Partner Fertility Yoga for IVF: Stretch and Massage Guide

A recorded Zoom session from yoga teacher Julie Ela Grace, sponsored by The Fertility Partnership and aimed at people going through IVF, asks two people to do something most yoga videos never ask: stretch and massage each other. Running a little over an hour, the practice moves from a breath-led centering into individual warm-ups, seated partner stretches, back-to-back and interlocked positions, and a slow facial massage at the close. The poses are accessible and the video says it is suitable for both men and women. The more interesting thing is what the poses demand. Every stage asks the same question in different forms: what does your body need right now, what does your partner's body need, and how do you say so out loud when something has gone far enough?

Why does a fertility yoga session need a partner?

Grace opens by explaining that this session is different from her usual format, and that a number of viewers had asked for it. Her framing is careful about who the partner is. "That doesn't have to be a romantic partner," she tells the room. "If that person doesn't feel like doing this you can grab a friend or anyone else that would like to do it with you." That flexibility matters for a practice tied to fertility treatment, where the person beside you may be a spouse, a partner, a sibling, or a friend who has agreed to show up.

She also states the safety principle that anchors the whole recording: listen to your body, and communicate. In a partner practice, that second part carries real weight. "If your partner is helping you to stretch and it feels like enough, you can say, okay, that's enough," Grace says near the start of the session. "Or if you want more, you can tell them that as well." The request for an explicit yes-or-enough from both people is the design principle of the entire hour. A stretch is not finished when one person decides it is. It is finished when the person being stretched says so.

How does the breathing set up the practice?

Before anyone moves, Grace takes about six minutes to bring attention into the body, and the method is more specific than generic relaxation. She begins with shoulder rolls, inhaling as the shoulders lift and exhaling as they drop and roll back, then asks people to let the hands rest face up or down. Then comes a series of audible sighing exhales, meant to release what the breath is carrying.

The most useful instruction in this stretch is about judgment. "See if you can avoid judging it," she says, asking listeners to notice whatever arises in body and mind and "avoid labeling anything as good or bad." This is not a small request for someone in the middle of IVF, where the body is often the subject of intense scrutiny and where the mind can circle through the same worries. Grace's suggestion is not to fix those thoughts but to watch them. "Zoom out of your experience and just witness it," she says, "as if you're witnessing it from above."

From there she builds a three-part breath: inhale through the nose so the belly rises, then the ribs, then the chest; exhale so the chest, ribs, and belly release in reverse. She notes that yoga students familiar with ujjayi, or ocean-wave breath, may use it, but that it is not required. The point is steady, full breathing, and roughly five more rounds before any movement begins. The breath is the scaffolding for everything that follows, and it is the first place the video asks participants to be honest about their state.

What do the seated warm-ups and partner stretches involve?

Once the breath has settled, the practice shifts to individual warm-ups done seated, with the cues linked tightly to inhale and exhale. Arms lift on the inhale and drop on the exhale. Hands interlace and turn palms up for a long stretch skyward, then the body reaches to one side and then the other, one arm arcing across the torso. Grace repeatedly warns against twisting: when you reach down toward a hand or forearm, she says, "try to avoid twisting down." Seated cat-cow follows, and then a set of neck half-circles that stay in front of the chest. "Just saying hey to your neck," she says.

The partner portion begins with spacing. Partners sit with a stagger, one slightly forward and one slightly back, or face each other at a distance that keeps them from colliding. Grace then introduces the two-person stretches in order, starting with sitting back to back. Later come interlocked elbows and positions in which partners hinge forward from the hips and hold each other's hands or arms for leverage. Where a position involves standing or squatting, the instructions emphasize weight placement and stability before depth. The transcript of this section is partly garbled, so the sequence is best understood in outline: the individual warm-up primes the body, the partner positions add a guided pull or lean, and the cues keep returning to communication. Each new shape is introduced with a check on how the pair is doing before the stretch deepens.

"Communicate your needs. If something feels like enough, you can say okay, that's enough." (Julie Ela Grace, opening instructions, recorded session)

What makes this structure work is that the partner is not a passive recipient. Grace frames the other person as a second set of eyes and ears: someone who helps find the edge of a stretch, and who stops when asked. That reciprocity is the difference between a partner stretch and a stretch performed on someone.

Why does the massage close the session?

The last section turns from big-muscle stretching to a slow face and head massage. The instructions are concrete: thumbs placed near the brow, a gentle pull along the eyebrow, light pressure at the corners of the mouth, and a sweep from the mouth toward the lower jaw and chin. The pressure is described as very light throughout. In the closing minutes Grace asks participants to rest their hands and let the massage settle, then offers a warm farewell.

The placement is deliberate. The session opens by softening the face, the brow, and the jaw, so the massage completes a loop. A practice that began with the mind noticing its own tension ends with the hands doing something gentle for that same face. For a couple undergoing IVF, that can be the most grounding part of the hour: a stretch of time when touch is the point, not a means to an outcome.

