Radical Self-Love Explained: Why the Body Isn't the Problem

Early in a Kingdom Sundays conversation, host Justin Michael Williams stops mid-sentence to tell his guest, and his audience, that he has goosebumps. He is wearing a skin smoother for the camera, so they may not show, but the reaction is real. The guest, New York Times best-selling author Sonya Renee Taylor, has just finished describing an acorn. The acorn, she says, does not strain to become an oak. Everything it needs is already folded inside it. If that is true of a seed, Williams wonders aloud, what does it mean for the body most of us spend our lives trying to fix? The interview that follows is a sustained argument that the body was never the broken thing, and that the work of loving it is less about adding something than about clearing the ground around what is already there.

What is the acorn doing that we aren't?

Taylor is careful about credit. She is quick to say the image is not hers, that she heard it from Marianne, a teacher who was not talking about bodies at all. But when Taylor heard it, she recognized the core of what she had been trying to say for years. In her telling, the acorn is not striving. It is simply in the right conditions, or it is not.

That reframing is the hinge of the whole conversation. Most of the body-love advice that circulates asks us to do something: build confidence, adopt a routine, buy the right product, reach a certain level of self-acceptance before we are allowed to feel at home in our skin. Taylor's version starts from the opposite premise. She describes the human being as something that arrived here "fully embodied vessels of Love." The capacity for wholeness is not a prize at the end of a long program. It is the starting condition.

Then comes the logical turn that gives the metaphor its teeth. If we are born complete and then feel disconnected from that wholeness, something has interfered with the growing. Taylor puts it plainly: "it must not be us it must not be the vessel that's the problem it must be the conditions that's the problem" (Taylor, The Kingdom interview, 4:01). That single sentence moves the blame from the person to the environment, which is a far more radical act than it sounds. It means that self-hatred is not evidence of a defect. It is a reasonable response to a world that has taught us to see our bodies as deficient, dangerous, or wrong.

Williams registers how big that shift is. He says the distinction changes how he hears the phrase "love your body" entirely, because the phrase implies a task, and Taylor is describing a recognition.

Why does Taylor insist on the word "radical"?

Taylor has been doing this work for thirteen years, she tells Williams, back when the conversation about radical self-love was, in her words, "me and like one other hit on the Instagram on the internet" (Taylor, The Kingdom interview, 5:10). She has been careful about vocabulary ever since, and she uses the word "radical" in both of its primary senses.

The first sense is origin. A radical is the root of a thing. Taylor proposes that the love she means is the root of us, "how we started," inherent rather than acquired. The second sense is intensity. She describes a love that is "big wild unruly undisciplined undefiant" and unapologetic (Taylor, The Kingdom interview, 6:29). The intensity is not decorative. It is a response to what she calls "thorough going and extreme circumstances," the saturated messaging that targets bodies from every direction. A gentle, polite self-compassion practice is not built to counter that kind of pressure. A love that is equally thorough and extreme might be.

The third sense is the one Taylor considers most important: a proposal for "drastic political economic and social transformation." Here is where her work parts ways with much of the mainstream body conversation. The conditions that hamper the acorn are not private failings. They are structures. They need to change, not just be endured with better coping.

Is body love a personal project or a political one?

This is the question at the center of Taylor's critique of self-love and body positivity as they are often practiced. She is not dismissing those movements so much as naming a limit. "The most significant difference to me is that they're talking about a thing that is highly individualistic and highly apolitical" (Taylor, The Kingdom interview, 7:07). In that framing, how you feel about your body becomes a solitary inner matter, something to be fixed through a private effort.

Taylor argues that this framing misses something essential. How we feel about ourselves, she says, is shaped by "a social world," "a cultural World," "a familial World," "a political world," and "an economic world." It is also shaped by how we see other people's bodies. A feeling about your own body cannot be separated from the bodies you were taught to rank above or below yours. That is why she describes her interest as a conversation that holds "all those pieces," because only then can we reach what she calls the truth of our relationship with ourselves, which she believes is love.

Her warning is practical. You cannot build a sincere self-love on top of the same assumptions that produced the problem. "We can't get there if we're going to sit it on top of foundation of the same illusions that built the world that we need to dismantle anyway," she says in the interview. For a reader used to hearing body positivity as a matter of attitude, this is a significant reorientation. It locates the work in the world as well as in the mirror.

Are we our thoughts, and does that matter for body love?

Taylor also moves the conversation toward consciousness. She returns several times to the idea that we are not our thoughts. Her point is not that thoughts are bad or that they can be ignored. It is that the thinking mind is a narrow part of a larger intelligence, one she describes in terms that overlap with the names people use for God or Universe. The mind produces a stream of judgments about the body, and it is easy to believe those judgments are us. Stepping back from them, even briefly, is part of what lets the acorn's knowledge surface.

At one point in the excerpt, Taylor discusses the difficulty of doing this kind of work alone. She notes that we are formed by a social environment that is "counter to" what we are trying to recover, and that trying to "figure it out by ourselves" tends to fail. Radical self-love, in her framing, is not a private discipline that happens to be practiced in community. It is a communal inquiry into the conditions that keep us from ourselves.

What does freedom have to do with loving your body?

Freedom enters the conversation as the stakes become concrete. Taylor describes the ways bodies are monitored and judged in public, and the ways people carry those judgments into daily life. Her language here is intense, and the interview itself becomes emotional. At one point she says she could cry as she speaks about women and the shame they carry. The implication is that shame is not a personal flaw to be quietly managed. It is a mechanism that holds people in place, and loosening it is part of what freedom means.

Williams is clearly moved by this part, and so is the audience he is speaking to. The consistent thread is that the body is not the problem to be solved. Taylor calls the body "a manifestation of something far deeper," part of a system that is, in her words, "simply trying to reconcile us to love." The body is the vessel through which that reconciliation happens, which is why she refuses to treat it as an object of improvement.

