Anand Sahib: Finding TrueBliss Beyond External Circumstances

What is Anand Sahib and Why Does It Matter?

Anand Sahib is a composition by Guru Amar Das (the third Guru in Sikhism) that addresses a universal human experience: achieving lasting bliss and peace despite external accomplishments. The text teaches that true euphoria—called Anand—emerges not from temporary pleasures but from connecting with what Sikh tradition calls the "true Guru." Throughout this series, the teaching unpacks how the Guru serves as an enlightener that transforms us from ignorance toward the light of universal oneness. The composition is sung at every Sikh ceremony—whether of joy or loss—because it contains a spiritual technology for reorienting the mind toward deep, rooted contentment.

Anand Sahib opens with a deceptively simple statement: "Bliss has emerged; oh my mother, I have obtained the true guru." This is not merely a personal testimony. It is a direct proclamation to all humanity. The opening verse functions as an announcement that the path to genuine bliss—not fleeting happiness or pleasure, but a deep euphoria rooted at the core of one's being—is discoverable and attainable. As explained in the Nanak Naam teaching, the Guru responds to a question that lives in almost every human being: we achieve things, we accomplish goals, we acquire possessions, yet something still feels empty. Why?

What Does the Word "Anand" Actually Mean?

The word Anand is often translated as "bliss" or "joy," but this translation misses a critical distinction. Anand is not ordinary happiness or pleasure. When Guru Amar Das uses this term, he is describing a state of euphoria—but crucially, one that is not dependent on external circumstances or sensory experience. He is not saying, "I am happy because something good happened to me," or "I am happy because I listened to great music or read a great book."

Rather, Anand is a euphoria that originates from the deepest part of one's being, what the teaching calls "the core of who we are." It is independent of mood, of possession, of achievement. This is what makes Anand radically different from the temporary joy that the world offers. The world's pleasure is contingent—it arrives when conditions are right, and it departs when conditions change. Anand is not contingent. It arises when we connect with something that does not fluctuate.

In the opening verse, Guru Amar Das describes what this connection feels like: "songs of celebrations resound within the mind," "melodies and harmonies have come to sing the divine word." The mind, when in contact with this deeper source of bliss, naturally begins to sing. The world around you—the rain, the trees, the entire creation—seems to participate in this celebration with you. This is not poetic exaggeration; it is describing a shift in perception that occurs when the mind is aligned with what the tradition calls "the true Guru."

What Is the Guru, and Why Isn't It Just a Person?

One of the most critical misunderstandings about Sikh and Hindu spiritual traditions is that "Guru" refers to a single person or requires joining a cult. The teaching clarifies: the Guru is not limited to a person. In fact, Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself—the founder of Sikhism—stated that he had a Guru. This signals something fundamental: the Guru is not a role that belongs exclusively to one individual. It is an essence, a principle, a catalyst for awakening.

The word "guru" can be broken into two syllables: gu (darkness) and ru (light). Therefore, the Guru is something or someone that takes us from darkness into light. A more accurate translation than "teacher" is "enlightener"—something that transforms us, that awakens us from ignorance. The Guru is the catalyst that wakes us up.

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji wrote the Mool Mantar—the foundational spiritual passage within Sikhism—he concluded by saying that all the wisdom and oneness he was connected with came through "good Prasad" (the blessing or grace of the true Guru). Similarly, Anand Sahib begins with "Ik Onkar, Satgur Prasad"—"Oneness vibrating infinitely, known by the true guru's grace." The Guru is not something you obtain through effort or membership. It is something that reveals itself through grace, through receptivity, through opening yourself to what is already present.

What Are the Three Forms of the Guru in Sikh Philosophy?

The Sikh tradition teaches that the Guru manifests in three forms: Nirgun (formless), Sargun (with form), and Shabad (the divine word). Understanding these three helps clarify why "Guru" cannot be limited to a single teacher or person.

Nirgun Guru refers to the transcendent, formless aspect of the Guru—the universal oneness itself, without shape or limitation. This is the spirit of enlightenment that exists everywhere, in all things, binding all existence together.

Sargun Guru refers to the Guru with form—the divine presence as manifest in creation, in people, in nature. The Sikh Gurus were understood to be embodied expressions of this Sargun aspect. A teacher, a saint, a realized being who has aligned themselves with the universal wisdom—these can serve as Sargun Guru, a living mirror of enlightenment.

Shabad Guru refers to the Guru as divine word or vibration—the essence of truth as expressed through hymn, teaching, and sacred sound. The compositions of the Sikh Gurus, including Anand Sahib itself, are considered Shabad Guru. When you engage with these teachings with an open heart and mind, the Shabad Guru is working on you, transforming your consciousness.

This is why Anand Sahib is sung at every ceremony. Whether a baby is born or a person dies, whether you marry or simply attend weekly service, the same composition is sung. This is because the Shabad Guru is not limited by circumstance. It works on the heart in loss as much as in celebration. Its message is timeless and universal.

What Are the Sikh Gurus, and How Do They Relate to the Guru Principle?

The Sikh Gurus—ten of them in human form, plus the eternal Guru Granth Sahib (the scripture itself, considered the living Guru of Sikhism)—were recognized as individuals who had fully realized the principle of the Guru. They did not claim to be gods or supreme beings. Rather, they were understood to have completely surrendered their individual ego and aligned themselves with the universal wisdom. As a result, whatever they taught, whatever they did, whatever they manifested was an expression of the Guru principle itself.

Guru Amar Das, who composed Anand Sahib, lived this principle so completely that his very presence and words became an instrument of enlightenment for others. People were not bowing to him as a personality but recognizing in him the reflection of universal truth. This is why the Sikh tradition does not worship the Gurus as gods. Instead, it acknowledges them as fully realized beings through whom the Guru principle was made visible and accessible.

How Do We Achieve Calmness and Tranquility in Life?

The teaching addresses a practical question: "How do I achieve calmness and tranquility in my life?" The answer is not a technique or a product. It is a reorientation of attention.

We are, by nature, always searching. From the moment we wake up, we are "hunting for happiness," as the teaching puts it. We are "always on the lookout for the next thing that can give us this feeling of true bliss." Yet somewhere deep within us, we know that true bliss is possible and attainable—otherwise, we would not pursue it so relentlessly.

The problem is that we seek this bliss in the world of temporary things: in good moods, in possessions, in achievements, in sensory pleasures. The Guru is saying something different. It is saying: shift your focus. Stop looking outward for something that is, by its nature, always changing. Instead, turn inward and connect with that which does not change—the essence of existence itself, the oneness that is already within you and all around you.

