[0:18] an adaptation from one of my favorite
[0:21] books
[0:22] the life of Buddha
[0:24] by Andre Ferdinand Harold
[0:29] this Magical Tale tells the story of
[0:32] Prince Siddhartha
[0:33] who was born into a life of luxury
[0:36] and went on to find Enlightenment and
[0:39] become the Buddha
[0:42] originally published in French in 1922
[0:46] and later translated into English by
[0:49] Paul Blum
[0:51] the book is a compilation of several
[0:53] classic Buddhist texts
[0:55] including the buddhacharita
[0:59] valita vistara
[1:01] and the jataka tales
[1:05] all of these ancient texts have a
[1:08] lyrical Beauty and devotion that make
[1:10] the mystical knife in times of the
[1:11] Buddha come alive
[1:13] [Music]
[1:15] like all of us Siddhartha was a man who
[1:20] struggled and searched longed and loved
[1:24] he thirsted for truth like a Wanderer
[1:27] lost in the desert
[1:28] and ultimately he found this truth in
[1:31] the depths of his being
[1:33] [Music]
[1:37] Soulful Explorer and an extraordinary
[1:39] Sage his life is a reminder of the
[1:42] awakened presence but lives inside us
[1:45] all
[1:45] foreign
[1:48] whether you experience this story as
[1:50] Legend myth or reality
[1:54] I hope these beautiful words touch your
[1:56] heart as they've touched mine
[1:58] [Music]
[2:01] so sit back and relax
[2:04] rest your body and mind
[2:07] as you travel back in time
[2:10] to the mystical world of the Buddha
[2:14] may his journey Inspire your own Quest
[2:18] to remember who you are
[2:22] [Music]
[2:31] [Music]
[2:36] [Music]
[2:48] Serene and magnificent was the city
[2:51] where once had dwelt the great hermit
[2:54] kapina
[2:57] it seemed to be built out of some
[2:59] fragment of the sky
[3:02] the walls were like clouds of light
[3:06] and the houses and Gardens radiated a
[3:09] Divine splendor
[3:14] stones
[3:15] everywhere
[3:18] within its Gates
[3:21] Darkness was as little known as poverty
[3:24] foreign
[3:28] Silver Moon beams fingered each turret
[3:32] city was like a pond of lilies
[3:34] [Music]
[3:36] by day when The Terraces were bathed and
[3:39] Golden Sunshine
[3:41] city was like a river of lotuses
[3:44] [Music]
[3:50] King shunodana reigned in kapilavastu
[3:55] he was its brightest ornament
[3:59] he was kindly and generous
[4:02] modest and just
[4:05] he brought light into the world and he
[4:08] pointed out the true path to those who
[4:10] were close to him
[4:13] his great wisdom gained for him many
[4:16] friends
[4:18] and a Starlight intensifies the
[4:20] brightness of the moon
[4:22] so did their Brilliance enhance his
[4:26] splendor
[4:27] [Music]
[4:31] you know
[4:32] King of the Shakira race had wed many
[4:35] queens
[4:37] his favorite among these was Maya
[4:42] she was very beautiful
[4:45] it was as if the goddess Lakshmi herself
[4:48] had strayed into the world
[4:51] when she spoke it was like the song of
[4:54] birds in the spring and her words were
[4:57] sweet and pleasant
[5:02] her hair was the color of the black bee
[5:05] her forehead was as chased as a diamond
[5:09] her eyes as cool as a young Blue Lotus
[5:12] leaf
[5:15] she was virtuous
[5:17] she desired the happiness of her
[5:19] subjects
[5:21] she was truthful and her conduct was
[5:24] exemplary
[5:26] [Music]
[5:29] king shudodana and queen Maya lived
[5:32] quietly and happily in kapilavastu
[5:36] [Music]
[5:38] one day
[5:40] the same hour that spring was born
[5:43] a Dream came to Maya as she slept
[5:48] she saw a young elephant descending from
[5:51] the sky
[5:53] it had six great tusks
[5:57] it was as white as the snow on
[5:58] mountaintops
[5:59] [Music]
[6:02] Maya sought enter her womb and thousands
[6:05] of gods suddenly appeared before her
[6:08] foreign
[6:10] songs and Maya understood that Nevermore
[6:14] would she know disquietude or hatred or
[6:17] anger
[6:22] then she awoke
[6:24] she was happy
[6:28] it was a happiness she had never felt
[6:30] before
[6:31] [Music]
[6:34] arising she walked in the gardens until
[6:36] she came to a little wood
[6:39] where she found a shaded seat
[6:44] then she sent two of her maidens to King
[6:46] shudodana
[6:48] with this message
[6:49] [Music]
[6:51] that the king should come to the wood
[6:56] Queen Maya wishes to see him and will
[6:58] await him there
[7:03] the king promptly complied
[7:07] he left the hall where with the help of
[7:10] his counselors he had been administering
[7:13] Justice to the inhabitants of the city
[7:17] foreign
[7:18] ly
[7:21] without arrogance
[7:23] and he asked
[7:26] why did you send for me
[7:28] what do you wish
[7:33] the queen told him of the dream she had
[7:35] had
[7:37] then added
[7:40] my Lord
[7:42] there are brahmanas who are clever at
[7:44] interpreting dreams
[7:47] send for them
[7:50] they will know if the palace has been
[7:52] visited by good or evil
[7:54] and if we should Rejoice or mourn
[7:59] the king agreed
[8:02] and brahmins familiar with the mystery
[8:04] of Dreams were summoned to the Palace
[8:09] when they had heard Maya's story they
[8:12] spoke in this manner
[8:16] a great joy is to be yours O King
[8:20] oh Queen
[8:22] a son will be born to you
[8:26] distinguished by the favor of the Gods
[8:30] if one day he should renounce royalty
[8:34] leave the palace
[8:36] and live the wandering life of a monk
[8:38] [Music]
[8:40] he will deserve marvelous praise
[8:43] he will richly deserve magnificent gifts
[8:48] he will be adored by the worlds
[8:51] for he will give them that which they
[8:53] hunger after
[8:57] oh master
[8:59] oh mistress
[9:02] your son will be a Buddha
[9:11] [Music]
[9:21] months passed
[9:23] then one day
[9:24] the queen knew that the time was
[9:26] approaching for her son to be born
[9:30] they came to a wood where the trees were
[9:32] In Bloom and Maya stepped out and began
[9:35] wandering about aimlessly
[9:39] she was happy
[9:41] and behold she found a rare tree
[9:45] the branches drooping under their burden
[9:47] of blossoms
[9:50] she went up to it
[9:52] gracefully extending her hand
[9:55] she Drew down a branch
[9:59] suddenly she stood very still
[10:03] she smiled
[10:04] the maidens who were near her received a
[10:07] lovely child into their arms
[10:12] at that same moment all that was alive
[10:15] in the world trembled with joy
[10:19] the Earth quivered
[10:21] songs in the pattern of dancing feet
[10:23] echoed in the sky
[10:26] trees of All Seasons burst into flower
[10:29] and ripe fruit hung from the branches
[10:32] [Music]
[10:34] sick were rid of their suffering
[10:37] the hungry were satisfied
[10:39] and wicked were cleansed of all evil
[10:42] [Music]
[10:45] one of Maya's maidens hastened to King
[10:47] shudodana and joyously exclaimed
[10:50] my Lord my Lord a son is born to you a
[10:56] son who will bring great glory to your
[10:57] house
[10:58] [Music]
[11:00] he was speechless but his face was
[11:03] radiant with joy and he knew great
[11:06] happiness
[11:09] presently he summoned all the shakyas
[11:12] and he commanded them to accompany him
[11:15] into the garden where the child had been