How do you practice radical self-love, starting now?

The excerpt available here focuses on framing rather than step-by-step technique, and it would be a mistake to invent a program the teacher did not describe. What the conversation does offer is a method of attention. When an uncomfortable belief about the body arises, Taylor suggests noticing it, welcoming it rather than fighting it, and asking what conditions gave rise to it. Williams describes a similar move, inviting thoughts in and letting them be seen rather than obeyed.

The practical implication is that a single shift in perspective can change the whole frame. If the acorn already contains what it needs, then your job is not to become someone else. Your job is to notice what is blocking the growth and to change the conditions, inside yourself and in the world around you, that keep you from feeling it.

Where to go from here

This article draws on the opening portion of a long conversation, and Taylor develops these ideas in far more depth in her own work. To hear the full exchange between Taylor and Williams, watch the complete interview on the Justin Michael Williams channel, where the original Kingdom Sundays episode is also collected in its playlist. Start with the acorn: it is the simplest way into a framework that asks us to stop trying to become whole and begin noticing what has been keeping us from it.

[0:01] I am so excited to present to you this

[0:04] very special interview on how to love

[0:06] your body with New York Times

[0:08] best-selling author Sonya Renee Taylor

[0:11] this interview will blow your mind we've

[0:15] all heard so much about loving our body

[0:18] but Sonya breaks through every myth that

[0:21] there is including how to break through

[0:23] shame how to make sure that you're not

[0:25] having to buy more products and do more

[0:27] things to work your way to loving your

[0:29] body and how to actually break through

[0:32] the noise and the limiting beliefs that

[0:34] we have in our head so we can finally

[0:36] feel this inherent sense of what Sonia

[0:39] calls radical self-love enjoy this

[0:42] interview from the kingdom love you

[0:46] okay everybody

[0:48] I am here with Sonia Renee Taylor this

[0:52] is a very exciting moment for me because

[0:54] I have been taking in her work for

[1:00] I mean in such a deep and meaningful way

[1:03] that is profoundly transformed my life

[1:05] and I reached out to Sonya it was one of

[1:07] those people that I was like I don't

[1:08] know that I'm gonna be able to talk to

[1:10] them you know and and Sonia replied so

[1:13] quickly with just yes when and where

[1:16] here's my availability and so it's such

[1:18] a gift to have you here today Sonya

[1:19] thank you so so much for being here with

[1:22] us at the Kingdom

[1:23] it's a delight to be here thanks for the

[1:25] invitation

[1:26] so you know a couple of things that I

[1:29] feel really excited to talk to you about

[1:31] as it relates to this concept of how to

[1:34] love your body I wanted to have you here

[1:37] because one of my like biggest uh pieces

[1:42] of ethos that I like work on in the

[1:43] world is

[1:45] don't teach only share what you know

[1:48] [Music]

