my voice right now. The

[50:36] power to know

[50:38] that you are.

[50:41] Familiarize yourself with it. In other

[50:43] words, befriend it.

[50:46] Become friends with it. Become closer

[50:48] and closer

[50:50] in your association with it.

[50:52] That's really all it is and every human

[50:54] being on this planet can do this. And

[50:56] every human being benefits from this

[50:58] instantly. Now, it might be a little bit

[51:00] of benefit at first,

[51:02] but they compound.

[51:05] It's like compounding interest.

[51:07] Compounding benefit.

[51:10] Compound benefit.

[51:13] Through the intrinsic nature of what you

[51:15] are. Recognizing itself. Recognizing

[51:18] itself. Increasing the brightness of

[51:19] itself.

[51:20] The luminosity with which it knows

[51:22] itself. The sufficiency, the vibrancy

[51:24] with which it recognizes its natural

[51:26] state.

[51:28] And this can be begin to permeate your

[51:30] every experience to the point where you

[51:32] can no longer have You wouldn't want to,

[51:34] but you can no longer have a

[51:35] conversation with someone

[51:37] without being aware of the fact that

[51:39] you're aware.

[51:40] It just pervades the entire conversation

[51:42] without distracting you from the

[51:44] conversation per se.

[51:47] And it comes with a sense of

[51:50] it's like space itself pervading every

[51:52] cell of your body and your mind.

[51:55] But with sort of a blazing light, a

[51:57] blazing luminosity, a clarity

[52:00] of the enlightened state of your true

[52:02] self which is already the case.

[52:05] But you've covered it up with thoughts

[52:06] and ideas.

[52:08] But this is wide open. It's the wide

[52:10] open secret that's staring you right in

[52:12] the face right now.

[52:17] And it's yours, my friends. It's

[52:18] entirely 100% you.

[52:24] And the benefits compound.

[52:27] They build on each other.

[52:29] And this I can only ask you to take on

[52:32] faith.

[52:33] But the way to do that is to at least

[52:35] believe that maybe what I'm saying is

[52:37] possible for you,

[52:38] could benefit you, and compound, could

[52:41] more and more benefit you every day you

[52:43] practice.

[52:45] And if you at least have that concept

[52:46] that maybe there is an incentive or

[52:48] motivation to continue to simply expose

[52:50] yourself to these introductions,

[52:52] to these teachings,

[52:54] to where

[52:55] you can then apply that tool for

[52:57] yourself and test it out. So, you no

[52:59] longer have to keep it

[53:01] taking it on faith. You no longer have

[53:03] to trust this body

[53:05] talking.

[53:07] You can now directly know what I'm

[53:08] talking about and decide whether or not

[53:10] it's worth your while, worth your

[53:12] attention, worth your energy.

[53:15] I encourage you to try it out. That's

[53:17] about all I can do. That's about all I

[53:19] want to do. It is entirely up to you

[53:21] what you do with this information.

[53:24] But I'll continue to introduce,

[53:25] reintroduce, and remind us here together

[53:29] in these sessions

[53:30] globally during the quarantine retreat

[53:34] of this natural state and will

[53:37] abide in it together

[53:39] and will clarify the concepts about it.

[53:42] We'll make the path into recognizing and

[53:45] abiding in it easier and easier

[53:48] by dismantling any ideas that we have

[53:50] about it

[53:51] through your Q&A also during these

[53:53] sessions, your questions which I will do

[53:56] my best to answer.

[53:58] And through these guided meditations and

[54:00] these guided talks cuz really every time

[54:02] I talk, for the most part, it is kind of

[54:04] like a guided meditation. That's the way

[54:06] it is.

[54:07] Comes through. It's set up that way if

[54:09] you will. The intelligence behind it

[54:12] provides it as a guided contemplative

[54:15] monologue.

[54:16] So, simply by listening to the

[54:18] information,

[54:19] your attention gets to discover more and

[54:21] more of its natural state, its freedom,

[54:24] its power.

[54:30] So,

[54:32] enlightenment exists.

[54:34] It's possible for any human being to

[54:37] become more enlightened or awake or

[54:39] self-realized.

[54:41] And not only for every human being,

[54:43] specifically you

[54:45] can identify the true self and be able

[54:48] to discern the true self from the not

[54:50] true self.

[54:51] And this is very helpful.

[54:53] And we'll get deeper into that

[54:54] distinction, to that science.

[54:57] Cuz that will really help you to get

[55:00] more

[55:01] clear, direct recognition of what you

[55:03] are and for it to really

[55:06] really transform your consciousness,

[55:08] your sense of identity, to really free

[55:09] you

[55:10] from the limitations that you believe

[55:12] are real today.

[55:15] Is by going through the distinctions of

[55:17] what is the true self, what's not the

[55:19] true self. So, you can clearly recognize

[55:22] that

[55:24] intangible yet

[55:27] so vividly here

[55:29] quality

[55:30] of that which is alive, which is not a

[55:32] form, which is not a body, which is not

[55:33] a mind, which is not a concept, which is

[55:35] not a

[55:36] an object.

[55:39] It's not even a subject per se, although

[55:41] that's our entrance point typically.

[55:43] It's the sense of

[55:45] us as the subject of our lives.

[55:48] But it goes beyond that.

[55:51] And again, people have called it God.

[55:52] People have called it

[55:56] the Buddha mind, Buddha nature. People

[55:58] have called it Christ consciousness.

[56:02] People have called it Brahman.

[56:05] People have called it nirvana.

[56:08] People have called it heaven.

[56:11] The irony is you're already there now

[56:15] looking at this conversation from

[56:17] heaven.

[56:21] And this dialogue is here solely for the

[56:24] purpose of helping you

[56:26] see that again.

[56:29] You have everything you

[56:31] could ever want for

[56:33] and more than you can even imagine.

[56:36] This is not a false promise.

[56:38] It requires practice and recognition and

[56:40] commitment

[56:41] because this universe is based on free

[56:43] will. Whatever you will, whatever you

[56:45] want, whatever you invest yourself into,

[56:48] you will get that realization or that

[56:50] outcome or that manifestation

[56:52] eventually in one shape, one

[56:55] way, shape, or form. In some way, shape,

[56:56] or form. Similarly with enlightenment,

[56:59] it is

[57:00] the result of your free will.

[57:03] If you don't want it,

[57:05] then you're going to kind of struggle

[57:06] with the concept of it. But if you want

[57:08] it, the more you want it, the more all

[57:10] the perceived obstacles

[57:12] are rendered irrelevant and empty.

