[0:00] What is spirituality?
[0:03] I know this sounds like a very obvious
[0:05] question to a lot of people because no
[0:06] matter which cobwebbed corner of this
[0:09] planet you go to, you will get an answer
[0:11] from somebody with absolute confidence.
[0:15] That is why we have the array and
[0:18] spectrum of religion and spiritual
[0:20] disciplines that have been offered to us
[0:22] since the beginning of time. and the
[0:24] person offering it to you comes with the
[0:27] full force of trust me bro this is the
[0:31] answer this is the conclusion to the
[0:33] meaning of life but
[0:37] I've really tried all of them I've been
[0:40] to the spiritual buffet and I've tasted
[0:42] a little bit of Buddhism a little bit of
[0:44] Christianity a little bit of this and
[0:46] that and
[0:48] I don't know maybe you feel the same way
[0:50] but none of them fully have satisfied my
[0:54] hunger
[0:55] and maybe I'm broken and I don't know
[0:58] maybe you feel the same way. I can't say
[1:00] but I feel like it's more personal.
[1:04] The relationship to God or to the
[1:08] mystery is not something that can be
[1:11] contained behind the walls of a temple
[1:14] or in the four corners of a book on some
[1:18] pages. Those things have a lot of lot to
[1:20] offer and they can definitely give you
[1:23] some substance and give you some
[1:25] direction. But
[1:28] I don't know I feel like spirituality is
[1:31] such a personal thing that each of us
[1:34] need to start with this basic question.
[1:38] What is spirituality and what is
[1:40] spiritual practice? And from here we can
[1:43] really begin to excavate. We can become
[1:47] archaeologist
[1:48] within ourselves
[1:50] and find out what what it means to us
[1:54] because taking somebody's secondhand map
[1:57] is you know maybe we will get lost.
[2:01] Plato said that knowledge is like
[2:05] recollection
[2:07] that knowledge is not something that you
[2:13] that you come up with by yourself. It's
[2:15] actually something that is just
[2:17] lingering in the ether and you kind of
[2:22] pluck it out of the sky or you tune into
[2:24] it like a radio. And when if you are if
[2:28] you're tuned correctly, then aha, you
[2:32] get some clarity. Michael Jackson once
[2:34] said uh he woke up in the middle of the
[2:36] night at like 3:00 a.m. and it's like I
[2:38] have to record this song because if I
[2:39] don't record this melody it'll be given
[2:42] to Prince.
[2:45] So it's like there are lingerings
[2:50] in which we must be focus enough to pay
[2:52] attention to. And that's the the topic
[2:56] of this uh of this show today is is just
[3:01] is just exploring this idea of what is
[3:04] spiritual practice. And of course I have
[3:07] nothing to offer you but my own vomit.
[3:11] So if you want the contagion of this
[3:14] question then come along. Welcome back
[3:17] to the flowerhead show only here on the
[3:20] Be Here Now Network. So, let's tune in
[3:23] to the intro for a sec and then we'll
[3:25] jump into it. We'll dive right in. Okay,
[3:26] here it is. Flower head show.
[3:31] It's the flower head show
[3:36] for our heads and show
[3:40] with your host.
[3:43] It's the flower head.
[3:50] The question, what is God?
[3:53] What is life? What is happening to me?
[3:57] This is the nature of all spiritual
[4:00] practices. This is where scripture comes
[4:03] out of this question because something
[4:05] is happening. You know, here I can feel
[4:07] my hands. I can I'm moving through
[4:10] something that we call space and time.
[4:12] Something mysterious is happening. And
[4:16] well, spiritual practice is an is an
[4:19] attempt to build a relationship with
[4:21] this happening, to build a relationship
[4:23] with this mystery.
[4:26] And the Buddha said asking these
[4:28] questions can get us in a loop or it can
[4:32] keep us binded to unanswerable questions
[4:35] which just creates more suffering. But I
[4:38] think that there is use in pondering
[4:43] these things because through pondering
[4:46] these things it is almost like we become
[4:50] we become yeah archaeologist
[4:53] archaeologists into our own selves. We
[4:55] can excavate the dirt of our mind to
[4:58] bring it back to the thing that Plato
[5:00] said that it's all recollection. It's
[5:02] not about building a better philosophy.