[1:49] and I've we're doing this topic on love

[1:53] this this season on love and I really

[1:55] wanted to do something on how to love

[1:57] your body but I've only come like a

[2:02] certain distance in this loving your

[2:03] body conversation and I felt like I need

[2:07] somebody else to come in here

[2:09] to really help us see what it means to

[2:14] love your body

[2:16] um

[2:17] and you have this story metaphor that

[2:21] you use that I find so powerful about

[2:23] the acorn it really impacted me

[2:27] um when I heard you talk about it and

[2:28] read it so I'd be curious if you'd be

[2:29] okay with starting with that and showing

[2:31] us how that frames in with a new idea of

[2:34] loving your body

[2:36] wow sure I like to always just be like

[2:38] it's not my metaphor y'all I didn't make

[2:40] it up it's Marion Williams yeah we love

[2:43] Marianne's been here with us too so we

[2:45] love her here yeah so yeah I never wanna

[2:47] I never want to pretend like it was mine

[2:49] but I thought did it when I heard her

[2:51] say it and she wasn't talking about the

[2:52] body but when she said it for me it

[2:54] encapsulated what it is that I believe

[2:57] when I'm talking about this idea of

[2:59] radical self-love is you know she

[3:01] describes it and she says that you know

[3:03] an acorn doesn't have to try to become

[3:06] an oak tree it doesn't have effort

[3:08] towards becoming an oak tree everything

[3:10] that it needs in order to grow into the

[3:13] highest expression of itself is already

[3:16] encoded inside of it and so

[3:19] the question then becomes well is the

[3:22] acorn in the right conditions such that

[3:25] that which is inside of it can be

[3:26] activated such that it can be its

[3:27] highest expression of itself and for me

[3:31] that is what radical self-love is which

[3:33] is that we are imbued with everything

[3:36] that it is we need to manifest the

[3:39] highest expressions of ourselves that we

[3:41] arrived here as fully

[3:46] um fully embodied vessels of Love Like

[3:49] that's how we showed up to the planet

[3:51] and

[3:54] the only way in which we could be

[3:56] disconnected from that is such that

[3:58] something about the conditions has made

[4:01] it such that that holistic person of

[4:03] ourselves we don't feel we don't feel it

[4:05] we can't tap into it right and so that

[4:09] made me say well then it must not be us

[4:11] it must not be the vessel that's the

[4:13] problem it must be the conditions that's

[4:14] the problem and if it's the conductance

[4:17] that's the problem then we start talking

[4:18] about what the conditions are so that we

[4:21] can

[4:22] um so that we can separate the idea that

[4:24] there's something wrong with us and put

[4:26] the onus on the things that need to be

[4:28] changed back to where they belong which

[4:30] are the conditions that are hampering

[4:32] our ability to become the fullest

[4:34] expressions of ourselves

[4:36] see this is so this I have little

[4:39] goosebumps you probably can't see them

[4:40] because I got the little skin smoother

[4:41] on but the good got little Goosebumps

[4:44] because this is so big because we hear

[4:47] about this concept of loving your body

[4:50] of like this thing that we have to try

[4:53] to do this thing that we have to try to

[4:56] build or become and you're saying that's

[4:58] not the case so can you just give me a

[5:00] distinction we're going to get into

[5:01] these conditions a distinction between

[5:03] like this kind of self-love so love your

[5:06] body movement and what you're calling

[5:07] radical self-love yeah so I think you

[5:10] know like people

[5:12] when I started doing this work 13 years

[5:14] ago it was me and like one other hit on

[5:17] the Instagram on the internet about

[5:19] radicals and so I was always clear what

[5:22] I was talking about I was talking about

[5:25] how is it that we become aware of and

[5:29] connect to

[5:30] a way of being in ourselves that one I

[5:35] literally use the definitions of the

[5:36] word radical that is the origin of a

[5:40] thing right so I'm proposing that this

[5:42] sense of love that I'm talking about is

[5:44] the origin of us it's how we started

[5:46] that it's inherent

[5:48] um again we don't have to figure out how

[5:50] to get it it's already there

[5:53] um radical as in

[5:56] um thorough going or extreme I'm talking

[5:58] about a big wild unruly undisciplined

[6:03] undefiant love and Unapologetic love

[6:06] right

[6:07] um the kind of love that needs to be

[6:10] thorough going in extreme because we

[6:11] live in thorough going and extreme

[6:13] circumstances that tell us we should not

[6:15] love ourselves we live in thorough

[6:17] growing and extreme circumstances that

[6:19] Target our bodies as deficient as

[6:22] dangerous as

[6:24] um as as something aberrant right and so

[6:27] we need something that counts as that

[6:29] I'm talking radical as in

[6:33] um proposing drastic political economic

[6:35] and social transformation that's the

[6:37] other definition of radical that and to

[6:39] me is one of the most important ones

[6:41] because it gets to oh there are

[6:43] conditions that are hampering that Acorn

[6:45] and those conditions need to be changed

[6:47] and so when I hear other people talking

[6:51] about self-love or talking about body

[6:54] positivity in these sort of other words

[6:56] that folks use

[6:58] first and foremost I think the most

[7:00] significant difference to me is that

[7:02] they're talking about a thing that is

[7:04] highly individualistic and highly

[7:07] apolitical

[7:08] right it's like it's how I feel about

[7:10] myself right and I'm like how you feel

[7:13] about yourself it doesn't exist in a

[7:15] vacuum it is not some solitary

[7:17] experience that you're just having that

[7:20] how you feel about yourself escaped by a

[7:22] social world and shaped by a cultural

[7:25] World in a familial World in a political

[7:27] world in an economic world and

[7:30] how you feel about yourself is also

[7:33] shaped and informed about how you feel

[7:35] about other people's bodies

[7:37] and I'm interested in a conversation

[7:40] that holds all those pieces

[7:43] such that we might get to the truth of

[7:46] our actual relationship which again I

[7:48] believe is love but we can't get there

[7:50] if we're going to sit it on top of

[7:52] foundation of the same illusions that

[7:55] built the world that we need to

[7:57] dismantle anyway and so I'm talking

[8:00] about something that is transformative

[8:03] and I'm talking about something that

[8:04] isn't just about the body the body is a

[8:07] manifestation of something far deeper

[8:10] far more profound something far more

[8:13] intangible than these you know my ex

[8:16] used to call them unless she thought

[8:18] tubes

[8:24] found in these these thought tubes could

[8:27] actually

[8:28] encapsulate right in its fullness and so

[8:31] the body is

[8:33] part of an entire

[8:35] system