[57:14] They're neutralized.

[57:16] The stronger your desire for knowing the

[57:19] truth of your own consciousness which is

[57:21] not a form, it's not a particular

[57:23] experience.

[57:25] It's not this

[57:27] or that sensation or this thought or

[57:29] that thought. It's much deeper than

[57:32] being this or that. It's eternal. It It

[57:34] shines through these clouds of

[57:36] experiences like like the sun and the

[57:39] sky pervade the clouds.

[57:42] The self, the natural self is like

[57:46] sky.

[57:47] Like space.

[57:49] Filled with self-luminous sunlight.

[57:54] Don't mean to sound too woo-woo, but

[57:56] it's it's very much like that.

[58:01] And it's here. It's available. It's

[58:03] speaking to you

[58:05] and you're listening from it.

[58:08] It's that which knows whatever you're

[58:09] thinking right now.

[58:12] Turn your attention back onto awareness

[58:14] itself.

[58:16] Back onto the fact that you know that

[58:19] you exist.

[58:21] Become aware of the fact that you know

[58:24] that you are.

[58:27] And notice the experiential shift in

[58:29] attention

[58:30] and the result that that brings about

[58:32] already even doing it for a second or

[58:34] two.

[58:36] Can you imagine abiding in that, resting

[58:38] in that, making it brighter, making it

[58:39] so crystal clear, so self-confident?

[58:43] It will swallow up your delusions, your

[58:45] confusions. It will replace your fears,

[58:48] your confusions

[58:50] with this blazing light of bliss

[58:52] and freedom and clarity and

[58:54] skillfulness.

[58:55] It won't make you ungrounded per se.

[58:58] It won't make you unrelatable per se.

[59:00] No, you'll have a completely different

[59:02] experience of what you are than most

[59:04] people have of what they are.

[59:06] But it doesn't inhibit you. It doesn't

[59:08] stop you

[59:09] from relating to them, being with them,

[59:12] playing with them, engaging with them,

[59:14] dialoguing with them, being of service

[59:16] to them, interacting with them, learning

[59:18] from them, teaching them.

[59:22] That will all maintain itself. Your

[59:24] ability to blend in as you currently

[59:27] already are doing anyway.

[59:29] It'll just become a conscious thing.

[59:38] So, I will finalize this sort of guided

[59:41] talk

[59:45] by making a distinction

[59:47] that is easy to remember for you going

[59:49] forward until we have our next session

[59:51] on Wednesday.

[59:56] Um and we'll have some Q&A after this,

[59:58] by the way, for maybe uh 20-30 minutes.

[1:00:00] We'll do some Q&A.

[1:00:05] But before the Q&A, I just want to

[1:00:06] finalize my um

[1:00:09] I suppose my lecture

[1:00:11] aspect of this uh

[1:00:13] communion with you

[1:00:17] by

[1:00:18] pointing you to the distinction

[1:00:21] between awareness

[1:00:23] or that which knows my voice right now,

[1:00:25] that quality which is not a thing, but

[1:00:27] it's so evidently here.

[1:00:30] This inescapable

[1:00:32] presence or awareness.

[1:00:34] I I want to make a distinction for you

[1:00:36] in your mind, in your thinking, in your

[1:00:38] intellectual framework

[1:00:40] between that quality which is not

[1:00:43] a concept. It's the quality of existence

[1:00:46] being aware

[1:00:49] and

[1:00:50] everything else

[1:00:52] that is known.

[1:00:54] And let's call everything else that is

[1:00:56] known

[1:00:58] I call it by different names, but the

[1:01:00] most liberating way to see it typically

[1:01:02] is to see them as appearances.

[1:01:05] So, what is an appearance? An appearance

[1:01:07] literally is anything that has a

[1:01:08] beginning, middle, and an end.

[1:01:11] Anything that can be experienced like

[1:01:13] like an like you'd experience an object

[1:01:15] object.

[1:01:16] But your thought is also like an object.

[1:01:18] It has a property like an object. You

[1:01:19] can observe it. It appears. It seems to

[1:01:22] be there for a while and then it

[1:01:23] disappears.

[1:01:25] Just like physical objects, just like

[1:01:27] environments, even like mountains and

[1:01:29] planets.

[1:01:32] So, appearance An appearance is anything

[1:01:35] that you experience, that you are aware

[1:01:38] of.

[1:01:40] Anything that you can be aware of

[1:01:43] subject object, any object basically,

[1:01:47] object of attention.

[1:01:49] Any perception you could say also

[1:01:53] is an appearance. And by calling it an

[1:01:56] appearance, you already

[1:01:58] highlight or emphasize

[1:02:01] its

[1:02:02] temporary nature because you're saying

[1:02:03] it's appearing. It's not the It's not

[1:02:06] the ultimate truth because the ultimate

[1:02:08] truth cannot suddenly appear one day. It

[1:02:11] wouldn't be ultimate truth.

[1:02:13] So, the ultimate truth of what you are

[1:02:15] cannot be anything that you're aware of.

[1:02:18] It cannot appear.

[1:02:19] It must be there all the time.

[1:02:22] And that's exactly, my friends, why it

[1:02:24] has gone unnoticed for most of you.

[1:02:27] Because it's been there all the time.

[1:02:29] It's there now. That which hears my

[1:02:30] voice right now also was hearing my

[1:02:32] voice 20 minutes ago and 40 minutes ago.

[1:02:36] And 5 years ago, it was looking in the

[1:02:38] mirror

[1:02:39] knowing that it exists, existing.

[1:02:42] You see

[1:02:43] that's why we don't recognize the object

[1:02:45] of God itself, existence itself.

[1:02:48] We instead recognize all the other

[1:02:50] objects or appearances.

[1:02:52] But the substratum of all appearances

[1:02:55] the constant denominator

[1:02:57] the consistent, pervasive self

[1:03:01] we fail to notice because we're so

[1:03:03] distracted with this or that, this or

[1:03:05] that, this or that.

[1:03:07] Remember, I'm introducing you to very

[1:03:09] high direct level teachings here in as

[1:03:12] simple a way as I can at this moment.

[1:03:15] This is not your everyday spiritual,

[1:03:18] conceptual, incense-based

[1:03:21] let's walk around the hill together

[1:03:23] and then cuddle and sing Kumbaya kind of

[1:03:25] spirituality.