[5:05] In some ways, it's about clearing
[5:09] away what is blocking us. It's like
[5:12] getting the correct prescription so that
[5:14] we can see it because we are in it. We
[5:20] are in it. Whatever the mystery is, we
[5:22] are in it. And there's not really uh
[5:25] some ABC steps that you need to take to
[5:29] get there because well, welcome. You're
[5:32] already there. You're not going to find
[5:33] it by thinking harder. But sometimes we
[5:37] need to think harder to exhaust
[5:39] ourselves into the place where
[5:44] you just give up and then it seems as if
[5:47] it reveals itself in these in in this
[5:50] space. Maybe a mantra does not have
[5:54] power because it's some magic cheat code
[5:56] or some magic words or sounds. A mantra
[6:00] is sacred because it takes all of the
[6:03] clutter and just shuts it up. It's a
[6:06] retuning, a refocusing
[6:09] of your mind. Our mind is so distracted
[6:13] that the mantra just takes all the
[6:14] clutter and just says, "Okay, shut up
[6:16] over there. Shut up over here. Walk this
[6:18] narrow path." And then you just your
[6:22] attention becomes a single point. It's
[6:24] the same thing as breathing, focusing on
[6:27] the breath. When we can focus on on one
[6:30] single thing, the vision becomes less
[6:34] pulled in different directions. How do
[6:37] we develop a relationship with the
[6:40] myster? I'm giving you bad advice
[6:42] telling you that you need to just make a
[6:44] relationship with the mystery as if
[6:45] you're not already in in an inherent
[6:48] symbiotic relationship. Your own eyes
[6:51] are the thing the thing you are already
[6:53] there. I have this teacher in India, his
[6:55] name is Bavani Baba. And he always tells
[6:57] me that spiritual practice starts with
[7:01] respecting yourself. And I that always
[7:03] felt like an obvious sort of copout
[7:05] answer, but I'm realizing that it's
[7:08] actually so deep because what does
[7:10] respecting yourself mean?
[7:13] What does respecting yourself mean?
[7:16] Well, it means being gentle to yourself.
[7:22] It means being a friend to yourself. It
[7:26] means not allowing your mind to be
[7:28] catapulted into every emotional impulse
[7:31] that arises. How often do you do it? I
[7:34] do it all the time. You know, I before I
[7:37] turn this camera on had all kinds of
[7:39] emotions that uh you know is not
[7:43] friendly to myself
[7:45] every day. you know, anger with the
[7:48] world, an inability to accept what is or
[7:52] what's going to come.
[7:55] Every spiritual tradition eventually
[7:57] confronts the same problem.
[7:59] You, your habits, your attachments, your
[8:03] fear, your pride,
[8:06] the the endless ability to deceive
[8:10] yourself. We all want to go to the
[8:12] temple and find the serenity there. But
[8:15] the first temple that we must sweep is
[8:19] ourselves. This is why spiritual
[8:22] practice
[8:24] starts with selfrespect. Because if you
[8:27] can become someone that you can rely on,
[8:31] if you can become something sacred, then
[8:34] this life no longer becomes something
[8:35] casual.
[8:37] It becomes something.
[8:41] It becomes something.
[8:43] Then when you meet somebody, you are not
[8:46] hypnotized by all the judgments that you
[8:49] impose and overlay onto this world.
[8:54] You look at them and you see them for
[8:56] who they really are.
[8:59] You meet them in this space of the
[9:01] mystery, which is, I guess you can say,
[9:05] love. You look at them in the eyes and
[9:07] you don't say, "Oh, this person's got a
[9:09] stupid haircut or they wear a stupid
[9:11] pink hoodie or whatever the the initial
[9:16] thing that the mind gravitates towards.
[9:19] You look at them and you say, "Here I am
[9:21] somehow in this strange experience that
[9:24] I've shrugged off and just called life."
[9:29] But actually, it's not just this life.