[8:37] um that I believe is simply trying to

[8:40] reconcile us to love right yeah and and

[8:43] the body is the The Vessel by which we

[8:47] get to take the journey to reconciling

[8:49] to us see so this is this is what this

[8:52] was like the main thing that really

[8:55] shifted things for me in reading your

[8:58] work is understanding so I'm just

[9:00] guiding people through this again like

[9:01] in the way that I got this in my body

[9:03] was I am the acorn

[9:06] and I don't need any instruction to

[9:10] become the oak tree I don't need to add

[9:12] anything I don't need to learn anything

[9:14] this is inherent in me and so radical

[9:17] self-love for me for my body to for me

[9:20] to become the highest expression of

[9:21] myself is natural what is not natural is

[9:25] all the is all the conditions is

[9:29] all the things from society from our

[9:31] Trauma from our programming from

[9:32] politics from everything that we then

[9:35] put those glasses on

[9:37] and start seeing the world through those

[9:40] glasses not nice glasses like you've got

[9:42] all right now some other kind of glasses

[9:45] so so this is the piece when we talk

[9:48] about those conditions I in a lot of

[9:51] your work I hear you talking about

[9:53] this imagination

[9:56] that we are

[9:59] imagining through that's not really our

[10:02] own imagination or these thoughts that

[10:05] we're having that we think are our

[10:07] thoughts but they're not actually our

[10:09] thoughts and so can you help me

[10:12] understand that because once I got that

[10:14] I was like oh my gosh all these thoughts

[10:16] that I'm and I I teach meditation I know

[10:19] I'm not my thoughts but somehow I

[10:21] thought those thoughts were my thoughts

[10:24] right you're like I'm not my thoughts

[10:26] but those thoughts are mine right right

[10:29] right right right right right and it's

[10:31] actually not only are you not your

[10:32] thoughts but those thoughts aren't yours

[10:34] right that we're we are yeah and I think

[10:38] this is the thing that's really

[10:38] difficult for people because it you know

[10:41] so much of our striving so much of our

[10:43] struggling is about having a sense of

[10:45] control and so the idea that like our

[10:49] thoughts on our own is like a level of

[10:52] we're not in control that I think is

[10:54] really unnerving for folks

[10:56] um but I also think is profoundly

[10:58] liberatory once we actually let it

[11:00] settle enough people who are hearing

[11:02] this for the first time those your

[11:04] thoughts are not your own I think people

[11:06] hear you are not your thoughts in a

[11:07] meditative context like you're also not

[11:10] your own whose are they where are they

[11:11] coming from Sonia

[11:13] we're we're

[11:14] creepers we're on a Swiffer Sweeper

[11:17] across the floor just gonna pick up

[11:18] what's on the floor

[11:21] you know like we are

[11:24] you know if we want to be in a sort of

[11:26] more metaphysical conversation about it

[11:28] all of us are simply

[11:31] um

[11:32] inside of

[11:34] you know what we call the collective

[11:36] unconscious right it's or the collective

[11:38] Consciousness that we

[11:40] move through unconsciously right we're

[11:43] we are all inside of these ideas and

[11:48] these

[11:50] um beliefs and these narratives and we

[11:52] didn't create them no one ever woke up

[11:55] one day and was like

[11:56] thinness is the best I simply I created

[12:00] that thought right like I created that

[12:02] thought and that's why I moved that way

[12:04] that's not how that thought came into

[12:06] being we know that's not how that

[12:07] thought came into being because you got

[12:09] it from some place and part of the

[12:11] problem is if we don't interrogate where

[12:13] the message came from we think the

[12:15] thought and we just stop there right and

[12:18] part of the invitation I think of the

[12:20] work around radical self-love is can I

[12:23] get curious about where the thought came

[12:25] from because when we followed the thread

[12:27] back we realized that that thought is

[12:30] tied into systems most often systems

[12:34] related to power and money yes systems

[12:38] related to capitalism systems related to

[12:41] patriarchy systems related to how

[12:43] domination moves in our societies that's

[12:47] generally where these thoughts that put

[12:48] us in and uh adversarial relationship

[12:52] with our bodies they start there and so

[12:55] if you can if you can get like to the

[12:58] point and what I this is the distinction

[13:00] that I think helps people sometimes is

[13:03] from a radical self-love standpoint

[13:06] any thought that tells me that I am

[13:09] somehow unworthy unlovable not enough

[13:13] can't be my original thought because

[13:15] it's the antithesis it would be like an

[13:18] acorn being like nope I'm supposed to be

[13:20] a dogwood tree

[13:23] can't be original because everything

[13:25] that's encoded inside of an acorn is to

[13:28] become an oak tree right so if

[13:30] everything in me is encoded to be a

[13:32] manifestation of love then all thoughts

[13:35] that are the contrary of that can't be

[13:37] from me right and and like the reason

[13:40] that is has to be true is because the

[13:43] same intelligence God being Universe

[13:45] spirit that may be acorn

[13:47] made you

[13:48] yes

[13:50] with everything

[13:53] yeah yeah exactly so let me let me let

[13:56] me try some things on it let me Trace

[13:58] one thing to make this so clear for

[14:00] people so

[14:01] if I wake up but I have the thought or

[14:03] if I'm having a thought in my life I

[14:05] need to be skinnier I need to lose

[14:08] weight

[14:09] what we're going to right there's one

[14:12] aspect that if it's something that's

[14:13] actually having to do with your health

[14:15] right that's one whole element but if

[14:19] we're really going to it and most people

[14:21] like I just need to be skinnier it's

[14:22] summer and I need to be skinnier we

[14:24] trace this back and we look at what

[14:27] Collective unconscious has sold us this

[14:30] lie that says that you're skinnier

[14:32] you're more beautiful you're skinnier

[14:34] you're more attractive you're skinnier

[14:36] you're more desirable more people will

[14:37] want you like that is none of that

[14:39] actually comes from you that comes from

[14:43] exactly media from politics from

[14:45] companies trying to make money on you

[14:47] losing weight and buying their stuff so

[14:49] that's what you're saying it's their

[14:50] thoughts that we're thinking in our

[14:51] heads and thinking right exactly and

[14:55] that those things that they've attached

[14:57] it to desirable more beautiful people

[15:01] will want me does that all mean at the

[15:03] end like when you when you distill that

[15:06] down to its simplest form it means oh

[15:08] I'm lovable

[15:10] all of that is trying to get you to

[15:13] figure out how to externalize a thing