[1:03:27] No offense, by the way. I know I made

[1:03:29] that sound kind of offensive, but

[1:03:31] that's not the intention.

[1:03:32] Um but this is different. You have to

[1:03:34] understand this is a direct

[1:03:36] transformation applied to your

[1:03:37] consciousness at the deepest level.

[1:03:40] I'm making it sound

[1:03:43] accessible and it is. That's the whole

[1:03:46] point. Your What you are is accessible

[1:03:48] all the time.

[1:03:51] But I'm saying this to give you perhaps

[1:03:53] a sense of respect for the practice and

[1:03:55] the material.

[1:03:56] That you really understand that this is

[1:03:58] something that's direct kind of

[1:04:00] introduction is something you would

[1:04:01] typically only get after hardship, after

[1:04:03] proving yourself in sort of secluded

[1:04:05] types of

[1:04:07] meditative communities.

[1:04:09] And you'd have to go through lineage

[1:04:10] things and all that, ceremonies and

[1:04:13] rites of passage and

[1:04:15] I want you to understand and respect for

[1:04:18] your own sake, not for me. I want you to

[1:04:20] understand and respect

[1:04:23] the nature of this material as being

[1:04:25] highly transformative.

[1:04:27] Right? So, we're going on a journey

[1:04:29] together here

[1:04:31] that will transform your sense of self.

[1:04:35] If you continue to be introduced to

[1:04:36] these teachings, I promise you

[1:04:40] your pain will turn into bliss.

[1:04:43] Your delusions, your projections, your

[1:04:46] concepts will turn into clear direct

[1:04:48] knowledge of who you are.

[1:04:52] You will

[1:04:53] achieve the liberation that you're

[1:04:54] currently trying to find through objects

[1:04:56] and attainments and achievements.

[1:04:59] But it is a profound change in

[1:05:01] consciousness. And yes, it can be taken

[1:05:03] one step at a time. And it can be taken

[1:05:05] at your own pace. And there's no way to

[1:05:07] take it beyond your own pace anyway. You

[1:05:08] are protected in that sense from

[1:05:10] yourself.

[1:05:12] But

[1:05:14] to make you understand that

[1:05:17] this is a profound transformation that

[1:05:20] if you apply yourself to it, it's not

[1:05:22] just a brief recognition. It's not just

[1:05:27] relaxing the body and the mind. That's

[1:05:29] all great. But this goes deeper. I just

[1:05:31] want you to know that. I just want you

[1:05:33] to understand that. Full disclosure,

[1:05:35] this is a profound

[1:05:37] transformation of your very sense of

[1:05:39] self, your sense of being. And you will

[1:05:41] take it at your own pace.

[1:05:43] And I invite you, I encourage you

[1:05:46] to continue to expose yourself

[1:05:48] to this introduction and to practice the

[1:05:50] tools that you extract from these

[1:05:51] sessions

[1:05:53] and to support each other.

[1:05:55] Uh maybe go to like the Facebook group,

[1:05:57] the Bentinho Massaro's Teaching and

[1:05:58] Community or maybe we'll be able to set

[1:06:00] up some type of a group somewhere on

[1:06:02] some platform for this purpose.

[1:06:05] Uh for now, I suppose you can go to

[1:06:06] Bentinho Massaro's Teaching and

[1:06:08] Community

[1:06:09] on Facebook if you have a Facebook

[1:06:10] account still.

[1:06:12] Um

[1:06:16] So,

[1:06:17] anyway, support each other. Like get

[1:06:19] together, find like-minded people who

[1:06:21] are also in the process of recognizing

[1:06:24] the difference between appearances or

[1:06:26] perceptions and a true self and who are

[1:06:29] committed to resting, abiding in that

[1:06:31] true self recognition and allowing their

[1:06:33] delusions to be

[1:06:35] made transparent and to be resolved by

[1:06:37] this natural

[1:06:39] primordial wisdom of self, which is

[1:06:41] accessible to you. And again, the

[1:06:43] benefits compound.

[1:06:46] But it does take some attention.

[1:06:48] It does take some appreciation

[1:06:50] of what it actually entails.

[1:06:53] It's a deeply transformative process of

[1:06:56] consciousness waking up to itself,

[1:06:58] waking up from the dream of appearances

[1:07:00] and thoughts and concepts.

[1:07:02] And this is a gradual process for most.

[1:07:03] That's why it's okay.

[1:07:05] You don't have to worry too much about

[1:07:06] where it will lead you to cuz at any

[1:07:08] stage of the game, you can decide to

[1:07:10] pause it or stop it or continue more

[1:07:14] depending on your level of desire for

[1:07:16] more clarity, for more bliss, for more

[1:07:18] liberation, for more unconditional love,

[1:07:19] for more blazing light into the

[1:07:22] wide open blue sky of consciousness.

[1:07:27] How much do you desire to feel at one

[1:07:30] with the creator, the infinite, with

[1:07:31] God, if you will?

[1:07:40] So,

[1:07:41] there's awareness and there's

[1:07:43] appearances.

[1:07:44] You could also say there's consciousness

[1:07:46] and there is the contents of

[1:07:47] consciousness.

[1:07:49] Or in a sort of faulty way, you could

[1:07:51] say there is the subject and there's the

[1:07:53] objects of which the subject is

[1:07:55] conscious.

[1:07:59] Sort of faulty because the subject

[1:08:00] really is produced by object-based

[1:08:02] consciousness. When objects disappear or

[1:08:05] the focus on objects disappear or the

[1:08:07] thoughts stop for 2 seconds

[1:08:09] what's revealed is this natural state

[1:08:11] which doesn't have a subject or object.

[1:08:13] It's just sort of this unified isness.

[1:08:16] This unity self. This unity

[1:08:18] consciousness. This non-local,

[1:08:21] space-time transcending natural state

[1:08:23] which is

[1:08:24] like formless space pervaded by a

[1:08:27] blazing light of the sun.

[1:08:29] Clear, luminous, free, vibrant, alive.

[1:08:34] So, everything that comes up, thoughts

[1:08:36] are appearances. They appear.

[1:08:38] But they appear to what you are, to the

[1:08:41] consciousness that's right now aware of

[1:08:42] my voice. Me speaking is an appearance.

[1:08:46] You're aware of that appearance.

[1:08:48] Therefore, you can also be aware of the

[1:08:50] fact that you're aware

[1:08:53] of the appearance.

[1:08:54] And therein lies that change. That's the

[1:08:57] direct introduction to the natural state

[1:09:00] of ever-present, timeless awareness.