What should you know before trying it?

The video's own disclaimer is worth taking seriously. The information is for educational purposes only and is not a medical diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice. The exercises are intended for people who want to improve their health and wellness, and anyone who attempts them does so at their own risk. Soreness after unfamiliar movement is described as normal. But the stop rule is firm: "If you have pain and your pain increases, moves to a different location or new or different symptoms arise after doing an exercise, you should stop the exercise and seek advice from a physician or physical therapist." The disclaimer also makes no promise that the practice will improve any medical condition or function.

That last point matters for this specific audience. Nothing in the video claims that partner yoga will change fertility outcomes, and it should not be read that way. What it offers is a structured, low-pressure way to spend time together during treatment, with breath and touch as the medium and communication as the rule. Practical preparation helps: use props such as blocks, cushions, and bolsters, and if you are doing the session after work, Grace suggests that lying down can give the lower back and hips a break.

Where to go from here

Start with the full recording, and resist the urge to skip to the partner section. The first twenty minutes, with their breath and attention work, are what make the partner positions feel like care rather than performance. Clear a space at home, find a partner, and agree on the rule Grace returns to again and again before you begin: say when it is enough. Do the centering even if you skip the stretches. If you want more of Grace's teaching, the video notes that she offers free meditations through the Insight Timer app. And if you are in treatment, keep your medical team in the loop about any new movement practice, especially if pain appears or shifts.

The lasting idea in this session is simple and easy to lose in a busy day: two people can sit close, breathe together, and give each other something specific, without either one having to be the fixer.

[0:06] right okay um welcome back to another

[0:10] session of the relaxing fertility yoga

[0:13] sponsored by the fertility

[0:15] partnership um as you probably know if

[0:18] you're here my name is Julie and so this

[0:22] session today is a little bit different

[0:24] a few of you uh were asking for this

[0:26] before and so we are going to do it

[0:29] today so for this session you need a

[0:32] partner and that doesn't have to be a

[0:35] romantic partner if that person doesn't

[0:38] feel like doing this you can grab a

[0:40] friend or anyone else that would like to

[0:41] do it with you um as always these

[0:45] sessions are safe for anyone currently

[0:48] undergoing IVF um or any of the uh

[0:53] fertility treatment

[0:54] processes and um also as always I just

[0:57] really want to encourage you to listen

[1:00] to your body but also because we're

[1:02] doing a partner stretching practice um

[1:06] also communicate your needs so if

[1:10] something feels like enough if if your

[1:13] partner is helping you to stretch and it

[1:15] feels like enough you can you can say

[1:18] okay that's enough um or if you want

[1:20] more you can you can tell them that as

[1:22] well so it's it's really all about

[1:24] listening both to yourself and uh to to

[1:28] your partner so my partner is is here

[1:31] this is Antonio and he is he is helping

[1:35] uh for this class today so we're going

[1:39] to start as we usually do with a

[1:41] centering and breathing exercise and

[1:44] then we're going to move into some

[1:46] individual warm-ups and then from there

[1:48] we are going to find different ways of

[1:51] playing with stretches with our partner

[1:54] or friend whoever it is that is here

[1:56] with you today um so yeah so let's begin

[2:01] um same as always to begin you can

[2:04] either start by sitting up nice and Tall

[2:06] or you can lie down um since many of you

[2:10] will be doing this after work you might

[2:12] want to lie down and just give your

[2:14] lower back and your hips a little bit of

[2:16] a break so find what feels right to

[2:22] you and if you're sitting try to sit up

[2:24] nice and tall and also feel free to use

[2:27] any props blocks cushions bolsters any

[2:30] anything else that you might

[2:34] need and then once you find your

[2:37] centering position again either seated

[2:40] or lying down just close your

[2:44] eyes and take a few rolls of the

[2:46] shoulders so you're going to inhale and

[2:48] roll the shoulders

[2:50] up and exhale them down and

[2:54] back and again

[3:04] one

[3:14] more and just relax the shoulders

[3:17] [Music]

[3:18] down and relax your hands either facing

[3:22] up or

[3:25] down and with your eyes

[3:28] closed take a few deep inhales through

[3:31] the nose with exhales sighing or blowing

[3:35] the air out of the

[3:47] mouth just do this a few

[3:51] times inhaling

[3:54] calm exhaling sighing out letting go

[4:24] and then once you've sighed out a few

[4:29] times just return to the Natural rhythm

[4:32] of your

[4:39] [Music]

