Who Is Jim Gelcer? Life, Work, and Legacy

Origins in Cape Town and Toronto

Jim Gelcer was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1961, and moved to Toronto in 1968. Toronto remains his base. Those two places, one the city of his birth and the other the city where he grew up and built his career, are the geographic poles of his story. They surface later in the title of a record, Cape Town to Kolkata, which links his South African origins to the Indian devotional tradition he took up as an adult.

His path began in jazz, not yoga. He studied drums, vibraphone, arranging and improvisation at the Eastman School of Music in 1980, then jazz at York University in 1984. From there he worked as a professional musician: a drummer, singer, composer, songwriter and producer in the Canadian scene.

A Working Musician's Early Career

Before kirtan, Gelcer had a full career. He performed, recorded and toured with Lee Aaron and with the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and he worked with Paul Hoffert, George Koller, Lorne Lofsky, Don Thompson and Guido Basso, among others. Early on he composed for film and television, including music for The Journal on CBC.

That background matters. It gave him a command of harmony, arrangement and improvisation, and a sense of how to serve a song. Those skills are the foundation of what came later.

The Turning Point

Gelcer studied Sivananda Yoga, and the decisive moment came at the Sivananda Ashram in the Laurentian Mountains, where he was invited to chant in the temple. The invitation led him toward kirtan, the call-and-response devotional music of India, and he became committed to it.

In 2006 he completed yoga teacher training at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. He began leading kirtan soon afterward. For a musician with decades of professional experience, this was less a break than a redirection. The same ears and hands were now placed in service of Sanskrit mantra and bhakti, the path of devotion.

What He Is Known For

Gelcer is known for blending traditional kirtan with jazz, R&B and rock. His distinction is the seriousness of the musicianship behind that blend. Many kirtan leaders arrive through yoga first and music second. Gelcer arrived through years of professional work and formal study, and the arrangements show it in their harmonic movement and their sense of space.

The blend is also candid. He does not present his kirtan as an untouched ancient form. He acknowledges the jazz and soul in it while treating the Sanskrit texts with respect. His work sits within the Sivananda tradition, which treats asana, breath, meditation and devotion as integrated paths. He teaches alongside his music, and he positions himself as a guide and companion rather than a guru.

Major Recordings

His debut kirtan album, Bhagavan, came out in 2010. Yoga Chicago magazine called him "the perfect bhakti singer." It remains the clearest entry point to his sound: clear Sanskrit singing, live instrumentation, and a jazz sensibility that never overcomplicates the chant.

Bhakti Groove Machine followed in 2013, recorded with producer Ben Leinbach. It is more polished and rhythmically assured, a step further into the groove-oriented side of his approach.

His other recordings include:

  • Going Om, with Donald Quan
  • Jim and Paul play Glenn and Ludwig, with Paul Hoffert and George Koller
  • Cape Town to Kolkata (2019)
  • Forgiveness, with David Vito Gregoli
  • Albums made with Hans Christian

His most recent full-length album, Quiet Expanse, was released in July 2025. It is slow and spacious, content to stay with a single phrase or mantra and let repetition do its work.

Festivals, Stages and Boards

Gelcer has performed at yoga studios, temples and festivals such as Bhaktifest. From 2012 to 2017 he served as musical director of Shri Fest, shaping the music for an annual gathering of the North American kirtan community. He also leads retreats at Sivananda Bahamas and Kripalu, residential settings where chanting, practice and teaching unfold over days rather than hours.

Outside music and yoga, he has served on arts boards, including the Glenn Gould Foundation as Fundraising Chair. The role fits a musician who has spent his life inside the Canadian arts community and who connects with Gould's legacy, a link also visible in the Hoffert and Koller album title.

The Current Chapter

Today Gelcer's work has two main strands. The first is teaching: he offers a daily yoga class on Insight Timer, which gives listeners and students around the world direct access to his voice, pacing and presence without the mediation of a studio recording.

The second is a steady stream of new music. Through 2024 and 2025 he released singles built around single themes: "Healing," "Hope," "Compassion," "Resilience," "Forgiveness," "Letting Go," "Authenticity" and "Warrior Spirit." Earlier singles show the same engagement with the world around him. "Reconcile" appeared in 2020, "Do Androids Dream of Savasana" in 2021 and "As Things Unfold" in 2023. "Mariupol," from 2022, responded directly to the war in Ukraine. Taken together, the releases suggest an artist using devotional music to address grief, fragmentation and the question of how to stay compassionate through difficult times, rather than as an escape.

Why He Matters

Gelcer's audience is mostly people already inside the yoga and kirtan world: students in studios, retreat participants, festival-goers and daily online practitioners. His work also speaks to listeners who want devotional music with real musical craft and a quieter register. It is not aimed at those seeking ecstatic, high-energy call-and-response, or at those who want the spiritual content stripped out. He is explicit about mantra and meaning.

His significance lies in a particular kind of integrity. A career spent in session rooms, on tour and in television studios did not stand in the way of a devotional life, and the two have informed each other. For Western kirtan, which is sometimes accused of either dilution or exoticism, he offers a third approach: serious musicianship in service of a tradition he takes seriously, presented plainly and without a claim to authority beyond the practice itself.
