Bhakti Slow Flow Vinyasa: Yoga as Devotional Medicine

Govind Das

Hands come together at the heart, eyes close, and a low voice invites the room to take a few slow breaths into the chest before anything else happens. Birdsong runs underneath the instructions. Nothing is being rushed. In the 2020 class video from Bhakti Yoga Shala, Govind Das, the channel's co-director, leads a slow flow Bhakti vinyasa filmed at his home outside Los Angeles in springtime, with the sounds of the yard serving as the soundtrack. The practice moves through cat-cow, crab-style cobra, child's pose, downward dog, squats, planks, bridges, and a long run of forward folds, all paced to the breath and framed from the first minute as a prayer offered for the wider world. What makes the session worth studying is less the sequence than the premise underneath it: that a yoga class can be a dosage of care, administered one breath at a time, to a body and mind that have been under strain.

What does "Bhakti" add to a vinyasa class?

Bhakti is the Sanskrit word for devotion, and in a bhakti-oriented class the devotion is the organizing principle rather than an ornament at the start. The session opens with a prayer Govind Das asks the room to repeat: "may all beings including myself be happy be healthy free from suffering." The wording keeps going, extending the wish to thoughts, words, and actions, and asking that they "in some way contribute happiness and health." Then comes the offering: the practice is dedicated "as a prayer" in the spirit of "being a beneficial energy to the planet at this time of global crisis" (0:01 and 1:04 in the video).

That framing changes how every subsequent movement is meant to land. A forward fold stops being a hamstring stretch and becomes a gesture of humility. A held child's pose becomes a way of surrendering to the ground. The prayer sets an intention that the practice is not a performance to be perfected but an act of goodwill to be lived, and Govind Das returns to that intention between poses, asking students to notice whether they are practicing "mindfulness self-awareness compassion."

Why is this class so slow, and what is the point of the pace?

Anyone who has taken a fast vinyasa knows the rhythm: inhale, lift, exhale, fold, step back, repeat. Govind Das deliberately stretches that rhythm until each transition becomes its own small practice. "Anybody new to this, we just really like to take our time as we move through our journey," he tells the room, before adding the line that defines the session: "nothing rushed, just very patiently calming our frazzled nerves as we practice, just a very slow and loving and kind way" (roughly 3:06 in the video).

The slowness is doing physiological work as well as devotional work. When the movement is deliberately unhurried, the breath gets room to become the metronome. Govind Das asks students to take the breath "across the back of the throat" in ujjayi, the audible, ocean-like breath that many vinyasa teachers use to hold a steady internal tempo, and he is explicit about the aim: "consciously wake up that ujjayi breath," letting students "hear the sound of the breath," which "sounds like the ocean." In a slow class, that sound stays audible through the whole sequence, which means the attention never fully leaves the body.

He also builds in optional variation so that the pace never becomes a test. Students are invited to "make some snow circles," rolling the hips or ribcage, and to modify the holds: "if your heels don't get to the floor just put your hands down on the earth for more support." The phrase he uses for the whole approach is "feel good yoga." In his words, "we call it feel good yoga, want it to feel amazing." The goal is not to push past a limit but to find the version of each pose that the body can receive.

How does a single pose become a form of medicine?

Govind Das returns repeatedly to the idea of dosage. Near the midpoint of the class, after a long sequence of folds and returns to downward dog, he puts it plainly: "as we talked about it's like we're administering the sacred loving yogic medicine to ourselves in each pose" (around 15:15). The next line is the one that turns the metaphor into a method: "only you really know how you're feeling from the inside, so you have to administer each moment, each breath, each asana, just like the proper dosage of the medicine."

That is a meaningful shift in authority. A teacher can cue alignment from the front of the room, but the internal reading of a pose belongs to the student. The practice asks each person to calibrate: how much lift in the crab-style cobra, how deep the twist, how long to rest in child's pose before returning to all fours. The session's movements are simple and repeated, which makes that calibration easier to notice. Cat-cow comes back, then downward dog, then the crab cobra with its fingertips rising and "gentle twisting fluid motion feeling around sweet lubrication of joints." Repetition with attention is the method.