[4:41] breath start to notice your

[4:47] breath notice where it falls in your

[4:50] body

[5:02] notice what your breath can tell you

[5:04] about this

[5:15] moment and whatever you find in your

[5:18] body in your mind in your practice

[5:22] today see if you can avoid judging it so

[5:26] see if you can avoid labeling anything

[5:28] as good or bad

[5:30] just allow it all to be what it

[5:47] is and take the awareness to your

[5:54] face and start to soften the face

[5:58] starting with the brow relaxing the

[6:03] brow taking that same awareness down

[6:07] over the corners of the eyes and the

[6:09] corners of the

[6:13] mouth loosen the jaw

[6:38] and just check

[6:41] in starting with your body and notice

[6:45] anywhere else where you might be holding

[6:49] tension or

[6:51] strain and see if you can just start to

[6:54] let some of that go simply through this

[6:57] noticing so that could be you're holding

[7:00] some tension in the hands or in the toes

[7:02] or your shoulders are

[7:06] up just relax whatever you can

[7:32] then likewise check in with your

[7:37] mind just notice if there is

[7:41] tension in your mind right now if there

[7:44] are certain thoughts on

[7:47] repeat and I just want you to observe

[7:50] what's happening in your mind right now

[7:52] and again try not to judge it so just

[7:56] observe what's

[7:58] happening so as if you could zoom out

[8:02] zoom out of your experience and just

[8:06] witness it as if you're witnessing it

[8:08] from above

[8:48] and then take your awareness and bring

[8:51] it back to your

[8:57] breath and start to deep in the breath

[9:01] through the

[9:05] nose inhale through the nose and take

[9:09] the breath down into the belly so that

[9:12] the belly Rises with the

[9:15] inhale and then exhale out the nose and

[9:19] feel the belly roll back towards the

[9:24] spine so we inhale belly

[9:28] Rises exhale belly

[9:43] Falls and then deepen the breath further

[9:47] inhale through the nose fill up belly

[9:51] ribs

[9:53] chest expanding all the way up through

[9:56] the

[9:58] inhale exhale the nose chest ribs and

[10:03] belly

[10:13] contract those of you familiar with

[10:16] pranam with yogic

[10:18] breathing you could come into an uay or

[10:21] an ocean wave sounding

[10:23] breath but if you're not familiar don't

[10:26] worry just stick with this deep

[10:28] breathing that we're doing here right

[10:31] now so again we inhale and expand belly

[10:35] ribs

[10:37] chest and exhale contract chest ribs and

[10:42] belly

[11:09] and I want you to take about five more

[11:12] rounds of deep breath

[11:28] here e

[12:04] and then from

[12:05] here start to

[12:08] mentally ready yourself for

[12:13] movement just in your own time and in

[12:16] your own way start to draw some movement

[12:19] back into your

[12:21] body just letting yourself stretch yawn

[12:27] side just do whatever feels good to

[12:47] you and then I'd like you to make your

[12:51] way to a seated

[12:54] position and you'll need a little bit of

[12:57] space so that might mean that you

[12:59] stagger one of you sits a little forward

[13:01] one of you sits a little back it might

[13:02] mean that you could face each other but

[13:04] have a little bit of distance so that

[13:07] you're not running into each other okay

[13:10] so um so we're just going to again start

[13:13] with some individual stretches so we're

[13:15] going to inhale lift the arms

[13:18] up oh and exhale just release them

[13:21] down start by merging the breath and the

[13:24] movement so again we inhale

[13:28] lift and exhale

[13:32] down and one more inhale

[13:37] lift and then this time when you get up

[13:39] to the top I want you to interlace your

[13:41] fingers and then turn your palms up to

[13:43] the sky and take a big stretch

[13:46] Skyward trying to feel that opening

[13:49] through the

[13:57] shoulders and then turn the knuckles

[14:00] back up and we're going to release the

[14:04] left hand down to the floor and then

[14:06] take the right arm across so you feel

[14:08] this opening this lateral opening

[14:11] through the side of your

[14:13] body and then inhale back up through

[14:16] Center and exhale over to the other

[14:22] side and take a few of these back and

[14:26] forth now so we just inhale up up exhale

[14:31] across go at your own

[14:39] pace all

[14:52] right all right when next you come to

[14:56] the

[14:57] left you can either take the hand down

[15:00] or if it's available to you you can take

[15:01] the forearm down however try to avoid

[15:04] twisting down if you do take that

[15:06] forearm down okay and then I want you to

[15:10] really reach across here and then you

[15:12] can even start to turn to look out

[15:15] towards that left side and just take

[15:18] that very slight turn to look either

[15:21] down towards your hand or out towards uh

[15:23] the side of the room and then that top

[15:26] arm the Palm is going to face down a

[15:28] little bit as you do that and maybe you

[15:30] then feel a deeper stretch through the

[15:32] side of your

[15:35] body and then inhale nice Strong Lift Up

[15:39] through Center and we do the same to the

[15:41] other side so we start either coming

[15:44] down onto the hand or the

[15:46] forearm and we start to either look to

[15:48] the floor or to the opposite wall and

[15:50] then we really reach that left arm

[15:52] across feeling that additional stretch

[15:55] through the side of the body