[9:32] It is
[9:34] it is something so unexplainable that I
[9:36] have to package it into this into this
[9:39] word so that I don't freak out. But when
[9:42] you when you give yourself the
[9:45] opportunity to freak out after you calm
[9:48] down, you look another person in their
[9:50] eyes and you say like what Ramdas said,
[9:52] "How how'd you get in there? I'm in this
[9:56] one. I'm in this one and you are in that
[9:58] one."
[10:00] Isn't it weird?
[10:03] Here we are together
[10:05] in the eternity temporarily
[10:09] manifested into a bundle of atoms
[10:12] staring at each other. All of the chaos
[10:15] of the universe and the spitting of
[10:18] galaxies and we found each other sharing
[10:21] a moment temporarily.
[10:25] This is so much more beautiful than the
[10:28] judgments that our life is trying to
[10:30] distract us into. We are in a hypnosis.
[10:35] We are in a hypnosis. It's true. We are
[10:36] in a hypnosis.
[10:39] And uh
[10:43] yeah, I mean the universe is doing
[10:45] something deeply personal.
[10:47] You might not feel it all the time
[10:48] because of this hypnosis, but I truly
[10:52] believe that something
[10:55] has come together for you to experience
[10:59] life. In each moment that you are
[11:01] distracted, you are missing. You are
[11:04] missing the most important thing. You
[11:06] don't need any religious permission or
[11:10] some meditation practice or some dietary
[11:14] restriction in order to enter into this
[11:18] space because the authority
[11:22] has been given to you by the fact that
[11:24] you are alive.
[11:26] So when we ask this question to bring it
[11:29] back to the beginning, what is spiritual
[11:31] spirituality and what is spiritual
[11:32] practice? It's about how can we get
[11:35] here? How can we clean our eyes so that
[11:39] we are seeing this?
[11:43] This is why you are alive. This is why I
[11:45] am alive. We are here to to remember.
[11:50] We are here to remember. And we must we
[11:55] must do our best to not let our
[11:58] judgments
[12:02] justify
[12:05] this repetitive cycle of being lost and
[12:08] confused.
[12:10] Because if you are strong and you
[12:13] reflect that strength in our
[12:14] interaction, then I remember who I am.
[12:18] If when you remember who you are, I
[12:19] remember who I am. Because it's the same
[12:23] thing as like if you were around
[12:24] somebody that is an if you were
[12:26] around somebody that is sad,
[12:29] these feelings are contagious. You even
[12:31] if someone laughs, you don't even know
[12:33] what they have to laugh, what they're
[12:34] laughing about for you to sort of just
[12:37] giggle yourself. If you see someone
[12:39] crying, your emotions get brought to
[12:41] that space. There is a gravity. There is
[12:44] an aura in which we are reflecting into
[12:46] the world and it reacts to that.
[12:49] It is our duty for ourselves
[12:52] to try and be as aligned as possible
[12:55] because not only is it good for our own
[12:58] experience, but it reverberates and
[13:01] vibrates
[13:02] the world into a into it elevates the
[13:05] world. I don't know. I don't need some
[13:07] certainty that God exists. I don't need
[13:10] some certainty to in some doctrine
[13:15] because I've I've gone through I've
[13:17] tried pushing them all away. I've tried
[13:19] accepting them and no matter what I'm
[13:21] always just left with myself. I've been
[13:24] waiting for the savior
[13:28] in in culture. Society is having us wait
[13:32] for a savior.
[13:35] It's not coming.
[13:37] But here you are. you are already here.
[13:40] So I feel as if we have to pull
[13:43] ourselves out and be that
[13:48] we have to be that for ourselves and be
[13:50] that for the world because we are have a
[13:53] we have a big war right now. It is a
[13:57] spiritual war happening. Not only is the
[13:59] physical world at war but that is
[14:03] because of our inner war. We are all
[14:06] lost and our culture wants us lost
[14:10] because there are they're harvesting our
[14:12] energy. You know, if you look around,
[14:14] it's it's like uh I'm from America. When
[14:18] I look out into the culture I was raised
[14:20] with, it's almost as if they want me
[14:22] wounded because they are trying to
[14:24] extract
[14:25] my life force for their personal
[14:28] benefit. Whether it's voting or whether
[14:31] it's to buy a product, they give me some
[14:34] emotional wound. This is what beauty is.
