Why Fear of Success Can Be a Family Loyalty Problem

Roy Masters
Roy Masters
Dec 22, 2025
10 min read
Watch · 7

A twenty-three-year-old caller says he is burned out. He once played music, he says, but his mother put that ambition into him, and now he has a small recording studio in Louisiana with some friends and cannot shake a feeling he describes as "a mental pingpong game" going on inside his head. Roy Masters, the host of the Adviceline program, cuts through the vagueness with a question that lands like a diagnosis: "Have you ever been successful?" The answer is "Uh, no." What follows, in the roughly twenty-eight minutes captured in this Program 4349 excerpt, is a sustained argument that the young man's stalled drive is tethered to unresolved resentment toward his mother, that his goals may not be his own, and that success itself can feel like failure when it serves someone else's will. It is a call-in radio session built on confrontation and rapid-fire questioning, and it is worth understanding on its own terms, including the places where its certainty runs well ahead of its evidence.

What kind of program is this, and what does it promise?

Masters opens by setting the terms. The program, he says, is about "whatever's wrong with you in your family life," and if listeners stay with it, they will see "through me speaking to other people with problems similar to yours exactly what your problems are about." He adds a warning that many listeners will recognize from call-in psychology: "it can be very disturbing." That disclaimer is the first craft choice worth noticing. It tells the audience the exchange will feel uncomfortable, and that discomfort is part of the method.

The method itself is a kind of Socratic interrogation delivered at radio speed. Masters rarely lets a caller finish a vague sentence. When the young man says he has "this uh lack of motivation," Masters asks whether he has ever been pushed, and whether parents or school have been "in the background pushing." When the caller says he feels "heavy anxiety all the time," Masters interrupts with the question that organizes the rest of the call: "Who's playing? Who are the players? What are the players doing?" That is a genuinely useful question. It turns a free-floating feeling into a set of actors with roles, which is where a conversation can start to get concrete.

How does a fear of success get traced back to a parent?

The central move comes early, around the one-minute mark, when the caller admits his mother "put that into me" regarding music. Masters reframes the admission sharply: "in other words you don't know your own goals and dreams," and the caller agrees. The logic is that an ambition absorbed from a parent is not yet an ambition you have chosen. Masters then pushes further, to the point that the caller is in music and the mother's influence must connect to it. "So therefore it won't be you that will be achieving this," he says. "It will be a mother achieving her own will through you."

This is a recognizable idea in family-systems thinking: that children can live out a parent's unmet goals and then feel stuck when their own achievements begin to look like the parent's. The distinctive part of Masters' version is what he thinks follows. If success is someone else's project, then succeeding means completing a task you never chose, and the mind may resist it. The caller describes the same pattern from the inside, saying he "really identified" with another caller's story, and that he had "gotten away from" music "in a real willful way."

Masters' rebuttal to that move is the most useful thing in the excerpt. Getting away from a parent's expectations is not the same as resolving them. "If you're just away from the music and you haven't really solved the problem," he says, quoting the rebellious version of the young man's story back to him, "you give it up and you do something else." In other words, rejection can be just as tethered as compliance. The person who quits the piano to spite a parent is still organized around the parent.

What does "a right built around a wrong" mean?

The clearest concept in the call is also the most quotable. The caller describes being "caught in the church for a while," with "this right and wrong image." Masters pounces: "You don't know how to be right without being rigid." Then he names the structure underneath it: "You see, in other words, you're building a right around a wrong."

"You see, in other words, you're building a right around a wrong. … And the wrong is hating your mother. And the wrong of hating your mother has created a guilt towards your mother, and the guilt makes you want to please her." (Roy Masters, Adviceline Radio, Program 4349, around 3:37 and following)

Read carefully, this is a chain of cause and effect. Unacknowledged resentment produces guilt. Guilt produces a need to please. The need to please produces rigidity, whether that rigidity takes the form of religious certainty or of an ambition that is never quite one's own. Masters argues the caller's religious life was "an attempt to cover up the guilt of hating your mother," and the caller, to his credit, appears to recognize the pattern: "I see all that just, you know, clear as day." The word "right" in the phrase is the important one. It names the bargain people make when they try to be good in order to feel safe from a feeling they haven't looked at.

The people-pleasing thread follows directly. The caller says he has "a lot of trouble standing up to people." Masters generalizes: "anytime you have a willful woman or willful person like your mother, you react the same way. You end up being a people pleaser." Here the idea is useful as a hypothesis, even if it is stated more sweepingly than the caller's own story supports.

Why would success feel like failure?

The most striking claim in the excerpt is the one the caller himself states in plainer words: "success would simply … that means that you failed." Masters makes it explicit: "deep down inside, you know, success is failure." His reasoning is that if the caller succeeds in a field he was pushed into, the success serves his mother's will and not his own. "It will only be serving an a um a will that is not your own," he says, "a purpose that is not a divine purpose, not a purpose that you were not created for."

The language of divine purpose is the host's frame, not a neutral psychological finding, and listeners who do not share it can still take the core observation seriously. Fear of success is a documented experience in which people sabotage or drain their own accomplishments. What Masters adds is a specific source: achievement that belongs to someone else feels like a loss of self. The caller also says he finds it hard to care about the career at all: "I don't really care about that though." Masters answers with a more ambitious claim, that the young man "may be destined to be a great musician or violinist," which he then reframes as irrelevant so long as the resentment remains. "As long as you resent your mother, you're locked into her will and you cannot do what you were created" to do.

Where does the argument overreach?