[11:17] born
[11:19] they obeyed and with a host of brahmanas
[11:22] in attendance they formed a noble
[11:25] retinue as they Gravely followed the
[11:27] king
[11:27] [Music]
[11:31] he came near the child the king made a
[11:35] deep obeisance and he said
[11:38] do you bow as I bow before the prince
[11:42] to whom I give the name Siddhartha
[11:46] [Music]
[12:05] the great hermeticita whose austerities
[12:08] were pleasing to the gods heard of the
[12:11] birth of him who is to save humankind
[12:13] from the torment of rebirth
[12:18] in his thirst for the true law he came
[12:21] to the Palace of King shudodana and
[12:23] Gravely approached the women's quarters
[12:27] his years and his learning lent him
[12:30] great dignity
[12:33] the king showed him the courtesies that
[12:35] custom prescribed and addressed him in a
[12:38] seemly manner
[12:41] happy indeed him I truly this child of
[12:45] mine will enjoy distinguished favor
[12:47] for the venerable aceta has come
[12:49] purposely to see me
[12:53] command me
[12:55] what must I do
[12:57] I am your disciple your servant
[13:02] The Hermit his eyes shining with a light
[13:06] of Joy Gravely spoke these words
[13:10] this has happened to you o Noble
[13:13] generous and hospitable King because you
[13:17] love Duty because you are ever kind to
[13:20] those who are wise and to those who are
[13:23] full of years
[13:26] this has happened to you because your
[13:29] ancestors though rich in land and rich
[13:32] in gold
[13:34] were above all rich in virtue
[13:39] know the reason for my coming O King and
[13:42] rejoice
[13:42] [Music]
[13:46] in the air I heard a Divine voice
[13:48] speaking and it said
[13:51] a son has been born to the king of the
[13:54] shakyas
[13:55] son who will have the true knowledge
[13:59] I heard these words and I came and my
[14:02] eyes shall now behold the glory of the
[14:04] shakyas
[14:09] overwhelmed with joy the king went to
[14:12] fetch the child
[14:14] taking him from his nurse's breast he
[14:17] showed him to the age deceita
[14:20] The Hermit noticed that the King's son
[14:23] bore the marks of omnipotence
[14:26] his gaze hovered over the child and
[14:29] presently his lashes were wet with tears
[14:34] then he sighed and turned his eyes to
[14:37] the sky
[14:41] the king saw that asita was weeping and
[14:44] he began to fear for his son
[14:47] he questioned the old man
[14:51] you say o venerable Rhone
[14:54] but my son's body differs little from
[14:56] that of a god
[14:58] you say that his birth was a wondrous
[15:01] thing
[15:02] that in the future his glory will be
[15:04] Supreme
[15:07] yet you'll look at him with eyes that
[15:09] are filled with tears
[15:11] is his life then to be a fragile thing
[15:16] was he born only to bring me sorrow
[15:20] must this new Branch wither before it
[15:23] has burst into flower
[15:26] Speak O saintly man speak quickly
[15:30] you know the great love of Father Bears
[15:32] his son
[15:38] be not distressed O King
[15:40] apply the hermit hermit what I have told
[15:43] you is true
[15:46] this child will know great Glory
[15:50] if I weep it is for myself
[15:54] my life draws to a close and he is born
[15:59] he who will destroy the evil of rebirth
[16:03] foreign
[16:04] to those wandering in the forest of
[16:06] existences like Travelers who have lost
[16:09] their way
[16:11] he will point out the road to Salvation
[16:15] therefore do not grieve O King
[16:19] alone is to be pitied who will not hear
[16:22] the voice of your son
[16:25] and that is why I weep
[16:28] I who in spite of my austerities
[16:32] in spite of my meditations
[16:35] will never know his message and his law
[16:40] yes even he is to be pitied who ascends
[16:43] to The loftiest Gardens of the sky
[16:46] [Music]
[16:58] they please shudod first these words of
[17:01] acetas
[17:02] and he pondered them
[17:05] so my son will live and live gloriously
[17:08] he thought
[17:11] but then he became anxious for it had
[17:14] been said that the prince would renounce
[17:16] royalty
[17:17] that he would lead the life of a hermit
[17:20] and did that not mean that at his death
[17:23] she died in his family would cease
[17:28] but his anxiety was short-lived for
[17:31] since the birth of Siddhartha the king
[17:33] could undertake nothing that did not
[17:35] prosper
[17:37] like a great river whose waters are
[17:40] swollen by many tributaries
[17:42] each day new riches poured into his
[17:46] Treasury
[17:48] kingdom was rich in Fertile lands and
[17:52] Sleek fatted cattle grazed in The
[17:54] Meadows
[17:56] women bore their children without
[17:58] suffering
[18:00] men lived at peace with their neighbors
[18:03] and happiness and Tranquility reigned in
[18:05] the land of kapinavastu
[18:10] but the joy that had come to Maya proved
[18:13] too sweet
[18:15] it soon became unbearable
[18:20] the Earth knew her as a mother but seven
[18:22] days
[18:23] then she died and ascended to the sky to
[18:27] be received among the gods
[18:31] Maya had a sister Maha prajapati
[18:35] who in Beauty and virtue was almost her
[18:38] equal
[18:41] the prince was given into Maha
[18:43] prajapati's care
[18:44] as she looked after his wants as
[18:47] tenderly as if he were her own child
[18:50] and like fire fanned by an auspicious
[18:53] wind
[18:54] like the Moon
[18:57] Queen of the stars and the Luminous
[18:59] Skies
[19:00] like the morning sun rising over the
[19:02] mountains in the east
[19:05] Siddhartha grew in strength and stature
[19:20] foreign
[19:29] he did not want his family to die out
[19:32] and he said to himself
[19:36] I will arouse in my son a desire for
[19:39] pleasure
[19:41] then perhaps I shall have grandchildren
[19:44] and they shall prosper
[19:49] so he sent for the prince
[19:52] and he spoke to him in these words
[19:57] my child
[19:58] [Music]
[20:00] you are at an age when it would be well
[20:01] to think of marriage
[20:04] if there is some need that pleases you
[20:07] tell me
[20:10] Siddhartha replied
[20:15] I am not one of those who seek the
[20:17] company of women
[20:20] it is my lot to live in The Silence of
[20:22] the Woods
[20:23] [Music]
[20:25] there through meditation
[20:28] my mind will find peace
[20:33] but does not the Lotus grow and flourish
[20:35] even amid the tangle of swamp flowers
[20:41] have there not been men with wives and
[20:43] sons who found wisdom
[20:46] I shall follow their example
[20:49] [Music]
[20:51] give me seven days to consider father
[20:54] in seven days you shall have my answer
[20:58] [Music]
[21:02] he thought of equalities he would value
[21:04] most highly in a woman
[21:07] then on the seventh day
[21:10] he returned to his father
[21:12] [Music]
[21:15] said he
[21:16] [Music]
[21:18] she whom I shall marry must be a woman
[21:21] of rare Merit
[21:26] she whom I shall marry will have the
[21:28] flower of beauty
[21:30] yet her youth will not make her vain
[21:33] nor will her beauty make her proud
[21:38] she whom I shall marry will have a
[21:40] sister's affection
[21:42] a mother's tenderness for all living