[1:09:03] The recognition that you're aware of

[1:09:05] appearances and that to turn your

[1:09:07] attention 180°

[1:09:09] back onto that awareness itself.

[1:09:12] Which is kind of like a background, the

[1:09:14] background of awareness, the background

[1:09:16] of ever-present consciousness.

[1:09:18] This, my friends, is enlightenment. It's

[1:09:20] that simple

[1:09:21] and that profound

[1:09:24] all at the same time.

[1:09:26] And being introduced to it over and over

[1:09:28] again for most people seems necessary.

[1:09:31] And builds momentum. It builds clarity.

[1:09:34] It builds luminosity. It builds freedom.

[1:09:36] And you'll become more and more free,

[1:09:38] more and more like the sky.

[1:09:40] Less and less obstructed by your

[1:09:41] thoughts and emotions. Less and less

[1:09:43] bogged down by the confusions of other

[1:09:45] people

[1:09:46] and your own thinking.

[1:09:48] Freedom.

[1:09:49] Do you want freedom?

[1:09:50] The truth is liberating. But again,

[1:09:53] first it might piss some of you off.

[1:09:55] Some components of you

[1:09:57] might be pissed off. But truth will set

[1:09:59] you free.

[1:10:02] So,

[1:10:03] we'll take a short 10-minute break.

[1:10:05] Um so, stay tuned in if you're still

[1:10:07] interested.

[1:10:09] And um

[1:10:10] then we'll come back with uh some

[1:10:13] questions and answers. So, thank you for

[1:10:16] submitting some of your questions in the

[1:10:18] comment sections of YouTube and

[1:10:20] Facebook.

[1:10:21] Appreciate it and we will select a few

[1:10:24] of these

[1:10:25] and uh present them to you in about 10

[1:10:27] minutes from now.

[1:10:29] I want to

[1:10:31] give a big heartfelt thank you on behalf

[1:10:32] of our entire team for the donations

[1:10:35] that we have received um prior to the

[1:10:38] session.

[1:10:39] We very much appreciate it and it's very

[1:10:41] helpful for us as well. So, thank you

[1:10:43] for that.

[1:10:44] Thank you for your attention span.

[1:10:46] And uh I hope to see, in case you're

[1:10:48] signing off, I hope to see you again on

[1:10:50] Wednesday. But again, stay tuned because

[1:10:52] sometimes the Q&As can be the most

[1:10:54] clarifying um components of a session.

[1:10:58] So, I encourage you to stick around.

[1:11:00] Um it's not like you have anything

[1:11:01] better to do anyway, right?

[1:11:04] See you in a bit.

[1:11:16] Are we on?

[1:11:17] Good. Okay. Hey, welcome back, guys.

[1:11:20] So, uh my team selected some questions.

[1:11:24] And I'll um

[1:11:26] I'll read some of these.

[1:11:30] Getting to the This is by Ben.

[1:11:34] Getting to the root of my experience

[1:11:37] and not falling into endless thought and

[1:11:39] projection streams

[1:11:42] takes such intense focus.

[1:11:44] I wonder, do you advise holding that

[1:11:47] level of total focus consistently 24/7?

[1:11:52] Again, I really encourage you to see

[1:11:54] this as a spectrum, not as a black or a

[1:11:56] white thing. Not as a right or wrong

[1:11:58] thing, either.

[1:12:00] So,

[1:12:01] rather than thinking of it in terms of

[1:12:04] should I hold that level of focus and

[1:12:06] when I don't hold that level of focus,

[1:12:08] then I'm not free.

[1:12:10] Um there's an even more direct path, if

[1:12:12] you will, than holding your focus on it.

[1:12:15] Although, yes, that is a direct path as

[1:12:17] well.

[1:12:18] To as much as you can, abide in that.

[1:12:23] But another component

[1:12:25] of liberating yourself from these

[1:12:27] thought streams

[1:12:29] is not to try to push them away or to

[1:12:32] focus away from them

[1:12:34] necessarily. I mean, you can.

[1:12:36] But

[1:12:37] rather, it's to understand that the

[1:12:40] nature

[1:12:41] of what you are is already unobstructed.

[1:12:44] Is already inescapably here.

[1:12:47] And is already

[1:12:49] ever present and established.

[1:12:52] I often say that which you are is always

[1:12:54] already free. You are always already

[1:12:56] free.

[1:12:57] So, even the assumption that you

[1:13:01] get lost

[1:13:03] in um

[1:13:05] thought and projection streams

[1:13:08] that also is an assumption cuz you

[1:13:09] actually don't get lost in the thought

[1:13:11] and projection streams.

[1:13:13] It's just more thoughts and projection

[1:13:15] streams about the thoughts and

[1:13:16] projection streams. But what you are is

[1:13:18] always already free and available. It's

[1:13:20] right here, right now.

[1:13:22] And you can use the thoughts and

[1:13:23] projection streams to recognize

[1:13:26] that

[1:13:27] the background of awareness is

[1:13:29] unaffected. That this primordial empty

[1:13:31] space of luminous awareness, of

[1:13:34] intrinsic primordial freedom, is already

[1:13:36] here.

[1:13:38] And so, you build conviction, you see.

[1:13:41] It's about developing conviction,

[1:13:43] confidence, familiarity and confidence

[1:13:46] in that

[1:13:48] wide open

[1:13:50] presence of what's hearing my voice.

[1:13:53] So that the appearances inside of that

[1:13:56] space can just be allowed to sort of be

[1:13:58] as they are, even if they're raging from

[1:14:00] time to time or if there's afflictive

[1:14:03] states or uh

[1:14:04] dense emotional experiences.

[1:14:07] To shift your attention

[1:14:10] away from your description and I

[1:14:12] ideas of what is appearing.

[1:14:16] And instead of being focused through the

[1:14:18] narrow tunnel of describing your

[1:14:20] experience, you simply refrain from

[1:14:23] description altogether.

[1:14:25] And you reintroduce yourself. You

[1:14:27] remember

[1:14:30] that which is already looking through

[1:14:31] your eyes. That which is already aware

[1:14:33] of the whole charade, of the whole game

[1:14:36] of all the shenanigans of your mind

[1:14:40] and conditioning.

[1:14:42] So then, you get to actually rest in the

[1:14:44] natural state while the thought and

[1:14:46] projection streams may or may not be

[1:14:49] going on. And then you're building,

[1:14:51] you're developing true confidence in the

[1:14:53] freedom that's already here. The more

[1:14:55] confident you are in the fact that

[1:14:56] you're already free, the less you will

[1:14:58] be absorbed into thought and projection

[1:15:01] streams. The less you'll be identified

[1:15:03] with the thought and projection streams.