This is where a careful reader has to slow down. Around the seven-minute mark, Masters widens the lens from one family to a general theory of gender and power: "there's a will of the world too. And guess where that will of the world operates? It operates through women." He goes on to say that men "call on that will" and that "men's will is not their own will," and he attributes the ambitions of fathers to the influence of mothers. That is a sweeping generalization, offered without evidence in the excerpt, and it goes well beyond the caller's situation. The caller says only "I see it." Nothing in this 28-minute excerpt tests the claim against other families, other experiences, or other explanations.

There are other limits. Masters makes strong judgments about a stranger's inner life after a few minutes of answers, and he interrupts the caller repeatedly, sometimes before the caller has finished describing what he feels. He also says things like "your father needed his ego stroked," which is a claim about a person the host has never met. Radio call-ins can be bracing, and some listeners may find the directness useful. But the format rewards confident pronouncement over the slower work of checking whether a theory fits the person in front of you.

It is also worth noting what the excerpt does not contain. The caller describes constant anxiety, burnout, and a mind that won't stop. Those are real and serious experiences, and the transcript gives no indication of how long they have lasted or how they affect daily functioning. A family-dynamics explanation may be part of the picture, but it is not a substitute for an assessment by a licensed clinician.

What can a listener take from the call?

Three ideas are worth keeping, and they can be tested without accepting the whole framework.

  • Ask whose goal it is. Masters' central question, "you don't know your own goals and dreams," works as a self-check. If an ambition feels like an obligation tied to a parent's approval, that feeling is information.
  • Rebellion is not resolution. Quitting a path to spite someone keeps that person in charge. The question is not whether you reject their expectations but whether you have stopped organizing your life around them.
  • Notice the guilt that makes you please. The chain Masters describes, from resentment to guilt to people-pleasing, is a pattern worth examining in your own life, even if you doubt its origin story.

The excerpt ends before the host reaches what he calls "the thought I want to leave you with," at roughly 27 minutes into the program. A second caller, about a child and schooling, begins around the 14-minute mark, but the fragments provided are too disjointed to summarize fairly. Anyone who wants the full logic of the program would need the complete recording.

Where to go from here

If this exchange resonated, start with the question Masters asks most often: who is playing, and what is each player doing? Write down the expectations you believe you are carrying, and mark which ones you chose. Watch the full Program 4349 recording from Perilous World Radio to hear the host's closing thought in context. And if the anxiety described in the call, the constant "mental pingpong," is affecting your sleep, work, or relationships, speak with a licensed therapist or physician. A good clinician can test the family-resentment idea against your actual life, which is a more reliable test than any single radio call.

[0:00] My name is Roy Masters for the new

[0:02] listeners just joining us. And this

[0:04] program is about uh whatever's wrong

[0:07] with you in your family life. And if

[0:10] you'll listen very attentively for the

[0:12] next 28 minutes, you'll see through me

[0:17] speaking to other people with problems

[0:18] similar to yours exactly what your

[0:20] problems are about.

[0:22] And I must say as a point of warning

[0:26] that it can be very disturbing.

[0:30] So with that I'll take my first call.

[0:34] Hello, this is Roy Master speaking. You

[0:36] have a fear of success you say?

[0:38] >> Yes.

[0:40] Um

[0:41] I uh I don't know exactly what I was

[0:44] going to tell you. I just know that I

[0:46] have this uh lack of motivation.

[0:49] >> Have you ever been successful? Uh, no.

[0:52] >> So,

[0:53] >> I'm I'm young. I'm I'm only 23 and I'm

[0:56] just realizing that I'm so burned out

[0:58] and I just

[0:59] >> In other words, have you been pushed?

[1:01] >> Um,

[1:02] >> have your parents parents school

[1:04] something in the background pushed you?

[1:06] >> I see. I just I feel like I I lost it

[1:08] all in school, you know. I really

[1:10] identified with one guy that you talked

[1:12] to on another tape with the same kind of

[1:13] thing. just kind of I was I was in music

[1:17] also and I know that my mom put that

[1:19] into me and um

[1:20] >> in other words you don't know your own

[1:22] goals and dreams

[1:24] >> right

[1:24] >> from hers you think you end up doing

[1:27] what she wants you to do and and

[1:31] >> I' I've really gotten away from all that

[1:33] you know I've been up at the ranch and

[1:34] I've just kind of I gotten away from I

[1:36] did I do have a little business in

[1:38] Louisiana with some friends

[1:40] >> what kind of business is it

[1:41] >> this is a recording studio Yeah.

[1:43] >> Uh

[1:44] >> oh. Well, all right. That could be good.

[1:45] It could be a good business.

[1:46] >> Yeah. Well, you know, the these it could

[1:49] be and and we're all interested in

[1:50] getting into other things, too, and you

[1:52] know, getting away from those

[1:53] influences, but right now, I just I get

[1:56] this real heavy anxiety, you know, all

[1:59] the time. Just get caught in my head.

[2:01] >> Well, what what kind of thoughts come

[2:02] with it? I mean,

[2:03] >> well, it's always it's always just like

[2:05] a mental pingpong game, you know.

[2:06] >> Well, tell me about tell me about, you

[2:08] know, who's playing.

[2:09] >> Excuse me.

[2:10] >> Who's playing? Who are the players?

[2:11] What's What are the players doing?

[2:13] >> Well, it's um I don't

[2:16] >> you got to give me some details.

[2:18] >> Okay. Um just

[2:21] >> But see, if you're in the music

[2:22] business, let me just stop you from here

[2:24] before before we spout off in that

[2:26] direction. If you're in the music

[2:27] business,

[2:29] um then it must have some connection to

[2:32] your mother who put your the idea into

[2:34] your mind that you know to to excel in

[2:36] that.

[2:37] >> I've seen that. So therefore it won't be

[2:40] you that will be achieving this. The

[2:42] motiv is in your mind requires uh

[2:45] unhealthy motivation to achieve it.