[14:36] This is the standard of beauty. Hey, you
[14:38] don't look like this, but if you buy
[14:40] this product, hey, life isn't perfect,
[14:43] but if you vote for this person,
[14:46] I'm in my 30s now. I've been around a
[14:48] bit. And I'm I've I've given it I've
[14:53] given these these false prophets my
[14:56] energy long enough to know that I have
[14:58] not got the return on my investment.
[15:01] However, when I ask the question, what
[15:04] is spirituality? And I begin thinking,
[15:08] the power is reclaimed to myself,
[15:12] I
[15:14] take the authority and I feel the shift
[15:18] happen.
[15:19] So, I guess what what the point of this
[15:22] video is, I know I'm kind of ranting,
[15:24] but it's like, okay, what is
[15:25] spirituality? It is a asking that
[15:28] question.
[15:30] asking that question and you will come
[15:32] to a conclusion on your own self
[15:36] because we all have different
[15:37] predicaments. We are all being
[15:38] confronted with with different obstacles
[15:41] and different environments that are
[15:43] going to need a different tool set to
[15:47] navigate.
[15:50] Not all of us are hiking the mountains.
[15:54] Some of us are in the ocean. Some of us
[15:56] are in the desert. Some of us are in the
[15:58] forest. We need different tools.
[16:01] A sailboat's not going to help you if
[16:03] you're in the forest.
[16:07] So I think asking this question, what is
[16:12] spirituality itself is a practice.
[16:17] Engage into this question. Sit silently
[16:19] with yourself
[16:22] and exhaust the question until you get
[16:24] an answer.
[16:27] And that's not to say deny the spiritual
[16:29] books, deny society, deny the fact that
[16:33] you know you have to go to work. I'm not
[16:34] telling you to drop out. I'm just saying
[16:37] to rub your eyes
[16:40] and try to see
[16:43] try to see how we can have how we can be
[16:48] realize the mystery.
[16:51] How can we move moment to moment in that
[16:54] space while we are at work, while we are
[16:57] engaging with somebody, while we are in
[16:59] a relationship with the people we love?
[17:04] As we walk through this life, how can we
[17:06] see clearly the mystery? How can we meet
[17:10] the mystery in each moment?
[17:14] What is spirituality?
[17:17] Sometimes we ask the wrong questions.
[17:19] I'm not even sure that's the right one
[17:20] to ask.
[17:22] But it's what's given me a mirror to
[17:25] look at
[17:27] because sometimes we ask,
[17:30] you know, the big questions and feel a
[17:33] bit abandoned.
[17:36] Why God? Why God? Why have you given me
[17:39] this life? Why have you given me this
[17:41] suffering?
[17:44] Maybe this is not the right question.
[17:47] I'm just a YouTuber. I cannot tell you
[17:49] what the correct question is. This is
[17:51] the whole purpose of your life is to
[17:55] figure it out. But we are not even
[17:57] asking. It feels like
[18:00] there is there is a tremendous freedom
[18:06] in saying I don't know
[18:10] what is happening but it's extraordinary
[18:11] that it's happening at all.
[18:14] Something is here.
[18:17] Something is aware.
[18:21] Something has appeared
[18:25] as this improbable, irrational,
[18:29] nearly impossible thing that you call
[18:32] whoever you are. I don't know. Maybe we
[18:34] start there.
[18:36] Maybe that's the place. I'm sorry to
[18:40] freak out with you here, but this is
[18:41] just on my mind today. And I don't even
[18:44] know if I'm making sense. The moment we
[18:47] try to name it, we almost shrink it to
[18:52] our limited vocabulary.
[18:56] This
[18:58] is
[19:00] an intuition. It is not a concept.
[19:05] This is
[19:08] in
[19:09] it is an isness. It is a state of being
[19:13] more than it is a state of belief. The
[19:16] mystery doesn't require any belief.