"We're administering the sacred loving yogic medicine to ourselves" — Govind Das, Bhakti Slow Flow Vinyasa class video, April 2020 (approx. 15:15)

Where does the yoga-as-science idea come into it?

Around the forty-minute mark, the teacher widens the frame and begins talking about what yoga is for. "A lot of people consider yoga science," he says, and the conversation moves toward sincerity and the question of how the practice connects a person to a larger order. He does not argue a doctrine. He describes practice as a way of paying attention, of reconnecting the body, breath, and intention until they are doing the same thing. That is the thread that runs from the opening prayer to the closing minutes: practice as a discipline of noticing rather than achieving.

It also explains why the session carries a sense of spiritual company. Govind Das addresses the room as "soul family" and speaks of practicing consciously "right here, right now," reaching toward students he cannot see. Filmed for a camera in a home rather than a studio, the class carries its intimacy openly. The backyard sounds are not a backdrop; they are part of the teaching. The class asks students to be present in the same place they are actually sitting.

Why does this video matter now?

The video was published on April 3, 2020, and its context is the early weeks of a global crisis that many people were meeting from inside their homes. The prayer names that crisis directly. The setting, a living room or yard with birds in the background, reflected the conditions of the moment. For viewers who were newly isolated, anxious, or simply out of their usual routines, a practice built on patience and small, repeated movements offered something specific: a way to tend to the nervous system without demanding a performance.

The video's modest view count, 1,503 at the time of this writing, is itself a reminder that most devotional yoga is not made for an audience. It is made for a practice. A reader who wants to take the approach into their own mat can start with three habits drawn directly from the session: open with a prayer or intention, slow each transition until the breath can lead it, and treat every pose as a dose you are calibrating from the inside rather than a shape you are completing.

Where to go from here

If the idea of a devotional, feel-good slow flow appeals to you, the most useful next step is to practice rather than to read further. Set aside the full length of the class, or a shorter version of it, and begin with the prayer. Let the cat-cow and downward dog be slow enough that you can hear your ujjayi breath. When a pose asks for more than you have, use the modification he offers: hands to the floor, a softer bend, a longer rest in child's pose. Notice, at the end, how you feel from the inside. That is the only measurement the teacher says really matters. For more on the teaching behind the video, watch the full recording from Bhakti Yoga Shala and return to the moments that stood out to you, including the opening prayer at 0:01 and the dosage passage near 15:15.