[1:15:05] The more natural you will maintain that

[1:15:07] and the less intense focus it requires.

[1:15:10] It becomes easier and easier.

[1:15:12] But yes, it requires some discipline to

[1:15:15] cut the stories at their root.

[1:15:17] Meaning to not indulge, to not give in

[1:15:19] to the descriptions you have, the

[1:15:21] assumptions you have about what's

[1:15:23] appearing and just to let it be exactly

[1:15:26] as it is. Let it be free. Let it run

[1:15:28] wild. Let it do its thing, unless it's

[1:15:31] harming someone else.

[1:15:32] But anything other than that, just allow

[1:15:34] your experience to be as it is.

[1:15:36] And then rest in the root of it. Rest in

[1:15:39] the background of awareness. Rest in the

[1:15:40] confidence that you're already free. And

[1:15:42] then you begin to see,

[1:15:44] you know, your seeing will follow your

[1:15:46] confidence. And confidence will follow

[1:15:48] direct seeing. But it works both ways.

[1:15:51] The more you choose that confidence of

[1:15:53] I'm already free. This is already just

[1:15:56] appearing. That's why I like the word

[1:15:58] appearances

[1:15:59] for experiences and perceptions and

[1:16:02] things.

[1:16:03] Everything is an appearance because the

[1:16:05] appearances

[1:16:07] are just appearing and disappearing,

[1:16:08] appearing and disappearing. They already

[1:16:10] don't affect what I am. The more

[1:16:12] confident you are in that, the more

[1:16:14] direct seeing of it you will receive or

[1:16:17] glimpse.

[1:16:18] Which will then further your confidence.

[1:16:20] And then it's just like this confidence

[1:16:22] and stable freedom that just pervades

[1:16:24] all your experiences, even while the

[1:16:26] body and the mind are suffering or going

[1:16:28] through a challenge.

[1:16:29] It doesn't

[1:16:31] carry the same identity anymore. It

[1:16:34] doesn't carry the same definition

[1:16:35] anymore. It is now free to also to

[1:16:38] suffer. Yeah. So,

[1:16:41] but

[1:16:42] um so, it's not a denial of anything,

[1:16:44] you see. It's an allowance of everything

[1:16:45] exactly as it is and a shift in

[1:16:47] identity, a shift in what you identify

[1:16:49] with and a shift in confidence from

[1:16:52] believing you're limited and lacking to

[1:16:54] knowing your freedom, your abundance,

[1:16:56] your power, your indestructibility.

[1:16:58] And that will set you free. That is what

[1:17:00] liberates all these perceptions that

[1:17:02] you're having, even without changing any

[1:17:04] of them, per se. And yes, over time

[1:17:07] your thought streams and projections,

[1:17:09] they will unwind. They will calm down.

[1:17:12] They will slow down. It's just over time

[1:17:13] with practice.

[1:17:15] But don't judge that just because you're

[1:17:16] having a thought or projection stream,

[1:17:18] you're not enlightened anymore.

[1:17:20] Also, don't claim that you are

[1:17:22] enlightened cuz that's just another

[1:17:23] identity booster. But your natural state

[1:17:25] is already free and enlightened. You

[1:17:27] want to adjust to that

[1:17:29] by focusing, yes, by disciplined

[1:17:32] application of turning your attention

[1:17:35] back onto that awareness.

[1:17:37] And then gaining confidence in the

[1:17:39] freedom and the ever-present nature of

[1:17:42] this awareness, of this

[1:17:44] space-like formlessness.

[1:17:47] Mhm. Freedom. [clears throat] This

[1:17:48] quality which is hearing my voice right

[1:17:50] now that cannot be grasped. That's

[1:17:53] always free, always there, always

[1:17:54] changes, always stable, always yours.

[1:17:59] And it's never affected. It is also

[1:18:01] called the I am, that pure true

[1:18:03] beingness within you. And none of the

[1:18:05] appearances, none of your experiences

[1:18:07] have ever been able to enter or

[1:18:08] penetrate or s- make a dent or scratch

[1:18:12] in the service of that I amness. It is

[1:18:14] stainless freedom. It is stainless

[1:18:17] self-perpetuating

[1:18:19] self-luminous.

[1:18:21] Call it what you will. Divinity,

[1:18:23] godness, isness. It's a right here and

[1:18:25] it goes unnoticed by the human mind so

[1:18:28] often. So, it's a process of

[1:18:30] remembering, of recognizing and

[1:18:31] identifying it.

[1:18:33] And then, yes, placing your attention in

[1:18:36] that recognition so that you may have

[1:18:38] realizations of exactly how free and

[1:18:40] unaffected you already are.

[1:18:42] And then you can choose to be more and

[1:18:43] more confident in that truth, in that

[1:18:46] law, if you will. And that will

[1:18:48] transform your personal experience, even

[1:18:50] while you still have a lot of thought

[1:18:51] and projection streams going on.

[1:18:54] Hope this is helpful.

[1:18:58] Hey, let's see.

[1:19:06] Will there be a recorded version? I'm

[1:19:08] very sorry I missed the first one. Uh

[1:19:11] Janine on Facebook. Yes, there will be a

[1:19:13] recorded version.

[1:19:17] Nishi, shall I stop my yoga and

[1:19:20] meditation for a month for complete

[1:19:22] undiverted attention for self

[1:19:23] realization. I mean that would sound

[1:19:26] that would sound delicious to me

[1:19:27] personally, but it's entirely up to you.

[1:19:30] Um

[1:19:31] but I would say use this quarantine in

[1:19:34] as effective self-devoted way as you

[1:19:37] can. Meaning be devoted to the truth

[1:19:39] within yourself.

[1:19:40] You're not expected to go out right now

[1:19:42] and like help people do things, go to

[1:19:43] your job and so why not use this time?

[1:19:46] It's such a precious moment these few

[1:19:48] months that we have here

[1:19:50] to really dive in and to really give

[1:19:52] yourself that gift.

[1:19:54] Cuz you may never give it to yourself

[1:19:55] again in this way.

[1:19:57] So

[1:19:58] um

[1:19:59] but you don't have to quit your yoga and

[1:20:01] meditation necessarily because it's not

[1:20:03] about quitting anything rather than it

[1:20:05] is about devoting yourself to this

[1:20:06] recognition.

