Invoking the Sacred: Voice, Ritual and Reciprocity in Bali

Suzanne Sterling
Suzanne Sterling

Watch · 6

The sun is out in Bali, and Lilou Mace is standing in it with a camera, greeting her viewers as "my delicious go-creators" from the Bali Spirit Festival, where she has just watched Suzanne Sterling perform on the first night. The conversation that follows, recorded on April 1 and published by Mace's channel in May 2016, is a loose, funny and often searching hour of talk about a question most spiritual seekers eventually ask: how do you stop waiting for permission and start invoking the sacred yourself? Sterling, an ecstatic vocalist, composer and ritual teacher who has spent roughly thirty years in ritual arts, answers without a formula. She talks about spiritual authority, about the word "priestess" and why she uses it anyway, about giving back to the cultures you learn from, and about how language and the human voice are not decoration on sacred life but its doorway.

Mace opens by naming the territory. She wants to know "how can we invoke the sacred in our life," and she is careful to say that Sterling "haven't always been there," that the place where a person can share the sacred is something arrived at, not simply inherited. It is a useful framing, and it sets up the interview's central tension. The sacred, in Sterling's telling, is not located in a single temple, lineage or teacher. It has to be claimed, practiced and handed on, and the rest of the conversation is largely a map of how she came to that understanding.

What does it mean to be your own spiritual authority?

Sterling's first answer is the one everything else grows from. "I believe that in this moment in time it's important for all of us to be our own spiritual authority," she says, and she is quick to add that she means it "in the best sense of the word," not as a dismissal of what came before. Her argument is about the present moment. She describes a global culture "rising up with a certain spirit of awakening" that is non-denominational, not attached to any one tradition, and she frames it as a shared project: people are being asked to help build a global spiritual culture, along with global economic, political and artistic cultures.

The inheritance, for Sterling, is enormous and valuable. "We're so privileged to have access to it," she says of the traditions that came before. Her prescription is to "drink up" what has been handed down, integrate it into the now, and evolve it forward. That is a different posture from either rejecting old forms or simply copying them. It asks a practitioner to know the sources deeply enough to carry them into a new context without turning them into costume.

She also describes her own method, which is a kind of disciplined eclecticism. She has studied many traditions over a long period without affiliating with any one of them. She says this has helped her "extract, hopefully, what works" from different rituals and ceremonies, "with full respect," and then offer what she finds as "universal truths" to the generation that follows. The distinction she is drawing, between extracting principles and taking surface forms, is the hinge of the whole talk, and it returns when she discusses reciprocity.

Why call yourself a priestess when the word is so limiting?

Mace raises the labels directly. Sterling has been called a "musical priestess," and the culture around her includes many other titles: shaman, avatar, goddess, mystic. Her response is blunt. "I would never call myself a shaman nor would I ever call myself a goddess," she says, and when Mace pushes back with a laugh, Sterling concedes the point about the larger potential in everyone but keeps her own boundaries.

Her reason for accepting "priestess" is practical rather than mystical. She says she is "actually trained in ritual arts," that she has worked with several strong traditions for thirty years, and that she is an elder in one of them and trains people in it. Her interest, she says, is in "the divine feminine rising up and women stepping into positions of spiritual leadership," and she admits there is "no great word for that." "Priestess is very limiting," she says, "and yet it's the only one I found that actually sort of says it." It is a candid remark about language running out, and it foreshadows her later argument that words are never neutral.

Her actual job, as she describes it, is larger than any title. She creates public ritual for large groups and teaches people to find their voice. "We're hardwired for self-expression in community," she tells Mace, and she believes many cultures have "civilized ourselves away from self-expression." The task is to normalize it again. Self-expression alone in a private room is one thing. Learning to "re-sacralize" through voice, body, movement, sound and ritual, together, inside a shared container, is what she says "changes everything."

How do you borrow from ancient traditions without taking from them?