[2:47] >> Mhm.

[2:48] >> So that even if you do achieve it, it

[2:50] won't be you that achieves it. It will

[2:51] be a mother achieving her her own will

[2:53] through you.

[2:53] >> Right. See

[2:54] >> is that you afraid of? Are you afraid of

[2:56] that?

[2:56] >> I've seen all that and you know I've

[2:58] really gotten away from music but I

[3:00] think I I at least at first got away

[3:03] from it in a real willful way. But now I

[3:06] understand. then you're not really away

[3:08] from it. You see, if you're just away

[3:09] from the music and you haven't really

[3:11] solved the problem, say, "Well, I'm not

[3:13] going to do what my mother says. I rebel

[3:15] against and I'm not interested in

[3:16] music." You give it up and you do

[3:18] something else.

[3:19] >> See, what it's always revolved around

[3:20] for me is, you know, I got caught in the

[3:23] in the church for a while and it's

[3:25] always been this right and wrong image.

[3:27] >> You you you don't know how to be be

[3:29] right without being rigid.

[3:30] >> Right. Exactly. That's it.

[3:33] >> I know.

[3:34] >> You see, in other words, you're building

[3:35] a right around a wrong. Exactly.

[3:37] >> And the wrong is hating your mother. And

[3:39] the and the wrong if hating your

[3:40] mother's created a guilt towards your

[3:42] mother and and the guilt makes you want

[3:43] to please her and to do what to to to

[3:46] allow her to will through you. You see,

[3:49] to to to make up for the guilt.

[3:51] >> Yeah. And I and I have a lot of trouble

[3:53] standing up to people and you know,

[3:55] >> for the same reason,

[3:56] >> being worried about it. And

[3:57] >> anytime you have a willful woman or

[3:59] willful person like your mother, you you

[4:01] react the same way. You end up being a

[4:03] people pleaser, letting them put their

[4:05] will into you for approval.

[4:07] >> Right. Just

[4:07] >> And the approval is only the motivation

[4:09] to to to to be a donkey for her purpose.

[4:13] >> Exactly.

[4:13] >> Is that right?

[4:14] >> Yeah. See, I I see all that just, you

[4:17] know, clear as day.

[4:18] >> And the religion was trying to get away

[4:19] from that because there's a certain

[4:20] amount of sin. There's there's a very

[4:22] sinister sin thing in all this mother

[4:24] motivated ambition, get to the top, you

[4:27] know, go going to hell in a hand basket,

[4:29] you know, disregarding conscience and

[4:31] all the rest of it. Yeah.

[4:32] >> And so therefore you went back to

[4:34] religion and religion was an attempt to

[4:35] cover up the the guilt of hating your

[4:37] mother and being ambitious and that

[4:39] whole Kashmir.

[4:40] >> Finally the pain just got so bad that I

[4:42] you know I drifted away from that.

[4:44] Finally

[4:45] >> Well, I'm right about that. Huh.

[4:46] >> Excuse me.

[4:47] >> I'm right about the church being just a

[4:48] cover. Yeah.

[4:49] >> Making you just rigid over over

[4:51] something negative.

[4:52] >> See, and and but now I seem to have that

[4:54] same, you know, I I see the same spirit

[4:58] still.

[4:59] >> Yes. But you still still resent your

[5:01] mother.

[5:03] That's the problem. And as long as you

[5:05] resent your mother, you're going to be

[5:06] locked into her. So that So now you you

[5:10] write back to music again because it's

[5:12] what you know best.

[5:14] >> It's what you've been trained to do,

[5:15] right? In the what all the while you

[5:17] were pleasing her,

[5:19] >> right?

[5:19] >> Right.

[5:20] >> Yeah.

[5:20] >> Because you you had to get back to music

[5:22] again. It was the only honest thing to

[5:23] do.

[5:25] >> Follow that. It was honest because when

[5:27] you got away from it, it was dishonest.

[5:30] It was that plastic church thing. Right.

[5:32] >> Right.

[5:33] >> So now you got right back to getting to

[5:35] the Now you're back to the fear of

[5:36] succeeding because if you if you

[5:38] succeed, if you if you if you succeed in

[5:41] this business, it will only be it will

[5:43] only be serving an an a um a will that

[5:46] is not your own. A purpose that is not a

[5:50] divine purpose, not a purpose that you

[5:52] were not created for.

[5:54] >> So I've really been getting away from it

[5:55] for the wrong

[5:56] >> Exactly. Ex Exactly. You see, but you're

[5:58] back to dealing with the problem. And

[6:00] that's the reason why you're afraid to

[6:01] be succeed because deep down inside, you

[6:03] know, success is failure.

[6:05] >> Yeah. And see what my brain

[6:07] >> hold it right there.

[6:08] >> Okay.

[6:08] >> Successes would be failure there,

[6:10] wouldn't it?

[6:10] >> Yes. Yeah. Because I'd be getting Yeah.

[6:13] I'd just be

[6:13] >> success would simply And that's why

[6:14] you're afraid of success,

[6:16] >> right?

[6:16] >> Because you know it means it means that

[6:18] you failed.

[6:20] >> Your mother has succeeded. I feel like

[6:22] everything I try to, you know, I try to

[6:25] think about doing this business or that

[6:27] business or just going and working.

[6:28] >> But you can't get away from this

[6:29] business. You got to deal with your you

[6:31] still got to deal with your mother in

[6:32] this business. For instance, maybe you

[6:34] are maybe you're destined to be in this

[6:36] business. Maybe you're destined to be a

[6:38] great musician or violinist.

[6:39] >> See, I don't really care about that

[6:41] though.

