Marathi Pop

Popular music genre from Maharashtra, India that fuses traditional Marathi folk forms with contemporary pop, rock, hip-hop, and electronic production.

What is Marathi Pop?

Marathi Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It blends elements of Western pop music with traditional Marathi folk music to create a unique sound that appeals to a wide audience. Marathi Pop is contemporary popular music performed in the Marathi language, emerging as a non-film counterpart to Marathi cinema songs and older non-film bhavgeet traditions. It pairs Indian pop and Bollywood-style production with regional melodic sensibilities and rhythms from Maharashtra.

The genre is characterized by catchy melodies, upbeat rhythms, and lyrics that often celebrate love, friendship, and the joys of life. Typical tracks use verse–pre-chorus–chorus structures, catchy hooks, and polished vocals with light ornamentation drawn from Hindustani classical practice. It is characterized by its upbeat, danceable rhythms and catchy melodies.

Origins & Lineage

The fusion and pop music scene in Maharashtra emerged prominently from the 1980s onward, as musicians began experimenting with blending traditional forms with modern sounds. Composer-singer-lyricist Avadhoot Gupte is considered a pioneering force in this cultural journey. His album with Vaishali Samant, Aika Dajiba (2002), was a signature release and hit Platinum Disc in sales. In 2003, he wrote, composed and sang Meri Madhubala. Both albums were termed ‘Combo Music’ as they were in a mix of Marathi and Hindi.

Marathi Pop draws on deep musical roots from Maharashtra’s folk traditions, particularly lavani, powada, abhanga, and koli geet—devotional, martial, and occupational song forms with centuries of history. The Bhakti movement of the 13th century and the Maratha Empire’s cultural flowering provided foundational rhythmic and melodic vocabularies. In recent decades, Marathi cinema witnessed a revival of regional sounds through blockbuster playback singing. The 2016 film Sairat, directed by Nagraj Manjule, featured a soundtrack by Ajay-Atul with songs like “Zingaat” that fuse lavani rhythms, folk melodies, and electronic elements.

The genre has gained popularity in recent years, with a new generation of talented artists emerging to bring fresh perspectives and innovative sounds to the scene. Marathi Hip Hop, a related genre combining traditional Marathi music with hip hop elements, is relatively new, having emerged in the last decade.

How It’s Practiced

Production ranges from acoustic band settings to synth-driven, dance-oriented arrangements, often featuring dholki-inspired grooves, electric bass, guitars, keyboards, and programmed drums. It often features traditional instruments such as the tabla, harmonium, and dholak, as well as modern electronic instruments. The genre is a fusion of traditional Marathi folk music with modern pop, rock, and hip-hop influences.

Lyrically, Marathi pop explores romance, friendship, youth culture, everyday life, and regional pride, and it is distributed through private albums, television music programs, and—especially in the 2010s and 2020s—streaming platforms and short-video apps. Contemporary Marathi pop music fuses traditional Marathi folk with contemporary pop, Afrobeats, and indie sounds, attracting a massive following among younger audiences.

Recent breakthrough songs like “Nauvari Pahije” (May 2023) and “Gulabi Sadi” (February 2024) by Sanju Rathod surpassed 200 million YouTube views and went viral, inspiring over 5 million Instagram reels. “Gulabi Sadi” marked the first Marathi song to be displayed on New York’s Times Square.

Marathi Pop Today

Maharashtra’s first festival dedicated to Marathi pop culture, RADA 2026, featuring music, standup comedy and podcasts, signals the genre’s growing cultural prominence. Marathi pop music is now in line with global music. Even songs and poetry made by artists from villages are now in sync with world music.

Listeners encounter Marathi Pop primarily through digital streaming platforms including Spotify, YouTube, Gaana, and short-form video apps like Instagram Reels. Marathi Pop is popular among young people in Maharashtra and is often used in Bollywood films. Major music labels distributing the genre include Saregama, T-Series, Times Music, Zee Music Company, and regional independent labels.

Artists like Aarya Ambekar, Adarsh Shinde, and Hrishikesh Ranade standout for their ability to balance classical Marathi influences with innovative pop arrangements, making the genre accessible to a broad audience. Other prominent artists include Lata Mangeshkar, Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, the duo Ajay-Atul, Vaishali Samant, and emerging viral artists like Sanju Rathod.

Common Misconceptions

Marathi Pop is not synonymous with Marathi film music (cinema playback songs), though both exist in parallel and influence each other. The genre specifically refers to non-film popular music created for independent release, though crossover is common.

It is not simply “Indian pop sung in Marathi.” The genre maintains distinct regional characteristics drawn from Maharashtra’s folk traditions—particularly dholki rhythms, lavani cadences, and Hindustani-influenced melodic phrasing—that differentiate it from Hindi pop or other regional Indian pop genres.

While Marathi Pop incorporates devotional themes inherited from bhakti traditions, it is primarily a secular, youth-oriented commercial genre focused on romance, friendship, and contemporary life rather than spiritual practice.

Historically, clubs were not allowed to play Marathi songs, however successful they were. This stigma has gradually dissolved as the genre has gained mainstream acceptance and global visibility.

How to Begin

Begin with landmark albums and viral tracks: Avadhoot Gupte and Vaishali Samant’s Aika Dajiba (2002), the Sairat soundtrack by Ajay-Atul (2016), and recent hits like Sanju Rathod’s “Gulabi Sadi” (2024). These provide entry points spanning two decades of stylistic evolution.

Explore curated Marathi Pop playlists on Spotify, YouTube Music, or Gaana to discover both established playback singers (Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam) and independent pop artists (Aarya Ambekar, Adarsh Shinde). Regional streaming charts and Instagram trending audio can surface current viral tracks.

For context on the folk roots that inform contemporary production, investigate traditional forms: lavani (theatrical dance songs), powada (heroic ballads), and abhanga (devotional poetry-songs). Understanding these ancestral genres clarifies the rhythmic and melodic DNA of modern Marathi Pop.

Attend live performances if accessible—college festivals, cultural programs, and dedicated pop culture events like RADA now regularly feature Marathi Pop artists, providing immersive encounters with the genre’s energy and regional pride.