This is the part of the interview that most readers will want to sit with, because it names a problem the wider spiritual scene has been slow to face. Sterling's answer is reciprocity. "Any culture that we incorporate into our daily lives," she says, "we also must, as sacred activists, give back." She is explicit that extraction without return is what separates real practice from appropriation. "There's a lot of appropriation," she says of the new age world. "There's a lot of stuff that doesn't necessarily go deep and is just kind of taking without giving back."

Her reference point is the Bali Spirit Festival itself, which she praises because it is "deeply entrenched in the community," offering service projects and taking part in "the sustainability of the local culture." For her, a gathering that borrows from a place should also be accountable to it. The principle is simple to state and demanding to live. If you draw on a tradition's depth, you owe something back to the people who hold it, whether that is time, resources, or participation in what sustains them.

Sterling is careful to say that what she does is not the same as taking a tradition's depth. She is "extracting universal truths," she says, and offering them forward. The line she is walking is between learning the principles that recur across many practices and lifting the outward forms of a living culture out of context. It is not a line that can be drawn once and forgotten; it has to be checked again and again through relationship.

Can language itself invoke the sacred?

Mace asks whether there are specific mantras or prayers that listeners could adopt to reclaim this power. Sterling declines to hand out a formula. "I wouldn't hesitate to say this mantra," she says, "that's not really what I do." What she offers instead is an orientation: notice the sacred everywhere, and give it voice. She wants to remind English speakers that their language is sacred too, and she asks how the words people love can be used to invoke.

Her principle is compact and worth quoting in full. "There's this great saying: language creates the world; it describes." Speaking one language, she suggests, describes a different world than speaking another. If that is true, then the question becomes whether we can "let the beauty and the grace of the world move through us and become spoken by us." When we speak that beauty, she says, "we are invokers of the sacred. We're literally calling it forth." The claim is not that words conjure magic on their own. It is that attention, once spoken aloud, shapes what a person notices and what a community comes to expect.

That raises a practical problem: how do you get out of your head long enough for speech like that to arrive? Sterling's answer runs through the body and the voice.

How does singing quiet the monkey mind?

"Singing is key," Sterling says, and she is precise about where to start. Not with words, necessarily, and not with a finished song. She begins "with rhythm and pulse," and with "allowing sounds to move out." She describes a yoga class where people are simply making sounds and exploring their own voice. To her, "the human body is a profound instrument," and most people have never been taught to listen to it or to practice with it.

The sequence she describes is a kind of reclamation. First you let the body make sound. Then you allow yourself to "reclaim our voice as artists, as singers, not just the professionals but all of us." She is emphatic that the capacity is inherent. "We have the inherent yearning to sing to express," she says. Once a person lets that happen, she says, "incredible beauty happens," and the mind's constant commentary tends to fall away. "The monkey mind shuts down," she observes, and she frames this as the reason voice-based practice works: it occupies attention so fully that the chatter has no room.

For readers who have never sung in front of anyone, this is the most accessible teaching in the interview. You do not need a trained instrument to begin. You need rhythm, a willingness to make sound, and a group or a space where the sound can be heard without judgment. Sterling's work with large public rituals, and with the trainings and curricula she has created for communities, is built on that premise.

Where to go from here

Sterling never presents her ideas as a finished doctrine, and the best way to read this conversation is as a set of working questions. Who is your spiritual authority, and what are you willing to take responsibility for when you claim it? Which traditions have shaped you, and what have you given back to them? Which words do you use every day, and what world do they describe? And where in your body is the sound that has been waiting to move?

If the talk leaves you wanting more, watch the full recording on Lilou Mace's channel, which carries Sterling's own description of her work: a teacher, ritual creator and co-creator of the Off the Mat, Into the World programs, who lives in community in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Then start small, the way she suggests. Make a sound. Find a pulse. Let the first word come out before the commentary arrives. The invocation she describes does not begin with a grand gesture. It begins when a person stops waiting for permission and starts to speak.

