Where to Start with Maruna: A Beginner's Guide

**Start with the Voodoo album.** This is Maruna's debut full-length, released in September 2025, and it's the only place where you can hear their complete vision in one sitting. Eight tracks that establish what this Mainz-based metal band actually sounds like when they're not constrained to single-track releases. Skip the singles for now—they're scattered breadcrumbs compared to the full meal.

After Voodoo: Your Next Steps

Once you've absorbed the album, go to "Loa" (December 2024). This was the first signal that something was brewing, released almost a year before Voodoo dropped. It shows you where they started and lets you trace the evolution backward. The production choices here reveal what they decided to keep and what they refined for the album.

Then hit "Trance" (March 2025) and "Erzulie" (June 2025). These two singles bridged the gap between their initial statement and the full album. They're not throwaways—they're the band working out their identity in public, testing ideas that may or may not have made it onto Voodoo. Listen to them in chronological order. You'll hear a band finding its footing.

The recent "Abracadabra" single (October 2025) can wait. It arrived after Voodoo and likely points toward whatever they're doing next, which won't make sense until you understand where they've been.

What to Expect on First Listen

Modern metal production with precision over chaos. Maruna operates in the European metal tradition—more controlled than American brutality, more atmospheric than pure aggression. Don't expect innovation for innovation's sake. Expect a band that knows the genre's vocabulary and uses it intentionally.

The occult imagery in their titles (Voodoo, Loa, Erzulie, Trance) isn't window dressing. These aren't just cool-sounding words—they're references to Haitian Vodou spirits and practices, suggesting the band is building a thematic universe rather than grabbing random dark imagery from a grab bag.

The Most Common Misunderstanding

People see the sustainable merchandise angle and assume Maruna is trying to be "conscious metal" or selling a lifestyle brand first and music second. Wrong direction. They're a metal band that happens to care about the material culture around their work. The organic cotton T-shirts aren't the point—they're evidence of a band that thinks about every dimension of what they're putting into the world. Judge them on the music. The merchandise philosophy is a footnote, not a selling point.

When This Hits Hardest

Maruna lands when you're past the phase of needing metal to be shocking or transgressive. If you're young and want extremity for its own sake, this won't scratch that itch yet. But if you're at the point where you want metal that's well-constructed, thematically coherent, and doesn't waste your time with filler, Voodoo will click.

This is also music for when you're building something yourself—whether that's creative work, a business, or just your adult life. There's a workmanlike quality to Maruna's approach that resonates when you're in the trenches of your own project, trying to get every detail right.

Your One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Listen to Voodoo straight through. Take notes on which tracks grab you.

Day 2: Listen to Voodoo again while doing something else—cooking, commuting, working. See what sticks when you're not focusing.

Day 3: Listen to "Loa." Read about Loa spirits in Vodou tradition for ten minutes.

Day 4: Listen to "Trance" and "Erzulie" back-to-back. Note how the production differs from Voodoo.

Day 5: Return to your favorite three tracks from Voodoo. Figure out why they work for you.

Day 6: Listen to "Obscura" (October 2024) if you want to go deeper into their pre-album period.

Day 7: Put Voodoo on one more time. Decide if you're in or out.

That's the path. No shortcuts, no complications. Just a week with a new band's complete output.