[15:15] that is internal

[15:17] right oh that will make me lovable

[15:20] except what I'm proposing to you is that

[15:22] you are inherently lovable that love is

[15:25] the condition of your entire nature

[15:27] which means you can't be separated from

[15:29] it so as soon as someone's trying to

[15:30] sell you a way to get it you know they

[15:33] lying

[15:35] as soon as someone is trying to sell you

[15:38] a way to get it you know they're lying

[15:39] because the love

[15:41] was already done it it's already there

[15:44] yeah okay tell me something I already

[15:46] have why would I need it right right and

[15:49] you actually of all the things in the

[15:51] world to try to buy that's the one we

[15:53] know you can't buy how many things have

[15:55] we bought that thought it was going to

[15:56] give us something internal make us love

[15:58] something and it doesn't work right and

[16:00] still and still buying more things still

[16:02] trying to figure it out through that

[16:04] method which is why I say there's an

[16:07] actually there's something wrong with

[16:08] that method and what does it look like

[16:11] if we interrupt that story that the

[16:14] thing we're searching for can be found

[16:16] outside of us and actually return to

[16:19] what is the truth in me that I'm just

[16:21] looking to excavate and what are the

[16:23] things that have built up around it that

[16:25] make it difficult to get to yes yes okay

[16:28] so

[16:29] so Sonia there is this this element has

[16:32] been really challenging for me and what

[16:34] this part that I'm going to share with

[16:35] you and I think people will really

[16:36] resonate with this so I read your book I

[16:40] do the practices I'm in my work I

[16:43] understand that I am the acorn right

[16:46] okay then I step into the world

[16:50] right then I go to this recently just

[16:52] came up for me I get invited to my first

[16:56] party at the beach

[16:58] with a whole bunch of gay guys in Los

[17:01] Angeles right

[17:06] and the Mirage

[17:08] comes back

[17:10] to anybody they have to go to a reunion

[17:13] they have to go to a wedding they go to

[17:16] see they're going to see people in their

[17:18] family or whatever and and you've done

[17:20] these practices and then how do we

[17:23] stay with it when you step back into a

[17:26] world that doesn't have these tools like

[17:28] what is what is that you know

[17:32] right and so I mean one of the things

[17:34] that I say

[17:35] um in in my work in the workbook your

[17:37] body's not in a publicly workbook in

[17:39] there I give practices 10 tools the

[17:40] radical self-love here the things we

[17:42] need to practice and I tell people all

[17:43] the time fools nine and ten are the most

[17:45] important and if you don't do them this

[17:47] will be a rough Journey forever and Tool

[17:50] number nine is you have to be in

[17:51] community it's again the story of

[17:54] individualism part of that story of

[17:57] external right it's the external world

[17:59] that's going to give you something right

[18:00] I can figure it out all by myself right

[18:02] like that's capitalism is like nope I

[18:04] did it all by myself and you reward me

[18:06] all by myself right and then when I feel

[18:09] terrible it's all by myself and it's all

[18:10] my fault right like all of it just takes

[18:12] you back to this III story and what I

[18:16] offer is that it is impossible in a

[18:19] world of constant like a constant

[18:23] barrage of messages and not enough and

[18:25] it's a constant barrage of messages of

[18:27] your deficient in this way or that way

[18:30] or you're just not going to ever be good

[18:32] enough it's impossible against those

[18:34] odds to try to do this work by yourself

[18:36] and part of the reason it's impossible

[18:38] because the work isn't supposed to be by

[18:39] yourself we are inherently

[18:41] interdependent be it and so you have to

[18:44] build a community of people who are

[18:45] moving like you're moving part of this

[18:47] you know

[18:48] I became vegan a year ago and it you

[18:52] know it talk about like oh I'm around

[18:54] people who live in real different than I

[18:57] yeah my family's like I'm sorry you're a

[19:00] vegan please pass the chicken wings

[19:02] especially to every food function right

[19:04] they like oh I made there's a salad bag

[19:06] in the fridge son you have at it right

[19:08] right

[19:10] um

[19:11] and it's in those moments where I'm like

[19:13] oh Jesus I don't know if I'm going to be

[19:15] able to do this and what I realize is

[19:18] right if I haven't built a community

[19:19] around my around myself that firms the

[19:22] way it is that I'm moving now then I

[19:25] will absolutely be pulled into the

[19:26] undertow of a former way of thinking

[19:28] right and so I have to surround myself

[19:32] with people and things and activities

[19:35] and ideas that reminded me one of the

[19:37] things that is helpful for me is like oh

[19:40] like I have a check in before I do a

[19:42] thing that I know is going to put me in

[19:44] a world that is you know counter to the

[19:46] the way I'm trying to move now I have a

[19:48] check in with someone who is in my in my

[19:51] community of practice now before and

[19:54] after I book in those things so that I'm

[19:57] not going to dive in with no life rafts

[20:01] with no Touchstone to what it is that

[20:04] actually

[20:05] um supports me and so I think that's

[20:08] just one small way to do it one small if

[20:10] I can just jump in it's just like first

[20:13] of all the we know this and I don't know

[20:16] why I've never thought about it until I

[20:19] read your book in terms of body because

[20:21] we are sold this live at we're just

[20:23] supposed to love ourselves by ourselves

[20:25] and figure it out by ourselves but we

[20:28] know in any other way like anyone who's

[20:30] tried to and everyone here has done it

[20:32] tried to elevate their vibration or

[20:34] increase their spiritual you've had to

[20:36] let some people go

[20:38] of course gotta change you can't elevate

[20:42] your behind with the toxic people around

[20:44] you so why would you be able to love

[20:46] your body or have radical self-love in

[20:50] this new way surrounded by a bunch of

[20:52] people

[20:53] who don't understand I'm not in

[20:55] alignment with that who don't understand

[20:56] that exactly so what's the second what's

[20:58] the second you said nine and ten are the

[21:00] two ones and ten is is give yourself

[21:03] some Grace there is a another one of the

[21:06] aspects right uh toxic aspects of the

[21:10] culture that we have been indoctrinated

[21:12] into one is individualism and the second

[21:14] is perfectionism right and then we've

[21:16] taken that idea of perfectionism and

[21:18] even placed it inside of the realm of

[21:20] self-love oh my gosh I have to do this

[21:22] perfectly I have to figure out how to

[21:24] you know like