[0:15] hello my delicious go creators lelu here

[0:17] I'm in Bali amazing beautiful worm Sunny

[0:21] Bali at the Bali uh Spirit Festival here

[0:25] happening end of March beginning of

[0:27] April this is recorded actually the 1st

[0:29] of April and it's going to go all around

[0:31] YouTube I'm sure because of your energy

[0:34] and the wisdom we're going to share in

[0:36] this video suzan it was great to see you

[0:38] performing on the first night and I

[0:41] really look forward discovering your you

[0:43] know what what you went through to be at

[0:46] this this place in your life where you

[0:48] can share the sacred and you can invoke

[0:50] the sacred I'm particularly interested

[0:52] to talk about that topic you know how

[0:53] can we invoke the sacred in our life and

[0:57] um I guess you haven't always been there

[1:00] it's not an easy it's not how how do you

[1:02] get actually to this point where you can

[1:04] and authorize yourself and give yourself

[1:06] permission even to invoke the sacred

[1:10] yeah well it's a great question actually

[1:12] um because I believe that in this moment

[1:14] in time it's important for all of us to

[1:17] um be our own Spiritual Authority and I

[1:21] mean that in the best sense of the word

[1:22] not dissing what has gone before but

[1:25] really um taking a look at the global

[1:28] culture right now because the global

[1:29] culture right now is rising up with a

[1:32] certain Spirit of Awakening that's non-

[1:34] denominational it's not attached to one

[1:36] particular tradition it's actually a

[1:38] global culture and by that I mean Global

[1:40] spiritual culture and we're at this

[1:43] precipice point on the Earth right now

[1:46] you know things uh things are heating up

[1:48] shaking literally and um and so it's

[1:52] important for us to understand that

[1:54] there H has been so much that's come

[1:56] before that is so valuable to us and

[1:58] we're so privileged to have access to it

[2:00] and yet at this moment in time um it's

[2:03] up to us to help create a global culture

[2:06] a global economic culture a global

[2:08] political culture a global artistic

[2:10] culture a global spiritual culture and

[2:13] um luckily that's happening and so I

[2:16] believe that it is it is time for us to

[2:19] really um embibe drink up what has come

[2:22] before and integrate it into the now and

[2:25] evolve it forward and so um that's the

[2:28] way I'm thinking about it at this point

[2:30] I have a long history of studying

[2:32] different Traditions but but not

[2:34] affiliating with anyone and I think

[2:36] that's helpful because it helps me kind

[2:37] of extract hopefully what works from um

[2:41] various different rituals and ceremonies

[2:42] with full respect I don't mean to to be

[2:45] appropriating anyone's um depth but

[2:47] certainly like extracting um Universal

[2:51] truths and then hopefully offering them

[2:53] forward as gifts to what evolves and

[2:56] comes from the Next Generation yeah I I

[2:59] I saw that part of your titles I mean if

[3:02] there's such a thing is Priestess and

[3:04] and and you know there's so many labels

[3:06] out there like some are shamans avatars

[3:09] Priestess goddess you know how how are

[3:12] we why are you called the Priestess and

[3:15] are we all Priestess actually or

[3:17] goddesses or is it something specific

[3:18] because there's also Mystic I mean we're

[3:20] you know I'm wondering about that

[3:22] another great question I would never

[3:23] call myself a shaman nor would I ever

[3:25] call myself a goddess um oh you are come

[3:27] on we are but I would you are too um

[3:30] I I think labels are really interesting

[3:32] and part of the reason I call myself a

[3:33] priestess is because I am actually

[3:34] trained in ritual arts and I've worked

[3:37] with um a couple of very strong

[3:39] traditions in ritual arts for 30 years

[3:42] so I'm actually an elder in one of my

[3:44] traditions and and train people in that

[3:46] so um for lack of a better term I'm

[3:50] interested in especially women the

[3:52] divine feminine rising up and women

[3:54] stepping into positions of spiritual

[3:56] leadership there is no great word for