[16:07] okay and then we're going to inhale lift

[16:10] all the way back up through

[16:12] Center and just release the hands down

[16:15] onto your knees and we are going to take

[16:18] a few seated cat cows here so we're

[16:21] going to inhale send the heart forward

[16:23] roll the shoulders

[16:25] back and then exhale tuck the chin in

[16:27] towards your chest and round that

[16:31] and again inhale take the heart

[16:35] forward and exhale

[16:38] round just a few more finishing our

[16:55] warm-ups last one

[17:03] and then come all the way back up to

[17:05] seated and then from here tuck the chin

[17:08] in towards your chest and I just want

[17:10] you to very gently roll one ear so say

[17:14] your right ear towards your right

[17:15] shoulder but then roll back through

[17:17] Center chin to the chest and then over

[17:20] to the other side left ear towards the

[17:22] left shoulder and we're just going to do

[17:24] a few of these half circles here going

[17:26] towards the chest not dropping the head

[17:29] back to the

[17:32] spine just take them at your own

[17:35] pace just saying Hey to your

[17:48] neck one

[17:55] more okay

[17:59] and then come through

[18:02] center now we are going

[18:05] to sit back to back now so just go ahead

[18:11] and bring yourself into a position where

[18:15] your back and your partner's back are

[18:17] against each

[18:20] other and just starting here we're going

[18:23] to play a little game and uh if you can

[18:27] have your legs crossed but uh is this

[18:29] uncomfortable for you to have your like

[18:32] okay okay so um so we're going to sit

[18:37] back to back and in a moment one of you

[18:41] is going to start moving and the other

[18:45] of you is just going to be very loose

[18:47] and I don't want you to say anything

[18:49] about um who's doing what see if you can

[18:51] just feel who's leading and who's

[18:54] following and just know that this is

[18:57] just something to play with and

[18:59] often what ends up happening is both

[19:02] people think the other was leading it's

[19:04] not always the case but I just want you

[19:05] to play for a moment so close your eyes

[19:08] just

[19:11] relax and

[19:13] then you'll start to feel one of you

[19:17] move and the other's just going to

[19:19] follow a bit like they're dancing

[19:45] just have a play

[20:10] take a few more seconds

[20:22] here then bring yourselves back to

[20:27] Center and to take a moment to

[20:30] just very briefly chat between you about

[20:34] who is leading and who is

[20:36] following

[20:39] and again it's nothing to take too

[20:51] seriously all

[20:53] right and then from here now I'd like

[20:57] you to actually un wind your

[21:00] legs and you're going to take your legs

[21:03] out wide so just make a wide angle with

[21:07] your legs do you have enough room okay

[21:10] all right

[21:11] so okay so you might need to adjust

[21:14] yourselves or adjust where you are in

[21:16] your space depending um so just make

[21:19] those adjustments anytime that you that

[21:21] you need and then I want you to inhale

[21:24] and lift your arms up to the sky

[21:29] and then exhale each of you is going to

[21:31] hinge forward towards your right leg

[21:34] just very

[21:37] gently and then you're going to start to

[21:40] swing yourself through the center over

[21:44] to the left side and then I want you to

[21:48] try to lift your right arm up to the sky

[21:52] and then you're going to start to lie

[21:55] down on that partner behind you

[22:01] and let yourself make the adjustments

[22:03] that you need to make here so that

[22:06] you're

[22:17] comfortable all right now we're going to

[22:20] start to lift back

[22:25] up and going back the way that we can

[22:31] came and we inhale we lift the arms

[22:36] up we're going to bow down towards that

[22:39] left

[22:41] leg and we are going to swing low

[22:45] through Center over to the right you can

[22:47] take that right hand down and just

[22:49] adjust as you need so that you can lie

[22:53] down maybe

[22:55] onto your partner or maybe you get lied

[22:59] on or maybe you can both lie on each

[23:01] other it just depends on your space and

[23:03] how you

[23:22] moved okay and then start to lift

[23:27] yourself back up

[23:35] all the way back through centor all

[23:37] right and then release your arms

[23:41] down now from here we are going to play

[23:45] with coming up to standing and the key

[23:48] word there is play okay so what we're

[23:52] going to do is we're going to bend our

[23:53] knees placing the feet on the floor and

[23:55] then we're going to interlock elbows

[24:00] and then we need to communicate and we

[24:04] are going to push into each other so

[24:07] we're each pushing our weight against

[24:09] the other and we also push the feet on

[24:11] the floor and then on the count of three

[24:15] for us but then do whatever you need to

[24:17] do on your end we're going to push

[24:19] against each other and come up to

[24:20] standing so we go we push in we push

[24:23] against the floor with the feet and we

[24:25] go one two three and we start you lift

[24:31] up and you can bring yourself all the

[24:36] way up to standing and just uh I'm gonna

[24:40] give you a few seconds to play with it

[24:42] because you might be uh new to this and

[24:46] having a little bit of fun on your end

[24:49] with

[24:51] that so just take a few more a few more

[24:55] moments to play with this

[25:04] and if you you had it you can also play