Calmness and tranquility arise when you stop resisting what is. When your mind stops constantly demanding the next thing, stops constantly measuring itself against what it does not have, you enter a state of receptivity. You become an observer of life rather than someone frantically trying to control life. In this observation, in this less-resistant awareness, peace naturally arises. This is what Guru Amar Das means when he describes how "the true guru was obtained with tranquility and songs of celebrations resound within the mind."

What Is Anand Sahib Meant for? Gratitude and Bliss in Your Life

Anand Sahib is explicitly designed to shift the mind from complaint and asking to praise and gratitude. The teaching notes a profound movement in the verse: we move away from "always asking" to "now praising." This is not a psychological technique to make yourself feel better. It is a fundamental reorientation of how you relate to existence.

When you are always in a state of asking—always thinking about what you don't have, what you wish were different, what you think you lack—your mind is in a perpetual state of resistance to what is. This resistance creates suffering. It creates the very restlessness and emptiness that people feel even when they have accomplished things.

Gratitude, by contrast, is an acknowledgment of what is. It is a recognition that you are alive, that you exist within an infinite universe, that somehow—despite your ignorance, despite your blind spots—you are sustained and supported by an intelligence far greater than your own. This intelligence creates, sustains, and dissolves. When you align with this intelligence and acknowledge it—when you sing praises of it rather than making demands upon it—your entire relationship with existence transforms.

The teaching describes this beautifully: "The sound of the rain, you know we don't think about it, we don't observe it, but when you listen, the singing and the trees are swaying and nature is expressing itself in that moment." Most of us live hypnotized by our own thoughts, our own resistance, our own demands. We are blind to the intelligence and beauty that is already singing around us. When you step out of this hypnosis—when the Guru awakens you—you suddenly perceive that the entire universe is already singing. You don't have to make it sing. You just have to hear it. This shift from demanding to listening, from asking to acknowledging, is what brings the state of Anand.

What Is the Relationship Between the Guru and Oneness?

At the heart of all Sikh teaching is the principle of oneness. The word "Ik Onkar"—one vibration, one essence—appears at the beginning of Sikh scripture and prayer. This oneness is not a belief or a philosophy. It is a description of what actually is. Everything in the universe, from the smallest particle to the largest star, from human consciousness to animal instinct, from the visible world to the invisible world, is made of the same essential substance. This substance is conscious, creative, intelligent, and alive. It is what the teaching calls the spirit of the universe.

We are not separate from this oneness. We are expressions of it, just as a wave is not separate from the ocean. Yet we live as if we are separate. We act as if "I" am a standalone entity that must fight for survival and meaning against a hostile or indifferent world. This separation is not real. It is ignorance, a failure to perceive what is actually true.

The Guru's function is to wake us from this ignorance. The Guru is the principle of awakening within the oneness itself. When you connect with the Guru, you are not connecting with something outside yourself. You are awakening to the truth that you are already, always, fundamentally part of this oneness. You are not becoming something new. You are recognizing what has always been true. This recognition brings the state of Anand—not because something external has changed, but because your perception of reality has shifted from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowing).

How Does the Guru Enter Our Life?

The teaching emphasizes that the Guru does not enter through force, through coercion, or even through direct asking. It enters through grace. Yet grace is not random or inaccessible. Grace works through receptivity. The more you quiet your mind, the more you let go of resistance, the more you listen rather than demand, the more space you create for the Guru to enter.

This is why meditation, contemplation, and the recitation of sacred word (Shabad) are so central to Sikh practice. These are not activities meant to earn the Guru's attention. They are practices that remove the obstacles to perceiving what the Guru is already offering. They are like cleaning a window so that sunlight can come through. The sun does not require permission to shine. It is already shining. You are just removing the dirt that prevents you from seeing its light.

The teaching suggests that at any moment, on a planet with eight billion people, innumerable beings are experiencing the awakening of the Guru. This is not exclusive or rare. It is as available as the light of the sun. The question is not whether the Guru is there. The question is: are you ready to perceive it?

Where to Go From Here

Anand Sahib is not a historical artifact or a cultural curiosity. It is a practical manual for inner transformation. If you find yourself asking—as most humans do—"How do I move from emptiness to fullness, from restlessness to peace?"—then this teaching offers a precise answer: shift your relationship from the external world to the eternal principle of oneness. Shift from demanding and asking to acknowledging and praising. Allow the Guru—in whatever form is accessible to you—to awaken you from the dream of separation.

The Nanak Naam channel offers the full Anand Sahib series, with verse-by-verse explanation of all five verses. Each verse unpacks a different dimension of this transformation. The first verse establishes the promise: bliss is possible. Subsequent verses explore how this bliss manifests, what obstacles block it, and how to align your life with it.

Begin by sitting quietly with the opening verse. Read it slowly. Listen to it sung. Let the words work on your heart. Notice what resistance arises in you, what doubt, what hope. The Guru works through all of this. Your only job is to show up, to listen, and to gradually allow your mind to shift from the constant hunting for happiness in the world to the recognition of the bliss that is already inherent in your own being.

[0:32] we're going to be taking a journey a

[0:34] journey of soul searching a journey of

[0:37] examining our lives by looking at the

[0:44] guru guru madoski called a nun side and

[0:47] I want you to think about this as an

[0:50] opportunity to reflect on some of the

[0:55] bigger questions in life reflect on what

[0:58] is my life really about

[1:00] [Music]