[1:20:08] So while you're practicing yoga and

[1:20:10] meditation, you can apply the

[1:20:11] recognition of this space-like

[1:20:13] background of awareness and just become

[1:20:15] familiar with it and start to taste its

[1:20:18] freedom.

[1:20:19] And start to see that appearances don't

[1:20:21] affect it and continue that practice.

[1:20:34] From Rica,

[1:20:36] "What can I do to stay in alignment more

[1:20:38] often?

[1:20:40] I feel that when I am by myself, it is

[1:20:42] not a problem.

[1:20:44] But while interacting with others

[1:20:46] when they are not in alignment, it is.

[1:20:49] Thank you."

[1:20:50] Well,

[1:20:54] a one suggestion could simply be

[1:20:57] to not interact too much with others.

[1:21:01] If you notice it's getting past a

[1:21:03] certain threshold of what you can handle

[1:21:05] consciously by staying in your own

[1:21:07] alignment, there's no issue with taking

[1:21:10] space for yourself. It is actually quite

[1:21:12] crucial to do that from time to time.

[1:21:15] Now of course you don't want to

[1:21:17] go to the extreme of just kind of

[1:21:20] copping out and retreating when it's a

[1:21:21] wonderful opportunity for you to be of

[1:21:23] service to other people and to train

[1:21:25] your own alignment in the midst of being

[1:21:27] surrounded with other people.

[1:21:30] Then all I can say is that with

[1:21:31] practice, with realignment, with

[1:21:33] realignment, with realignment, with

[1:21:34] realignment, you just develop a thicker

[1:21:37] skin if you will. Doesn't mean you

[1:21:39] become less sensitive, you become more

[1:21:41] sensitive.

[1:21:42] But at the same time you develop more

[1:21:45] perseverance, um not quite the right

[1:21:47] word, more clarity, more resourcefulness

[1:21:50] because your connection to your own

[1:21:52] alignment

[1:21:53] is now this source of energy, this

[1:21:55] source of well-being.

[1:21:56] And so it becomes more and more

[1:21:58] difficult to be depleted by other people

[1:22:02] and it's easier and easier to stay in

[1:22:03] alignment for yourself.

[1:22:05] So

[1:22:07] and also that being said though, take

[1:22:09] moments to yourself definitely like

[1:22:11] every day take short moments to yourself

[1:22:13] and every week take a longer moment to

[1:22:15] yourself, a longer period of time.

[1:22:18] Whatever works for you.

[1:22:20] Um it's just practice uh

[1:22:22] sweet friends, it's just practice.

[1:22:24] Practice makes perfect. Recognize the

[1:22:26] fact that you're already unaffected even

[1:22:28] when you feel affected.

[1:22:30] Feelings of being affected are also

[1:22:32] appearing inside of awareness.

[1:22:34] Inside of the space-like consciousness

[1:22:35] that hears my voice right now.

[1:22:37] My voice is not scratching your

[1:22:39] awareness. It's not leaving a dent. It's

[1:22:41] not leaving a mark. And you in the body

[1:22:44] and the mind and the energy body feeling

[1:22:46] affected and overwhelmed and out of

[1:22:48] alignment also doesn't put a dent in

[1:22:51] your awareness. Also doesn't scratch or

[1:22:54] leave a mark on awareness. It is

[1:22:55] stainless, ever-present, already

[1:22:58] freedomness freedom.

[1:23:00] So begin to gain so much confidence in

[1:23:02] that that you can even allow your body

[1:23:04] to be overwhelmed, to even allow your

[1:23:06] mind to go out of alignment without you

[1:23:08] actually losing sight of the true

[1:23:10] underlying

[1:23:12] space-like freedom or background of that

[1:23:15] which exists, that which is you. And

[1:23:17] then you're able to recognize that and

[1:23:19] bring that forth and again it begins to

[1:23:21] permeate pervade like this blazing light

[1:23:23] that just cuts through all the clouds.

[1:23:26] And then you are alignment even if your

[1:23:28] body or your mind gets kind of swung

[1:23:30] around from time to time between this

[1:23:32] perception, that perception, being of

[1:23:33] service over here, being needed over

[1:23:36] there and then trying to find some rest

[1:23:37] for itself and that's just part of the

[1:23:39] plate to some degree. Um

[1:23:42] Whatever, let it be. Like don't define

[1:23:45] that in a significant way. Like that

[1:23:46] doesn't mean you're not free. That

[1:23:48] doesn't mean you're not happy. That

[1:23:50] doesn't mean you are not ultimately at

[1:23:52] the root of who you are completely 100%

[1:23:54] aligned.

[1:23:55] And you can develop that recognition of

[1:23:57] your 100% alignment even when every

[1:24:00] other portion of you appears

[1:24:03] to be out of alignment. You are still

[1:24:05] aligned. That which notices misalignment

[1:24:08] is fully aligned. That which notices

[1:24:10] feelings of separation is not separate

[1:24:12] from itself.

[1:24:13] That which feels chaotic is totally

[1:24:16] clear.

[1:24:17] That which recognizes confusion is

[1:24:19] totally not confused.

[1:24:22] Develop that confidence and that will

[1:24:24] help you transcend whatever appears

[1:24:27] without having to push anything away,

[1:24:28] avoid anything, suppress anything,

[1:24:30] change anything, fix anything.

[1:24:32] It just is the natural allowance of

[1:24:34] appearances as they arise and you're

[1:24:36] naturally

[1:24:37] staying rooted in the recognition of

[1:24:39] what's pervading them, this clarity.

[1:25:03] By Nora, "It may be an unpopular

[1:25:05] question, but do you lose the ability to

[1:25:08] be in love with someone in the romantic

[1:25:10] way after {quote} achieving

[1:25:13] enlightenment?"

[1:25:16] It it is not a popular question

[1:25:18] typically, yes.

[1:25:20] Um and it can scare some people away

[1:25:22] from the pursuit of it.

[1:25:25] But

[1:25:27] it

[1:25:29] it is my experience that

[1:25:33] you do

[1:25:34] gradually lose the ability

[1:25:37] to

[1:25:38] fall in love with someone in the

[1:25:40] romantic way. Now

[1:25:43] that being said

[1:25:45] um it's out of free will, it's out of

[1:25:47] choice.

[1:25:49] Because

[1:25:51] the nature of your recognition of self,

[1:25:53] of the true foundation of unconditional

[1:25:55] love, you simply

[1:25:57] stop choosing anything that doesn't

[1:25:59] match unconditional love.