[25:06] with going up and down if you were

[25:08] really good at it

[25:22] already then just make your way to

[25:25] standing when you're able to do do

[25:30] so so whether you you manage to bring

[25:32] yourselves up together or if you uh

[25:37] maybe didn't quite get that it's okay

[25:39] it's all

[25:41] okay and then we're going to face our

[25:46] partner and let's just start with a

[25:49] little shoulder stretch so what we're

[25:51] going to do is place our hand on our

[25:53] partner's

[25:54] shoulders

[25:55] okay and not on their hair

[25:59] okay and then just let yourself relax

[26:02] there now once your hands are on your

[26:05] partner's shoulders you're going to

[26:07] start to walk yourself back oh so that

[26:12] you can bring yourself

[26:15] into um this box well sort of rectangle

[26:19] shape with the floor

[26:21] together and you should be able to feel

[26:23] that stretch in the shoulders

[26:30] make any adjustments that you might need

[26:31] to make here and then again playing

[26:35] playing always the key word here now

[26:37] Antonio is not going to be able to play

[26:39] so much because he's goingon to hit a

[26:40] wall but uh we're going to shift our

[26:42] weight into our right feet so everyone

[26:45] go into your right foot and then you're

[26:47] going to start to slide and lift your

[26:50] left leg up to the sky behind you trying

[26:55] to make yourself parallel to the ground

[27:10] and gently take that left foot back

[27:13] down make any adjustments that you might

[27:16] need to

[27:18] make and then you're going to shift the

[27:20] weight into your left foot and pick your

[27:23] right leg up to the sky

[27:44] that right foot back down and then from

[27:47] here you can both start to walk towards

[27:49] each other lift yourself all the way

[27:52] back

[27:54] up all right and then take a moment just

[27:57] to shake out

[28:00] do whatever that you might need there

[28:03] all right now from here we are going to

[28:06] take hold of each other's right

[28:09] wrists okay and then we're going to sort

[28:13] to bend our knees with the toes squared

[28:17] forward okay so it's like you're sitting

[28:19] down into a chair so coming down into

[28:21] chair POS that's it and then I want you

[28:23] to pull against each other's wrists so

[28:26] that you can sit here so that you can

[28:29] really give each other your

[28:31] weight okay and then I want you to start

[28:34] to have a little

[28:35] play so again someone might be following

[28:40] someone might be

[28:41] leading and you might

[28:44] find that you can take some extra

[28:48] stretches

[28:49] into the legs and it's really about

[28:53] finding that

[28:56] balance with

[28:59] holding each other's weight up

[29:02] here again we're just having a

[29:13] play you can make it a bit Dancy if you

[29:23] want all right and then we're going to

[29:25] swap hand so bring it all the way back

[29:28] up and we take hold of each other's left

[29:31] hand in fact I'm going to TI the camera

[29:33] slightly

[29:35] down

[29:36] okay and then you find that position

[29:40] where your toes are squared forward to

[29:42] start and you can both sit back you're

[29:44] holding each other's weight

[29:46] up and then from there you can play a

[29:50] little

[29:51] bit you can each play you can even come

[29:54] down both into squats or one into a

[29:57] squat

[30:07] your

[30:13] arm play with the position of your

[30:22] legs finding your own Rhythm your own

[30:25] little game here

[30:48] all right and then bring yourself back

[30:52] through

[30:54] Center and then from here

[30:58] I haven't thought of the creative way to

[30:59] get us down to the

[31:01] floor

[31:03] uh all right in fact let's just sit down

[31:08] Okay so we're going to come down onto

[31:12] the the

[31:13] floor and then from here um one of you

[31:18] is going to come into a bound angle pose

[31:23] so you're going to bring the soles of

[31:26] your feet together okay and then the

[31:29] other exactly is going to

[31:32] extend themselves so that they are as

[31:35] straight as they can be here with their

[31:37] feet against your shins now if either of

[31:40] you need props so if either of you needs

[31:42] to sit up onto a block or if both of you

[31:44] needs to sit up onto doesn't have to be

[31:46] a block actually so a folded blanket or

[31:48] a towel um just something where you can

[31:52] get a little lift in your sit spones is

[31:54] is great so if you're if you're

[31:56] struggling so you know you're struggling

[31:58] for example you feel like this you feel

[32:01] like you're rounding and your legs are

[32:04] going up really high or likewise if

[32:07] you're sitting with the leg straight and

[32:08] you also feel like you're being drawn

[32:10] back just sit up onto something a

[32:12] cushion a pillow a folded

[32:14] towel okay and then from here I would

[32:18] like you to take hold of each other's

[32:20] wrists again and you are going to each

[32:24] take an inhale and sit up

[32:26] tall and then as you exhale the person

[32:30] that's Antonio in this instance so the

[32:32] person with the leg straight is going to

[32:33] start to hinge forward from the hips

[32:35] while the person that's playing me with

[32:37] the bound angle is going to lean back

[32:39] now if you are Antonio try not to bend

[32:42] your knees too

[32:56] much and again you can communicate with

[32:59] each other if you need less

[33:01] [Music]