[1:09] an anti begins with the name and the

[1:13] title rogram Kelly Mahalo tiga the third

[1:18] guru or the Guru in the third house and

[1:20] the title Ananda and it begins with ik

[1:24] Onkar satgur prasad oneness vibrating

[1:28] infinitely known by the true guru's

[1:31] grace bliss has emerged oh my mother

[1:36] I have obtained the true guru the true

[1:40] guru was obtained with tranquility and

[1:42] songs of celebrations resound within the

[1:46] mind melodies and harmonies have come to

[1:50] sing the divine word sing the words of

[1:53] hurry those who have embedded this in

[1:57] their mind nanak says bliss has occurred

[2:01] I have found the true guru now a nun

[2:06] type is a verse I'm sure that you're all

[2:08] familiar with with certainly within the

[2:11] Sikh tradition it is sung on every

[2:15] single occasion at the end of every

[2:17] single ceremony whether it is a ceremony

[2:21] of joy or a ceremony of loss the anon

[2:25] side whether you're getting married

[2:27] whether a baby has been born or whether

[2:29] it's just your regular service that you

[2:32] go to a nun type is the one thing that

[2:34] is always being son so it's such an

[2:36] important composition that we need to

[2:38] understand and the opening line is a

[2:42] line of celebration it's a statement to

[2:45] mankind by the third guru guru amethyst

[2:49] you who's written this it's a statement

[2:51] to mankind that says hey listen up I've

[2:55] found true bliss so he starts by saying

[2:59] bliss has emerged and how has he found

[3:03] this true bliss he says I found the

[3:06] Bliss because I found the guru the true

[3:09] guru and it's a statement to mankind

[3:12] because we are always searching no

[3:16] matter what if you notice when you wake

[3:19] up in the morning that sir

[3:22] begins were always hunting for happiness

[3:25] were always on the lookout for the next

[3:29] thing that can give us this feeling of

[3:31] true bliss and it's because somewhere

[3:34] deep rooted within us we know that true

[3:37] bliss is actually possible there's a

[3:39] part of us that actually believes true

[3:42] bliss the experience of it is there it's

[3:46] it's it's achievable it's attainable we

[3:48] should be able to find it and we do so

[3:51] many things in our lives just to try and

[3:53] achieve that bliss and guru is saying

[3:55] that joy excitement pleasures that we

[4:00] experience in the world these things are

[4:03] temporary and he says I found something

[4:05] else I found bliss he uses this word

[4:08] Ananda and the word Anand almost means

[4:12] euphoria but not just because of

[4:17] something good that's happened in my

[4:19] life he's talking about something from a

[4:21] far deeper place within him or us at the

[4:23] core of his being he's saying I'm now

[4:27] euphoric right at the deep of who I am

[4:30] and it's not dependent on something

[4:32] external it's not dependent on our

[4:35] senses I'm not happy because I'm in a

[4:39] good mood today or I've got everything

[4:42] that I need or I've just listened to a

[4:44] great piece of music or read a great

[4:46] book that's not the reason why I'm in

[4:48] this euphoria there's another reason

[4:50] something else has given me this

[4:52] deep-rooted sense of bliss what is the

[4:55] experience of that he says when I'm in

[4:58] this bliss it feels like my mind is

[5:01] celebrating there are songs and melodies

[5:04] it feels like the whole world is now

[5:06] singing because I found something that

[5:09] gives me this experience so what is it

[5:14] that he's found what is the answer that

[5:18] gives you this true bliss that we all

[5:20] seem to be looking for and the answer is

[5:22] something called the true guru well

[5:26] what's the true guru and we'll notice as

[5:29] we go throughout the announcer that the

[5:31] entire message is about how something

[5:34] called the true

[5:35] is giving us this really deep-rooted

[5:38] sense of happiness and stillness and

[5:41] pleasure and peace that's unlike

[5:45] anything else that we've ever

[5:46] experienced so how do we get this

[5:49] what is this true guru that seems to be

[5:52] able to deliver something almost magical

[5:56] when we talk about a guru it's often

[5:59] something that puts people off the idea

[6:01] of having a spiritual guide and

[6:07] straightaway people feel concerned that

[6:10] we're being indoctrinated there seems to

[6:13] be some religion that you have to join

[6:15] or a cult and we worry when we hear some

[6:19] of this terminology because we haven't

[6:21] really understood what does it mean to

[6:23] have a guru in your life

[6:24] now the most important thing to

[6:26] understand is the Guru is not limited to

[6:30] a person the Guru isn't just one

[6:34] individual when we look at the writings

[6:39] of Guru Nanak Dev ji even he says I have

[6:43] a guru in my life so really we need to

[6:46] unpack this understanding look the most

[6:49] important spiritual passage within the

[6:54] Sikh tradition is the moon monther

[6:57] written by guru nanak dev ji and at the

[6:59] end of the movement their guru nanak

[7:01] says all of this wisdom and this oneness

[7:05] that I'm connected with is because of

[7:07] good Prasad and same again we see at the

[7:11] beginning of this an unsub verse equal

[7:13] car start the god Prasad there is this

[7:16] one vibration all throughout the

[7:19] universe but you only know it by the

[7:22] blessing of the true guru and throughout

[7:24] this announcer we're going to be looking

[7:25] at how do we understand this guru how do

[7:28] we get this guru in our life what does

[7:30] it mean so the first thing I want us to

[7:32] understand is guru nanak had a guru guru

[7:37] nanak has a guru in his life

[7:39] so guru is not limited to a person the

[7:43] guru is an idea that predates guru nanak

[7:46] dev ji it's an idea that's been around

[7:48] for tens of thousands of years so it's

[7:51] really important that we understand the

[7:53] deeper meaning of what it is the way I

[7:55] like to think about a guru is the Guru

[7:58] is like the essence of enlightenment

[8:01] it's like the spirit of enlightenment

[8:05] the Guru is a catalyst to waken us up

[8:10] and let's look at this word guru itself

[8:14] what does it actually mean the word guru

[8:16] can be split into two syllables gu

[8:20] andrew GU being darkness ruh being light

[8:24] so the Guru is someone or something that

[8:30] can take us away from our darkness into

[8:34] light and very often when we try and

[8:40] translate the word guru we translate it

[8:42] to something like a teacher but I like

[8:46] to think that a more accurate word for

[8:48] guru is the enlightener someone that

[8:51] transforms us something that awakens us

[8:54] so enlightener is a word that I think is

[8:57] the most closest thing that we can use

[8:59] to translate the word guru now what do

[9:03] we mean what is this darkness what is

[9:05] this light a lot of the time in

[9:08] spiritual language we use terminology

[9:11] like oneness the universal force and

[9:15] what that means is that the whole

[9:17] universe has an essence to it it has a

[9:21] spirit to it it has an aliveness to it

[9:24] and that aliveness belongs to all of us

[9:28] that aliveness is equally within you as

[9:31] it is within me whether you're religious

[9:34] or not whether you're spiritual or not

[9:35] it's equally inside a plant as it is

[9:38] inside a fish or a bird it's it's

[9:40] everywhere and it's everything it's not

[9:42] limited to one thing it's just the

[9:45] essence of the entire universe and

[9:47] that's been called a oneness and so many

[9:50] times in various spiritual traditions