[21:26] one of my workshop participants once

[21:28] called it medisham it's like oh now I

[21:30] have shame for having body shape right

[21:33] right like that's such an unsustainable

[21:35] way to exist in the world and what I

[21:39] offer inside of this idea of give

[21:41] yourself some Graces again we are inside

[21:43] of a world with a very specific

[21:47] indoctrination that it is frying and

[21:50] constantly reifying in US it is

[21:53] impossible to walk through every single

[21:55] day feeling like you know some radiant

[21:58] beam of radical self-love that's an

[22:01] unrealistic expectation and I practice

[22:04] for myself like instead of 13 years

[22:06] spinning nothing but I'm working on this

[22:10] idea of radical self-love and there are

[22:12] days that I don't feel very loving

[22:13] toward my body and on those days I

[22:16] practice and I love the Sonya that

[22:19] doesn't love her body until Sonia loves

[22:21] our body again I love you Sonia who

[22:24] thinks you're not enough today I love

[22:26] you Sonia who is displeased with your

[22:29] cellular I love you I love you imperfect

[22:32] Sonya because the more that I can

[22:35] practice loving the Sonya on her journey

[22:38] as opposed to the Sonya who's arrived at

[22:40] a destination

[22:42] the more I am able to sustain my

[22:46] connection to that love over time no

[22:48] matter the conditions

[22:51] this is this is really important because

[22:54] as we're on our path to spiritual growth

[22:56] I feel like so many of us we feel like

[22:59] we've done all this work on ourselves

[23:01] and then we shame ourselves when we feel

[23:03] like we've quote unquote taken a step

[23:05] back yes we learned so much in those in

[23:10] that piece right of how to love

[23:12] ourselves through every phase of the

[23:13] journey I want to ask you another

[23:14] question Sonya

[23:16] um

[23:17] I will tell you the part of this that

[23:20] felt like it really got me in your work

[23:25] in listening to you talk about this work

[23:27] that I really had to own and this you

[23:29] know what you're doing because this is

[23:31] this this part of this is my homework is

[23:33] some big Shadow work this is what we're

[23:35] doing here is Shadow work and I love

[23:37] some Shadow work here we do it here and

[23:39] so the piece of it that was so big for

[23:42] me

[23:43] is understanding that a big part of the

[23:46] reason of why I sometimes don't want to

[23:50] put down the old Story the old

[23:53] imagination is because I lose something

[23:57] when I do absolutely and I want you to

[24:00] speak about this because when you talked

[24:02] about this I said oh goodness this is

[24:04] really what it is this is really why I

[24:08] keep working my body out in a way that

[24:10] is causing me pain why I keep doing XYZ

[24:13] so can you speak about what we lose

[24:17] yes well I mean we're going to lose what

[24:22] the external World promised us now the

[24:24] truth of the matter is we weren't never

[24:26] going to have it to begin with yeah and

[24:27] I think that's the part that we actually

[24:29] have to Grapple with right but we the we

[24:32] elude the illusion that one day we will

[24:34] finally attain the thing right whether

[24:36] that's enough wealth to feel worthy or

[24:39] enough desirability to feel worthy or

[24:42] enough connections and popularity to

[24:44] whatever that is that we think is going

[24:46] to finally make us enough we're going to

[24:48] lose that and we're going to lose the

[24:50] capital that this world tosses at us as

[24:53] carrots to keep us on the on the hamster

[24:55] wheel right like you're gonna like

[24:57] because life does reward you for trying

[25:00] to play the game right like you will

[25:02] Ascend to certain levels or you will get

[25:04] certain trappings those things will

[25:06] happen but what you'll always notice is

[25:07] inside you'll still feel completely and

[25:09] totally empty you'll still feel utterly

[25:11] disconnected from any sense of Truth or

[25:13] self I say all the time we know this to

[25:15] be true because Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos

[25:18] are still trying to make more money

[25:20] right

[25:21] Jada made as much money as they could

[25:23] they could spend all their grandkids and

[25:25] their great great grandkids for eons and

[25:26] eons and they still want more because

[25:29] there's never going to be enough to fill

[25:32] that hole and so yes you got to give up

[25:36] the illusion that one day that thing

[25:38] outside you is gonna fill the hole you

[25:40] have to relinquish that and you'll have

[25:42] to relinquish the petty pieces of power

[25:46] and domination that you are given in

[25:50] exchange for continuing to trade your

[25:52] Humanity for that illusion

[25:55] and this is when I really had to own

[25:58] this

[25:59] it said okay Justin

[26:02] if you stop putting your body through

[26:04] this and you stop looking the way that

[26:08] the system has told you that you should

[26:11] look

[26:12] to be whatever

[26:14] you might lose some power

[26:17] you might lose walking into a room and

[26:22] getting benefits just because you look a

[26:25] certain way and people don't want to

[26:26] talk about this you might lose being in

[26:29] a space and being one of the more

[26:31] attractive or skinny or whatever people

[26:33] in the space and then you lose the

[26:35] automatic attention that makes you feel

[26:37] loved but guess what inside of all those

[26:41] spaces this is where people have to get

[26:42] real what you just said when I go in

[26:44] those spaces and even if I do feel that

[26:46] attention and power and love I still

[26:49] feel empty inside you're still empty

[26:52] It's never enough

[26:53] It's never enough and not only is it not

[26:56] this is the thing I want people to pair

[26:57] together right if you need an internal

[27:00] marker it's you still feel empty if you

[27:03] need an external marker

[27:04] power at whose expense right and so

[27:07] you're inside of a system that's like

[27:09] not only do you get to keep harming

[27:12] yourself and depleting yourself you also

[27:14] get to keep harming and depleting other

[27:15] people because that's the loop that that

[27:18] is asking us to stay in and when we step

[27:20] off of that yes we lose power inside of

[27:23] that system I want to go back to what

[27:25] you said before about that system is a

[27:28] certain set of imaginations

[27:31] yes you will lose power inside of the

[27:34] imagination of white supremacist

[27:37] capitalists hetero ableist phobic

[27:40] patriarchy yep you certainly will guess

[27:43] what that system is diabolical bibly

[27:45] violent and the scourge of all the

[27:48] things it is that we are navigating in

[27:49] the world right now and so yes I don't

[27:52] want to live in that imagination and the

[27:54] truth of the matter is every time I have

[27:56] relinquished power in that space I have