[1:26:01] And romantic love does not equal

[1:26:04] unconditional love. Falling in love has

[1:26:07] nothing to do with unconditional love

[1:26:10] typically.

[1:26:11] We want to believe it that way, but it

[1:26:14] it's just typically not the case. In

[1:26:16] fact, you could say the whole premise of

[1:26:17] it is not is not based in unconditional

[1:26:20] love.

[1:26:21] So

[1:26:23] it's like you've already fallen in love.

[1:26:25] You fallen in love so deeply, you've

[1:26:27] already found the one.

[1:26:29] And so everything

[1:26:31] else that appears as an opportunity for

[1:26:33] relating

[1:26:35] just becomes an opportunity for sort of

[1:26:37] a relative level exchange of energy, of

[1:26:40] knowledge, of lessons, of

[1:26:43] of projects, of co-creating things, of

[1:26:45] just friendship and fun and adventure,

[1:26:48] whatever it may be.

[1:26:50] But that doesn't you don't fall in love,

[1:26:53] you see.

[1:26:55] Uh because you've already fallen back

[1:26:56] into the true self. You've already

[1:26:58] fallen back into true love.

[1:27:01] And from the perspective of true love,

[1:27:02] you see very clearly through the

[1:27:04] illusions and the delusions and the

[1:27:06] manipulations of what we call

[1:27:08] romantically falling in love.

[1:27:10] And it you just can't. Like you just

[1:27:13] look at it.

[1:27:15] You just see it from unconditional love

[1:27:17] and you can't you can't indulge your

[1:27:20] participate in something that just seems

[1:27:22] so nonsensical to you.

[1:27:24] That just seems so not true.

[1:27:27] Um

[1:27:28] doesn't mean there's not a an amazing

[1:27:30] amount of love that can be shared with

[1:27:32] people

[1:27:33] and in some cases specifically with one

[1:27:36] person or in a certain way with one

[1:27:38] particular entity. That's still a

[1:27:40] possibility.

[1:27:42] But you're not falling in love, you see,

[1:27:45] because

[1:27:46] because this which this blazing light

[1:27:49] which pervades like the background

[1:27:50] that's outshining the foreground of

[1:27:52] appearances is so filled with love. It's

[1:27:55] that which you seek in romantic love.

[1:27:57] It's already there.

[1:27:59] That's why I say at first we only

[1:28:01] recognize we only get a glimpse of the

[1:28:02] benefit, but it compounds it compounds.

[1:28:04] You won't want to fall in love anymore

[1:28:07] in the typical sense. You won't be able

[1:28:09] to because you won't want to. That's why

[1:28:11] you won't be able to. It's because you

[1:28:12] have something so much higher and better

[1:28:14] and more unconditionally loving

[1:28:17] than romantic love stories.

[1:28:19] So it doesn't mean you can't be fully

[1:28:21] there for someone and you can't allow

[1:28:23] for

[1:28:24] a journey of {quote} falling in love or

[1:28:27] a journey of

[1:28:29] of the appearance of a love

[1:28:31] relationship. Um

[1:28:34] But the purpose of it, the motivation

[1:28:36] behind it is just the seeing of the

[1:28:38] unconditional love and the benefit that

[1:28:40] they may generate in another entity

[1:28:43] awakening to this unconditional love

[1:28:45] through the trajectory of interacting

[1:28:47] with you. But you won't need the love

[1:28:49] because

[1:28:51] you are connected to that essential

[1:28:53] field of what you are.

[1:28:56] So then it's just a relative exchange.

[1:28:58] It's just practice practical, it's

[1:29:01] purposeful, it's fun, it's pleasurable,

[1:29:04] it's

[1:29:06] um

[1:29:07] it's helpful, right? So now you're

[1:29:10] allowing people into your relationships

[1:29:12] if you will or you start to relate with

[1:29:13] people when it's helpful and and

[1:29:15] practical and of service to sort of a

[1:29:18] common vision perhaps and there's an

[1:29:20] alignment and a great sense of fun and

[1:29:22] shared love and light

[1:29:24] but you're not falling in love with an

[1:29:27] idea because you can't fall in love with

[1:29:30] any idea anymore.

[1:29:31] But this happens gradually.

[1:29:33] Uh so you could say the more enlightened

[1:29:35] you are the more you've already married

[1:29:38] yourself

[1:29:39] the one and therefore you've already

[1:29:41] fallen in love

[1:29:43] as deeply as you can. So yes, the

[1:29:45] process of enlightenment I saw another

[1:29:47] question said like

[1:29:49] is the recognition of the true self like

[1:29:51] falling in love and yes it is. At first

[1:29:54] you kind of start dating. You just a few

[1:29:56] moments at a time where you kind of

[1:29:58] familiarize yourself, you introduce

[1:30:00] yourself to this natural state of

[1:30:02] freedom. And it's like oh cool, it has

[1:30:05] potential.

[1:30:06] But you know, you haven't fallen in love

[1:30:08] quite yet.

[1:30:10] And then as you deepen your recognition,

[1:30:11] you devote more time, you go on a second

[1:30:13] date, a third date, a fourth date.

[1:30:15] Um

[1:30:17] you go to fun things together, you know,

[1:30:19] when you're talking to other people or

[1:30:21] going to your job, you're continuing to

[1:30:24] sort of text the one that you love. In

[1:30:26] this case you recognize the true self

[1:30:28] while you do your everyday things and it

[1:30:29] becomes a more ongoing relationship.

[1:30:32] And you start to gradually fall in love.

[1:30:35] And as you fall in love the bliss opens

[1:30:36] up. The bliss opens up in this state.

[1:30:40] And someone else asked bliss also

[1:30:42] appears.

[1:30:44] Um and I'd say ultimately yes, that is

[1:30:46] true. Absolutely not the way you meant

[1:30:48] it in your question though.

[1:30:50] But absolutely from the absolute which

[1:30:53] I'll get into maybe in a later session.

[1:30:55] Yes, even

[1:30:57] even this consciousness, this bliss is

[1:30:58] an appearance. However

[1:31:01] within the domain of what we're talking

[1:31:03] about right now which is

[1:31:05] the enlightenment of awareness becoming

[1:31:07] aware of itself

[1:31:10] bliss is not

[1:31:12] what I mean with bliss is not so much an

[1:31:15] experience of bliss. It is the

[1:31:17] recognition of your true nature which

[1:31:20] when it is recognized at the moments

[1:31:22] that it is recognized

[1:31:24] it realizes itself with a sense of

[1:31:26] bliss.