[6:41] >> Ah, but I know. But in other words, but

[6:43] as long as you resent your mother,

[6:45] you're locked into her will and you

[6:47] cannot do what you were created. And try

[6:49] to understand the rule of thumb here

[6:51] that you were created to serve a purpose

[6:54] and you were created by a creator and

[6:57] his will should be your will. Isn't that

[6:58] the uh prayer of of Christ?

[7:00] >> Yes.

[7:01] >> My will, thy will be done, not my will.

[7:04] But there's a will of the world too. And

[7:06] guess where that will of the world

[7:07] operates? It operates through women,

[7:10] right?

[7:11] >> And men call on that will to service

[7:13] that whatever they think is their will.

[7:14] Of course, it it would never men's will

[7:17] is not their own will. It's always the

[7:18] will of their mothers through the

[7:19] failing of all fathers ever since the

[7:21] beginning of time. Right?

[7:22] >> Yep.

[7:23] >> You see that, don't you?

[7:24] >> I see it.

[7:24] >> Your father needed his ego stroked and

[7:26] his ambitions stroked and he needed the

[7:29] will of your mother to support whatever

[7:30] he thought was his will. Never was. It

[7:33] was always her will in him crying out

[7:35] back to her

[7:36] >> to support him. Right.

[7:37] >> I've seen it.

[7:37] >> She's done the same thing to you. And

[7:39] you're afraid of You'll probably be

[7:41] afraid of getting married for the same

[7:42] reason.

[7:43] >> Yeah.

[7:43] >> You afraid you're afraid of being

[7:44] married?

[7:45] >> I did the same thing with girls. I just

[7:47] stopped dating for six years.

[7:48] >> I know. Cuz you'll begin to afraid of

[7:50] women. [snorts]

[7:50] >> That's it.

[7:51] >> Because because the woman would just

[7:53] simply replace your mother in this in

[7:54] the scene.

[7:55] >> Yeah. I was afraid of being dominated.

[7:57] >> Ah yes. See now but now let's come back

[8:01] to the point that I'm trying to make.

[8:02] >> Okay.

[8:03] >> Having settled all the little sideshows.

[8:06] Um there's only two wills. There's this

[8:08] inner will that you were created to

[8:10] serve and you'll never be happy until

[8:13] you respond accordingly. Right.

[8:14] >> Right. And everything else is failure.

[8:16] And something inside you gives you to

[8:18] know that. Right.

[8:19] >> Right.

[8:20] >> Okay. I hate to use those words, right?

[8:21] But it's just, you know, I mean, it

[8:23] sounds like you're following along like

[8:25] a robot.

[8:25] >> Yeah. Well, I track.

[8:26] >> You're tracking with me. All right.

[8:29] >> Now, there's this other will that's on

[8:31] earth as it is in hell. And this is what

[8:34] you are. This is what you're into. And

[8:36] you're born subject to it. And you're

[8:38] struggling to be free from it. Now,

[8:39] you're afraid of success because that

[8:41] success would be spill the death of you.

[8:43] Right.

[8:44] >> Right.

[8:45] So,

[8:45] >> see that's what happens with and I

[8:48] wanted to ask you also about in the

[8:50] meditation I've been having some you

[8:52] know I don't know if it's exorcism or

[8:54] what but it is pretty violent.

[8:56] >> Well, you you got a lot of rage coming

[8:58] to the surface.

[8:59] >> Yeah, it's coming up.

[9:00] >> I know. Well, we won't talk about that

[9:01] now because that will scare my new

[9:03] listeners away.

[9:03] >> All right. Never seen it.

[9:05] >> Yeah. Well, it's coming. This is general

[9:06] rage that you feel.

[9:08] >> Yeah. But my whole general attitude is

[9:10] always negative and I know that that

[9:12] comes from the same thing. Yes. Would

[9:14] you still resent your mother?

[9:16] >> Okay.

[9:16] >> And you you need your mother, but you

[9:18] you need women, but you resent them,

[9:20] >> right?

[9:20] >> And and and and your need actually to

[9:24] resent.

[9:25] >> See, it draws you back to women because

[9:28] you're you're lost as as a as a person

[9:30] cut a drift from the their own ground of

[9:32] being. The only thing you're made of is

[9:34] woman. You're made of a woman. And don't

[9:38] you understand that you have to serve

[9:39] the woman in order in order to exist as

[9:41] a will what appears to be a will of your

[9:43] own which deep down inside beyond that

[9:45] you know isn't your own will. That's why

[9:46] you're afraid of success.

[9:47] >> Yeah, I see that. That

[9:49] >> see [laughter] that is

[9:50] >> exactly what it is. Cuz I feel like I'm

[9:51] not I'm not in control. I don't have

[9:53] >> Right. But you're made of women and your

[9:56] resentment towards your mother and your

[9:58] father has separated you from the ground

[10:00] of your being. So you could this as long

[10:02] as you harbor any hostility towards your

[10:04] mother and your father. See your your

[10:07] resentment towards your father separates

[10:08] you from your identity as a man and

[10:11] connects you with your resentment.

[10:12] Resentment does a double two things.

[10:15] With a female, it has a different effect

[10:17] as with the male. Resent your father and

[10:20] you you you reject your identity, your

[10:23] male identity. Resent your mother and

[10:25] she becomes your she becomes your

[10:27] identity. She becomes your life force.

[10:29] She becomes the ground of your being and

[10:31] you become made out of her and you have

[10:33] to do her will. You have to do what she

[10:35] wants in order to get any love.

[10:39] Approval and approval is the life is is

[10:41] like existing. You see what I mean? You

[10:43] have an ego and all all souls need

[10:46] approval, love in order for it to exist.

[10:48] Otherwise, you seem to die. Except you

[10:51] are made out of the wrong spirit. You're

[10:54] you're made out of the wrong side of the

[10:56] you're made out of that which is from

[10:57] the wrong side of the force. You see

[11:00] >> what I'm trying to tell you?