[27:59] gained power in my own beingness and it

[28:02] creates a whole new possible world I

[28:05] live differently today because I move

[28:08] differently outside of that system and

[28:10] there's nothing that that system offered

[28:12] me that I don't have access to in a way

[28:15] that allows me to still have my Humanity

[28:16] intact

[28:18] grew authentic real connections with

[28:20] people who actually value and love me

[28:22] and the ability to create the kind of

[28:25] world I desire all of us to live in not

[28:27] just my opportunity to cash into the old

[28:29] one and that is the freedom that is

[28:32] freedom that's Freedom that's Freedom

[28:36] yes instead of thinking I'm gonna have

[28:39] freedom once I look like this one time

[28:41] like this and then you get a little bite

[28:42] of it and that's what the system does oh

[28:43] look you got some attention gone

[28:46] more no now you're in jail now you're in

[28:48] jail to that thing now you are

[28:49] incarcerated by that thing freedom is

[28:52] the ability to be 100 in Integrity with

[28:56] yourself

[28:57] that is freedom

[29:00] now Sonia I I want to ask you

[29:04] because we have people in this community

[29:07] who are committed deeply to creating a

[29:12] world where everyone can be free

[29:14] committed to creating a world where we

[29:16] can come together across divides and

[29:17] raise each other up yeah

[29:21] if I continue

[29:24] to hate on my body if I continue to live

[29:27] in this system how is this affecting

[29:30] other people because I know it can't

[29:32] just be about me

[29:35] yeah absolutely not well it goes back to

[29:38] what you just said about this idea of

[29:40] like if I'm not if I you know when I

[29:42] walk into the spaceship and the thinnest

[29:44] I'm the most attractive if I'm the most

[29:46] desirable if I have the most right all

[29:48] of that is

[29:50] how do I

[29:52] become

[29:53] more important than the other people

[29:56] here

[29:57] right it's how do I the way I talk about

[29:59] it is that we exist in a world that has

[30:01] a ladder of bodily hierarchy you have a

[30:04] a ladder right which means wherever you

[30:06] are on that ladder based off of you know

[30:09] your physical

[30:11] presentation based off of your

[30:14] socioeconomic status your educate all

[30:16] these things go into that ladder and

[30:19] wherever you are on that ladder

[30:21] there are people who are above you and

[30:24] there are people who are below you

[30:26] and your attempt to secure your station

[30:29] in that ladder or your attempt to ascend

[30:32] that ladder

[30:33] demands that there remain people below

[30:36] you

[30:37] it demands that there be people who get

[30:41] less than you have that are seen less

[30:44] than you are who are desired less than

[30:47] you are who are prepared for less than

[30:49] you are who ultimately have less

[30:51] resource and protection and safety than

[30:53] you do because those are the things that

[30:55] you get people higher up on the ladder

[30:57] right we get people higher up on the

[30:59] ladder more resource to give them more

[31:01] safety we give them more protection we

[31:02] give them more care right and the people

[31:05] lower the ladder get less of all those

[31:06] things and so every time you try to

[31:09] ascend that ladder you reaffirm that

[31:11] there's an entire selection of humans

[31:13] that should have and will have less

[31:17] safety care protection resource and love

[31:21] than you have

[31:23] um

[31:24] and so every time

[31:26] that I continue to play that game

[31:30] I am basically stepping on somebody who

[31:34] is below me millions of people millions

[31:36] of people and saying stay where you are

[31:38] and let me stand where you are and let

[31:40] me stand on your head let me stand on

[31:42] your head so I can

[31:45] Sonia

[31:47] I I can't thank you enough for your work

[31:51] um I mean it really is the best thing

[31:54] that I have ever heard and read and I've

[31:56] been working this story I've been

[31:58] working this for my entire life I've

[32:02] been working this for as far back as I

[32:04] have a memory I'll never forget I'll

[32:07] just tell you I could cry like I just

[32:09] you your work and you have

[32:12] have given me a pathway to freedom in a

[32:15] way that I've never experienced and so I

[32:16] just want to thank you because for me

[32:18] this started I remember I was in sixth

[32:21] grade

[32:22] and me and a bunch of friends went to

[32:25] take this um physical education class at

[32:29] a community college that was about

[32:30] weight lifting and I'm the young kind of

[32:33] scrawny gay but in the closet black boy

[32:37] at school and I'm with all these

[32:41] straight boys who have been athletes

[32:44] and I just remember being in that space

[32:47] and all the girls at the point when I

[32:50] cared about that but like all the girls

[32:51] and all the people were just all about

[32:54] these guys and I remember thinking

[32:58] it was the first time I thought what is

[33:00] it about me why are they not looking at

[33:03] me but they're looking at them and I saw

[33:05] when they would take their shirts off

[33:06] after this class

[33:08] oh they their bodies are like that and

[33:12] so they're more desirable they're more

[33:14] powerful and from sixth grade until now

[33:18] I've been trying to catch up to those

[33:21] boys yeah but guess what I'm the acorn

[33:26] that's not supposed to be like those

[33:28] boys it my body breaks down every time I

[33:31] even try

[33:32] and so this made me see the status the

[33:37] power the whole frame that has been

[33:41] having me living inside of a system that

[33:43] again was never mine to begin with in

[33:47] the first place yeah yeah an illusion

[33:50] right an illusion that we all got sold

[33:52] and you know my hope is always just that

[33:55] I'd be a contribution to how we get out

[33:58] of the illusion back into our true

[34:00] selves that's all yes can you I would

[34:03] love it if you could close us out with

[34:05] with maybe a little practice because

[34:09] um

[34:10] we talked about being inside of this old

[34:12] imagination

[34:14] and I think a part of what people will

[34:16] be be hoping for is like a felt

[34:20] experience of what it feels like to be

[34:22] in

[34:24] the real imagination the right

[34:26] imagination you know a new imagination

[34:28] could you guide us through just a short

[34:30] little something to help get us into

[34:33] that

[34:34] space so we can start to create and live

[34:36] from there

[34:37] yeah I mean I think what

[34:41] oh there's I'm like What's one that

[34:44] doesn't get us you know for me what I've

[34:47] realized is just it's an onion layer but

[34:49] that's okay actually and so I think what

[34:51] I would say is the first thing is

[34:54] like

[34:55] to allow ourselves to be like all right

[34:57] what's the biggest thing that I hear in

[35:00] this journey hey what's the thing that