[9:52] this oneness has been referred to as

[9:55] having the quality of light it's light

[9:58] it's bright it's radiant and the Guru

[10:02] is trying to get us to that light get us

[10:05] to that experience where we're also

[10:08] connected with this spirit of the

[10:10] universe and sometimes this has been

[10:13] used as the terminology God and I think

[10:16] for me personally I think the word God

[10:18] is a little bit limiting which is why

[10:20] the word oneness seems to encapsulate

[10:23] what we're trying to talk about a little

[10:25] bit better now guru is trying to bring

[10:27] us out of darkness into this light the

[10:30] Guru is the transformer from darkness to

[10:32] light now if this oneness is the light

[10:35] and this oneness is everywhere and is

[10:38] all around us as an inside of us at an

[10:40] inside you and me and everything else

[10:42] this oneness was there before time

[10:45] before the universe was created this

[10:47] oneness will always exist then if that's

[10:51] the light then what's the darkness

[10:53] what's the darkness that the Guru is

[10:54] trying to get us out of well the

[10:57] darkness is our mind the darkness is not

[11:01] knowing being in a unconscious state

[11:04] unawakened state unrealized mentality

[11:07] where we are completely ignorant of the

[11:11] light of the oneness so think about

[11:15] darkness to light being the difference

[11:19] between being asleep and being awake now

[11:23] they are very clearly two different

[11:24] states of being

[11:27] but the Guru has constantly reminded us

[11:30] that we are asleep without even knowing

[11:34] that we're asleep we are right now

[11:37] asleep because we are unaware of this

[11:42] oneness that we're connected with we

[11:44] don't really know about it we don't

[11:45] connect with it we don't know how to

[11:48] engage with it so the Guru is trying to

[11:51] get us to change our experience of life

[11:53] itself our mind on the other hand is

[11:56] completely oblivious to it so we are

[11:58] asleep and we are blind to what is

[12:04] really going on in the universe the

[12:06] universe is essentially this living

[12:10] breathing organism and again when I talk

[12:13] about the universe I'm talking about

[12:16] some

[12:16] that's even beyond the physical universe

[12:18] itself it doesn't matter that we are

[12:21] talking about it doesn't mean that we're

[12:23] talking about just the physical stars

[12:26] and planets of course that's the big

[12:28] part of the universe but when I talk

[12:29] about universe I talk about the wider

[12:31] sense of the word almost as though we're

[12:34] talking about the spirit of the universe

[12:36] itself the the essence of life itself

[12:39] our minds are completely unaware of this

[12:43] we don't spend any time engaging with it

[12:45] and so we don't realize that we are also

[12:49] part of that essence of the universe we

[12:51] are also part of that oneness and when

[12:55] we don't realize this we walk through

[12:58] life on our day to day basis always in

[13:01] our sense of me we are completely only

[13:05] focused on albro our bodies our families

[13:09] our careers our circumstances our

[13:13] worries all the things that are related

[13:16] to this individual body this is the only

[13:18] thing that we think is the most

[13:20] important thing in life and that's the

[13:22] ignorance that the goony is trying to

[13:23] get us away from that's the experience

[13:25] of life that the Guru is trying to say

[13:28] hey there's a better way of living life

[13:30] where you're not always just thinking

[13:32] about the me now a really important

[13:35] question that you might ask yourself is

[13:37] well what's wrong with just thinking

[13:39] about the me all the time

[13:40] this is where I live I live in this body

[13:43] when I wake up every day this is what I

[13:45] have to deal with my body my family my

[13:48] circumstances my job my career my

[13:50] finances my relationships these are the

[13:52] things that I have to worry about why do

[13:54] I need to think about this oneness well

[13:57] remember how we started this whole thing

[13:59] we talked about how we spend most of our

[14:03] life trying to fill our life with

[14:06] happiness we try to find happiness and

[14:08] the way we try and do it is we try and

[14:11] get lots of different things in our

[14:14] lives to work we try and fix so many

[14:16] different things so our finances are all

[14:18] just right and we have a good job that

[14:21] means that we have enough income coming

[14:22] in and we're not spending too much and

[14:24] we have the right people around us and

[14:26] we look after our health and we look

[14:29] after

[14:29] mental well-being so we are constantly

[14:33] spending all of our energy trying to

[14:36] find bliss because we are locked in this

[14:38] body of me this understanding of me and

[14:41] we use this me to go out there and find

[14:44] bliss because the me is looking for

[14:46] bliss the Guru is saying well if we

[14:49] address this understanding of the me

[14:51] itself the myself the me the I if we

[14:55] address this understanding so that

[14:57] you're spending less time worrying about

[14:59] the me and more time and awareness of

[15:03] the oneness that you're a part of then

[15:06] you will naturally feel the Bliss that

[15:09] you spend so much effort trying to get

[15:11] into so with the Guru the mind starts to

[15:17] realize that this me is not the ultimate

[15:20] reality now we're not saying it's not

[15:23] there of course it's there but it's not

[15:25] the ultimate reality it's not it's the

[15:28] perceived reality it's the way it's the

[15:31] thing that we use to try and look out

[15:33] with it's that we look at the world

[15:36] through this lens of the me or the

[15:38] myself and the Guru will point out

[15:41] throughout all the guru spiritual

[15:43] teachings is what we use to find

[15:47] happiness is actually the thing that's

[15:49] suffering the me itself is the cause of

[15:52] suffering not the cause of happiness the

[15:55] cause of happiness is to transcend the

[15:57] me is to go beyond the sense of me

[15:59] itself so the Guru is an essence it's a

[16:04] quality it's a principle that tries to

[16:08] bring us wisdom in our life tries to get

[16:11] us to change the way that we think about

[16:13] our life and not think about the me but

[16:17] think about this our body and

[16:19] circumstances and relationships are all

[16:22] part of this game or this song of

[16:25] oneness so that's what the good is

[16:27] trying to do in our life now what is the

[16:30] Guru itself let's talk a little bit

[16:31] deeper about what is the good where is

[16:34] it how do we find it how do we engage

[16:36] with it in the six virtual tradition the

[16:39] Guru has been described as having three

[16:41] different shapes three

[16:42] different forms and I'll quickly go

[16:45] through what those three different forms

[16:47] are because it's important to understand

[16:49] how we engage with this guru

[16:51] the first one is described as being near

[16:55] good formless the Guru is not a physical

[16:58] being it's not limited to just a

[17:01] particular person or a particular text

[17:04] or a particular wisdom the Guru is not

[17:07] limited to that the Guru is a near good

[17:09] being it's a formless being with no

[17:12] physical and essence to it and what we

[17:15] mean by that is that begins to sound

[17:18] very much like the oneness that we

[17:20] talked about earlier the oneness is

[17:22] there before time it is in the world

[17:25] it's in creation but it's also outside

[17:28] of creation if the universe was to