[21:45] creatures
[21:48] she whom I shall marry will be pure in
[21:51] body in speech and in thought
[21:56] father if you know a maid who possesses
[21:58] these qualities
[22:00] you may give her to me in marriage
[22:02] [Music]
[22:06] the king summoned the household priest
[22:09] he enumerated the qualities the prince
[22:12] sought in the woman he would marry then
[22:15] said
[22:16] go Brahman visit all the houses of
[22:20] kapilavastu
[22:22] observe the young girls and question
[22:24] them
[22:26] and if you find one to possess the
[22:28] necessary qualities bring her to the
[22:31] prince even though she be of the lowest
[22:33] caste
[22:35] for it is not rank nor riches my son
[22:38] seeks
[22:39] but virtue
[22:42] [Music]
[22:44] priests scour the city of kapilavastu
[22:48] he entered the houses
[22:50] he saw the young girls
[22:53] he cleverly questioned them
[22:55] but not one could he find worthy of
[22:58] Prince Siddhartha
[23:01] finally he came to the home of dandapani
[23:04] who was of the shakya family
[23:08] dandapani had a daughter named gopa
[23:12] at the very sight of her the priest's
[23:15] heart rejoiced for she was beautiful and
[23:18] full of grace
[23:21] he spoke a few words to her
[23:24] and he doubted no longer
[23:29] priest returned to King shudodana
[23:34] my Lord he exclaimed
[23:37] I have found a maid worthy of your son
[23:42] where did you find her ask the king
[23:46] she is the daughter of the shakia
[23:48] dandapani the Brahman replied
[23:53] though he had great confidence in his
[23:55] household priest judodina hesitated to
[23:57] summon gopa and dandapani
[24:01] even the wisest men can make mistakes he
[24:03] thought
[24:05] the brahmana may be exaggerating her
[24:07] Perfections
[24:09] I must put the daughter of dandapani to
[24:11] a further test and my son himself shall
[24:14] judge her
[24:17] he had many jewels made out of gold and
[24:20] silver
[24:21] and by Royal command a Herald was sent
[24:24] through the streets of kapinavastu
[24:26] crying
[24:29] on the seventh day from this day
[24:33] Prince siddarta son of King shudodana
[24:36] will present gifts to the young girls of
[24:38] the city
[24:40] so may all the young girls appear at the
[24:43] palace on the seventh day
[24:45] [Music]
[24:51] on the day announced the prince sat on a
[24:53] throne in the Great Hall of the palace
[24:56] all the young girls of the city were
[24:58] present and he filed before him
[25:02] foreign
[25:03] to each one he presented a jewel
[25:07] but as they approached the throne his
[25:10] striking Beauty so intimidated them that
[25:12] they lowered their gaze or turned their
[25:15] heads away
[25:15] [Music]
[25:18] gopan was the last one to appear
[25:22] she Advanced fearlessly without even
[25:25] blinking her eyes
[25:27] but the prince had not a single June
[25:30] left
[25:31] [Music]
[25:33] gopa smiled and said to him
[25:35] Prince
[25:38] in what way have I offended you
[25:41] [Music]
[25:43] you have not offended me
[25:45] replied Siddhartha
[25:47] then why do you treat me with disdain
[25:52] I do not treat you with disdain he
[25:54] replied
[25:56] you are the last one and I have no Jewel
[25:59] to give you
[26:02] but suddenly he remembered that on his
[26:05] finger he was wearing a ring of great
[26:07] value
[26:09] he took it off and handed it to the
[26:11] young girl
[26:13] she would not take the ring
[26:16] she said
[26:18] Prince must I accept this ring from you
[26:21] [Music]
[26:23] it was mine replied The Prince and you
[26:26] must accept it
[26:29] no
[26:30] said she I would not deprive you of your
[26:33] jewels
[26:35] it is for me rather to give you a jewel
[26:39] and she left
[26:45] when the king heard of this incident he
[26:48] was elated
[26:51] gopa alone could face my son he thought
[26:56] she alone is worthy of him
[26:59] gopa
[27:00] who would not accept the ring that you
[27:02] took from your finger
[27:04] gopa oh my son
[27:07] will be your fairest Jewel
[27:11] foreign
[27:14] [Music]
[27:24] lived happily with his wife the princess
[27:27] [Music]
[27:29] and the King whose love for his son now
[27:31] verged on adoration
[27:33] took infinite care to spare him the
[27:35] sight of anything that might distress
[27:37] him
[27:40] he built three magnificent palaces for
[27:43] him
[27:44] one for the winter
[27:47] one for the summer
[27:49] and the third for the rainy season
[27:53] and these he was forbidden ever to leave
[27:56] to wander over the broad face of the
[27:59] Earth
[28:03] in his palaces
[28:05] white as Autumn clouds
[28:08] bright is the celestial Chariots of the
[28:10] Gods and Goddesses
[28:13] Prince drained the cup of pleasure
[28:15] [Music]
[28:17] he led a life of voluptuous ease
[28:21] and he spent lying with hours listening
[28:23] to music played by the princess and her
[28:26] maidens
[28:29] then beautiful gopa bore the Prince's
[28:32] son and he was given the name rahula
[28:35] [Music]
[28:38] King shunodana was happy to see his
[28:40] family prosper
[28:41] [Music]
[28:43] and he was as proud of the birth of his
[28:45] grandson as he had been of the birth of
[28:47] his son
[28:50] he continued in the path of virtue
[28:53] he lived almost like a hermit
[28:56] and his actions were saintly
[29:00] and he kept urging on his beloved Son to
[29:03] new Pleasures so great was his fear to
[29:06] see him leave the palace and the City
[29:09] and seek the austere Refuge of the Holy
[29:12] forests
[29:18] one day someone spoke in the presence of
[29:22] The Prince and told how the grass in the
[29:25] woods had become a tender green and the
[29:28] birds and the trees were singing of the
[29:30] spring
[29:31] and how in the ponds The Great lotuses
[29:35] were unfolding
[29:38] nature had broken the chains that winter
[29:40] had forged and around the city
[29:44] those Gardens so dear to Young maidens
[29:47] were now gayly carpeted with flowers
[29:53] then like an elephant too long confined
[29:56] in his stable
[29:58] Prince had an irresistible desire to
[30:01] leave the palace
[30:05] the king learned of his son's desire and
[30:08] he knew no way to oppose it
[30:11] but he thought
[30:14] Siddhartha must seem nothing that will
[30:16] trouble the serenity of his soul
[30:19] he must never suspect the evil there is
[30:21] in the world
[30:23] I shall order the road cleared of
[30:26] beggars
[30:27] of those who are sick and infirm and of
[30:30] all who suffer
[30:32] [Music]
[30:34] the city was decorated with garlands and
[30:37] streamers
[30:39] a magnificent Chariot was prepared and
[30:42] the cripples the Aged and the Beggars
[30:44] were ordered off the streets where the
[30:46] prince would pass
[30:51] when the time came
[30:53] sent for his son
[30:55] and there were tears in his eyes as he
[30:58] kissed him on the brow
[31:00] and then he said to him go
[31:04] [Music]
[31:05] and with that word he gave him
[31:08] permission to leave the palace
[31:10] though his heart spoke differently
[31:12] [Music]
[31:17] the princess Chariot was made of gold