[7:56] to the earth as we exit out okay we'll

[7:59] start with a Crabby style Cobra so hands

[8:03] outside of your mat come up on all ten

[8:05] fingertips hey your elbows are and your

[8:09] arms are like your crab arms lift your

[8:12] heart and then I usually find myself

[8:17] just gently swaying side to side maybe a

[8:23] turn up the head side to side as with

[8:25] all - you don't want to feel any

[8:29] straining in your back here all this

[8:32] stuff you actually wanted to feel

[9:47] and then try a few times flat back

[9:51] lengthen on your inhale and then empty

[9:55] the breath and forward forward is you

[9:58] back so couple more turn leg head inhale

[10:03] fill up your lungs gently stretch your

[10:06] lung and then exhale empty the breath

[10:09] navel in squeeze all the air out of your

[10:12] look last night lengthen as you breathe

[10:17] out

[10:19] fold forward as you breathe out and in

[10:23] these nice slow movements you can really

[10:25] measure and stretch your breaths out in

[10:28] relationship to the movie all right

[10:31] everybody let's walk our hands back to a

[10:35] plank pose top of a push-up take a full

[10:40] inhale

[10:41] one more time let's lower down as we

[10:44] exhale crabby style Cobra number two

[10:48] hands wide slightly forward rise on up

[10:54] do a little sway those of y'all that are

[10:57] familiar I commonly like to bend the

[11:00] back knee and turn over the shoulder

[11:03] gentle twist try it a couple times each

[11:07] side if that works for you can you feel

[11:13] yourself

[11:14] as we are he's awesome is just unwinding

[11:19] unny tensing you take it in how let's

[11:24] press back to Child's Pose one more time

[11:28] as we exhale just that sweet surrender

[11:34] sweet grounding all right everybody back

[11:42] up to all fours on the end how and look

[11:46] up nice take that curl the toes downward

[11:51] dog as we exhale hey this time hi tippy

[11:56] toes in hell and then just walk your

[12:00] feet up between your hands as you

[12:01] excellent a long spine flat back

[12:05] shoulders back inhale oh if we're going

[12:09] to empty the breath as you accident yeah

[12:13] let's try this a couple times hands to

[12:16] prayer at the heart as you inhale

[12:19] lengthen exhale grab the ankles food

[12:25] fluid really when we're like that prayer

[12:29] to heart lengthen as you breathe in the

[12:34] empty breath grab ankles gently squeeze

[12:37] as you breathe out then last two like

[12:40] this the arms behind you fingers spread

[12:45] and point towards the back of your mat

[12:47] we heart forward shoulders roll back

[12:50] inhale exhale grab ankles and gently

[12:55] squeeze in either exhale let's try that

[13:00] one last time

[13:01] hands behind you a flat back shoulders

[13:05] back inhale now listen interlace your

[13:07] fingers

[13:08] as you exhale fold

[13:11] lift your hands off your lower back

[13:13] stretch your arms to win it straight I'm

[13:18] gonna take about five breaths here keep

[13:20] those knees bad you want a gentle twist

[13:24] Bobble of the head feel free hi anybody

[13:31] ahah mouth breath how about ah-ah

[13:37] taking it in out you let your hand slide

[13:42] down as you exhale flat back as you

[13:47] breathe in like the exhale walk yourself

[13:51] back to downward-facing dog

[13:54] pause there find your breath

[13:58] here we go ready top of a push-up as we

[14:03] breathe in Japanese if needed lower as

[14:07] you breathe out one last time is krabi

[14:10] style Cobra fingertips rise maybe some

[14:17] gentle twisting fluid motion feeling

[14:24] around sweet lubrication of joints

[14:30] inspire take it home and then lower down

[14:35] exhale take it how Child's Pose again as

[14:40] we exhale

[14:47] so as we talked about it's like we're

[14:50] administering the sacred loving yogic

[14:54] medicine to ourselves and each pose

[14:58] let's come on back up to Child's Pose in

[15:02] how down dog as we exhale only you

[15:06] really know how you're feeling from the

[15:09] inside so you have to administer each

[15:12] moment each breath each asana just like

[15:15] the proper dosage of the medicine where

[15:19] it's like a massage right there's so

[15:20] many different ways to massage we're

[15:22] practicing this slow flow which is more

[15:25] of like a gentle massage but in the same

[15:29] way you just have to apply just the

[15:31] right amount of pressure so that it

[15:33] works for you all right here's our first

