Wellness Retreat
Description
This 13-day wellness retreat in northern Tanzania pairs small-group safari travel with daily qigong, breathwork and guided reflection. It is led by qigong and meditation teacher Amy Pattee Colvin and runs through Moshi, Tarangire, Lake Eyasi, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. It suits people who want a somatic safari rather than a checklist tour: time in vast landscapes, an unhurried pace, and practical tools for settling an overworked nervous system. The group is capped at twelve travelers.
What to Expect
The retreat begins with two nights in Moshi, where the first evening is set aside for rest, hydration and adjusting to the time change. The first full day brings a coffee plantation visit in Materuni village, from harvest through brewing, then a moderate two-hour walk through the Kilimanjaro foothills to Materuni Waterfall, with the first qigong practice along the way.
From there the group spends nine days in parks and preserves. Tarangire is known for its baobab trees and elephant herds. Around Lake Eyasi, on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, you spend time with the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities on earth, and the Datoga, known for metalwork and farming. The route continues past Olduvai Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into the Serengeti for three nights in the south and two in the north near the Mara River, where the group hopes to see the wildebeest migration. The final morning descends into Ngorongoro Crater before the transfer to the airport.
Drives are planned around patient observation instead of rushing between sightings. Qigong happens daily or nearly daily, often outdoors: stretching beside the vehicles at midday, among granite outcrops, or in quiet spots on the plains. There is also shared reflection and conversation about self-acceptance, compassion and joy. Evenings are for dinner, rest and talk at camp.
About Amy Pattee Colvin
Amy Pattee Colvin is a somatic educator who teaches qigong, meditation and compassion practices for capable, driven people whose nervous systems are stuck in overdrive. She blends neuroscience, compassion training and Taoist movement to help people settle an overactive mind and release physical holding patterns. Her qigong path began in the mid-1990s, and for nearly 30 years she has studied under Leong Tan, teaching Sum Faht® Meditation and the forms he developed. In 2011 she began teaching qigong and meditation classes at Google's offices in Washington state, streamed to 16 cities around the world.
The Setting and Stays
The base in Moshi is the Stella Maris Hotel, where the group stays two nights and has dinner on the first full day. The rest of the eleven nights are in hand-selected tented camps and lodges within natural landscapes, including Angata Tarangire Camp, Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge, Marera Valley Lodge, Moyo Tented Camp, Moyo Migration Camp and Angata Ngorongoro Camp, or similar. Private transfers connect Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) with the lodging. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided on the main itinerary, 33 meals in total.
Before You Go
This journey is built around daily embodied practice, shared reflection and unhurried pacing. If you want a high-speed safari or are not interested in intentional movement and self-inquiry, it may not be the right fit.
Included are park, conservation area and tribal community land fees, English-speaking Tanzanian driver guides, and interaction with members of at least three Tanzanian indigenous communities, including the Chagga, Hadzabe and Datoga.
Not included are international airfare to JRO, the Tanzanian tourist visa (obtained online before departure), gratuities for guides and lodge staff, alcoholic beverages, sodas and personal items. Comprehensive travel insurance is required for all participants.