[31:20] foreign
[31:21] by four horses capresened in gold and
[31:25] the charioteer held gold Reigns in his
[31:27] hands
[31:30] the rich The Young and the Beautiful
[31:32] were allowed on the streets he drove
[31:34] through and they stopped to watch him as
[31:36] he went by
[31:39] some praised him for the kindness of his
[31:41] glance
[31:42] others extolled his dignified bearing
[31:46] still others exalted the beauty of his
[31:49] features
[31:50] while many glorified his exuberant
[31:53] strength
[31:54] and he at the sight of the city splendor
[31:59] at the sight of the wealth of the men
[32:01] and the beauty of the women
[32:03] felt a new Joy pour into his soul
[32:09] but the gods were jealous of the
[32:11] celestial Felicity and joined by the
[32:14] city of the Earth
[32:15] [Music]
[32:17] they made an old man
[32:19] and in order to troubles siddhartha's
[32:22] mind
[32:23] they set him down on the road the prince
[32:26] was traveling
[32:28] the man was leaning on a staff
[32:32] he was worn out and decrepit
[32:36] his veins stood out on his body
[32:39] teeth chattered and his skin was a maze
[32:42] of black wrinkles
[32:46] a few dirty gray hairs hung from his
[32:48] scalp
[32:50] his eyelids had no lashes and were red
[32:52] rimmed his head and limbs were palsied
[32:59] Prince saw this being so different from
[33:02] the men around him
[33:03] foreign
[33:05] with sorrowful eyes and he asked the
[33:08] charioter
[33:12] what is this man with gray hair and body
[33:14] so bent
[33:17] he clings to his staff with scrawny
[33:19] hands
[33:22] his eyes are dull
[33:24] and his limbs falter
[33:26] [Music]
[33:27] see a monster
[33:30] has nature made him thus
[33:33] or as a chance
[33:35] foreign
[33:38] should not have answered
[33:40] the gods confused his mind and without
[33:43] understanding his mistake he said
[33:49] that which Mars Beauty
[33:52] which ruins vigor
[33:54] which causes sorrow and kills pleasure
[33:58] that which weakens the memory and
[34:01] destroys the senses
[34:03] his old age
[34:07] it has ceased this man and broken him
[34:11] he too was once a Child Nursing at his
[34:15] mother's breast
[34:17] he too once crawled upon the floor
[34:20] [Music]
[34:21] he grew he was young
[34:24] he had strength and beauty
[34:27] then he reached the Twilight of his
[34:29] years
[34:30] and now you see him
[34:33] the ruin that is old age
[34:36] [Music]
[34:39] the prince was deeply moved
[34:43] he asked
[34:45] will that be my fate also
[34:50] the charioteer replied
[34:54] my Lord
[34:56] youth will also leave you someday
[35:00] to you too will come Troublesome old age
[35:05] time stops our strength and steals our
[35:08] Beauty
[35:10] [Music]
[35:12] Prince shuddered like a bull at the
[35:14] sound of thunder
[35:16] he uttered a deep sigh and shook his
[35:19] head
[35:19] [Music]
[35:20] his eyes wandered from The Wretched Man
[35:23] to the Happy crowds and he spoke these
[35:26] solemn words
[35:29] so old age destroys memory and beauty
[35:33] and strength in man
[35:36] and yet the world is not frantic with
[35:38] Terror
[35:39] turn your horses around oh Chariot here
[35:42] let us return to our homes
[35:46] how can I Delight in gardens and flowers
[35:48] when my eyes can only see old age
[35:52] my mind can only think of old age
[35:54] [Music]
[35:58] the prince returned to his Palace
[36:01] nowhere could he find peace
[36:05] he wandered through the Halls murmuring
[36:09] old age oh old age
[36:13] and in his heart there was no longer any
[36:15] Joy
[36:19] he decided nevertheless to ride once
[36:22] more through the city
[36:26] but the gods made a man Afflicted with a
[36:29] loathsome disease
[36:31] and they set him down on the road
[36:33] Siddhartha had taken
[36:37] Siddhartha saw the sick man
[36:40] he stared at him
[36:43] and he asked the charioter
[36:47] what is this man
[36:48] with a swollen punch
[36:52] his emaciated arms hang limp
[36:56] he's definitely pale
[36:58] and pitiful cries escape from his lips
[37:03] he gasps for breath
[37:05] see he staggers and jostles the
[37:08] bystanders
[37:09] he's falling
[37:12] a charioteer charioteer what is this man
[37:18] charioteer answered
[37:21] my Lord
[37:23] this man knows the torment of sickness
[37:27] free has the king's evil
[37:30] his weakness itself
[37:34] yet he too was once healthy and strong
[37:39] the prince looked at the man was pity
[37:43] and he asked again
[37:46] is this Affliction peculiar to this man
[37:50] or are all creatures threatened with
[37:52] sickness
[37:56] the charioteer answered
[37:59] we too may be visited with a similar
[38:02] Affliction of Prince
[38:05] sickness weighs heavily upon the world
[38:10] when he heard this painful truth
[38:14] Prince began to tremble like a moon beam
[38:16] reflected in the waves of the sea
[38:20] and he uttered these words of bitterness
[38:22] and pity
[38:26] men see suffering in sickness
[38:29] yet they never lose their
[38:31] self-confidence
[38:33] oh how great must be their knowledge
[38:36] they are constantly threatened with
[38:39] sickness and they can still laugh and be
[38:41] merry
[38:43] turn your horses around charioteer our
[38:46] pleasure trip has ended
[38:50] Let Us return to the Palace
[38:53] I have learned to fear sickness
[38:55] [Music]
[38:57] my soul shuns pleasure and seems to
[39:00] close up like a flower deprived of light
[39:07] wrapped in his painful thoughts he
[39:10] returned to the Palace
[39:14] King Shadow did not noticed his son's
[39:17] somber mood
[39:18] he asked why the prince no longer went
[39:21] out driving and the charioteer told him
[39:23] what had happened
[39:27] the king grieved
[39:31] he already saw himself forsaken by the
[39:34] child he adored
[39:35] foreign
[39:37] he lost his usual composure and flew
[39:41] into a rage at the man whose Duty it was
[39:44] to see that the streets were clear
[39:47] he punished him
[39:51] but so strong was his habit of being
[39:53] indulgent that the punishment was light
[39:56] and the man was astonished at being thus
[39:59] upgraded for he had seen neither the old
[40:02] man nor the sick man
[40:11] King was more anxious now than ever
[40:13] before to keep his son from leaving the
[40:15] palace
[40:18] he provided him with rare pleasures
[40:22] but nothing it seemed could arouse the
[40:24] dark Death
[40:26] and the King thought
[40:28] I shall let him go out once more
[40:31] perhaps he will recover the joy he has
[40:34] lost
[40:38] he gave strict orders to have all
[40:40] cripples and all who were ill or aged
[40:42] driven out of the city
[40:46] he even changed the prince's charioteer
[40:49] and he felt certain that this time there
[40:51] would be nothing to troubles the darkest
[40:53] soul
[40:57] but the jealous gods made a corpse
[41:01] four men carried it
[41:03] and others followed behind weeping
[41:07] and the corpse as well as the men who
[41:10] carried it and the men who were weeping
[41:13] was visible only to The Prince and to
[41:16] the charioteer