[15:36] flow everybody right leg reaches back as

[15:40] we breathe in and right foot steps all

[15:44] the way up and through as we breathe

[15:46] uh-huh we're gonna drop our left knee so

[15:51] we starting a low lunge you can even

[15:55] take a few breaths to get into these

[15:58] poses rise on up arms up overhead

[16:01] interlace all the fingers except the

[16:03] index fingers point on sink the hips

[16:06] lift the name a little core support take

[16:10] one in through the prayer I'm still a

[16:15] devotion emotion bhakti on the mat

[16:18] exhale hands down tuck your left toes in

[16:21] let's twist right chest rolls open as we

[16:27] breathe okay exhale right hand down left

[16:33] knee jabs hip shift dock right leg

[16:37] straight a half split spoon take a

[16:41] breath or two soon as you like

[16:46] feel good yoga feel good you're alright

[16:50] take it inhale to your kidneys as you

[16:53] exhale bend your right knee place your

[16:57] right foot on the floor and step

[16:58] straight into a Halfmoon pose ardha

[17:02] chandrasana

[17:05] anybody want variations always available

[17:10] for you bending the left knee grabbing

[17:14] top of foot we've been bringing left

[17:17] hand I'm sorry right hand off of the

[17:18] floor to shin so many possible

[17:21] variations take a full inhale hey left

[17:27] hand down left foot steps to the back of

[17:30] the mat as we exhale

[17:32] he left knee drops left knee bends big

[17:38] rainbow with your right arm up and back

[17:40] and see if you can touch your left foot

[17:43] bubble breaths here

[17:47] right chest rolls open maybe turn the

[17:50] head side to side a couple times about

[17:54] sinking the hips take one in left foot

[17:59] and write him down as you X like poses

[18:04] you here no lower slow as you accent

[18:10] Cobra any version or upward dog as you

[18:15] know sweet gentle loving massage

[18:19] downward dog anybody want extra push up

[18:24] or two to get back to down dog it is

[18:28] there for you ah find your breath

[18:33] everybody find your breath take your

[18:37] down dog spread those fingers roll the

[18:39] shoulders away from each other we

[18:42] emphasize made a long spine over trying

[18:46] to get the heels to the floor yeah you

[18:49] want to keep that spine long so sitting

[18:51] bones will tilt up towards the sky and

[18:53] to do that you may need to bend those

[18:55] knees a little bit any let's try left

[18:59] side here we go enough leg Rises as we

[19:02] in you step that left foot all the way

[19:05] up and few left drop your right knee

[19:09] over a breath or two or three hip stay

[19:13] down navel in inhale arms all the way up

[19:17] overhead interlace fingers except the

[19:21] index finger drop shoulders but lift

[29:08] house low flow it's honey like fluidity

[29:14] as we transition pose-to-pose and it's

[29:19] the slowness not to be lazy optional

[29:22] push-ups slowness to be mindful slowness

[29:27] to bring more bhakti to create space for

[29:30] bhakti to emerge slowed us so it really

[29:34] becomes a meditative process let's try

[31:14] Cobra as you inhale navel draws in

[31:18] anytime you back parents who support the

[31:20] court exhale optional push-ups downward

[31:25] dog theater whoo everybody go whoo

[31:31] yes the left side and then we're out

[31:34] left leg reaches back yeah the big step

[31:40] through on the exhale drop the knee big

[31:47] that brother long rough maybe arch this

[31:51] is so calming to nervous system exhale

[31:54] through the prayer hounds down tuck your

[31:58] right toes lift your knee inhale left

[32:18] step onto that left foot left fingertip

[32:22] right leg floats halfway up right arm up

[32:25] extend your lines nice and long one

[32:28] breath in exhale hands down right foot

[32:34] way back drop your right knee in a

[32:38] rainbow left arm right knee bends

[32:41] exhale grab the right foot sink those

[32:45] hips inhale roll open an arch exhale

[32:51] hand and foot down plank pose yeah

[32:57] axel isn't it sweet not to bulldoze

[33:00] through our body but to really feel and

[33:04] listen like any loving relationship

[33:08] should have those qualities

[33:10] down-dog optional push-ups as you're

[33:14] ready

[33:14] meet together and dog when you get

[33:17] yourself there oh and once you get

[33:22] yourself there everybody just step your

[33:24] right foot up between your hands spin

[33:26] your left foot flop crawl yourself in