[17:30] disappear tomorrow the oneness would

[17:32] still be there now when we talk about

[17:34] the Guru in the exact same way we

[17:35] realize that the Guru and the oneness

[17:38] are actually the same thing

[17:40] so the oneness is everywhere but the

[17:44] oneness does many different things and

[17:46] the way to think about the Guru is to

[17:50] think about the oneness as having many

[17:52] different jobs part of what the oneness

[17:54] does is that it creates so it has a

[17:57] creator function and part of what it

[18:00] does is that it sustains it looks after

[18:03] things that keep things going just the

[18:04] way we're breathing right now have you

[18:07] ever thought about this we're not

[18:08] actually breathing but breathing just

[18:10] happens naturally you never have to

[18:13] remind yourself to breathe it's just

[18:15] there all the time even when you're

[18:17] asleep you're breathing all throughout

[18:19] the day it's happening so that's what we

[18:21] mean by the oneness being a sustainer

[18:23] it's constantly just keeping the

[18:25] system's going it's keeping things

[18:27] flowing at all times and the oneness is

[18:29] also the destroyer because you can't

[18:31] have life without life ending without

[18:33] death so it's constantly destroying

[18:36] things putting things back into the

[18:38] universe recycling things and everything

[18:41] in reality is something that's been

[18:43] recycle even our bodies are made up of

[18:45] of cells and atoms that have have been

[18:48] used for other things before so the

[18:51] oneness is this creation force it's this

[18:54] sustaining force it's this destroyer

[18:56] force and one of the things that the the

[18:58] oneness can do is that it also has the

[19:01] ability or the job or the role to awaken

[19:05] us it has the ability to make us think

[19:08] differently and that ability of oneness

[19:11] is called the Guru the Guru has the

[19:13] ability to make us think differently so

[19:18] the oneness is here we are the one is

[19:21] the universe and everything that you see

[19:23] all around you is really just another

[19:26] form of that oneness and one of those

[19:29] forms one of those functions is to help

[19:31] us change and guide us and this has been

[19:34] called this this ability of the oneness

[19:39] to delude us and to awaken us has been

[19:43] called grace and I use this word delude

[19:45] because I want to pique your interest

[19:47] here the you know this everything that

[19:51] we're talking about this oneness and the

[19:54] mind not being realized and not knowing

[19:57] it how does all of this happen the

[20:00] oneness has created all of us you me and

[20:03] everything that you see around us but it

[20:06] also created the illusion that we are

[20:09] not part of the oneness it also created

[20:12] this idea within our minds that we are

[20:15] just me myself so it deluded us it gave

[20:20] us it gave itself a idea that you are an

[20:25] individual being and then it also

[20:27] creates a guru and enlightener to awaken

[20:31] you away from that way of thinking so it

[20:33] creates the problem it creates the

[20:35] solution and it is the solution itself

[20:37] and when we start thinking like this a

[20:40] lot of people might be thinking well

[20:42] that just sounds really strange it

[20:43] sounds really weird what's the point of

[20:45] it all and this has been described by

[20:47] spiritual masters throughout so many

[20:49] different traditions as being almost the

[20:52] game of oneness the game of God the play

[20:55] the music the melody the song this is

[20:58] the oneness playing with itself so as

[21:01] part of that process it has the ability

[21:05] to change the way we think as well

[21:07] and so what you need in order to

[21:11] understand if you believe that you are

[21:14] this physical form you need another

[21:17] physical form to awaken you and so we

[21:21] now move to the second form or shape of

[21:24] the guru the first remember being the

[21:25] near Gong shape the formless shape the

[21:28] second being a guru

[21:31] that's called a circle form a formed

[21:33] guru guru which has a physical form and

[21:36] this is typically what we what we think

[21:39] about when we talk about a guru you

[21:41] might think about a an old man with a

[21:45] white beard in spiritual robes asaru of

[21:50] some sort that is a teacher someone who

[21:55] you go to to learn your lessons so the

[21:58] Guru can take many forms it starts with

[22:01] this formless entity it is the oneness

[22:02] itself but in order for us to understand

[22:05] it we need someone or something to

[22:08] actually engage with and that's called

[22:10] the sargan form and that usually takes

[22:12] the form of an enlightened master and

[22:15] what we mean by an enlightened master is

[22:17] someone who they themselves have

[22:19] awakened their minds they themselves

[22:21] used to think one way about themselves

[22:25] the way you and me do about I am the me

[22:27] and this is this is me and my problems

[22:30] and they themselves have been awakened

[22:32] they themselves have transformed their

[22:35] thinking so now they're connected with

[22:36] this oneness so they are enlightened and

[22:39] have the ability to enlighten us

[22:42] remember enlightenment means just to

[22:44] move from the ignorance that we are here

[22:47] these limited individual beings and it

[22:50] moves us into understanding and

[22:53] appreciating that we are part of

[22:54] something much bigger

[22:56] so that's your nail-gun form your

[22:58] formless guru your form guru which is

[23:01] this enlightened master that can

[23:02] transform us but how does the Guru

[23:05] transform us the sargan guru the form

[23:08] the physical guru changes us through the

[23:12] third version of the guru which is the

[23:14] wisdom of the guru and this has been

[23:16] called shabad guru the word or the

[23:19] message

[23:20] and by shabath what we mean is that the

[23:24] guru has a message for you and for me to

[23:29] put into our mind to understand that we

[23:32] need to think a little bit differently

[23:34] the Guru comes with a message comes with

[23:38] a wisdom comes with a guidance so we

[23:43] need to understand that the Guru has

[23:45] many different forms that all of these

[23:47] forms have a function in our life and in

[23:50] the good much spiritual tradition more

[23:52] often than not the word guru has only

[23:55] ever been used to describe one of the

[23:58] three forms of the Guru which is the

[24:00] sargan guru now in the Sikh tradition

[24:02] whenever somebody mentions the Guru you

[24:04] pretty much always think that they're

[24:06] talking about Guru Nanak or one of the

[24:10] gurus or you're talking about the

[24:12] scripture Guru Granth Sahib ji and this

[24:14] is the sargan form this is the saga the

[24:16] the form the physical form or the

[24:20] message form which is the shabath guru

[24:22] but we need to understand that when we

[24:24] talk about Guru Nanak what makes Nanak a

[24:28] Guru Nanak what makes Nanak so special

[24:31] well remember what we talked about how

[24:34] the Guru has the ability to transform

[24:36] you but first they need to transform

[24:38] themselves well Nanak is somebody who

[24:41] has become enlightened to this a new way

[24:44] of thinking to this authentic original

[24:47] way of thinking where they understand

[24:49] who their authentic true self is they've

[24:52] understood that but when guru nanak dev

[24:55] ji passed on to the second guru and we

[24:59] had a guru angad dev ji and the third

[25:01] guru guru amar das ji that guru was

[25:05] essentially the same we don't actually