[41:19] and the King's son asked
[41:22] what is he that is being carried by four
[41:25] Men followed by those others wearing
[41:28] dark clothes and weeping
[41:32] the charioteer should have held his
[41:34] peace but it was the will of the gods
[41:36] that he replied
[41:40] my Lord he has neither intelligence nor
[41:44] feeling nor breath
[41:47] he sleeps without consciousness
[41:51] like grass or a piece of wood
[41:55] pleasure and suffering are meaningless
[41:57] to him now
[41:59] and friend an enemy alike have deserted
[42:02] him
[42:04] the prince was troubled
[42:08] he sent
[42:10] a condition peculiar to this man
[42:14] or does this same end await All
[42:16] Creatures
[42:18] and the charioteer answered
[42:20] [Music]
[42:22] this same end awaits All Creatures
[42:26] whether if humble or of noble birth
[42:30] to every being who lives in this world
[42:33] death comes inevitably
[42:39] then Prince antarcta knew what death was
[42:45] spite of his fortitude he shuddered
[42:49] he had to lean against the Chariot and
[42:51] his words were full of distress
[42:56] so to this does destiny lead All
[42:58] Creatures
[42:59] and yet
[43:01] without fear in his heart man amuses
[43:04] himself in a thousand different ways
[43:08] death is about
[43:10] and he takes to the world's high roads
[43:12] with a song on his lips
[43:13] [Music]
[43:15] oh I begin to think that man's Soul has
[43:18] become hardened
[43:20] turn your horses around charioteer this
[43:23] is no time to wander through the flower
[43:25] gardens
[43:27] how can a sensible man
[43:30] a man who knows what death is
[43:32] seek pleasure in the hour of anguish
[43:39] a charioteer kept on driving toward the
[43:41] garden
[43:42] where the king had ordered him to take
[43:44] his son
[43:47] there at shouldodina's command
[43:50] udayan who was the son of the household
[43:53] priest and siddhartha's friend since
[43:55] childhood
[43:57] had assembled many beautiful maidens
[44:00] skilled in the art of dancing and of
[44:03] song
[44:04] and skillful also
[44:07] in The Game of Love
[44:10] [Music]
[44:15] foreign
[44:20] The Chariot entered the wood
[44:23] the young trees were in bloom
[44:26] Birds fluttered about joyously as though
[44:29] Intoxicated by the light and atmosphere
[44:33] and on the surface of the pools
[44:36] the lotuses had cut their petals to
[44:38] drink in the cool air
[44:39] [Music]
[44:42] Siddhartha went unwillingly with a young
[44:46] hermit still new to his vows who fears
[44:49] Temptation and is taken to some
[44:51] Celestial Palace
[44:53] where lovely of cyruses or want to dance
[44:59] filled with curiosity
[45:02] the maidens Rose and came forward as
[45:04] though to greet a betrothed
[45:08] Their Eyes Were bright with admiration
[45:12] and the hands they extended were like
[45:14] flowers
[45:17] Prince was not smiling
[45:21] he was unhappy
[45:23] for he was thinking on death
[45:27] he thought
[45:28] they do not know these maidens that
[45:32] youth is fleeting
[45:34] and that old age will come and strip
[45:36] them of their beauty
[45:38] they are blind to the Menace that is
[45:41] sickness but it is already Master of the
[45:44] world
[45:45] [Music]
[45:46] they know nothing of death and that is
[45:49] why they can laugh that is why they can
[45:52] play
[45:55] I have seen old age I have seen sickness
[46:00] I am certain of death
[46:03] nothing now can give me peace of mind
[46:06] [Music]
[46:14] the sun was setting
[46:17] the maidens had ceased their laughter
[46:21] the prince had no eyes for their
[46:23] garlands and their jewels
[46:27] they felt their charms were of no avail
[46:30] and slowly they took the road back to
[46:32] the city
[46:38] the prince returned to the Palace
[46:42] King shudod and I heard from udayan that
[46:45] his son was shunning all pleasure
[46:47] and that night
[46:50] he found no sleep
[46:56] [Music]
[47:01] siddarta could no longer find peace
[47:04] he strolled through the halls of his
[47:06] Palace like a lion stung by some poison
[47:09] dart
[47:12] was unhappy
[47:14] [Music]
[47:15] one day
[47:17] there came to him a great longing for
[47:19] the Open Fields and the sight of Green
[47:21] Meadows
[47:25] he left the palace
[47:28] strolled aimlessly through the country
[47:31] he pondered the misery of mankind
[47:37] he knew no longer Joy or grief doubt or
[47:41] weariness desire or love
[47:44] hatred or scorn
[47:49] suddenly he saw a man approaching who
[47:52] looked like a beggar
[47:54] and who was visible to him alone
[47:57] [Music]
[47:58] tell me who are you
[48:01] the prince asked him
[48:05] hero said the Monk
[48:08] through fear of birth and death I became
[48:11] an itinerant Monk
[48:14] I seek Deliverance
[48:18] I think not as other men
[48:21] I shun pleasures
[48:24] I know nothing of passion
[48:27] I look for solitude
[48:30] sometimes I live at the foot of a tree
[48:34] sometimes I live in the lonely mountains
[48:38] or sometimes in the forest
[48:40] [Music]
[48:42] I own nothing
[48:45] I expect nothing
[48:48] I wander about living on charity and
[48:52] seeking only the highest good
[48:55] [Music]
[48:59] then he ascended into the sky and
[49:01] disappeared
[49:02] [Music]
[49:03] a God had taken the form of a monk in
[49:07] order to arouse the prince
[49:10] [Music]
[49:12] Siddhartha was happy
[49:15] he saw where his duty lay
[49:18] he decided to leave the palace and
[49:20] become a monk
[49:22] he went to the king
[49:25] bowed and sent to him
[49:28] King
[49:30] Grant the request I have to make
[49:33] do not oppose it for I am determined
[49:37] I would leave the palace
[49:40] I would walk in the path of Deliverance
[49:45] heart father
[49:49] King was deeply moved
[49:52] with tears in his voice he said to his
[49:55] son
[49:57] son
[49:59] give up this idea
[50:02] you're still too young to consider a
[50:04] religious calling
[50:06] our thoughts in the springtime of Life
[50:08] are Wayward and changeable
[50:10] [Music]
[50:12] besides it is a grave mistake to perform
[50:15] austere practices in our youth
[50:19] our senses are eager for new pleasures
[50:23] our firmest resolutions are forgotten
[50:26] when we learn the cost and effort
[50:30] first known the joys of Youth
[50:32] then those of later years
[50:35] before you retake yourself to the woods
[50:37] and become a hermit
[50:42] Prince answered
[50:43] [Music]
[50:45] promise me four things O Father and I
[50:48] shall not leave your house and repair to
[50:50] the woods
[50:53] what are they
[50:54] ask the king
[50:58] promise me that my life will not end in
[51:00] death
[51:02] sickness will not impair my health
[51:05] that age will not follow my youth
[51:08] that Misfortune will not destroy my
[51:11] prosperity
[51:11] [Music]
[51:15] you are asking too much
[51:17] implied the king
[51:18] [Music]
[51:20] give up this idea
[51:22] [Music]
[51:23] it is not well to act on a foolish
[51:25] impulse
[51:29] solemn is meru Mountain the prince said
[51:32] to his father
[51:33] [Music]
[51:36] promise me these four things