[33:30] between your legs

[33:32] let's take five breaths and then any

[33:37] variation you choose you could grab I'm

[33:39] gonna grab my ankles today some people

[33:41] even like to go upside down headstand no

[33:46] yeah we always love to remind ourselves

[33:48] that fancier doesn't necessarily mean

[33:52] better it's not even really about the

[33:55] asana everybody the awesome is just a an

[34:00] opportunity to see ourselves from a

[34:02] different angle and perspective each

[34:05] asana offers us an opportunity as we

[34:09] always talked about everybody if you're

[34:10] upside-down come on down

[34:12] crawl your hands back to your right foot

[34:15] stand the hips here walk your right foot

[34:18] to the right edge of your mat right edge

[34:20] of your mat drop your left knee down

[34:22] let's take that lizard or dragon stretch

[34:25] as it's called and drop your forearms

[34:27] don't even let your right knee roll to

[34:29] the right of Oh like we talked about

[34:34] there's no levels in this stuff there's

[34:36] no level one there's no level two no

[34:38] level three it's not about the awesome

[34:41] of the awesome 'it is merely just a tool

[34:44] for us of shape for us a form for us to

[34:49] practice cultivating these different

[34:51] qualities you know whether you're the

[34:54] first time ever doing yoga you've been

[34:55] doing yoga for decades doesn't matter

[34:58] the asana is just an opportunity to

[35:02] practice whether it's breath whether

[35:04] it's focus whether it's my

[35:05] whether it's devotion whether it's

[35:07] patience whether it's calm whether it's

[35:10] presence whether it's strength whether

[35:12] it's courage whether it's how to be calm

[35:14] in a difficult situation

[35:16] that's what asana enables us to practice

[35:20] everybody let's switch legs crawl

[35:22] yourself up walk your right foot towards

[35:26] the center step your right foot back

[35:28] step your left leg forward walk your

[35:32] left foot to the left edge of the mat

[35:33] does that make sense so we're kind of

[35:35] unwire in our selves you know yoga's

[35:39] it's not a sport it's not a competition

[35:41] it's not like as I always like to say

[35:44] you don't get more yoga practical points

[35:47] if you go deeper into a pose or if you

[35:49] do faster your pose I mean could you

[35:50] imagine hey it's a healing art form it's

[35:56] an opportunity for us to work and

[35:58] reshape and mold ourselves and

[36:01] recalibrate our energies what a

[36:05] beautiful experience it can be when we

[36:07] take our practice when we completely get

[36:10] out of a competitive mindset even with

[36:12] ourselves and as we said earlier you

[36:16] know let the let the physical fitness

[36:19] elements of it let that be just a

[36:22] byproduct let those calm second nature

[36:24] just as a within the process of doing

[36:28] his awesomeness don't focus on it really

[36:30] so much as that just simply be present

[36:34] with everything that you're doing in the

[36:36] fullness of your heart good job let's

[36:39] crawl ourselves up slowly one last time

[36:42] everybody walk your left foot in between

[36:44] your hands downward facing dog pose

[36:48] pause there let's try plank inhale lower

[36:55] to the earth exhale our last video a

[36:58] Cobra or upward dog

[37:02] how and downward-facing dog

[37:05] optional push-ups as we exhale so we

[37:09] want our yoga to be sustainable we want

[37:13] to be practicing until we're gosh 108

[37:17] years old right who wants to be a

[37:19] hundred years old someday I do because I

[37:21] love this life so much I want to be with

[37:24] my friends and my family and my beloved

[37:26] satsang let's live to a hundred eight

[37:29] everybody although it's always in God's

[37:31] plan isn't it

[37:32] let's bring ourselves up we're gonna

[37:34] bring the soles of our feet together

[37:36] once we get to a seated position ha nice

[37:41] play out to the sides grab on to feet

[37:46] take your heart forward in how forward

[37:52] forward as we act so now is where we

[37:54] commonly we go into our affirmations

[37:57] because affirmations are such a great

[38:00] tool for us to keep the mind straight

[38:02] you know I was just reading what is this

[38:04] chapter 6 XI locus 6 in the

[38:06] bhagavad-gita your mind is your best

[38:10] friend or your worst enemy everybody we

[38:14] know this we've seen where our mind can

[38:17] take us in anxiety and worry and fear