[33:05] more breath deep

[33:18] breaths inhale start to lift up

[33:21] tall and then we reverse keeping the

[33:24] legs exactly as they are the person who

[33:26] was just forward is now leaning back and

[33:29] the person that is in the bound angle is

[33:31] now coming forward that's good and just

[33:34] communicate to each other about what you

[33:36] need

[33:58] and inhale and lift it all the way back

[34:02] up and go ahead and gently

[34:06] release okay and then we are going to

[34:10] just simply swap roll so nothing very

[34:12] exciting we're just the person that had

[34:15] their legs straight now puts them into

[34:16] bound angle and then the person that was

[34:20] in Bound angle puts their legs straight

[34:23] so again we're going to take hold of

[34:26] each other's wrists we're going to sit

[34:27] up tall

[34:29] and then the person that's Antonio in is

[34:32] going to lean

[34:35] forward breathe

[34:58] and then inhale start to sit up

[35:02] tall and then exhale again just the

[35:06] person that was leaning forward is now

[35:07] leaning back

[35:36] take another breath or two

[35:46] here and start to bring yourself all the

[35:50] way back

[35:52] up now from here we're going to take our

[35:56] legs and we're both going to extend them

[36:02] wide just now couple things to say if

[36:06] you have one person who is quite a bit

[36:08] shorter or you have one person who has a

[36:10] lot more flexibility it might mean that

[36:13] your feet aren't necessarily feet foot

[36:15] to foot it might mean that one person's

[36:18] feet is against the other person's shin

[36:20] and or ankle area and that's fine okay

[36:23] so you need to to find what uh is is

[36:27] right for for the two of you okay now

[36:31] from here we are going to again take

[36:34] hold of each other's right wrist and

[36:36] just start by sitting up tall so we

[36:38] inhale up

[36:39] tall and then we're going to Exhale and

[36:42] lean the left arm back and lean into

[36:44] that back

[36:55] swing and start to bring up through

[36:58] Center and then I want you to lift that

[37:00] left arm up to the sky and then exhale

[37:03] lean over with your left hand towards

[37:05] your right

[37:19] foot and inhale lift all the way up

[37:22] through

[37:23] Center and then we're going to swap so

[37:25] we hold on to each other's left wrist

[37:27] now in inhale sit up tall and then

[37:30] exhale take that right hand back lean

[37:32] into that back

[37:42] swing and then inhale come back through

[37:45] Center swing that right arm up to the

[37:47] sky and then exhale take your right hand

[37:50] towards your left toes

[38:09] and then inhale take it up through

[38:13] Center and then from here you're going

[38:15] to actually take hold of hands uh so

[38:19] you're not crossing your arms now but

[38:21] you're just holding uh direct against so

[38:24] left to right right to left and then

[38:26] from here we are going to inhale and

[38:30] both St up tall and then one of you is

[38:32] going to come forward first as the other

[38:35] goes back so do you want to come forward

[38:37] first and just communicate

[39:00] and then take it back up through Center

[39:02] and then we're going to go to the other

[39:05] direction

[39:30] make it all the way back

[39:33] up and then from here just check how

[39:37] much time we have okay we have enough

[39:39] time so what I would like you to do now

[39:42] is I'd like you to both bend your knees

[39:45] and place it should feel good to place

[39:48] your feet in okay and then this is a

[39:51] super playful one so we are going to

[39:54] bring our heels to the floor and then

[39:56] bring the balls of our feet

[39:59] together

[40:04] okay yeah and then we're going to again

[40:07] hold hand hold wrist sorry but on the

[40:10] outside of the knees so we're not doing

[40:12] this with the knees outside the arms our

[40:14] arms are outside the knees okay and then

[40:17] we are going to take one set of legs up

[40:20] first so you can decide between

[40:24] you good let's sit

[40:28] all right and then the

[40:32] other that's it so this is a hamstring

[40:35] stretch you can really push against each

[40:37] other's feet and stretch it out are you

[40:52] breathing all right and then you're

[40:54] going to start to bend your knees very

[40:56] gently try to take them back down now if

[41:00] you got that and you want something a

[41:03] little bit

[41:09] more a little bit more we are going to

[41:14] try one more time but we're going to

[41:16] play with something here um if you if

[41:19] you didn't get it try again um it's

[41:22] again just something to play with so

[41:23] we're going to take uh one set of legs

[41:26] up

[41:28] okay there we go okay and then the other

[41:32] now I want you to we're going to do this

[41:34] side try to take the legs down and bring

[41:37] them to the outside of the

[41:41] arm and then bring it back and up and up

[41:46] and up and up that's it same on the

[41:49] other

[41:52] side and then

[41:55] back okay and then you can

[41:59] release and if you don't have a wall

[42:01] behind you you can also let yourself

[42:04] just flop back for a

[42:12] moment

[42:14] okay now from