[11:02] >> Yeah. Because that's what it feels like

[11:04] dying.

[11:04] >> It feels like dying and yet you yearn

[11:06] for a woman. You probably have fantasies

[11:08] with women. You see, you still yearn for

[11:10] the ground of that being. But the

[11:13] resentment is what your resentment

[11:15] toward your mother and your father that

[11:19] is separating you. That emotional state

[11:21] separates you. It separates the

[11:23] consciousness, your own spirit of that

[11:26] could be joined to the spirit of good.

[11:28] It keeps it from good. See I

[11:31] >> look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look look

[11:32] look look look look look look look this

[11:33] one more one more thing

[11:35] >> resent not evil overcome it with good

[11:38] Christ said he said resist not evil but

[11:41] the correct word is resent not that's

[11:43] how you you must resist evil but you you

[11:46] so to resent it resent not that is the

[11:49] correct form of resistance got it

[11:52] >> got it

[11:52] >> you must resist it because if you don't

[11:54] resist it will overcome you there must

[11:56] be some form of resistance obviously you

[11:58] must resist evil but so If you don't

[12:00] resist evil, it it's it's something

[12:03] wrong with that statement, isn't there?

[12:05] >> Yeah,

[12:06] >> there would be something wrong with it

[12:07] because the Bible teaches you to resist

[12:09] it.

[12:10] It teaches it that but in Jesus says

[12:12] resist it not. Obviously, he doesn't

[12:14] mean that. He means resent it not. See,

[12:17] if you don't resent it,

[12:19] you resist it.

[12:21] >> That's how you resist it.

[12:22] >> I've always tried to resist it.

[12:23] >> Don't resist it in a wrong Don't resist

[12:25] it in a wrong way.

[12:26] >> Yeah. And no one has ever told you

[12:28] exactly that one word you needed to hear

[12:31] that that sickness is in your mother. It

[12:34] was creat your mother father married her

[12:37] your your father married your mother for

[12:39] the reinforcement for his ambitions. You

[12:42] see

[12:43] >> yeah I see that

[12:45] >> and a woman then a woman like that who

[12:46] is cultivated to serve a man's ambition

[12:49] her only purpose in life is to motivate

[12:52] men and to be worshiped for it.

[12:55] men. See, she you had to fail. You had

[12:58] to be converted to needing her services

[13:01] for her to give you what she was taught

[13:04] as love. Follow that.

[13:06] >> Yes.

[13:07] >> Support for men's ambition. You had to

[13:09] have ambition in order for you to need

[13:12] her. Period. Follow that.

[13:15] >> I I follow.

[13:15] >> So, she put that ambition in you. She

[13:18] pushed you and she pushed you away from

[13:20] serving the purpose for which you were

[13:21] made.

[13:22] >> See? Yeah. I understand. And and I've

[13:24] really And you resented it. But you

[13:26] resented it.

[13:28] >> Yeah.

[13:28] >> That's the key.

[13:29] >> But now, you know, and I hate I don't

[13:31] want to get a quick fix from you or

[13:32] anything, you know, but

[13:34] >> but I hear you're not listening to me.

[13:35] >> I Well, I do. I understand.

[13:36] >> No, I can hear you're not listening.

[13:38] >> But I've

[13:39] >> You're not really got your ear to the

[13:42] ground.

[13:43] You're not hearing what I'm saying to

[13:45] you. One thing. What is the one thing

[13:47] I've told you to do?

[13:48] >> And not resent anymore.

[13:50] >> Exactly.

[13:51] >> I I see that I

[13:52] >> do. The question is, do you resent your

[13:53] mother? Well, see, I thought I didn't.

[13:56] And now I see I must have still been

[13:58] resenting her or I wouldn't have been.

[14:00] >> You resent. You You resent You resent

[14:02] your condition. You resent your fear of

[14:04] success. You feel driven towards success

[14:07] and you resent this being driven. That's

[14:09] your That's resenting your mother in

[14:10] you.

[14:10] >> Right.

[14:11] >> Got it. Goodbye. Adds fuel to the fire

[14:13] right there.

[14:14] >> Okay.

[14:15] >> Okay. I hope you he understands that. Um

[14:19] hello. This is Roy Master. Oh, hello.

[14:21] This is Roy Master speaking. You're on

[14:22] the air. Hello. Hello. You're on the

[14:24] air.

[14:25] >> Hi. Um hello. Calling to ask you about

[14:29] homeschooling.

[14:30] >> Oh, I don't know much about it.

[14:32] >> Okay. Uh well, but you I've heard you

[14:34] talk um before and you've told a lady

[14:37] before that they shouldn't put in a

[14:39] child until 8. Um I feel that uh the

[14:43] most you want to keep away your children

[14:45] from the negative malevolent influences

[14:49] of public schools and private schools

[14:52] and you want to keep them under eight

[14:54] hours a day. You need you don't need

[14:55] them eight hours a day under somebody

[14:57] else's influence. You you don't want

[14:59] them developing your child's character

[15:01] for you.

[15:01] >> You see cuz I just experienced that. I

[15:03] I've kept my boy my boy out. He's 6

[15:06] years old and he said he wanted to go to

[15:09] school and probably because you know the

[15:11] neighbors kids are going to school and

[15:12] whatever, right?