[25:07] see the second third fourth fifth guru

[25:11] all the way up to Guru Granth Sahib ji

[25:13] in the form of the scripture we don't

[25:15] see them as any different why not

[25:17] because it's not the person Nanak it's

[25:21] not the body of Guru Nanak that we are

[25:23] interested in it's the Enlightenment of

[25:25] Guru Nanak and that enlightenment moves

[25:28] from one to another that ability to

[25:30] awaken a person and then awaken another

[25:33] and

[25:33] wakin another that awakened nests is

[25:35] what we're calling the Guru itself and

[25:38] the way we demonstrate this certainly

[25:40] within the sea spiritual tradition if

[25:42] you notice at the beginning of an unsub

[25:44] it says Mahalo teacher now I don't know

[25:49] if you've ever thought about this but

[25:51] the word mel mala is always used to say

[25:55] which of guru has written this Barney

[25:57] but it never says guru teacher it never

[26:01] says written by the third guru

[26:03] it says written in the third house now

[26:06] let's think about what that means now

[26:10] imagine that you have moved house from

[26:15] your old apartment or your old home into

[26:18] your new home everything has changed but

[26:22] you are essentially the same you haven't

[26:26] changed the things around you have

[26:28] changed where you live might have

[26:31] changed but you have just moved from one

[26:34] to another when you buy a new house you

[26:35] don't say I'm a different person you

[26:38] just live in a different place and in

[26:40] the same way guru nanak dev ji moving

[26:43] into guru angad efg is not a different

[26:45] person it's the same message that has

[26:48] moved from me he'll the word mail

[26:49] actually means house or mansion so the

[26:52] Guru moved from one mansion to another

[26:55] mansion to another mansion so when we

[26:57] say Mahalo pedia what we actually mean

[26:59] is that one enlightenment message that's

[27:03] always been there throughout time from

[27:05] the beginning of time the wisdom of

[27:07] oneness has always been there that

[27:09] wisdom of oneness was in nanak and now

[27:12] in guru angad and then in guru amar das

[27:14] tree and now that wisdom within the seat

[27:17] spiritual tradition is in good grunts ah

[27:19] gee but that doesn't mean that the

[27:22] entire wisdom of that oneness of the

[27:24] Guru is only in Guru Granth Sahib ji now

[27:28] who knows how many other planets that

[27:30] are out there and where else the Guru

[27:32] has been and what other beings in in

[27:35] multiple universes the Guru is also

[27:38] transforming so we don't have this idea

[27:40] that the Guru Granth or the Shabet is

[27:43] the only space where the Guru exists the

[27:45] good

[27:46] doesn't exist anywhere else because if

[27:48] you think like that then you've

[27:49] forgotten that the Guru has three

[27:51] different shapes the Guru is formless

[27:53] the Guru has form and the Guru is in the

[27:55] shape of wisdom so wisdom can be

[27:59] transferred even if you're not standing

[28:01] physically in front of a book or the

[28:04] Holy Scripture or the word or the person

[28:07] or the man or the woman whoever it is

[28:09] that you think is your guru you don't

[28:12] have to be standing there in front of

[28:14] them to say that I am in the presence of

[28:16] the Guru you're always in the presence

[28:18] of the Guru itself so when we're bowing

[28:22] to the Guru you should always be very

[28:24] clear in your mind that you are bowing

[28:25] to this universal wisdom that is there

[28:29] to transform you the Guru has one

[28:32] function to transform the way you think

[28:35] in the descibe a verse that has an

[28:40] ending line that's repeated a few times

[28:42] is guru it could be huge I Sabina D acha

[28:46] acha da da

[28:47] so Mary said no Jai guru give me this

[28:51] one understanding give me this wisdom

[28:53] that everything belongs to oneness

[28:57] everything comes from oneness subnautica

[28:59] eka data and don't let me forget it

[29:02] the Guru really has a one job and that's

[29:04] to make you realize that you are part of

[29:08] a oneness and to help you keep that

[29:10] realization so it's very important that

[29:13] we understand what this guru is now the

[29:16] other thing that's really important is

[29:18] to not externalize the Guru and what I

[29:22] mean by that is let's not always think

[29:25] about the goo as something different or

[29:28] outside of us now think about these

[29:30] three different shapes of the guru that

[29:32] I talked about it's very easy to think

[29:34] that the Guru is something that's far

[29:36] away the Guru is nothing to do with you

[29:39] it's something bigger and greater than

[29:41] you remember what I said that guru is

[29:44] the darkness to light transformation and

[29:47] that darkness is within your mind when

[29:50] your mind

[29:51] transforms from your own ignorance to

[29:55] your own enlightenment that is also

[29:58] called guru

[29:59] that means the Guru is not just a person

[30:02] who does that change the Guru is the

[30:05] actual transformation that's happening

[30:07] inside you and that's where the Guru

[30:09] starts becomes something that is within

[30:11] you and we here in gurbani as well so

[30:15] satgur pereira marin allah hi my true

[30:19] guru is with me all the time

[30:21] jeté katha menu let you die wherever I

[30:24] may be it saves me it rescues me it it

[30:28] frees me from the things that bind me

[30:31] down so the Guru is always with you

[30:34] whether you've ever heard any spiritual

[30:37] wisdom in you in your entire life

[30:39] whether you you've been brought up and

[30:41] you thought you're an atheist or whether

[30:42] you are religious or spiritual whatever

[30:45] you think you are remember the ability

[30:48] to change from darkness to light is

[30:50] already sitting there dormant resting

[30:52] within all of us and so the Guru is

[30:55] something that is a process of

[30:56] transformation within us as well so

[30:59] think about the external guru as a

[31:02] catalyst to awaken the internal guru to

[31:05] to have that internal transformation

[31:07] itself we have to now understand that

[31:11] this whole verse of an unsub is a

[31:14] transformation process that's going to

[31:16] be happening inside of us so what is

[31:18] happening within within us we see in the

[31:21] next lines of an unsub satgur Tobias

[31:24] edge say p manova d'Ivoire Danya the

[31:27] true guru was obtained with tranquility

[31:30] and songs of celebration resound within

[31:34] the mind so now we're starting to

[31:37] understand what is the Guru delivering

[31:39] the Guru comes with stillness with ch

[31:44] with tranquility with steadiness I

[31:47] remember when I was a child and there

[31:52] was someone's house that I used to go to

[31:53] who had this huge grandfather clock and

[31:57] I remember seeing the grandfather clock

[31:59] having this pendulum that would just

[32:01] swing from side to side and as a child I

[32:04] could look at it for such a long time

[32:06] and be completely hypnotized by this

[32:10] thing that was just moving from

[32:12] scientist

[32:13] and I would only snap out of it

[32:17] when the clock would strike at a

[32:20] particular hour and then the the bells

[32:23] or the chimes would ring and that would

[32:25] make me kind of wake up and realize oh

[32:27] I've just been looking at this thing for

[32:29] far too long

[32:30] and what that reminds me of is in life

[32:35] we're kind of thinking like that in the

[32:36] same way we're completely hypnotized by

[32:39] our emotions we're hypnotized by all the

[32:44] circumstances and the the changes that