[3:58] that Priestess is very limiting um and

[4:01] yet it's the only one I found that

[4:03] actually sort of says it um I'm just

[4:06] dedicated to creating ritual and and and

[4:08] trained in creating public ritual for

[4:10] large groups of people and so you know

[4:12] when people ask me what do you do and I

[4:13] say

[4:14] okay the best way I can describe what I

[4:17] do is to my job is to remind us that

[4:19] we're hardwired for self-expression in

[4:22] community and that we have in many

[4:24] cultures civilized ourselves away from

[4:26] self-expression so that's part of what I

[4:28] teach is I teach people to find their

[4:29] voice and speak their truth and live

[4:31] their truth and be unafraid normalizing

[4:33] self-expression because it's inherent in

[4:35] our DNA but to do that in community

[4:38] changes everything like not just in the

[4:40] privacy of my own home but actually to

[4:42] come together as community and learn how

[4:44] to um re sacralize through our voices

[4:47] through our bodies through movement

[4:48] through sound through ritual through the

[4:50] sacred container and that's what I try

[4:51] and do and again I'm not I'm not only

[4:53] coming from one tradition I'm trying to

[4:56] um include many Traditions with respect

[4:58] as I said with respect and and I talked

[5:00] about this at the concert like if we are

[5:03] going to become that Global culture if

[5:04] we are going to borrow from from deep

[5:06] and ancient Traditions there's this idea

[5:08] of reciprocity any any culture that we

[5:11] that we incorporate into our daily lives

[5:13] we also must as sacred activists give

[5:16] back and I think that's a really the

[5:17] reciprocity piece is important because

[5:19] in this new age culture there's a lot of

[5:21] appropriation there's a lot of stuff

[5:23] that it that that doesn't necessarily go

[5:26] deep and is just kind of taking without

[5:28] giving back and that's one of the things

[5:30] about Bal Spirit Festival that's so

[5:31] wonderful is they're deeply entrenched

[5:32] in the community they're offering um

[5:35] service projects um and they're they're

[5:38] they're sort of being they're they're

[5:40] being a part of the the um

[5:43] sustainability of the local culture and

[5:45] that is a crucial piece as far as I'm

[5:47] concerned yeah yeah is there is there is

[5:50] there like

[5:51] specific mantras or prayers or things

[5:55] that we can do in our daily life to kind

[5:57] of invoke that sacred that you would

[5:59] recommend that we can iiz ourselves to

[6:01] do instead of giving kind of this power

[6:03] away like it feels to me like this is

[6:04] time as you said to embody that now yeah

[6:08] um you know again I'm not I'm not I

[6:10] wouldn't I would hesitate to say say

[6:12] this Mantra um that's not really what I

[6:15] do what I will say though is especially

[6:17] for anyone out there who feels like

[6:19] they're they're they're they're they're

[6:21] yearning for connection they're yearning

[6:23] for the sacred to begin to a notice it

[6:26] everywhere and B give voice to it like

[6:28] like giving voice to the sacred and

[6:30] trusting our own language trusting you

[6:32] know one of the things I I try and do

[6:34] even though I sing in Sanskrit sometimes

[6:36] is I'm trying to also remind those of us

[6:38] who speak English like this is a sacred

[6:40] language too how can we bring the sacred

[6:42] back into our languaging how can we use

[6:45] um the the words that we love to invoke

[6:48] right so so there's this great saying

[6:50] language creates the world it describes

[6:54] so when we speak certain languages and I

[6:55] know you're multilingual it we describe

[6:58] a very different world so can we begin

[7:00] to let the the Beauty and the grace of

[7:02] the world move through us and become

[7:04] spoken by us and then when we speak that

[7:06] beauty and Grace then we are invokers of

[7:09] the Sacred we're literally calling it

[7:10] forth

[7:12] yes to do that we have to switch off the

[7:14] mental the the the the this chatter how

[7:17] to go to this place where actually just

[7:19] comes out it pours out of our mouth like

[7:21] what I've heard when you you know you're