[15:13] >> I took him in and he did not want to

[15:16] stay but I could see you know that it

[15:19] was um I mean the teacher was just

[15:21] running from one child to another and

[15:23] >> it was in a onetoone basis. Now, the way

[15:25] the school system is today and the kind

[15:27] of the caliber of teachers that I'm sure

[15:31] there's occasionally a nice one, but the

[15:33] caliber of teachers are so low in my

[15:36] opinion that um and that they remind me

[15:40] of old washer women, you know, yaking

[15:43] across their clothes lines

[15:44] >> in Brooklyn somewhere, you know, that's

[15:47] the caliber of that's what how I see the

[15:49] average teacher today. And the children

[15:52] see that. They see more than that. They

[15:53] see hell. They see monsters. And it

[15:57] scares the heaven out of them. And they

[15:59] want to get out classroom as fast as

[16:00] they can. Why do you think kids are

[16:02] scared going to school? Um, it's because

[16:06] they see this monster. They see monsters

[16:08] in in their teachers. They see hell.

[16:12] >> Well, he didn't want to stay. He just

[16:13] wanted to I just want to go home. And

[16:15] she told me, "Well, you're just going to

[16:17] have to leave him." And if he cries,

[16:19] >> no way, shape, or form. You don't want

[16:21] He wanted to go to school. Now you know

[16:24] he now you took him to school. He sees

[16:26] what's there.

[16:27] >> He sees why you don't want him to go to

[16:29] school.

[16:29] >> Yes.

[16:30] >> Take him the hell out of there.

[16:32] >> Yeah, I did. I just brought him home. I

[16:34] says, "No, I'm not going to leave him

[16:35] crying."

[16:35] >> I mean, I know the school teachers, the

[16:37] school system think I'm crazy for

[16:39] talking this way. They don't see their

[16:40] own sickness.

[16:41] >> Well, see, well,

[16:42] >> they don't see their own madness. They

[16:43] don't see it.

[16:44] >> That's what's happening with me is that

[16:45] I work at a school, but still, you know,

[16:48] um I can they they think I'm silly.

[16:50] They've never heard of people, you know,

[16:52] really.

[16:53] >> Tell you what, I tell you what, I I um

[16:56] maybe you should leave your name at the

[16:57] foundation and we should have a little

[17:01] mailing list of of names of people who

[17:03] who live in various areas of the country

[17:06] and um and get you people together so

[17:08] you could start your own little home

[17:10] school.

[17:10] >> I would love that. And and the only

[17:12] reason I put him in was because I I have

[17:14] to work, Roy. I have four children. I've

[17:17] been divorced. Well, you can you can do

[17:18] you can do homeschooling in the evening.

[17:20] >> Well,

[17:21] >> it's a wonderful way of being with your

[17:22] children.

[17:23] >> Yes. Yes. I was just very confused. I

[17:25] was my heart is pounding so fast. I just

[17:27] felt like God, I can't leave him here.

[17:29] And I just

[17:30] >> No, I tell you I tell you that the the

[17:32] system is disgraceful.

[17:35] >> I guess I didn't realize it's like

[17:36] Russia in there.

[17:37] >> That's not what the educational system.

[17:40] This is not education. That learning

[17:41] isn't pleasant. I sent my Joshua goes to

[17:45] school, but it's it's my own school. So,

[17:48] and Jessica goes to school and it's, you

[17:50] know, it's not much of a school, but

[17:52] it's a beginning. And he he loves to go

[17:54] to school. We don't push we don't

[17:56] pressure him,

[17:57] >> you know. And it seemed very boring,

[17:58] too. It just seemed like she gave him a

[18:00] lot of papers and had to do a lot of

[18:02] repeatings of one letter.

[18:03] >> Yeah. And he started pressuring him into

[18:05] doing that junk. He's finished.

[18:06] >> Yeah. And then after he was finished and

[18:09] he like he seemed like he was bored. And

[18:11] then she went from one. though he should

[18:12] be. If he's normal, he would be bored.

[18:14] Now, what else is new? [laughter]

[18:16] It's it, you know, they think the kids

[18:19] have got the problem. It's the teachers

[18:20] that this is schools that's the problem.

[18:22] They just don't know how to educate.

[18:23] >> Yeah.

[18:24] >> They know how to brainwash, confuse,

[18:26] bamboozle,

[18:28] but they do not know how to educate. No

[18:30] way, Jose.

[18:32] >> Okay.

[18:33] >> Okay. Thank you.

[18:35] >> And she says, "Okay. No way, Jose."

[18:38] Okay. We'll take another call. But

[18:40] meanwhile, may I suggest three cassettes

[18:43] and a book to teach you to meditate

[18:47] so you can learn to deal with the horror

[18:49] that is this life. Listen, we got the

[18:52] best country in the world.

[18:55] And yet

[18:57] we're sort of we're little islands of

[19:00] sanity in it. What's left of of what

[19:02] democracy is all about. What we have is

[19:05] a bunch of plastic robots out there

[19:09] who get married and divorced and become

[19:11] parents and confound their kids.

[19:14] Ambitious little rodents, you know,

[19:17] nibbling their way to to the top.

[19:20] I I'm I'm very very sort of disgusted

[19:23] when I see the world around me. I'm not

[19:25] angry. I'm not contemptuous. I just see

[19:28] what I know you see

[19:30] that that that people aren't in

[19:32] business. They're not in the educational

[19:34] system. They're not doctors or

[19:36] psychiatrists because they really care

[19:39] for human beings,

[19:42] but they're really in it for some little

[19:45] selfish little gratification. But they

[19:47] pretend, oh, how do you do, Mrs. Jones?

[19:49] And how do you do, Mrs. Smith? It looks

[19:51] so sympathetic. And when the preacher

[19:53] greets you at the the the church door,

[19:55] it's the same thing. They just

[19:58] just playing. They're playing little

[20:00] games. Just playing little games.