[42:17] here we are going to give um our our

[42:22] partner our friends uh that's doing this

[42:24] with us a little bit of of Love uh um

[42:29] so good for you because you just get to

[42:32] receive twice um so what we're going to

[42:35] to do now is we're going to start to uh

[42:39] bring things down a little bit and

[42:41] instead of shavasana instead of just

[42:44] relaxing at the end of the session today

[42:47] we're going to do a little uh partner

[42:49] facial massage so first thing you need

[42:52] to do though is make sure that you and

[42:54] your partner are both comfortable so

[42:57] that might mean um grabbing a cushion or

[43:00] a pillow um so yes so what you're going

[43:06] to do is one of you is going to lie

[43:10] down and if you're using yoga mats

[43:13] that's great because that means that you

[43:15] can lie down on the the mat so if you

[43:18] can yes

[43:20] exactly have a guitar pick

[43:22] coming of

[43:25] course all right get yourself self

[43:29] comfortable oh okay this isn't where I

[43:31] wanted your head on the pillow but if

[43:34] you want to is that

[43:36] okay okay perfect all right so um the

[43:43] partner that is on the floor first now

[43:45] you guys will obviously swap um but um

[43:50] we we won't because I'll be talking it

[43:52] through both times and

[43:54] actually just to say did we have our

[43:56] hands on the floor at all if you want to

[43:59] wash your hands before touching your

[44:01] partner's face please feel free to do

[44:03] that uh if you feel like they're they're

[44:06] not particularly clean I think they're

[44:08] okay we didn't touch the floor

[44:11] um but H yeah so person on the floor can

[44:14] lay however they're comfortable so the

[44:17] way Antonio is laying is probably not

[44:19] going to be comfortable for most people

[44:22] um but uh you can lay with your legs

[44:25] just extended or you can lay with your

[44:28] knees bent uh that's always the most

[44:31] comfortable if you have lower back

[44:33] sensitivities yeah or you can extend the

[44:36] legs straight out if you have enough

[44:38] room for Antonio has a wall in front of

[44:40] him and then for the person that is

[44:44] going to be giving the the facial

[44:47] massage

[44:49] first you you have a few options here

[44:53] you can sit like this where you're

[44:55] sitting um on your shins though I think

[44:58] that's going to be less comfortable what

[45:00] you'll probably want to do is either sit

[45:04] with your legs crossed facing their head

[45:07] or you can even extend your legs all the

[45:10] way out and sit like this if you're

[45:11] comfortable like this so you just need

[45:13] to find what feels best to you and

[45:17] you're also welcome to to sit up onto a

[45:20] pillow at any point or onto a cushion if

[45:24] if that serves

[45:25] you okay

[45:33] okay so Antonio's just suggested that uh

[45:37] you could also use a little bit of of

[45:40] oil here so we've just done a a course

[45:42] together in um thai yoga massage and in

[45:46] in in Thai massage you don't usually use

[45:48] oils and in fact you don't usually even

[45:51] do facial massage but um in this

[45:53] particular course we we did do that as

[45:55] well but um

[45:58] that's just if you have oil at home to

[46:00] be honest that is good for um good for

[46:03] massage so if if you're into that and

[46:06] you want to use that please do feel free

[46:08] to grab that and and do that

[46:12] um all right

[46:16] so once you find your position here

[46:21] where one of you is receiving and the

[46:25] other is going to

[46:30] give just sit up tall if you're giving

[46:35] and if you're receiving just let

[46:37] yourself

[46:46] relax close your

[46:54] eyes and givers draw your hands together

[46:57] into

[46:59] prayer in front of your

[47:05] heart and just take a moment

[47:08] to drop into your

[47:11] energy honoring this being in front of

[47:15] you

[47:32] imagine infusing your hands with

[47:50] love and start to

[47:55] gently just bring your

[47:59] hands

[48:01] slowly to their

[48:07] head take a moment to land there

[48:32] and bring your thumbs to that third eye

[48:35] space Just Between the

[48:41] eyebrows you can very gently take one

[48:44] thumb and then the

[48:48] other just pressing down and then

[48:51] pulling

[48:54] back towards

[48:57] top of the

[49:10] brow then take the thumbs together and

[49:13] gently pull them down towards that brow

[49:18] that top of the brow line and then

[49:20] imagine that you just having this upside

[49:23] down umbrella that's opening up so

[49:25] you're going to pull down the center of

[49:28] the forehead and then thumbs are going

[49:31] to separate and roll around the sides to

[49:35] the temples and then just do a gentle

[49:39] circular massage

[49:49] there you can do that again thumbs to

[49:52] the center drawing

[49:55] down and then around

[50:00] and

[50:01] again little circular

[50:11] massage do one more

[50:32] and take your thumbs and bring them

[50:37] to bottom of the eyebrow the corner the

[50:41] inside corner of the eyebrow and then I

[50:42] want you to gently press down and trace

[50:46] the outline of the

[50:49] eyebrow you can just do that a few times