[38:21] your mind is a very powerful instrument

[38:25] your best friend or your worst enemy

[38:27] when we have some control over our mind

[38:30] as fishing guides us in the

[38:34] bhagavad-gita use these practices of

[38:37] yoga to control your mind your mind

[38:39] becomes your best friend harness the

[38:42] powers of the mind so that we could

[38:45] choose our perceptions we can cultivate

[38:50] a refined quality within our own

[38:52] perceptual awareness and that our

[38:54] perceptions are connected to our

[38:56] spiritual heart how we want to see the

[38:59] world

[39:02] take it inhale everybody how about a

[39:05] loss EXO maybe squeeze it a little bit

[39:09] deeper feel it feel it feel it and then

[39:14] bring yourself up slowly slowly and then

[39:18] once you get yourself up everybody let's

[39:21] stay in a seat I just lift our legs off

[39:26] of the floor why not a little bit of

[39:28] belly work arms like still here oh how

[39:33] are you guys doing y'all having fun yet

[39:35] let's do this why not send the prayer

[39:39] out we do what we can to be a beneficial

[39:42] energy to all others

[39:44] it's not even for ourselves it's not

[39:46] even for us it's so that we can serve

[39:50] everybody else with a greater depth of

[39:53] love and intentionality everybody let's

[39:56] go halfway down in hell and then done

[40:00] the knees and rise up backs let's try

[40:02] five is how halfway down and then exhale

[40:06] rise up to inhale half way down exhale

[40:11] rise up three why not in how half way

[40:15] down exhale rise up for you now half way

[40:20] down actually I'll rise up five in how

[40:24] half way down stay there interlace your

[40:27] fingers behind the back here though five

[40:29] four three two one relax just feel your

[40:37] body buzz and vibrating rhythm with

[40:41] gee the truth is that it is a gift to be

[40:46] alive everyone as this coronavirus has

[40:52] taught us we never ever ever know where

[40:56] the next breath or step or a week or day

[40:59] or Mach will take us or our loved ones

[41:01] everybody a bridge close here lift your

[41:04] pelvis anybody want a wheel pose you can

[41:08] interlace your fingers for bridge or

[41:11] just keep your arms down by your sides

[41:12] as you like we never ever ever know

[41:18] where our next breath or step will take

[41:21] us or my loved ones all we have is the

[41:24] present moment wake up wake up as the

[41:29] great seat near a bus and wake up and

[41:31] make this temple of flesh and bones

[41:37] sanctum for the Lord taking in now

[41:42] wherever you are

[41:44] exhale everything down cactus your arms

[41:49] and then just a gentle side to side

[41:54] windshield wiper motion the old saying

[42:00] if you protect the Dharma the Dharma

[42:06] will protect you

[42:09] what is the Dharma the Dharma is just

[42:13] the universal way of goodness the laws

[42:18] of the universe try one more time living

[42:23] with integrity living in truth doing

[42:25] good serving others living our own

[42:31] purpose we've got a happy baby pose turn

[42:34] the soles of the feet up towards the sky

[42:39] nice layout and out and that to live

[42:46] dharmically didn't it there I don't know

[42:49] I a lot of people consider yoga science

[42:52] but I think there's just a lot of faith

[42:55] in it as well - of it my feeling my

[43:00] faith is that if I live in the right way

[43:02] that there is some protective force in

[43:05] the universe that is were able to just

[43:09] support me in the journey of life it's

[43:13] like just where are you gonna live

[43:15] vibrational you're gonna live an eight

[43:17] and anger and fear of course the

[43:19] universe is going to send you those

[43:20] types of experiences in life you live in

[43:23] love and joy and truth and honesty and

[43:26] sincerity I guess what the universe is a

[43:29] big reflection a big mirror it's gonna

[43:32] send you different kinds of experiences

[43:34] in life look there's always going to be

[43:36] work to do there's always gonna be

[43:38] challenges that's for sure

[43:40] that's we're all finding out

[43:43] everybody take it in how squeeze your

[43:46] right knee into your chest exhale left

[43:48] leg straight spinal twist right knee

[43:52] across your body right arm out to your

[43:57] right

[44:01] I know everybody I'm talking a lot

[44:08] hopefully it's all making sense and

[44:12] really I'm talking cuz I need to hear it

[44:14] more than anybody else that's for sure I