[20:02] there's something in them that's sort of

[20:04] a waiting vulture and the educational

[20:07] system is not in business for your child

[20:10] in my opinion. Very few teachers love

[20:13] what they're doing. They love feeling

[20:15] important. I remember my teachers I I

[20:18] don't remember my teachers loving what

[20:19] they're doing. And I remember how they

[20:21] love feeling important and confusing me

[20:23] with how clever they were and how stupid

[20:26] I was for not understanding them and

[20:30] sort of pressuring me rather than

[20:31] coaxing me and making it the work

[20:33] interesting. Sort of luring me on

[20:38] through being interesting and patient.

[20:40] It's not the way it is. We have a lot of

[20:42] mad devils out there that have no

[20:45] tolerance for the natural growth of your

[20:47] child. But we have a lot of mad devils

[20:49] out there that want to put their will

[20:50] into your child and make your child a

[20:52] slave of this world. You know, slave for

[20:54] the factories and a slave for the mills

[20:56] and slave for the taxes and

[21:01] and if you conform and if you get

[21:03] through this this dung heap,

[21:07] um if you survive, you're just you don't

[21:10] have any character left at the end.

[21:13] And this characterless creature gets

[21:15] married to some other characterless

[21:17] creature that make then they the two

[21:19] characterless creatures make each other

[21:20] feel comfortable.

[21:22] And the little children are born this

[21:25] ambitious characterless creature or this

[21:28] the total failure the rebel snorting

[21:30] coke and cocaine and stealing and

[21:32] robbing.

[21:35] The two there's two characterless

[21:37] creatures. One that's conformed and

[21:39] become

[21:41] an educated person but with no soul. One

[21:44] who's rebelled and hasn't learned

[21:46] anything. No soul. But some of you still

[21:49] have, you know, some of you still alive

[21:51] in there. And you can hear what I'm

[21:53] saying.

[21:54] And some of you, you know, you know,

[21:55] you've been destroyed by school. Even if

[21:58] you're educated, you're not happy with

[22:00] your lot. And and you remember you

[22:02] couldn't learn in school. and you felt

[22:04] like you were stupid and maybe you

[22:06] didn't learn and you thought you was,

[22:09] you know, you were inferior, but you're

[22:10] not until YouTube types of people are

[22:13] making this appeal. Get the cassettes

[22:16] and the book and we'll strike the

[22:18] balance. We'll show you what education

[22:20] is really like. It'll take you 10 or 12

[22:23] years to recover from what was done to

[22:25] you, but you will recover and you can

[22:27] start now.

[22:30] You will start right away. There will be

[22:31] hope for you. And there's even hope for

[22:32] you listening to my program, right? You

[22:34] know I'm telling you the truth.

[22:37] What you got to get rid of is the

[22:38] resentment towards authority. That's

[22:41] what keeps authority alive in you. The

[22:43] effect that they have on you that keeps

[22:46] striving to be an apple polisher or to

[22:48] keep rebelling and not being able to

[22:50] learn. That resentment is the is the is

[22:52] the is the essence that keeps your

[22:57] problems alive.

[23:00] It's the energy. It's the battery. It's

[23:02] the fuel for all your character

[23:05] aberrations and your guilts and fears

[23:07] and disappointments and anxieties and

[23:09] drinking and smoking. All right. Um,

[23:14] we'll take our call. Hello, this is Roy

[23:16] Master speaking. You're in the air.

[23:18] Hello.

[23:19] >> Some call about mother's influence of

[23:21] food on

[23:21] >> Oh yes. Okay. We got five minutes.

[23:23] >> Yes. Um, I've come to realize the effect

[23:26] that the food has had and that all these

[23:28] years my mom was going through the food

[23:31] into me just like she did with my dad.

[23:32] >> Right. Right. Right.

[23:33] >> And now that I've come to realize that,

[23:35] my question is, can I still eat? I live

[23:37] at home and I'm I'm

[23:38] >> Can you eat without being influenced?

[23:40] You see how many people have problems

[23:42] you'll find people in hospital who have

[23:44] to be force-fed because when they eat

[23:45] they feel guilty there and the guilt

[23:47] makes them sick and the conflict is so

[23:49] great that they start to die because

[23:51] they they associate food with guilt. And

[23:53] if they eat, they feel guilty. And the

[23:55] only way they could not feel guilty in

[23:57] their mind is not to eat and they die

[23:58] and they have to be put in hospital and

[24:00] be fed introvenously. And that's, you

[24:02] know, it's it's a very common problem.

[24:04] >> Mhm. I just don't want that. I realize,

[24:07] you know, everything that food is made,

[24:08] it's all my mom slices up. You give her

[24:10] a give me an apple, it's sliced or she

[24:12] take an egg and she'll throw it.

[24:14] >> She she she has to she has to put

[24:15] something of herself into it. She can't

[24:17] let you take a an apple off a tree

[24:19] because she wouldn't be in it

[24:21] >> and she wouldn't be into you.

[24:22] >> Deleting that food or am I fooling

[24:23] myself to think, "Oh, I realize it and I

[24:25] can still

[24:25] >> No. No. Do you have you heard the theme

[24:27] of this program today? Have you been

[24:29] listening?"

[24:30] >> Yeah. To most of the program.

[24:31] >> And And have you heard the theme of the

[24:33] program?

[24:34] >> Yes. Resist, not resent.

[24:35] >> That's right. Resist without resentment.

[24:38] Resent not evil. And that way you can

[24:40] resist it.

[24:42] So if you resist it in a wrong way, it

[24:45] ends up getting inside you. And you'll

[24:47] see that your relationship with your

[24:49] mother is one of resentment. Correct.

[24:50] >> Mhm.

[24:51] >> And even though you're eating something

[24:52] now, you're eating a little piece of

[24:54] your mother. If she she's still around,

[24:55] obviously you you're implying that she

[24:57] is.