[32:46] are happening in our life on a

[32:47] day-to-day basis we are hypnotized by

[32:50] our thoughts that are always swinging

[32:53] from left to right from making one

[32:56] decision or another from happy decide

[32:58] and all this change that's happening in

[33:00] our life we've become completely

[33:03] hypnotized by it we don't know how to

[33:05] snap out of it we think this is the

[33:07] ultimate reality and the Guru is like

[33:10] the gong that once the Guru says

[33:13] something it makes you step back it

[33:15] makes you realize and breaks that trance

[33:18] that you're in and you start to see

[33:20] things for what they really are how does

[33:23] the Guru do that we're told here that

[33:25] the Guru brings stillness brings a

[33:27] tranquility to our life and now we're

[33:30] not talking about some Zen like silence

[33:33] experience that's not what the Guru

[33:35] means by tranquility it means that when

[33:39] your mind is swinging from left to right

[33:41] moving this way and that way when you're

[33:44] always waking up and worrying about the

[33:46] next thing that you have to do the Guru

[33:48] gives you the ability to step back and

[33:51] as soon as you step back you're not

[33:53] swinging from left to right you're not

[33:55] swinging from from distress to pleasure

[33:58] you are having a moment of peace and

[34:02] tranquility and the more you're able to

[34:05] take on the wisdom of the Guru the more

[34:08] of that steadiness and tranquility you

[34:10] can have within your life and that

[34:13] steadiness takes on the qualities of

[34:17] having acceptance for the rat-race aware

[34:21] of life you're not being tied down by it

[34:24] you're not you

[34:25] you're not letting it weigh you down you

[34:28] know that it's there but you're

[34:31] accepting of it so you become an

[34:34] observer of life you are less resistant

[34:39] you're not constantly worried about the

[34:41] things that are happening you are

[34:43] participating in life but you're also

[34:45] taking a step back at the same time so

[34:48] you're able to with the guru's wisdom

[34:52] start to lead a life of no questioning

[34:57] and always worrying about am i doing the

[34:59] right thing in life is this right is

[35:01] this wrong you start to reduce your

[35:03] desires you start to reduce the amount

[35:06] of complaining that you're doing things

[35:08] don't always have to be given a label of

[35:11] being good or bad of should and

[35:14] shouldn't should not have had and must

[35:17] not these things don't necessarily have

[35:19] to be labels that you put on life you're

[35:22] just participating in life but you're

[35:24] taking a step back and you are observing

[35:26] life as something that is happening with

[35:29] lots of different changes but you don't

[35:32] necessarily need to get trapped or

[35:35] hypnotized by those things that are

[35:37] going on in life so this is the state of

[35:41] having this quality of tranquility in

[35:44] your life having virtues having

[35:47] compassion it's from this stillness that

[35:49] all of these new good qualities come out

[35:52] compassion peace patience humility all

[35:56] of these good qualities start to emerge

[35:58] in your life when you use the wisdom of

[36:01] the Guru to step back so when we start

[36:05] to look at an unsub we need to use this

[36:09] as an opportunity for us to also reflect

[36:12] on our life for us to awaken from our

[36:16] old ways of thinking to new ways of

[36:18] thinking for us to move from a state of

[36:22] being agitated all the time to being

[36:25] karma to being less resistant to the

[36:28] unpredictability of life and to be

[36:31] always in awareness that we have this

[36:37] guru in our life

[36:39] the very fact that you are right now

[36:42] present here listening to this message

[36:47] of the Guru it means that you are so

[36:50] lucky to have the opportunity to step

[36:53] back you've been given an opportunity to

[36:56] just take a moment to reflect on your

[36:58] life and that is a huge blessing in

[37:01] itself not everybody gets that I always

[37:03] like to think that there are almost 8

[37:06] billion people on the planet at any one

[37:09] time and out of those how many are

[37:11] completely hypnotized by their own lives

[37:14] and don't have the ability to just take

[37:17] a step back and think what is my life

[37:20] about should I really be so lost in

[37:24] attachment to myself my body my life my

[37:27] family my job my career my finances do I

[37:30] need to be so stuck with all these

[37:32] things or is there a way to have all

[37:34] those things to engage with all those

[37:36] things but also take a step back so this

[37:40] is what the Guru allows you to do we're

[37:41] so lucky to have that in our life now

[37:44] how do you find this glue how do you

[37:47] find this wisdom that does this for you

[37:50] and as we go along the verses of the

[37:53] announcing how the Guru enters our life

[37:56] how do we actually make sure that we

[37:59] retain this relationship with this guru

[38:01] as well so we're going to be looking at

[38:03] very practical processes about how we

[38:05] can achieve not just the Guru but the

[38:08] tranquility the Bliss the euphoria that

[38:11] the Guru gives in our life and in the

[38:13] upcoming verses we're gonna be hearing a

[38:14] lot about how this actually has very

[38:17] little to do with us this actually is

[38:20] something called grace so we're gonna be

[38:22] hearing a lot about grace of the Guru

[38:24] and how Guru is a grace in our life the

[38:27] very interesting thing that you'll

[38:28] notice in this as we go through the

[38:31] verses of an unsub is that this

[38:34] composition actually has many audiences

[38:37] it talks to many different people in

[38:39] many different perspectives so this

[38:42] opening verse we can hear is talking to

[38:44] mankind saying hey I found the Guru in

[38:47] my life and in other verses it's talking

[38:50] to the mind in other

[38:52] versus it's talking to the body in other

[38:55] verses it's talking to meditators and

[38:57] spiritual seekers so we will see how

[38:59] this beautifully is able to talk to so

[39:02] many different audiences and almost

[39:04] different stages of our life and so

[39:07] we'll be reflecting on this wisdom and

[39:09] we'll see how does this wisdom impact

[39:13] our life how are we gonna use this to

[39:15] reflect and make sure that the Guru is

[39:18] actually having this impact in our life

[39:20] itself think about this as almost the

[39:24] Guru not trying to sell you anything and

[39:26] I know whenever when it comes to

[39:28] spirituality is it's very often the case

[39:31] that people think this guy's trying to

[39:33] convince me of something he's trying to

[39:35] sell me something he's trying to make me

[39:38] do something that I don't want to do and

[39:40] I don't want you to think about an unsub

[39:42] in this way I want you to think about it

[39:44] as almost a song of celebration that you

[39:47] happen to be listening to you there's

[39:49] this person called guru amar das Qi and

[39:52] he's just singing with his real joy that

[39:56] look look what my life is like look at

[39:58] what I've been able to achieve with this

[40:01] bliss look what my mind feels like I

[40:04] wish you could also feel like this and

[40:07] this guru guru amar das ji is just

[40:11] singing and look at the words that he

[40:13] sees he's talking but look how much he

[40:14] talks about melodyinmusic he says mana

[40:17] Vijaya vadhana songs of celebration are

[40:19] resounding within the mind melodies and

[40:22] harmonies have come to sing the divine

