Where "Healing" Sits in Jim Gelcer's Arc

"Healing" arrived on May 23, 2025, as a single with one track. It belongs to a run of short, thematic releases that Jim Gelcer has put out across 2024 and 2025, a sequence that also includes "Hope," "Compassion," and "Letting Go." Those titles read like a vocabulary of inner work, and "Healing" may be the plainest of them.

Gelcer's path to this point is unusual. Born in Cape Town and raised in Toronto from 1968, he studied drums, vibraphone, arranging and improvisation at the Eastman School of Music, then jazz at York University. He worked as a professional musician, toured with Lee Aaron and the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and composed for film and television, including CBC's The Journal. Kirtan came later, after an invitation to chant in the temple at the Sivananda Ashram in the Laurentian Mountains. "Healing" is the work of someone who has spent years learning how to make a single devotional idea feel unhurried.

Sonic Character

Gelcer's voice is warm and precise, an alto that sits in the mid-register. It does not reach for display. What matters is the clarity of the text and the sincerity behind it. Harmonium is the usual center of his kirtan, and his jazz training shows in the harmonic choices around it: chord voicings that move in unexpected but never jarring ways, and room for drums or keyboards to breathe.

The pacing is the defining feature. His recent singles, "Healing" among them, move at a meditation pace and may hold a single phrase for minutes. The effect is to invite you into repetition rather than carry you through it. There are no stadium drums and no synth swells, and no call-and-response engineered to lift a crowd. The mood is closer to chamber music: intimate, conversational and musically literate without being showy.

The One Track

Because this is a single, there are no track titles to choose among, and I won't invent any. "Healing" is the whole album, and it is best treated as one sustained gesture.

What makes it land is restraint. Gelcer is comfortable letting a mantra or phrase stand without ornament, a habit that comes from improvisational training. A jazz musician learns that silence and sparse playing carry weight, and here that instinct serves devotion. The title also sets an intention before a note sounds. You come to the piece already knowing what it is for, which suits morning routines and meditation, the contexts for which his recent singles seem designed.

Place in the Tradition

Gelcer works within the bhakti tradition of devotional chanting, shaped by the Sivananda Yoga path he studied and by his teacher training at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. Sivananda practice treats asana, pranayama, meditation and devotion as integrated, and his kirtan operates in that frame, closer to meditation and self-inquiry than to entertainment.

He is also candid about the blend. His kirtan draws on jazz, R&B and rock, and he does not present the result as a pure or untouched tradition. "Healing" is not ambient music in the strict sense, because the voice and Sanskrit-rooted devotional practice stay present, but it shares ambient music's patience. It sits between a kirtan session and a quiet sitting practice.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This is for listeners who want devotion without spectacle. If you prefer ecstatic, high-energy kirtan with a charismatic leader, the understated approach here may feel sparse. If you want purely instrumental background music, the vocal presence will ask more of you than that.

The best fit is someone in a period of recovery or transition: grief, burnout, an illness, a rough stretch that calls for gentleness rather than motivation. It also suits yoga and meditation practitioners who want a short, thematic piece to anchor a session, and listeners who value musicianship and want to hear what a trained jazz player does with a mantra.

Close Listening Recommendation

Listen alone, in the evening or first thing in the morning, with headphones or a quiet room. Put the phone down. Let the first minutes pass without waiting for something to happen, since the point is the sinking in, not the arrival. Try following the voice for the first pass, then the harmony underneath it on a second.

If you have a practice, such as seated meditation, gentle stretching or breathwork, let the piece frame it. The single-track format makes this easy: press play, settle, and let the one idea in the title do its work.