[7:23] singing well singing is key you know um

[7:26] for me just not singing words

[7:28] necessarily but starting with Rhythm and

[7:30] pulse and and and allowing sounds to

[7:32] move out like if you took my yoga class

[7:34] for instance people are just ha they're

[7:37] making sounds and and they're just

[7:39] exploring their own voice because to me

[7:42] the the the human body is a is a

[7:44] profound instrument and we have to get

[7:46] used to hearing it and practicing with

[7:48] it and and then singing and then once we

[7:51] allow ourselves to to to reclaim our

[7:53] voice as artists as singers right not

[7:55] just the professionals but all of us the

[7:58] inherent capacity have the inherent

[8:00] yearning we have to sing to express once

[8:03] we let ourselves do that incredible

[8:05] beauty happens and you're right we don't

[8:07] even have to think about it the monkey

[8:08] mind shuts down and and again as we do

[8:10] this in community um there's this

[8:13] there's this lovely small part of the

[8:14] brain that tells us we're separate from

[8:15] each other but when we go into rhythmic

[8:17] entrainment when we go into um what's

[8:19] called sympathetic resonance literally

[8:21] we're we're um syncing up our

[8:23] frequencies and I don't mean that in the

[8:25] in a Airy fairy way I mean that

[8:27] scientifically we could measure that our

[8:29] frequencies begin to find consonants and

[8:31] the very small part of our brain that

[8:32] tells us we're separate measurably goes

[8:34] to sleep so when we sing and dance and

[8:37] move together in community there is a

[8:41] the monkey mind gets an opportunity to

[8:42] shut down and B there's an amplification

[8:45] of the frequency literally and it's

[8:48] measurable do you feel at times you're

[8:50] receiving downloads and your DNA is

[8:53] being upgraded that there's like light

[8:55] more light coming in or what is your

[8:57] feeling of being alive right now on

[8:59] Earth when you open up all those

[9:02] channels uh yeah I mean I guess for me

[9:05] it's uh that's an interesting question I

[9:08] have no idea what's happening with my

[9:09] DNA but I absolutely can say that um I

[9:13] am available for um something greater

[9:17] than myself I'll just say you know and

[9:19] and and I'm guessing when I sing or

[9:21] teach like there's a part of me that's

[9:22] that's fully there there's the unique

[9:25] Suzanne Sterling whatever I've gone

[9:28] through which has been an incredibly

[9:29] challenging but beautiful life all that

[9:32] is mixed in there with hopefully um some

[9:35] greater mystery that is also moving

[9:37] through me and on the great on the in

[9:38] the Great Moments that's the case for

[9:40] sure and I'm just opening myself to it

[9:43] and making sure that I create the right

[9:45] environment for that to happen not just

[9:46] for me but for everyone who's involved

[9:48] in the situation too and and you know I

[9:50] will be honest with you before shows

[9:52] I'll go in and I will actually ground

[9:55] the whole space I will actually try and

[9:56] send Roots down to really deeply connect

[9:58] with the Earth before the show the other

[9:59] night cuz I'm in a place where there's

[10:01] incredible Spirits everywhere I asked

[10:03] permission I was like ancestors of this

[10:05] land may I may I sing these devotional

[10:07] songs here may I invoke you in these

[10:09] prayers um I'm not just going in and

[10:11] being like I'm going to impose my will

[10:12] on this culture and that's the thing

[10:14] I've learned from traveling around the

[10:16] world is when we try and impose

[10:18] ourselves on other cultures it it

[10:20] doesn't work we get smacked right but

[10:22] when we go into other spiritual cultures

[10:25] and we attune ourselves hopefully really

[10:28] well to what's happening not only the

[10:30] human culture but the spiritual culture

[10:31] then we humbly say may I be here may I

[10:35] be in worship here may I um offer my

[10:38] prayers here and and that for me has

[10:41] worked much better in places where the

[10:43] magic is really strong literally you

[10:45] know in places like Bal how do you feel