[51:39] do not hold me back O Father
[51:42] when someone is trying to escape from a
[51:45] burning house we should not hinder him
[51:48] the day comes inevitably when we must
[51:51] leave this world
[51:52] [Music]
[51:54] but what Merit is there in a forced
[51:56] separation
[51:58] a voluntary separation is far better
[52:04] with tears in his eyes he returned to
[52:07] the Palace
[52:08] [Music]
[52:11] in the Great Hall gopa's companions were
[52:13] laughing and singing
[52:15] he paid new heed to them
[52:20] Knight came on and they were silent
[52:24] they fell asleep
[52:27] Prince looked at them
[52:30] gone was their studded Grace
[52:33] gone the sparkle of their eyes
[52:36] their hair was disheveled
[52:38] their mouths gaped
[52:41] their breasts were crushed and their
[52:43] arms and legs were stiffly outstretched
[52:46] or clumsily Twisted under them
[52:50] and the prince cried
[52:54] dead they are dead I am standing in a
[52:58] graveyard
[52:59] foreign
[53:00] left
[53:03] and made his way toward the Royal
[53:04] Stables
[53:13] he called his Equity Fleet chandiga
[53:18] bring me my horse contika at Once he
[53:20] said
[53:22] I would be off to find eternal beatitude
[53:27] chandika knew the king's orders but he
[53:30] felt some Superior power
[53:32] urging him to disobey
[53:34] thank you
[53:36] he went to fetch the horse
[53:40] was a magnificent animal
[53:45] he was strong and supple
[53:48] Siddhartha stroked him quietly then said
[53:51] to him in a gentle voice
[53:55] many times a noble Beast my father rode
[53:59] you into battle and defeated his
[54:01] powerful enemies
[54:02] [Music]
[54:04] today I go forth to seek Supreme
[54:07] beatitude
[54:10] lend me your help ocontica
[54:13] lend me your strength and your speed
[54:17] the world salvation and your own is at
[54:19] stake
[54:25] the prince had spoken to contika as he
[54:27] would have to a friend
[54:30] he now eagerly climbed into the saddle
[54:33] and he looked like the sun is dried an
[54:35] Autumn cloud
[54:38] the horse was careful to make no noise
[54:40] for the night was clear
[54:45] no one in the palace or in kapilavastu
[54:47] was awakened
[54:50] heavy iron bars protected the gates of
[54:52] the city
[54:54] an elephant could have raised them only
[54:56] with great difficulty
[54:59] but
[55:00] to allow the prince to pass
[55:02] the gates opened silently
[55:05] of their own accord
[55:10] leaving his father
[55:12] his son and his people
[55:15] Siddhartha went forth from the city
[55:20] he felt no regret and in a steady voice
[55:23] he cried
[55:26] until I have seen the end of life and of
[55:28] death
[55:30] I shall not return to the city of kapila
[55:34] [Music]
[55:45] kantika bravely carried him a great
[55:47] distance
[55:50] when the Sun finally peered between the
[55:53] eyelids of night
[55:54] [Music]
[55:55] the most noble of men saw that he was
[55:57] near a wood
[55:59] where dwelt many Pious Hermits
[56:01] [Music]
[56:03] deer were asleep under the trees
[56:07] and birds fluttered about fearlessly
[56:12] Siddhartha felt rested
[56:14] and he thought he need go no further
[56:20] he dismounted and gently stroked his
[56:22] horse
[56:25] there was happiness in his glance and in
[56:28] his voice as he said to chandika
[56:33] truly
[56:34] a horse has the strength and swiftness
[56:36] of a God
[56:38] and you dear friend
[56:41] by bearing me company
[56:44] prove to me how great is your affection
[56:46] and your courage
[56:50] take the horse now and return to the
[56:52] city
[56:54] I have found the forest I was seeking
[56:58] foreign
[57:03] [Music]
[57:05] had entered the Hermitage where holy
[57:08] aratakalama taught the doctrine of
[57:10] renunciation
[57:12] to a great number of disciples
[57:16] whenever he appeared
[57:18] they all admired him
[57:21] wherever he went
[57:23] they're shown a Marvelous Light
[57:28] the monks listened with joy when he
[57:30] spoke
[57:30] for his voice was sweet and powerful and
[57:34] he was persuasive
[57:38] one day
[57:40] aratakalama said to him
[57:44] you understand the law as well as I
[57:46] understand it
[57:49] all that I know you know
[57:53] Hereafter if you wish we will share the
[57:56] work
[57:57] we will both teach the disciples
[58:03] the hero asked himself
[58:04] [Music]
[58:07] is the law that Arata teaches the true
[58:09] love
[58:12] does it lead to Deliverance
[58:15] he thought
[58:16] aratan his disciples lead lives of great
[58:19] austerity
[58:22] they refuse food prepared by man
[58:27] they will only eat fruit leaves and
[58:29] Roots they will drink only water
[58:34] when they sleep it is under a canopy of
[58:36] branches
[58:38] foreign
[58:40] scorches them
[58:43] they expose their bodies to the bitter
[58:45] winds
[58:47] they bruise their feet and their knees
[58:50] on the stones of the highway
[58:53] to them
[58:54] virtue comes only with suffering
[58:58] and they think they are happy for they
[59:00] believe that by practicing perfect
[59:02] austerity
[59:04] they will earn the right to ascend to
[59:06] the sky
[59:09] yes they will Ascend to the sky but the
[59:12] human race will continue to suffer old
[59:14] age and death
[59:16] to lead a life of austerity and be
[59:19] indifferent to the constant evil of
[59:21] birth and death is simply to add
[59:23] suffering to suffering
[59:27] thus did he Ponder in the Hermitage of
[59:30] aratakalama
[59:33] he saw the vanity of the doctrine that
[59:35] the master was teaching and he said to
[59:38] him
[59:40] I will not teach your doctor in Arata
[59:44] who knows it will not find Deliverance
[59:47] I shall leave your Hermitage and I shall
[59:50] seek the rule to which we must submit
[59:52] before we can have done with suffering
[1:00:07] the clear waters of the naranjana flowed
[1:00:10] through a rich and fertile land
[1:00:14] little villages drowsed in the shade of
[1:00:16] magnificent trees
[1:00:19] and Great Meadows stretched away into
[1:00:21] the distance
[1:00:24] the hero thought
[1:00:27] how pleasant it is here
[1:00:30] what an inviting spot in which to
[1:00:32] meditate
[1:00:34] perhaps here I shall find the path to
[1:00:36] wisdom
[1:00:38] here I shall dwell
[1:00:44] for six years the hero remained on the
[1:00:47] banks of the river and meditated
[1:00:52] he never sought Shelter From The Wind
[1:00:54] from the Sun or from the rain
[1:00:58] he allowed the gadflies the mosquitoes
[1:01:01] and the serpents to sting him
[1:01:04] he was oblivious to the boys and girls
[1:01:07] the Shepherds and woodcutters who jeered
[1:01:10] at him as they passed by
[1:01:12] and who sometimes threw dust or mutted
[1:01:14] him
[1:01:17] he hardly ate
[1:01:20] a fruit and a few grains of rice or of
[1:01:23] Sesame composed as Fair
[1:01:27] he became very thin
[1:01:30] his bones showed prominently
[1:01:34] but under his gaunt forehead
[1:01:37] his dilated eyes Shone like stars
[1:01:44] and yet true knowledge did not come to
[1:01:46] him
[1:01:48] he felt he was becoming very weak
[1:01:50] and he realized that if he wasted away