[19:19] It is just
[19:23] a place where you sit internally
[19:27] and when you are sitting in the place
[19:29] internally your eyes see it externally.
[19:34] Ramana Maharshi said inside and outside
[19:37] they mean the same thing or they mean
[19:40] nothing at all. I used to think
[19:43] psychedelics were the answer because
[19:44] they brought you to some extraordinary
[19:47] moment. Everything shifts and it it is
[19:50] proof that there is something deeper
[19:52] beyond my my ordinary state of
[19:56] perception.
[19:58] There's there's more expans. It's
[20:00] expansive. It's expanded. It's it's
[20:03] bigger than I thought and it is bigger
[20:06] than I thought
[20:08] but it's spirituality is not about
[20:11] chasing infinite visions and expansions
[20:14] and and this is and more and ah it's
[20:18] about being
[20:21] here how can we bring it here we don't
[20:25] have to bring it see this is what I mean
[20:27] when I say we we are at a disadvantage
[20:34] when we try to conceptualize it to our
[20:36] limited vocabulary because it brings us
[20:40] out of it.
[20:42] My friend Jordan always says something
[20:44] that's so true. It's like when you see a
[20:46] sunset, you're there. Wow, it's so
[20:50] beautiful. It makes you understand
[20:51] everything about life almost. But as
[20:54] soon as you say, oh, it's so beautiful,
[20:57] you add a layer over it. You have now
[21:00] removed yourself from the beauty and and
[21:03] boxed it into a concept into a pack. You
[21:06] put it onto a shelf for you to uh you
[21:09] know admire
[21:13] instead of just being immersed.
[21:20] I understand why the Buddha said just
[21:22] like shut up dude shut up. to bring it
[21:25] back. You know, I was critiquing the
[21:26] Buddha in the beginning, but now I I I
[21:30] agree with them. I forfeit. I agree. Why
[21:33] are we talking at all? We can just we
[21:37] can just love. But I mean there we do
[21:39] need to we do need to be humans also. We
[21:41] do need to try our best to say it. And
[21:44] Jack Carowak said, "One day I will find
[21:46] the words and they will be simple.
[21:50] One day we will be able to be able to
[21:52] find the simple words of the sunset
[21:55] where we say it and it's just ah
[22:02] my friend Jose told me the story once
[22:04] that the Buddha was talking to well the
[22:07] Buddha would talk to many different
[22:08] people and he would give many different
[22:10] prescriptions based on who he was
[22:13] talking to. He had to give you the
[22:15] prescription of meet you at your level,
[22:17] meet you in your playing field. And he
[22:20] was talking to a group of sages and he
[22:22] gave them the secret message
[22:25] and that message
[22:28] was uph.
[22:30] And in that moment they all understood.
[22:34] I was talking to Duncan Trussell
[22:37] and his mom had just died
[22:41] and he was going through
[22:43] what we are all going to go through.
[22:45] What some of you have already been
[22:47] through
[22:49] and
[22:51] in acceptance of reality and the pain
[22:55] that comes with being confronted with
[23:00] the most precious thing being taken from
[23:02] you. the thing that gave you life being
[23:05] removed from your life.
[23:09] and he found himself in Hawaii in a
[23:12] swimming pool with Roshi Joan and Ramdas
[23:17] and he was just sad and he was telling
[23:20] me this story
[23:22] and
[23:24] he even though he's in this swimming
[23:26] pool with the most incredible
[23:29] uh spiritually aware enlightened beings
[23:32] of our generation and
[23:36] he's just you know not able to enjoy it
[23:38] and he said Ramdas looked over at him
[23:40] and just said, "Ah."
[23:44] And for a moment, he snapped out of it.
[23:47] You can go watch the Duncan Trussell
[23:49] podcast. We we we we talked about this
[23:51] on his show. And I have realized that my
[23:54] search
[23:56] was one of the things creating the
[23:58] distance.
[23:59] What is spirituality? I don't know. This
[24:02] is a question we all need to ask. But I
[24:05] feel as if it's less about a it's less
[24:09] about going somewhere or progressing
[24:12] somewhere or doing something and more
[24:15] about