[35:02] feels the most

[35:04] terrifying to me right about moving

[35:08] toward my own radical self-love for me

[35:11] it's losing love from other people

[35:12] that's for me got it and then so once we

[35:16] identify that in the next activity is

[35:19] can I welcome the fear of losing love

[35:22] okay

[35:24] and I let that in can I let in the fear

[35:27] of losing love or whatever it is for the

[35:30] people or whatever it is whatever that

[35:32] fear is that you named can you just say

[35:34] I I welcome you here

[35:36] right

[35:38] and let that be

[35:42] and then ask that fear once you really

[35:45] have a felt sense of it a felt sense

[35:47] like I feel this in my like where do you

[35:50] feel that fear when you think about it

[35:51] where in your body you feel that fear

[35:54] so my chest for me is just there my

[35:57] heart starts beating fast yeah yeah

[35:59] right and so you're like all right

[36:01] that's in my chest

[36:04] and then you're just asking what do you

[36:05] want me to know

[36:12] it says that you're you're loved anyways

[36:15] baby

[36:17] right

[36:18] here's the thing that comes up for me

[36:20] all the time is when that fear comes up

[36:24] the first thing to do is welcome it

[36:26] because it has information for you but

[36:28] we spend so much time being like you

[36:30] must keep the fear out must go do the

[36:33] thing that's how we keep the fear out

[36:35] where I push it away by going to do the

[36:37] thing that I think externally is going

[36:39] to give it to me the invitation is to

[36:42] welcome it because it has a message for

[36:44] you and it's always a message that

[36:46] reminds you of that authentic crew

[36:49] experience of radical self-love and so

[36:52] when you feel that fear of this journey

[36:54] come up stop and invite it in that has

[36:57] something to tell you and it's going to

[36:59] be sweet it's going to be loving and

[37:01] it's going to be the next step to how

[37:03] you really reclaim your own seated

[37:06] empowered place of radical self-love

[37:10] um

[37:11] Sonia thank you I mean this is so

[37:13] powerful because what we know often is

[37:15] when we're faced with fear it's because

[37:17] we're expanding beyond our comfort zone

[37:19] and in this space that's exactly where

[37:21] we want to get is into a new space

[37:24] beyond our comfort zone

[37:25] absolutely Sonya

[37:29] thank you so much I am so thankful I'm

[37:33] so grateful this is going to help so

[37:36] many people

[37:38] um as we close is there anything that

[37:40] you would like to share and just like

[37:42] any parting closing words with folks

[37:46] um I mean one just thank you so much for

[37:47] inviting me I appreciate it um folks

[37:49] often ask me like how can they do this

[37:52] people ask me a lot about how to do this

[37:54] work with kids and so I have a new book

[37:56] coming out and I tell October that you

[37:58] can pre-order right now called The Book

[38:00] of radical answers real questions from

[38:02] real kids just like you and it is for

[38:04] ages 10 to 14 and kids around the world

[38:07] wrote in questions about how they are

[38:09] moving through these ideas of body

[38:11] identity politics gender religion all of

[38:14] these things well how do they do that

[38:16] from a radical self-love standpoint and

[38:18] I'm 100 certain that this is for kids

[38:20] and it's for the kids inside of us and

[38:22] so I really invite folks to go pre-order

[38:25] book of radical answers and you can find

[38:28] the link for that on my Instagram page

[38:31] yeah okay and it'll also be there any

[38:34] place books are sold yeah yeah so that's

[38:36] that's a really powerful sign that

[38:38] you're doing this work for kids because

[38:39] if with if I had this when I was

[38:42] younger right right

[38:45] yeah I'm hoping we can give folks some

[38:48] years of their lives back yeah save a

[38:50] lot of money on therapy well everybody

[38:53] everybody uh please show your love to

[38:57] Sonia in the chat in the comments

[38:58] wherever it is that you're watching this

[39:00] Sonia we thank you we honor you we love

[39:03] you we rise together and I'm just so

[39:05] grateful for you thank you

[39:07] well so mutual thank you

Frequently Asked Questions

Taylor defines radical self-love as the recognition that we are born with everything we need to become our highest expression, much like an acorn already contains the oak. She uses 'radical' in its sense of origin, meaning the root of who we are, and in its sense of drastic social and political transformation. The love she describes is intense and unapologetic because the conditions around us are intense in their messaging about bodies.
The acorn metaphor, which Taylor credits to Marianne, says an acorn does not have to strive to become an oak tree because everything it needs is already encoded inside it. Taylor applies this to the body: if we are whole from the start, then disconnection from that wholeness points to the conditions around us, not to a defect in the person. The metaphor shifts the work from fixing ourselves to changing the environment that blocks growth.
Taylor says the key difference is that body positivity and similar self-love approaches often treat body feelings as highly individualistic and highly apolitical. Radical self-love insists that how we feel about our bodies is shaped by social, cultural, familial, political, and economic forces, as well as by how we view other people's bodies. For Taylor, lasting body love requires addressing those structures rather than only shifting personal attitudes.
Taylor argues that if we arrive in the world as whole, embodied vessels of love, then feeling disconnected from ourselves must be caused by conditions that hamper our growth. She frames the body as a manifestation of something deeper and as the vessel through which we reconcile ourselves to love. Putting the onus on conditions, rather than on the person, is central to her argument.
Taylor's framing rejects the idea that body love is something you must build, earn, or purchase. She describes it as an inherent starting point that is obscured by shame and external messaging. The practical emphasis in this conversation is on noticing and welcoming limiting beliefs and examining the conditions that produce them.
In the interview, Taylor says she started this work thirteen years earlier, when the conversation about radical self-love was small enough that she could name only one other voice online. She has since developed the framework through her writing and public work. The interview itself is a conversation with host Justin Michael Williams from The Kingdom.
Taylor suggests that the thinking mind produces a constant stream of judgments about the body, and it is easy to mistake those judgments for who we are. Stepping back from them creates room for a deeper intelligence she links to concepts like God or Universe. Recognizing thoughts as passing rather than as identity is part of what allows the acorn's inherent wholeness to surface.
