Question 1

Who is Edo & Jo, and why do people care about their work?

Accepted Answer

Edo & Jo were an Australian duo of singer-songwriters, mantra musicians and yogis who toured extensively from 2008 to 2015 across Australia, South-East Asia, India and America. Edo Kahn came to the project from rock, having been signed to Virgin/EMI with his bands Gelbison and Kahn Brothers, and he is an APRA award-winning songwriter. Jo Mall Kahn was a singer-songwriter, a classically trained musician and a qualified yoga teacher, and her training gave the pair a grounding in both musical discipline and yoga practice. Their stated aim was to blend Eastern mantra with Western pop, producing music their site describes as both soothing and uplifting. Jo died in September 2015 shortly after a cancer diagnosis, and her voice and songs remain central to the project. The co-founded charity A Sound Life carries that legacy forward by bringing music and yoga free of charge to people in health care and underprivileged communities.

Question 2

What tradition or lineage does Edo & Jo's work belong to?

Accepted Answer

Their work sits within bhakti, the devotional path in which the repetition of divine names is the central act, and kirtan is the most visible form of that tradition in their output. Their third album draws on Sound Yoga, also known as Nada Yoga, which treats sound itself as a route into meditative absorption. The duo shares a mantra meditation practice into which they were initiated by their teacher, Sakthi Amma, and that named transmission matters because it places them inside a lineage rather than a loose spiritual aesthetic. Bhakti traditionally emphasises heart-centred devotion over technical display, which explains why their records keep the mantra front and centre rather than burying it under production. Their Sound Yoga workshops combine asana, mantra, chakra meditation and sound relaxation, showing how the chanting is meant to sit inside a wider yoga practice. BrightStar does not yet have a long-form article on this lineage, so the album notes and the Edo & Jo website are the best primary sources for now.

Question 3

Where should a complete newcomer start with Edo & Jo's work?

Accepted Answer

Start with Kirtan Alive (2012), their first album and one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. It establishes the core of their sound: mantra carried by clean, song-based arrangements that make chanting approachable for listeners who have never sat in a kirtan circle. From there, move to Bliss, which extends the same approach, and then to Chakra Meditation if your interest is in using the music for stillness. The third album, which draws on Sound Yoga and the mantra practice they were initiated into, rewards listeners who already have some comfort with chant. Listen to Kirtan Alive as a complete record rather than skipping to single tracks, because the album's pacing shows how the duo builds repetition into something meditative. Before buying, the official YouTube channel at youtube.com/@edoandjo is a practical way to hear the material and judge whether the aesthetic suits you.

Question 4

What makes Edo & Jo distinctive compared to other musicians in the kirtan and mantra space?

Accepted Answer

Most kirtan artists come to the form as devotional leaders first, whereas Edo & Jo came to it as songwriters, with Edo bringing a rock and pop background from Gelbison and Kahn Brothers and an APRA award for songwriting. Jo's classical training and her qualification as a yoga teacher gave the pair a rare combination of musical craft and embodied practice. Their concept of blending Eastern mantra with Western pop is more explicit than many peers, and it is the feature that separates them from purely traditional or purely commercial chant recordings. Their Sound Yoga workshops tie the music to a complete practice of asana, mantra, chakra meditation and sound relaxation, so the albums function as companions to a discipline rather than standalone products. Their touring span across Australia, South-East Asia, India and America, plus appearances at festivals such as Byron Spirit, Sydney Spirit, Bhakti Bliss, Bodhi and Bali Spirit, placed them within a wide international spiritual circuit. Because their active touring ended in 2015, much of what distinguishes them now lives in recordings and archived material.

Question 5

Who is Edo & Jo's work NOT for?

Accepted Answer

Listeners who want high-BPM electronic music or dance-floor energy will find little here, since the chant-based material is measured and meditative rather than driving. Purists who expect long, unadorned call-and-response kirtan with minimal production may find the Western pop framing too polished for their taste. Students looking for scholarly engagement with Sanskrit texts or detailed doctrinal study will not get that from albums, which are songs rather than lectures. Listeners who want new releases or live shows should know that touring activity in the record ends around 2015, and no upcoming events were available when this profile was compiled. Jo's passing in 2015 also means the duo as a working partnership no longer exists, which some fans find difficult to separate from the music itself. The catalogue suits people seeking soothing, devotional listening for practice, ceremony or quiet evenings, rather than those looking for a current touring act.