[10:47] about it and there's all those rituals

[10:49] every day that we see people give and

[10:51] there's a love and there's there seems

[10:53] to be quite a lot of spirit and it's

[10:55] important to have their approval kind of

[10:57] they have quite a loud voice around here

[10:59] these B beings they do and you know I

[11:01] was here many many many years ago 25 or

[11:04] so and and I came here to specifically

[11:06] feel that um almost visceral sense of

[11:09] the spiritual um I felt it in a couple

[11:11] other places in the world India was

[11:13] strong in some places Haiti is very

[11:15] strong spiritual underpinning and um and

[11:19] yeah they're here and they're they're

[11:21] unlike westerners ideas of of Spiritual

[11:24] Beings and again like that's where we go

[11:26] and be like we humbly say okay I don't

[11:28] understand this I'd like to learn I'd

[11:29] like to learn how this works I'd like to

[11:31] learn the belief system I'd like to

[11:32] learn the energies and then I can really

[11:34] begin to um to to sing with them and to

[11:39] to uh perhaps have have a deeper

[11:42] permission to be here and to do this

[11:43] work of of bringing people together

[11:46] that's interesting when you say sing

[11:47] with them I love that so you feel their

[11:49] presence you feel the how how is it all

[11:51] around is it up underneath is it

[11:54] everywhere to me it's everywhere and and

[11:56] again there are different energies right

[11:57] there's there's beings of the underworld

[11:59] there's beings of nature there's being

[12:01] there's Sky beings um uh and and and the

[12:05] balones work in concert with them very

[12:07] strongly very very strongly like they're

[12:09] they're in they're in deep conversation

[12:10] on a daily basis and I because I don't

[12:12] know that I'm not going to try and all

[12:14] of a sudden Worship in that same way but

[12:16] I'm going to be ATT tuned to the fact

[12:17] that I don't know what's happening and

[12:19] I'm going to be ATT tuned to the fact

[12:21] that there are maybe people I can be in

[12:22] conversation with about that are you

[12:24] ever scared of Darker energies or lower

[12:27] energies um how do you deal with that

[12:30] you know again I've had some experiences

[12:32] in the world where um I went into

[12:34] cultures and kind of went to sleep or

[12:36] didn't pay attention to what was told

[12:39] and um and I I do think that

[12:42] um again when we're in other cultures

[12:45] things can happen that are beyond our

[12:46] rational capacity to understand

[12:48] especially westerners who like the

[12:49] scientific Viewpoint it's really

[12:51] challenging for us to be like wow

[12:53] there's something out there and I don't

[12:54] know what it is I've experienced that

[12:56] and so I'm very um careful uh but at the

[12:59] same time also kind of like you know I'm

[13:01] not I don't feel like some entity is

[13:02] going to come and take over my body

[13:04] right I I feel I feel like I have done

[13:06] enough work to to to be to to fill my

[13:09] own skin so to speak right there's no

[13:11] space for anyone else to come in and

[13:13] that's great um but feel happen yeah I

[13:16] think it could happen sure yeah is is

[13:19] there things is there a practice or

[13:21] something that you do in those moment or

[13:22] when you feel negative you know and I'm

[13:24] I'm sure you had moments of depression

[13:26] of very difficult times how did you

[13:28] overcome that to be the light woman that

[13:30] you are now a lot of

[13:33] help you know I mean for me in my

[13:35] darkest moments I I I'm not I'm not

[13:38] ashamed to say it you know I had a

[13:40] somewhat challenging childhood and and

[13:42] part of the reason why I feel so um

[13:44] passionate about helping people find

[13:45] their voice and live their truth and and

[13:48] and step into the sacred is because um I

[13:51] felt like that was missing in my own

[13:52] life um and so I've worked really hard

[13:55] to to to keep myself awake and not

[13:59] spiral into depression but I do

[14:01] sometimes like we all do I mean living

[14:03] on the planet today there's no way we

[14:04] can't be affected by the incredible

