New York City is the comedy capital of the world. On any given night, you can catch a household name working out new material in a basement club or discover the next big thing at a Brooklyn open mic. Here is every comedy venue worth your time.

Read · 4 sections

The Legends

Comedy Cellar (MacDougal Street) — The most famous comedy club in America. Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer, and Jerry Seinfeld still drop in regularly. The Saturday late shows are where surprises happen. Book early — shows sell out fast.

Gotham Comedy Club (Chelsea) — A polished, mid-size room that attracts top touring comics. The weekend lineups rival any club in the country.

The New Wave

The Stand (Union Square) — Opened in 2012 and has become one of the city's best rooms. Great food, excellent sightlines, and a roster of working headliners who test material here before specials.

New York Comedy Club (Multiple locations) — Affordable shows with consistently strong lineups. The East Village location has the best vibe.

Underground & Alternative

Caveat (Lower East Side) — Not strictly comedy, but hosts some of the most creative shows in the city. Think comedy-meets-TED-talk-meets-variety-show.

The Tiny Cupboard — A literal apartment living room that hosts free comedy shows. The intimacy is unmatched. Follow them on Instagram for showtimes.

Open Mic Nights

For aspiring comics or those who love the raw energy of new material: East Ville Comedy Club runs nightly open mics, Creek & the Cave (now in Austin) alumni have scattered across Brooklyn venues, and Stand Up NY on the Upper West Side offers regular bringer shows.

The best strategy: go on a weeknight. Smaller crowds mean better seats, and comics tend to take bigger risks when the pressure is off.