Question 6

How can I follow Edo & Jo's upcoming events, releases, and travel?

Accepted Answer

No upcoming events were available in the data compiled for this profile, so there are no confirmed dates to list. The most reliable starting point is the official site at edoandjo.com, which the duo's own description names as the primary voice for their work. The YouTube channel at youtube.com/@edoandjo is the other official channel listed, and it is the place to check for newly posted material. Spotify and Apple Music links are not in the records compiled here, so verify whether the catalogue is available on those platforms before assuming it is. Given that their touring era ran from 2008 to 2015, it is worth checking the lineups of festivals where they previously appeared, including Bali Spirit Festival and Bodhi Festival, to see whether any future appearance is announced. Followers interested in the duo's ongoing legacy can also look into A Sound Life, the charity they co-founded to bring music and yoga to people in health care and underprivileged communities.

Question 7

What does Edo & Jo's music actually sound like?

Accepted Answer

The music sits at the intersection of mantra chanting and Western pop songcraft, which is the duo's stated approach and the clearest guide to what to expect. Their site describes the result as both soothing and uplifting, and that balance is reflected in the way the material moves between meditative repetition and accessible melody. Kirtan, the call-and-response chanting form that their first album draws on, is built on repetition, so listeners should expect the mantra to be the structural center rather than a verse-chorus hook. The third album, drawing on Sound Yoga, pushes further into the meditative end of the range. Specific instrumentation, production credits and vocal technique are not documented in the data compiled for this profile, so any detailed claim about arrangements should be checked against the albums themselves. The honest summary is restraint over spectacle: chanted mantra, pop-influenced melody and a clear devotional intent, rather than high-energy performance.

Question 8

What are the essential Edo & Jo albums to know?

Accepted Answer

Kirtan Alive (2012) is the essential starting point, since it is their first album and one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. Bliss follows it and continues the same approach to devotional song, making it the logical second listen for anyone who connects with the debut. Chakra Meditation is the most clearly purposeful record in the catalogue, designed around the chakra system and suited to listeners who want music for stillness and inner focus. The third album draws on Sound Yoga (Nada Yoga) and the mantra meditation practice the duo was initiated into by their teacher Sakthi Amma, which makes it the most explicit statement of their spiritual lineage. Its title is not recorded in the data compiled for this profile, so check the official site for the full discography. For a listener building a small collection, Kirtan Alive and Chakra Meditation cover the core of the sound, with the third album best reserved for those already comfortable with chanting.

Question 9

Are there Edo & Jo songs or tracks specifically suited for meditation, yoga practice, or ceremony?

Accepted Answer

Chakra Meditation is the record most obviously suited to meditation, since its title and the duo's Sound Yoga work both tie the music to chakra-based practice. The Sound Yoga workshops they led combine asana, mantra, chakra meditation and sound relaxation, which suggests the music was made to accompany the stages of a yoga session rather than to be listened to passively. Kirtan Alive suits group settings, because kirtan is a communal form and the call-and-response structure translates well to gatherings and ceremony. For a home yoga practice, the third album's Sound Yoga and mantra meditation material is a natural fit for the closing portion of a session, when the body is still and the mind is ready for absorption. Individual track titles and timings are not recorded in the data compiled here, so students should preview selections on the official YouTube channel before building a sequence. Listeners who want a quieter, non-chanting background will likely find the material too present, since the mantra is the focus rather than ambient texture.

Question 10

What is Edo & Jo's teaching style, and what does a session or retreat with them feel like?

Accepted Answer

Edo & Jo taught as yoga teachers and retreat leaders, and their workshops were built around Sound Yoga, which combines asana, mantra, chakra meditation and sound relaxation in a single session. The structure suggests a progression from embodied movement through chanting toward guided stillness, with the sound work arriving once the body has been prepared. Between 2012 and 2014 they held monthly residencies at Ubud Yoga Barn in Bali, which gave their teaching a sustained home base rather than only one-off appearances. Jo's qualification as a yoga teacher and her classical training would have shaped the precision of the sessions, though first-hand accounts of the classroom atmosphere are not included in the data compiled for this profile. Newcomers should expect practice-led sessions where chanting is participatory rather than performed. Students who prefer a purely physical yoga class, without chanting or extended sound work, will find the approach different from mainstream asana instruction.