[1:01:54] he would never reach the goalie it set
[1:01:56] for himself
[1:01:58] so he decided to take more nourishment
[1:02:04] there was a village called uruvilva near
[1:02:07] the spot where Siddhartha spent long
[1:02:09] hours in meditation
[1:02:13] the head man of this Village had ten
[1:02:15] daughters
[1:02:17] they revered the hero
[1:02:19] and they brought him grain and fruit by
[1:02:22] way of alms
[1:02:25] he rarely touched these gifts
[1:02:29] but one day the girls noticed that he
[1:02:31] had eaten all they had offered him
[1:02:36] the next day they came with a large dish
[1:02:38] full of boiled rice and he emptied that
[1:02:43] the following day
[1:02:45] each one brought a different delicacy
[1:02:48] and the hero ate them all
[1:02:52] he began to gain flesh
[1:02:55] and presently he started going to the
[1:02:58] Village to bake his food
[1:03:01] the inhabitants abide with one another
[1:03:04] in giving him alms
[1:03:07] and before long
[1:03:09] he had regained his strength and his
[1:03:12] Beauty
[1:03:24] when night came on sardartha fell asleep
[1:03:28] and he had five dreams
[1:03:32] first he saw himself lying in a large
[1:03:34] bed that was the whole Earth
[1:03:38] under his head there was a cushion which
[1:03:40] was the Himalaya
[1:03:43] his right hand rested on the western sea
[1:03:47] his left hand on the Eastern Sea
[1:03:51] and his feet touched the Southern Sea
[1:03:55] then he saw Reed coming out of his navel
[1:04:00] and the Reed grew so fast that it soon
[1:04:02] reached the sky
[1:04:06] then he saw worms crawling up his legs
[1:04:09] and completely covering them
[1:04:14] then he saw birds flying toward him from
[1:04:16] all points of the horizon
[1:04:19] and when the birds were near his head
[1:04:21] they seemed to be of gold
[1:04:25] finally
[1:04:27] he saw himself at the foot of a mountain
[1:04:29] of Filth and excrement
[1:04:31] [Music]
[1:04:33] he climbed the mountain
[1:04:36] he reached the summit
[1:04:38] he descended
[1:04:40] and neither the filth nor the excrement
[1:04:42] had defiled him
[1:04:45] [Music]
[1:04:48] he awoke
[1:04:50] and from these dreams he knew that the
[1:04:52] day had come
[1:04:53] when having attained Supreme knowledge
[1:04:56] he would become a Buddha
[1:05:00] [Music]
[1:05:01] he rose and set out for the village of
[1:05:03] uruvilova to beg
[1:05:07] sunjata the most devout of the 10 young
[1:05:11] girls who had been bringing him food
[1:05:13] had just finished milking eight
[1:05:15] wonderful cows that she owned
[1:05:18] the milk they gave was rich oily and of
[1:05:22] a delicate savor
[1:05:25] she added honey and rice flour to it
[1:05:29] then set the mixture to boil in a new
[1:05:31] pot on a new stove
[1:05:37] huge bubbles began to form and kept
[1:05:39] floating off to the right without the
[1:05:41] liquid rising or spilling a single drop
[1:05:45] the stove did not even smoke
[1:05:51] sujata was astonished and she sent to
[1:05:54] porna her servant
[1:05:57] porna the gods are favoring us today
[1:06:01] go and see if the holy man is
[1:06:03] approaching the house
[1:06:06] Purna from the doorstep saw the hero
[1:06:09] walking towards sujata's house
[1:06:13] he was defusing a brilliant light
[1:06:16] a golden light
[1:06:20] Corner was dazzled
[1:06:22] she ran back to her mistress
[1:06:26] he is humming he's coming
[1:06:31] this will be blinded by his splendor
[1:06:33] [Music]
[1:06:35] let him come oh let him come cried
[1:06:38] sujata
[1:06:40] it is for him that I have prepared this
[1:06:42] wonderful milk
[1:06:43] [Music]
[1:06:46] and she awaited the hero
[1:06:48] [Music]
[1:06:55] lighted up by his presence
[1:06:57] sunjata
[1:07:00] to do him honor
[1:07:01] bowed seven times
[1:07:05] he sat down
[1:07:08] sujatha kneeled and bathed his feet in
[1:07:10] sweet scented water then she offered him
[1:07:13] the Golden Bowl full of milk mixed with
[1:07:16] rice flour and honey
[1:07:20] he thought
[1:07:22] Buddhas of all that Ascend and their
[1:07:25] last meal served to them in a Golden
[1:07:26] Bowl
[1:07:28] before attaining Supreme knowledge
[1:07:31] [Music]
[1:07:32] since sujata offers me this milk and
[1:07:35] honey in a Golden Bowl
[1:07:38] the time has come for me to be a Buddha
[1:07:46] hero sauntered along the banks of the
[1:07:48] river
[1:07:51] Knight slowly descended
[1:07:54] the flowers wearily close their petals
[1:07:58] sweet fragrance Rose from the fields and
[1:08:01] Gardens
[1:08:03] Birds timidly rehearse their even songs
[1:08:10] is then that the hero walked toward the
[1:08:12] tree of knowledge
[1:08:16] the road was sprinkled with gold dust
[1:08:21] rare Palms covered with precious stones
[1:08:24] lined the way
[1:08:28] he skirted the edge of a pool whose
[1:08:30] blessed Waters exhaled an intoxicating
[1:08:32] perfume
[1:08:36] white yellow blue and red lotuses spread
[1:08:40] their massive petals over the surface
[1:08:42] and the air rang with the clear songs of
[1:08:45] the swans
[1:08:50] he approached the tree
[1:08:55] the hero went to the east of it
[1:08:57] and bowed seven times
[1:09:01] he threw the handfuls of grass on the
[1:09:03] ground
[1:09:05] and suddenly
[1:09:06] a great seat appeared
[1:09:12] soft grass covered it like a carpet
[1:09:17] the hero sat down
[1:09:20] his head and shoulders erect
[1:09:23] his face turned to the east
[1:09:27] then he said in a solemn voice
[1:09:31] even if my skin should parch
[1:09:34] even if my hands should wither
[1:09:38] even if my bones should crumble into
[1:09:41] dust
[1:09:43] till I have attained Supreme knowledge
[1:09:47] I shall not move from this seat
[1:09:50] [Music]
[1:09:52] and he crossed his legs
[1:10:00] [Music]
[1:10:02] the light emanating from the hero's body
[1:10:05] reached even to those Realms where Mara
[1:10:08] the evil one Reigns Supreme
[1:10:13] [Music]
[1:10:14] it dazzled Mara
[1:10:16] and he seemed to hear a voice saying
[1:10:20] the hero who is renounced royalty is now
[1:10:24] seated under the tree of knowledge
[1:10:27] [Music]
[1:10:28] he is concentrating his mind
[1:10:32] he is making the Supreme effort
[1:10:35] soon he will bring to All Creatures the
[1:10:38] help which they need
[1:10:43] cause of him
[1:10:44] the city of the Gods will be crowded
[1:10:49] because of him
[1:10:52] city of the evil one
[1:10:54] will be deserted
[1:10:57] and you Mara
[1:10:59] a commander without an army
[1:11:02] king without subjects
[1:11:05] will not know where to take refuge
[1:11:10] Mara was filled with apprehension
[1:11:15] he tried to sleep
[1:11:17] but his Slumber was disturbed by
[1:11:19] terrible dreams
[1:11:22] he awoke and summoned his servants and
[1:11:24] his soldiers
[1:11:27] when they saw him
[1:11:29] they became alarmed and sartavaha one of
[1:11:32] his sons said to him
[1:11:35] father
[1:11:37] you look pale and unhappy
[1:11:40] your heart beats fast and your limbs
[1:11:42] tremble
[1:11:44] what have you heard what have you seen
[1:11:47] speak
[1:11:51] son replied Mara
[1:11:54] the days of my pride are over
