Flower Garland Set to Shiva Kirtan: A Five-Minute Video

A woman's hands string flowers onto a thread, one bloom at a time, while a chant rises underneath. That is the whole premise of a short video posted by Edo & Jo, the Australian mantra duo, in June 2013: make a flower garland in five minutes, set to the sound of Shiva. It is a small piece of work, under six minutes long, with no interview and no lecture. It is also a useful window onto how kirtan, the call-and-response chanting tradition, travels onto a screen, and what gets lost and kept in the trip.

What is the video actually showing?

The channel's own description frames the clip plainly: a garland made in five minutes, to the soundtrack of Shiva. There is no narration. The camera stays on the work, and the rhythm of the making does the pacing. A garland is built by repetition, one flower after another, each one held in place by the one before it. Watched alongside a chant built on repeated phrases, the match is almost literal. The craft and the music are doing the same thing at the same speed.

That is the strongest idea in the piece, and it is a formal one rather than a biographical one. Devotional practice across South Asian traditions has long treated the making of garlands and offerings as a form of worship in its own right. Whether Edo & Jo intend that reference is not stated in the material, so it is worth holding as a reading rather than a claim about the artists.

What does the audio sound like?

The published transcript is close to useless as a guide to the words. Its opening lines are fragments of what appears to be mis-recognized speech, mixed with Korean characters and nonsense syllables, so no lyric can be quoted with confidence. What can be heard in the fragments is a shape. A short, sung phrase is repeated in a call-and-response pattern, and the response is a rolling "woo hoo" and "hoo woo" that recurs across the middle of the clip. Near the end, the words "we're here" and a run of "be" and "cool" appear. These could be real lyrics or transcription artifacts; treat them as impressions, not as text.

Kirtan, in general terms, works this way. A leader sings a phrase and a group answers it, and the repetition is the practice. The listener is not asked to follow a story but to stay with a loop long enough for it to change how they feel. The Shiva chant here appears to follow that logic: few words, many returns, a steady pulse under the flowers.

Who are Edo & Jo, and where does this fit?

The channel's description introduces the duo as acclaimed Australian mantra musicians and singer-songwriters. It says they had spent the previous six years touring extensively across Australia, Asia and India, and that they had emerged at the front of kirtan's next generation. Their first album, Kirtan Alive, came out in 2012, and the description calls it one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. At the time of this upload, the description also says new chant and Sacred Sound Yoga albums were due in April 2014.

Read against that timeline, the garland video looks like an experiment in a different medium. Albums and live rooms are where kirtan usually lives. A five-minute visual piece asks a different question: can a chant carry a viewer through an image with no performance in front of them? The video suggests yes, at least for the length of a single offering.

Why does a clip like this still matter?

Most of the value here is in the approach, not in any large claim. Short, quiet videos of making things, paired with devotional sound, have become a familiar genre online, and this one was early to the form. Its modest view count, around 64,000 at the time of capture, places it inside a long tail of small devotional uploads rather than at the center of anything. That is not a failing. It is an accurate picture of how most practice-based media actually circulates.

What the piece offers a reader is a simple test for any chant recording: watch what the music asks your attention to do. Here, it asks you to notice repetition, to match your breath to a loop, and to stay with an ordinary task long enough for it to become something else.

Where to go from here

Watch the video once with the sound on and once with it muted, then count the repeated phrases in the chant for a full minute. If you want to go deeper into the tradition, look for the duo's albums named in the channel's description, Kirtan Alive and the chant and Sacred Sound Yoga releases announced for 2014, and compare the studio recordings with the looser, visual setting here. For the wider practice, read about call-and-response form in kirtan, and about garland-making as devotional work in South Asian traditions, before deciding what this small clip means to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

The video shows a flower garland being made in about five minutes, set to a Shiva chant. There is no narration, so the rhythm of the craft and the repetition of the music carry the piece. It was posted on the Mantrafy with Edo channel in June 2013.
Edo and Jo are described by their channel as acclaimed Australian mantra musicians and singer-songwriters. The channel says they toured extensively across Australia, Asia and India for six years before 2013. Their first album, Kirtan Alive, was released in 2012.
Kirtan is a devotional tradition of call-and-response chanting, in which a leader sings a phrase and a group answers it. Its power comes from repetition, which lets the listener settle into a loop rather than follow a narrative. The Shiva chant in this video follows that pattern.
Their first album was Kirtan Alive, released in 2012. The channel's description says it is one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. New chant and Sacred Sound Yoga albums were announced for April 2014.
Garland-making is a form of devotional craft in many South Asian traditions, and the repetitive work of stringing flowers mirrors the repetition of a chant. The video does not state its reasoning, so this pairing should be read as an interpretation. Its effect is to slow the viewer to the pace of an ordinary task.
The video's auto-generated transcript is mostly garbled and does not reliably record the words, so no lyric can be confirmed from it. The best route is to check the duo's official albums and their website, which the channel lists as www.edoandjo.com.