[50:52] you press down and it's just tracing the

[50:54] outline of that um the Upper Ridge of

[50:57] the eye

[51:11] socket and very very

[51:14] gently you can rest your

[51:17] thumbs just over the bridge of the

[51:20] nose so if you think about when people

[51:23] are stressed and they they kind of pinch

[51:25] that spot that brid the nose they pinch

[51:28] it when they're when they're feeling

[51:29] really

[51:30] stressed you're just going to rest your

[51:33] thumbs in the same place you're not

[51:34] pinching

[51:56] them slowy

[52:01] release and then I'd like you to very

[52:05] gently find that space where if you

[52:09] think about the very back of the teeth

[52:11] where the top and the bottom would meet

[52:14] there's this little divot that you can

[52:17] even feel in yourself so if you opened

[52:19] your your mouth you could find that

[52:21] little divot point in your

[52:23] cheek I just want you to very gently you

[52:27] can do this with your index and middle

[52:29] fingers or you could do it with your

[52:31] thumb whatever you prefer you're just

[52:34] going to very very gently circularly

[52:37] massage that area

[53:09] and then something that will feel

[53:11] probably a little strange but is really

[53:13] lovely to do is you're going to take

[53:15] your

[53:16] thumb and you're going to bring it to

[53:18] their filtrum which is that spot just

[53:21] under the nose at the center above the

[53:23] upper

[53:25] lip and you're just going to very gently

[53:27] press down

[53:30] there and in fact you can relax your

[53:32] index finger on that space under their

[53:35] lower lip on the chin just above the

[53:50] chin softly release your

[53:54] hand you can just slide your fingers

[53:58] down their jaw a few times pressing

[54:00] [Music]

[54:05] in and then do a little shampoo so as if

[54:09] you would get at the salon where you

[54:11] have your thumbs a bit centered and you

[54:14] can just shampoo around with your your

[54:17] fingers around their head

[54:42] go ahead and place your hands back on

[54:46] their

[54:51] head and in fact go ahead and you can

[54:54] cup their ears

[55:19] and slowly start to release

[55:47] and and each energetically thank the

[55:52] other or actually than the other and

[55:55] then when you're ready you're going to

[55:57] swap positions although Antonio is just

[56:00] going to stay here you good with

[56:03] that so go ahead and swap if it's your

[56:09] partner and you want to give each other

[56:10] a quick kiss in

[56:12] between you can do that

[56:30] so go ahead and settle into your new

[56:35] role so new receiver new

[56:41] giver and again new Giver I want you

[56:43] well actually both I want you to get

[56:45] yourself comfortable so do what you need

[56:47] to do with your legs if you're the

[56:50] receiver and likewise if you're the

[56:52] giver do what you need to do as far as

[56:54] if you want to sit up onto a cushion

[56:57] if you want to cross your legs if you

[56:58] want to extend them out to the sides if

[57:01] you prefer to sit onto your shins or

[57:04] onto a a pillow or a

[57:17] cushion and then new

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Partner fertility yoga is a practice in which two people, often a couple or a friend, do breath work, seated warm-ups, and guided stretches together, with the goal of relaxation and attentive touch. In Julie Ela Grace's session, it is aimed at people undergoing IVF and other fertility treatments, and the video says it suits both men and women. The partner does not have to be a romantic partner.
The session is described by its teacher as safe for anyone currently undergoing IVF or other fertility treatment processes, but the video's disclaimer says it is educational and not medical advice. It advises stopping any exercise if pain increases, moves, or new symptoms appear, and seeking advice from a physician or physical therapist. Check with your fertility clinic before starting any new movement practice.
The video does not claim that it improves IVF or any other fertility outcome. Its disclaimer states that no representations or guarantees are made that the exercises will improve a medical condition or function. Treat the session as a way to relax and spend attentive time with a partner during treatment, not as a medical intervention.
Start with spacing, so partners are staggered or facing each other at a distance that avoids collisions. Warm up individually first, then communicate before each stretch deepens. The teacher's rule is that the person being stretched says when it feels like enough, and that stopping is always acceptable.
The session uses a three-part belly, ribs, and chest breath: inhale through the nose so the belly, then the ribs, then the chest expand, and exhale in reverse. Participants are also asked to notice their breath and body without judging what they find. Those familiar with ocean-wave breath may use it, but it is optional.
Yes. The session's description states it is suitable for both men and women, and the teacher frames the practice as something two people do together. The emphasis throughout is on communication and listening, so either partner can take the role of the one being stretched or the one supporting.