[1:11:58] I Heard a Voice crying in the light
[1:12:01] and it told me that the son of the
[1:12:03] sakias was seated under the tree of
[1:12:05] knowledge
[1:12:08] and I had horrible dreams
[1:12:11] a black cloud of dust settled over my
[1:12:14] Palace
[1:12:15] you had all deserted me
[1:12:19] I wanted to fight my enemy but I could
[1:12:22] not draw my sword from the Scabbard
[1:12:25] all my subjects fled in horror
[1:12:29] impenetrable Darkness closed in upon me
[1:12:33] and I heard my Palace crashing to the
[1:12:36] ground
[1:12:36] [Music]
[1:12:39] sartavaha said
[1:12:42] father it is disheartening to lose a
[1:12:44] battle
[1:12:45] [Music]
[1:12:46] if you have seen these Omens
[1:12:49] find your time
[1:12:51] and do not run the chance of being
[1:12:53] ingloriously defeated
[1:12:57] but Mara paid no heed
[1:13:00] he ordered the Army to advance it once
[1:13:08] I mean was a fear of a fear sight
[1:13:12] bristled with Pikes with arrows and with
[1:13:14] swords
[1:13:17] many carried enormous battle axes and
[1:13:20] heavy clubs
[1:13:22] the soldiers were black blue yellow red
[1:13:26] and their faces were terrifying
[1:13:30] their eyes were cruel Flames their
[1:13:33] mouths spewed blood
[1:13:36] some had the ears of a goat
[1:13:39] others the ears of a pig or of an
[1:13:41] elephant
[1:13:44] there were many with two four and five
[1:13:47] heads
[1:13:49] and others with 10 12 and 20 arms
[1:13:54] in place of ornaments
[1:13:57] they wore jaw bones
[1:13:59] Falls and withered human fingers
[1:14:03] shaking their hairy heads they Advanced
[1:14:07] with Hideous laughter
[1:14:09] and Savage cries
[1:14:14] before attacking the hero
[1:14:17] Mara sought to frighten him
[1:14:20] he roused against him the fury of the
[1:14:23] Winds
[1:14:25] fear skills rushed toward him from The
[1:14:28] Horizon uprooting trees devastating
[1:14:31] villages
[1:14:32] shaking mountains
[1:14:37] but the hero never moved
[1:14:40] not a single fold of his robe was
[1:14:43] Disturbed
[1:14:46] the evil one summoned the Reigns
[1:14:49] they fell with great violence submerging
[1:14:52] cities and scarring the surface of the
[1:14:54] Earth
[1:14:57] but the hero never moved
[1:15:00] not a single thread of his robe was wet
[1:15:05] the evil one made blazing rocks and
[1:15:08] hurled them at the hero
[1:15:11] they sped through the air but changed
[1:15:14] when they came near the tree and fell
[1:15:17] not as rocks but flowers
[1:15:20] [Music]
[1:15:24] Mara then commanded his army to loose
[1:15:26] their arrows at his enemy
[1:15:29] but the arrows also turned into flowers
[1:15:34] the Army rushed to the hero
[1:15:37] but the light he defused acted as a
[1:15:40] shield to protect him
[1:15:43] swords were shivered
[1:15:45] battle axes were dented by it
[1:15:48] and whenever a weapon fell to the ground
[1:15:51] it too at once changed into a flower
[1:15:58] and suddenly
[1:16:00] filled with Terror at the sight of these
[1:16:02] prodigies
[1:16:04] the soldiers of the evil one fled
[1:16:09] and Mara rung his hands in anguish and
[1:16:11] he cried
[1:16:14] what have I done that this man should
[1:16:16] defeat me
[1:16:17] for they are not a few those whose
[1:16:19] desires I have granted
[1:16:22] I have often been kind and generous
[1:16:26] those cowards who are fleeing could bear
[1:16:28] witness to that
[1:16:31] the troops that were still within
[1:16:33] hearing answered
[1:16:36] yes you have been kind and generous
[1:16:40] we will bear witness to that
[1:16:43] and he what proof has he given of his
[1:16:46] generosity continued Mara
[1:16:51] what sacrifices has he made
[1:16:55] who will bear witness to his kindness
[1:16:59] whereupon a voice came out of the earth
[1:17:01] and it said
[1:17:05] I will bear witness to his generosity
[1:17:10] Mara was struck down with astonishment
[1:17:14] The Voice continued
[1:17:18] yes I the Earth
[1:17:22] I the mother of all beings will bear
[1:17:25] witness to his generosity
[1:17:28] a hundred times a thousand times in the
[1:17:32] course of his previous existences
[1:17:35] his hands his eyes
[1:17:38] his hand
[1:17:40] his whole body have been at the service
[1:17:43] of others
[1:17:45] and in the course of this existence
[1:17:48] which will be the last
[1:17:50] he will destroy old age
[1:17:53] sickness and death
[1:17:58] as he excels you in strength Mara
[1:18:02] even so does he surpass you in
[1:18:04] generosity
[1:18:09] and the evil one saw a woman of great
[1:18:11] Beauty emerged from the earth up to her
[1:18:14] waist
[1:18:15] she bound before the hero
[1:18:18] and clasping her hands she said
[1:18:23] almost holy of men
[1:18:26] I bear witness to your generosity
[1:18:30] then she disappeared
[1:18:35] and Mara the evil one
[1:18:37] wept
[1:18:40] because he had been defeated
[1:18:44] [Music]
[1:18:51] by Sunset the army of the evil one had
[1:18:53] fled
[1:18:56] nothing had Disturbed the hero's
[1:18:58] meditation
[1:19:01] and in the first watch of the night
[1:19:03] he arrived at the knowledge of all that
[1:19:05] had transpired in previous existences
[1:19:10] foreign
[1:19:13] [Music]
[1:19:15] he learned the present state of all
[1:19:17] beings
[1:19:20] in the third
[1:19:22] he understood the chain of causes and
[1:19:25] effects
[1:19:28] hero thought
[1:19:32] Mr Bill is this world that is born
[1:19:36] grows old and dies
[1:19:39] then is reborn only to grow old and die
[1:19:42] again
[1:19:44] and man knows no way out
[1:19:52] and profound meditation he said to
[1:19:54] himself
[1:19:57] thus does Ignorance by the root of death
[1:20:02] of old age
[1:20:03] of suffering
[1:20:06] of despair
[1:20:09] to exist is to suffer
[1:20:14] desire leads from birth to rebirth
[1:20:17] from suffering to further suffering
[1:20:20] [Music]
[1:20:23] by stifling desire
[1:20:25] [Music]
[1:20:26] we prevent birth
[1:20:29] we prevent suffering
[1:20:33] by Leading a life of holiness
[1:20:35] [Music]
[1:20:36] desire is stifled
[1:20:39] and we cease to endure birth and
[1:20:42] suffering
[1:20:43] [Music]
[1:20:48] when Dawn appeared
[1:20:51] this most noble of men was a Buddha
[1:20:57] he exclaimed
[1:21:01] I have had numerous births
[1:21:05] in vain have I sought the builder of the
[1:21:08] house
[1:21:10] oh the torment of Perpetual rebirth
[1:21:15] but I have seen you at last o builder of
[1:21:17] the house
[1:21:19] you no longer build the house
[1:21:24] the rafters are broken
[1:21:28] walls are down
[1:21:32] crumbles
[1:21:35] the mind attains to Nirvana
[1:21:39] birth is no more
[1:21:42] for desire is no more
[1:21:48] twelve times the Earth shook
[1:21:52] the world was like a great flower
[1:21:57] the God sang
[1:22:00] he has come
[1:22:03] he who brings light into the world
[1:22:06] he has come
[1:22:08] [Music]
[1:22:10] long blinded
[1:22:12] the eye of the world has opened
[1:22:15] and the eye of a world is dazzled by the
[1:22:17] Light
[1:22:21] oh conqueror
[1:22:24] you will give all beings that which they
[1:22:26] hunger after
[1:22:29] Guided by the sublime light of the law