[44:17] am just fumbling on this path I need to

[44:22] hear these these words more than anybody

[44:25] I need oh just the Dharma that's for

[44:31] sure let's switch sides everybody

[44:34] switch sides squeeze your left knee take

[44:42] the left knee across then open the left

[44:45] arm out to the left

[44:50] beloved Randolph says we're all just

[44:52] walking each other home that's the

[44:57] beauty of such song that's the beauty of

[44:59] all being together soul family we have

[45:02] each other to lean on and support each

[45:06] other through this journey of life right

[45:11] everybody let's come on back down the

[45:13] center if you need anything else at this

[45:15] point just give yourself that time any

[45:19] final poses otherwise as you're ready

[45:23] stand your legs towards straight take

[45:26] your arms down by your sides turn your

[45:29] palms up towards the sky wiggle and

[45:32] jiggle around a bit just to find your

[45:35] sweet spot that we can take rest

[45:46] let's give ourselves a few minutes

[45:57] was our eyes and consciously practice

[46:05] softening literally just scanning

[46:09] through your body not just even your

[46:13] body into your mind into your heart

[46:18] anywhere you may notice just any

[46:21] gripping any tightening any clutching

[46:27] and tensing now is your time to on tense

[46:37] intense yourself just reminding yourself

[46:42] in this moment right here right now

[46:44] you're safe and that it's okay to be

[46:47] balanced regardless of whatever's

[46:51] happened in the past whatever traumas

[46:55] have happened in the past in this moment

[46:57] right here right now you're safe to

[47:03] relax safe for that girl

[47:07] see if - I'm tense

[47:11] save 200 safe to unclutch

[47:21] as beyond grill unclutch and I'm tense

[47:28] you are yourself slide into very sublime

[47:37] serene meditative inner space

[47:47] there's nothing to do and nowhere to go

[47:49] and no one to impress

[47:51] nothing to it

[47:59] just feel the soft hand another divine

[48:03] holding you up in this

[48:07] your heart is beating breath is

[48:10] breathing

[48:10] that is God's love for you without you

[48:17] doing anything that is God's grace

[48:31] God's grace is actually always divine

[48:34] grace is always

[48:39] you need to relax and be intense and

[48:41] unclutch more amidst our lives possibly

[48:48] walk through life with a greater sense

[48:51] of ease even immense challenges we know

[48:55] challenges are gonna convict on every

[48:57] day one shape or form or another

[49:05] I'm gonna practice bringing love and

[49:11] nonreactive even into the challenges

[49:19] practice responding to life's

It is a vinyasa class in which the movement is slowed and organized around devotion, opening with a prayer and dedicating the practice to others. In Govind Das's 2020 video, each transition is paced to the breath and treated as a gentle act of self-care rather than a performance.
He uses the phrase to describe the approach of a slow, supportive practice where the aim is for the pose to feel good and even amazing. Students are encouraged to modify poses, rest when needed, and find the version their body can receive.
In the video Govind Das says practitioners are 'administering the sacred loving yogic medicine to ourselves' in each pose. He compares each moment, breath, and asana to a proper dosage, emphasizing that the student is the one who can feel how they are doing from the inside.
Govind Das leads the room in a prayer: may all beings, including myself, be happy, be healthy, and be free from suffering. The class is then offered as a prayer for the planet during a time of global crisis, with the hope that thoughts, words, and actions contribute happiness and health.
Govind Das describes ujjayi as taking the breath across the back of the throat so that it creates an audible sound, which he compares to the ocean. Keeping this breath audible through a slow sequence helps keep attention on the body and gives the movement a steady rhythm.
Yes. Govind Das explicitly says anyone new to the practice should take their time, and he offers modifications such as placing hands on the floor in a squat if the heels don't reach the ground. The emphasis is on patience and self-awareness rather than advanced shapes.
The class was filmed at Govind Das and Radha's home outside Los Angeles, California, in the springtime, with birdsong and outdoor sounds included as part of the soundtrack. It was published on April 3, 2020.