[1:31:27] So you could say that that bliss appears

[1:31:30] cuz you're not always in bliss

[1:31:32] or you don't experience yourself to

[1:31:33] always be in bliss.

[1:31:35] But it's kind of different because it is

[1:31:38] the intrinsic feeling state of awareness

[1:31:41] is

[1:31:42] is that bliss body, that completed body

[1:31:45] of pure beingness. And the more that

[1:31:47] your consciousness

[1:31:49] is aligning to that, the more that

[1:31:51] you'll become aware of the bliss that's

[1:31:53] always there already.

[1:31:55] So bliss is not quite an appearance in

[1:31:57] the typical sense of the word.

[1:32:02] Fall in love. Fall in love with you. It

[1:32:04] is about mhm time. It's about time we

[1:32:07] fall in love with our true self.

[1:32:10] Everything else will be improved. Don't

[1:32:11] worry about it, you know

[1:32:13] don't fear all your attachments dropping

[1:32:15] away so much. Just kind of say yes to

[1:32:18] this journey.

[1:32:20] Say yes to this adventure.

[1:32:22] Let yourself be stripped away from all

[1:32:23] non-essentials and you'll have the best

[1:32:26] time possible during this whole

[1:32:29] quarantine thing.

[1:32:32] Why not? Like fall in love.

[1:32:34] Transform yourself at the deepest level

[1:32:36] of your consciousness. Commit to this

[1:32:38] online retreat. Practice it and discuss

[1:32:41] it with other people. Like really pay

[1:32:42] attention on a day-to-day basis. Go sit

[1:32:44] and meditate on it. Go rewatch some of

[1:32:47] these sessions. Just listen, close your

[1:32:49] eyes and listen to the words where

[1:32:50] they're coming from, the state from

[1:32:52] which these words appear and to which

[1:32:54] these words are pointing your brain.

[1:32:57] What is that state like?

[1:32:59] And it's not some kind of a weird state.

[1:33:01] It's right here right now. It's you

[1:33:03] recognizing this.

[1:33:04] And it's a process of uncovering that

[1:33:06] which has always already been the case

[1:33:08] but you had simply haven't noticed it.

[1:33:10] It's right here in plain daylight, in

[1:33:12] plain sight.

[1:33:14] It's right here. It's yours. It's you

[1:33:16] already. But you think this or that.

[1:33:19] Stop thinking this or that. Recognize

[1:33:21] the truth. The clear ever-present

[1:33:24] inescapable truth of that space-like

[1:33:28] background

[1:33:29] of that which exists and knows that it

[1:33:32] is.

[1:33:39] I will stop the session right here.

[1:33:43] I love you all. Thank you for tuning in.

[1:33:46] And um

[1:33:49] we will be

[1:33:52] having our second session on Wednesday,

[1:33:54] upcoming Wednesday 8:00 p.m. Same

[1:33:57] starting time as we had today.

[1:34:00] Always appreciated if you share this

[1:34:03] um with your friends and communities who

[1:34:05] you think might benefit from this.

[1:34:07] Just cuz the intention is to reach as

[1:34:09] many people as we can with these

[1:34:11] nuggets, these tools.

[1:34:13] And um

[1:34:15] let's watch the whole world awaken and

[1:34:17] enlighten itself.

[1:34:19] Thank you for participating. Thank you

[1:34:21] for prioritizing what's important

[1:34:23] to your inner state of being and

[1:34:24] therefore to the manifest state of the

[1:34:27] world which is always in response

[1:34:30] to our relationship to our own

[1:34:31] consciousness.

[1:34:34] Take a deep breath.

[1:34:39] Relax into awareness

[1:34:43] with a sense of wanting to

[1:34:47] familiarize yourself and discover

[1:34:50] this infinite mystery that's at the very

[1:34:52] heart of your existence.

[1:34:54] Want more direct experience

[1:34:58] of this clear self.

[1:35:01] Discover it. Uncover it. Dive into it.

[1:35:04] See how deep it goes. See how far it

[1:35:07] goes. See if there's any borders or

[1:35:09] boundaries to this awareness.

[1:35:11] Does it have a shape or is it simply as

[1:35:13] it is? Free of space and time and

[1:35:15] location and limitation.

[1:35:17] No matter what you think of in limiting

[1:35:19] ways through your mind and body and

[1:35:23] world and other people is this awareness

[1:35:26] really affected or is this innermost

[1:35:28] sense of I am, of me consciousness, of

[1:35:30] me beingness

[1:35:32] completely free?

[1:35:34] The more you dive into it, the more the

[1:35:36] concepts of your mind that's based in

[1:35:39] causality and location and space and

[1:35:41] time and self and others and duality and

[1:35:44] polarity

[1:35:45] all that will beautifully unwind and

[1:35:47] come back in. All of your consciousness

[1:35:50] will begin to come back home into a

[1:35:53] state of freedom which at first can only

[1:35:55] be glimpsed but eventually can no longer

[1:35:57] be described. It is amazing. It is

[1:36:00] mind-blowing.

[1:36:01] It is what you are.

[1:36:04] I can only point at it and it is my

[1:36:06] heartfelt wish as yourself

[1:36:08] that you wake up to yourself.

[1:36:19] Let's love.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this 2020 retreat opener, Bentinho Massaro says enlightenment is not an experience and not a black-or-white event. He describes it as a spectrum of consciousness that increases gradually for most people, with occasional leaps, as consciousness comes to know itself more brightly.
He points to a natural state of simply being aware, which he says is not a form, a particular feeling, or a concept. He frames it as the quality of existence itself, and suggests that recognizing it is the core of the shift he is describing.
Massaro states plainly that enlightenment is possible, calling it his premise, experience, conviction and message. He presents it as something to test through first-hand attention rather than accept on faith.
Massaro argues that thoughts, emotions and identities appear within a field of awareness that does not come and go with them. Seeing experience as appearance within awareness, rather than as the self, is central to the freedom he describes.
He says the first few sessions are designed for newcomers, and he emphasizes that relaxation is key. The approach is to relate to yourself as a body while noticing experience, rather than forcing a state through effort.
He observes that many people stop their self-description at the body, which he humorously describes as a clump of flesh obeying Newton's laws. He then asks whether the concept of being human was something we inherited rather than originated, inviting listeners to examine that assumption.