[24:58] >> Yes.

[24:58] >> Are you living at home?

[24:59] >> Yeah. I'm trying to get out.

[25:00] >> How old are you?

[25:01] >> 25.

[25:02] >> Yes. And you if you're not careful

[25:03] though, uh even though your mother's not

[25:05] around, your mother's inside you.

[25:07] >> Mhm. And uh you you'll you'll probably

[25:10] tease yourself to eat. In other words,

[25:12] you can't get away from the influence of

[25:14] your mother.

[25:14] >> Well, when I cook, you know, I was

[25:16] living on my own for a while. I try to

[25:17] make simple food and and that influence.

[25:19] But

[25:20] >> But did you?

[25:21] >> Yes, I thought I did. Yes.

[25:22] >> I'm back here, I guess. You know,

[25:25] >> well, you know, there was can you eat

[25:26] your mother eat mother's food with a

[25:28] good conscience without eating your

[25:30] mother's poison? Meaning without being

[25:33] influenced by your mother's will. That's

[25:35] where the problem you have. You know

[25:37] many times she slices an apple and cors

[25:39] an apple and puts raisins in it and puts

[25:40] cinnamon in it and cooks it in an oven

[25:42] and and and ruins the apple, you know

[25:45] what I mean? And gives you a baked apple

[25:46] instead of an apple from a tree.

[25:48] >> Yeah.

[25:48] >> Puts something of herself in it. You

[25:50] feel every time you eat that or you're

[25:51] obligated to eat it, you seem to be, you

[25:54] know, more suggestible to her will,

[25:56] right?

[25:56] >> Mhm.

[25:57] >> Yes. The only reason for that is is

[25:59] because you you as a child, you've

[26:01] always known that, but you resisted your

[26:04] perception has caused you to resent it.

[26:06] And that's what's made it work.

[26:09] That's what's made her will work inside

[26:10] you and caused this conflict.

[26:13] >> Just uh when you're home with your

[26:15] mother, say, "Mother, you don't really

[26:16] need to spend all your time cooking."

[26:18] >> Yeah. You tell her that now. You know,

[26:19] she, "Oh, let me fix you something to

[26:20] eat."

[26:20] >> I know. It's it's her nature. She's your

[26:22] father's conditioned her to that.

[26:24] >> Uhhuh. I did that to my wife and it's

[26:27] taken me a long time to teach her not to

[26:29] do it.

[26:29] >> And as a as a as an adult, you're going

[26:31] to have to teach this woman, your

[26:32] mother, you're going to lead her by the

[26:34] hand in the right direction.

[26:36] >> And the main thing is don't resent her

[26:38] for doing that. And um and and what she

[26:42] prepares, if she insists on doing it,

[26:43] don't physically stop her.

[26:45] >> Mhm.

[26:45] >> And just don't resent her for doing it.

[26:47] And that's all there is to it. either

[26:50] she'll see what she's doing wrong may

[26:52] take a long time

[26:54] um and she'll see what you do she's

[26:56] doing wrong only if you face her with it

[26:58] by not by not reacting to it. I'm

[27:01] looking at the clock and I want to say

[27:03] some more things to make a more complete

[27:05] idea but I haven't got the time.

[27:06] >> Okay.

[27:07] >> All right.

[27:07] >> Thanks a lot. Right.

[27:08] >> You're welcome.

[27:08] >> Bye.

[27:10] >> Um wish I had more time to when you're

[27:13] looking at the clock you have a

[27:15] deadline. and it's difficult to complete

[27:16] an idea. But uh you'll join me in my

[27:18] next program I hope with your various uh

[27:22] questions and remember the remember the

[27:25] the thought I want to leave you with is

[27:26] watch for resentment. That's the

[27:28] hypnotic emotion and it reinforces

[27:30] everything that's wrong with you and you

[27:32] can never draw a same breath as long as

[27:34] you're resentful towards anything.

[27:36] And people who want to control you, they

[27:38] know that.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

In this Adviceline call, Roy Masters argues that fear of success can appear when an achievement serves someone else's will, such as a parent's, rather than your own. The idea is that succeeding at a goal you didn't choose can feel like losing yourself. It is a hypothesis to test against your own history, not a settled explanation.
Masters makes this claim directly, saying that as long as a person resents a parent, they remain 'locked into her will.' He also says that rebelling by quitting a path is not the same as resolving the tie, since you stay organized around the parent. Whether this fits your situation depends on details a radio call cannot establish.
It is Masters' phrase for a rigid moral or religious stance that covers up an unexamined feeling. In the call, he says the caller's church involvement was an attempt to cover the guilt of resenting his mother. The concept describes how being 'good' can become a defense against feelings a person hasn't faced.
Masters argues that resentment produces guilt, and guilt produces a need to please, which he links to people-pleasing. This is a plausible chain that many therapeutic traditions explore, but the call presents it with more certainty than the evidence in a 28-minute excerpt can support. Treat it as a question to examine, not a verdict.
The claims that the 'will of the world operates through women' and that men's will is really their mothers' will are broad generalizations. Masters offers no evidence for them in this excerpt, and they go far beyond the caller's own story. Listeners should evaluate them skeptically and not accept them as established fact.
According to the host's own opening, the program addresses 'whatever's wrong with you in your family life,' through live calls in which he speaks with callers facing similar problems. The format is rapid, confrontational questioning, and the host warns that it can be disturbing. This excerpt is Program 4349, published by Perilous World Radio in December 2025.
Constant, heavy anxiety that interferes with sleep, work, or relationships is worth raising with a licensed mental health professional or physician. The caller in this call described his anxiety as a 'mental pingpong game,' and the host asked who the players were, a useful self-inquiry question. Professional assessment can help determine what is actually happening.