[40:25] word and he says sing the words of Hari

[40:27] he tells us everybody if you want to

[40:30] feel like this you need to sing like me

[40:32] if you want to feel what I'm feeling you

[40:34] need to be do what you need to be doing

[40:36] what I'm doing and what he says is you

[40:38] need to make your life into a song of

[40:41] bliss he says that my life has

[40:44] completely changed my mind is now

[40:46] constantly singing it feels like the

[40:48] whole world is singing and he's

[40:51] describing his euphoria he's describing

[40:54] his state of bliss and he says that the

[40:57] whole world is singing and my mind is

[41:00] singing so now that what the Guru is

[41:03] trying to do is trying to get you to

[41:04] understand the importance

[41:06] of another idea called keaston and a lot

[41:10] of the times again in spiritual

[41:11] practices we use this word prayer that

[41:14] you great you wake up in the morning and

[41:17] you pray or you wake up and throughout

[41:20] your day your life is a prayer to God

[41:22] and I think this word prayer really

[41:25] doesn't encapsulate what the good is

[41:27] trying to say here I think what the good

[41:29] is trying to say is we need to stop

[41:32] praying and start praising we need to

[41:36] start changing our mindset from always

[41:38] wanting to receive more which is what a

[41:40] prayer feels like most of the time

[41:42] sometimes we put our hands together and

[41:44] we'll look to the skies and we're saying

[41:46] oh Lord oh God

[41:47] my life is like this if I only you could

[41:49] add this to my life so you're making

[41:51] your life always you're always calling

[41:54] from a feeling of lack that my life

[41:57] needs to have more there's something

[41:59] missing in my life and that's what the

[42:01] the desperation of prayer feels like but

[42:04] the Guru is saying how about we move

[42:06] away from always asking to now praising

[42:09] make an attitude of gratitude make a

[42:13] mindset that I'm gonna sing about the

[42:17] things that I do have and not always

[42:19] worry about what I don't have and it's

[42:21] so easy for us to fall into the trap of

[42:23] worrying about what we don't have in our

[42:25] life so let's start bringing gratitude

[42:28] into our life let's start bringing joy

[42:31] let's start bringing peace and grace

[42:34] into our life and the Guru is training

[42:37] us that says everyday you need to do

[42:39] more of this you need to spend more time

[42:41] being in peace coming from a place of

[42:46] joy coming from a space of tranquility

[42:49] come from a space that your life already

[42:53] has quite a lot and it's so easy to

[42:56] think that you don't have so much in

[42:58] your life but really if you spend some

[43:00] time thinking about what do I have in my

[43:03] life

[43:03] what is going well in my life then you

[43:07] start to focus on those things instead

[43:09] so the Guru is training us that we need

[43:12] to interact with life in a different way

[43:15] so take every opportunity to

[43:20] celebrate life take every opportunity to

[43:23] sing about the great things that are

[43:25] happening in that day of yours rather

[43:28] than all the things that are not

[43:29] happening and worrying about those

[43:31] things the other thing that that the

[43:34] Guru is doing here is that he's not

[43:36] bringing this joy as something that's

[43:40] been brought to his life he's not

[43:41] thinking thinking about this joy is

[43:43] something that's coming he says that I

[43:45] am in bliss like the joy has come out of

[43:49] me and and it's so so easy and far too

[43:52] often for us to think about God and

[43:54] oneness as something that's far away but

[43:57] really do we even celebrate what we have

[44:01] just inside of us even if there's

[44:02] nothing outside of us that we can think

[44:04] about what about what's inside of us

[44:06] what about the joy of health what about

[44:09] the joy of having the opportunity to be

[44:13] alive right here right now how many

[44:17] times have you just been thankful to

[44:20] just be alive to be awake to see the

[44:24] sunrise or to be awake to enjoy the

[44:27] sound of the rain you know we don't

[44:29] really think about life in these ways so

[44:31] we're always resisting we're always

[44:34] fighting with life we're always

[44:35] complaining and guru is saying I'm in a

[44:38] different state of mind I'm not in this

[44:40] constant agitation I'm coming from a

[44:43] place of joy and bliss and your life can

[44:47] also be like that if you make your life

[44:49] more like a song so what we're being

[44:53] taught here in this first verse is start

[44:57] enjoying what is present in life and not

[45:00] always worrying about what is absent

[45:03] celebrate what you have celebrate the

[45:06] aliveness that's within you and all

[45:08] around you and start enjoying life as

[45:12] though it's a song like the birds are

[45:14] singing and the trees are swaying and

[45:16] the sun is shining or the rain is

[45:18] falling all these things are almost like

[45:20] the whole universe is singing all the

[45:23] time look at in jeopardy sight for those

[45:26] of you who are familiar

[45:27] it says gather power and paribas enter

[45:32] the

[45:33] air is singing water is singing fire is

[45:36] singing the whole universe is singing

[45:38] what if you were to start seeing life as

[45:41] though it's this great symphony this

[45:44] Orchestra that's happening all around

[45:45] you and then you realize hey I am also

[45:48] part of the band I'm also part of the

[45:50] orchestra

[45:51] I'm also an instrument that that has the

[45:53] ability to sing out loud and so when you

[45:55] start to change your life away from

[45:57] what's missing into what is there and

[45:59] celebrating what's there in life you'll

[46:02] start to experience what the Guru says

[46:05] Minova jihad anya my mind is celebrating

[46:09] and it says at the end the guru ends

[46:12] with these lines managin iva saya gihan

[46:15] nanak anand hawa those who start to

[46:19] think in this way those who make this

[46:21] their mindset nanak says their minds

[46:25] have become fruitful they've become

[46:28] joyful they've become blissful Anand has

[46:32] happened to them bliss has occurred in

[46:35] their life nanak says when Satguru

[46:38] papaya when you find that guru within

[46:40] your life so I hope that this first

[46:43] verse is something that you have found

[46:45] useful I hope that this helps you in

[46:48] your life and encourages you to start

[46:50] making those changes and reflecting on

[46:52] how you're living your life and gives

[46:55] you the practical steps that you need to

[46:57] try and move into a space of greater joy

[47:02] and greater bliss in your life I'm

[47:03] really looking forward to joining you on

[47:06] this journey so I hope you'll join me in

[47:08] the next episode and until then I've

[47:10] written a couple of questions that I

[47:12] want you to think about so as we're

[47:14] coming to the end of this have a go at

[47:16] these questions and either answer them

[47:18] by yourself write them down or talk

[47:20] about them with your friends or in a

[47:23] meetup group where you can discuss these

[47:25] ideas further discuss your understanding

[47:29] of the Guru's various forms

[47:32] the physical form the formless Universal

[47:36] essence and the mind transforming

[47:39] message how can we have a personal

[47:43] relationship with each of these forms

[47:46] and what daily practices can you adopt

[47:50] to increase gratitude and to reduce your

[47:54] mental resistance and expectations of

[47:56] life