[14:06] amounts of slavery and oppression and

[14:08] I've been because of part of what I do

[14:10] also as an activist I've gone to some of

[14:12] the really

[14:13] biggest I've seen a lot of suffering

[14:15] I'll just put it that way I've seen a

[14:17] lot of suffering I've been with sex

[14:18] trafficking victims I've been with um uh

[14:22] people who have have you know nothing

[14:24] and and are and are just trying to find

[14:26] their next meal and so I'm very aware of

[14:29] the fact that there is a lot of

[14:30] suffering and sometimes I tap into it

[14:32] and sometimes it feels overwhelming

[14:34] sometimes I'm like I have no idea

[14:35] whether what I'm doing is making any

[14:36] difference at all and yet I keep going

[14:40] back to that I'm I'm here to serve I'm

[14:42] here to serve and and when in my darkest

[14:44] moments I make that phone call like I

[14:46] pick up the phone and I'm like I call

[14:48] good friends I call my coaches you know

[14:51] I don't do it alone that's for sure I do

[14:54] not do what I do alone and I'm so

[14:55] grateful that I have I mean it's a

[14:57] privilege to be able to do healing

[14:59] transformation work it's a privilege to

[15:00] be here at a festival it's a privilege

[15:02] to to um to have access to all of the

[15:05] spiritual psychological healing

[15:07] modalities that we do like my parents

[15:09] generation they didn't have they didn't

[15:11] have alcoholic synonymous they didn't

[15:12] have like there were some things that

[15:14] would have been great they didn't have

[15:16] them and and so we have such incredible

[15:19] access to these tools and so I am you

[15:21] know I always start every conversation

[15:23] with with people who want to serve the

[15:24] world I'm like let's start with with how

[15:27] absolutely privileged we are to be able

[15:29] to do this and then can we begin to

[15:31] offer it out to others who perhaps don't

[15:33] have access to it that's that to me um

[15:36] shifts all of my self-pity and the and

[15:38] the depression and the insanity of my

[15:41] mind going why am I here what am I doing

[15:43] and then I I drop in like okay I know

[15:45] there's a few things I'm here to do one

[15:46] of them is sing another one is create

[15:48] ritual another one is just serve you

[15:50] know serve the suffering that's I I'm

[15:52] dedicated to that that's why I came

[15:55] you've created many albums and many

[15:57] award-winning albums where you at right

[15:59] now with your music and how is it

[16:01] evolving what are you up to um I have

[16:05] done a lot of yoga music in the last

[16:07] like 10 years and uh I'm just starting a

[16:10] dance album because I used to do

[16:11] electronic dance music with a sort of

[16:13] like a spiritual bent to it and so I'm

[16:15] just about to make a new album and I'm

[16:17] feeling into what that what I want that

[16:19] to be and finding the right producers to

[16:21] do that with me and so I'm kind of

[16:23] daunted and excited about it at the same

[16:25] time yeah yeah all open to great things

[16:28] to happen who knows what will happen who

[16:30] knows what will come and um you know

[16:32] lots of I'm still continuing to travel I

[16:34] do lots of festivals like this all over

[16:36] the world and get to I've watched this

[16:38] this Festival culture evolve over the

[16:40] last 25 years it's been fascinating cuz

[16:43] when you know when I started You' been

[16:44] evolved since the beginning no not with

[16:45] B Spirit but I've been doing festivals

[16:48] for 25 years and and in the beginning

[16:50] there were music festivals with a little

[16:51] transformation a little yoga um a lot of

[16:55] drugs and and it's been interesting to

[16:57] watch it shift and now it's more like yo

[16:59] music festivals right so there there's

[17:01] this there's this there's this movement

[17:03] towards transformation and I actually

[17:05] think people even though it's a crazy

[17:07] environment I think people actually are

[17:08] learning things and growing and evolving

[17:10] and there's a culture that's growing out

[17:12] of these cultures that um that is that

[17:15] is moving and shaking in some really

[17:17] interesting ways innovating yeah you

[17:19] know the ecstatic Dance I mean that's

[17:21] becoming really really big all around

[17:23] the world and that doesn't involve drugs

[17:25] or alcohol and it's just like liberating

[17:27] H you do ecstatic

[17:29] right too so could you just tell us more

[17:32] about that I mean for me it's more like

[17:33] when we sing when we go into these

[17:36] states of allowing ourselves to be fully

[17:37] expressed it's it's it's better than any

[17:40] drug it's just pure joy and and again

[17:43] you know for many people there's like a

[17:44] there's like like a Wall of Resistance

[17:46] and there's the part of themsel that

[17:47] told themselves they can't do it and

[17:49] there's the part of themselves that's

[17:50] scared and vulnerable and I get all that

[17:52] but but just beyond that Wall of

[17:54] Resistance my job is to push people out

[17:56] of their comfort zone into that zone and

[17:58] get them in their body is expressing and

[18:00] when they do it's just pure Bliss pure

[18:02] joy and to me that is Magic that is

[18:05] ritual right and one of my favorite

[18:08] definitions of ritual that one of my

[18:09] teachers taught me is it's the art of

[18:11] changing Consciousness at will right so

[18:13] you don't need to have an external

[18:14] substance you need this is all we need

[18:17] to reach high states of connectivity to

[18:20] you know each other ourselves the the

[18:22] imminent Divine that's in all things and

[18:24] the great mystery like that's all we

[18:25] need is just singing dancing moving

[18:27] ritual allowing ourselves to be in that

[18:30] um in that state together in community

[18:33] that's a big part in community in

[18:35] community and connected to the Earth um

[18:37] Mother Earth in all elements not just up

[18:39] there that's right it's not just about

[18:41] the sky it's not just about the sky it's

[18:43] about us being here embodied fully um

[18:47] grounded healthy fully sexual fully

[18:50] confident fully loving fully expressed

[18:54] listening to our intuition connected

[18:55] like it's all it's the whole it's the

[18:57] whole system and when people when people

[19:00] talk to me about like I just want to

[19:01] ascend I'm I'm kind of like why this is

[19:04] this is bliss like if we are really

[19:06] embodied if we're really I had a yoga

[19:08] teacher who said you know why is

[19:09] everyone trying to get out of their

[19:10] bodies this is let's get into our bodies

[19:12] and let's descend yeah into the uh the

[19:15] the the the matter yes because it's it

[19:17] can be fully ecstatic amazing thank you

[19:20] Susan thank you so much for this

Frequently Asked Questions

Suzanne Sterling says invoking the sacred begins with noticing it everywhere and giving it voice. She argues that speaking the beauty and grace of the world aloud makes you a caller of the sacred, because language shapes the world we describe.
Sterling says she is trained in ritual arts, has worked with strong traditions for about thirty years, and is an elder in one of them. She admits that priestess is a limiting word, but she says it is the only one she found that describes her work of creating public ritual and teaching people to find their voice.
Sterling recommends extracting universal truths with full respect and practicing reciprocity, meaning giving back to the community whose traditions you draw on. She contrasts this with new age appropriation, which takes without returning anything.
No, according to Sterling. She suggests starting with rhythm and pulse and letting sounds move out, as in the yoga classes where people simply explore their own voice. She believes the inherent capacity to sing exists in everyone, not only professionals.
Sterling observes that once people let themselves sing or make sound, the monkey mind shuts down because voice absorbs attention completely. She describes this as the moment when incredible beauty happens without the usual mental chatter.
Sterling says that in the current moment, people are rising into a non-denominational spiritual awakening and must each take responsibility for their spiritual life. She means this in the best sense: not rejecting what came before, but integrating and evolving it.
