The Single Best Entry Point: Kirtan Alive (2012)

Start with Kirtan Alive, the first album from Edo & Jo and one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. It sets out the core of their sound: mantra carried by clean, song-based arrangements. That makes chanting approachable even if you have never sat in a kirtan circle.

Listen to it as a complete record rather than skipping to single tracks. The pacing is the point. The album shows how Edo & Jo build repetition into something meditative, and that effect only works if you let it unfold in order.

If you want to test the aesthetic before buying, the official YouTube channel at youtube.com/@edoandjo is a practical place to hear the material. The official site, edoandjo.com, is the place to confirm how to get the albums. Streaming availability on Spotify or Apple Music isn't confirmed, so check before assuming.

The Next Places to Go

Bliss. The second album extends the approach of the debut, so it is the logical next listen if Kirtan Alive connects with you.

Chakra Meditation. This is the most purposeful record in the catalogue, built around the chakra system. Go here when you want music for stillness and inner focus rather than song-to-song listening.

The third album. It draws on Sound Yoga (Nada Yoga) and shares a mantra meditation practice Edo & Jo were initiated into by their teacher, Sakthi Amma. It is the most explicit statement of their spiritual lineage, and it rewards listeners who already have some comfort with chant. The title isn't recorded in the information available here, so check the official site for the full discography.

If you are building a small collection, Kirtan Alive and Chakra Meditation cover the core of the sound.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect Eastern mantra blended with Western pop songcraft. Edo & Jo's site describes the result as both soothing and uplifting. Kirtan is built on call-and-response repetition, so the mantra is the structural center, not a verse-chorus hook. The overall feel is restraint over spectacle: chanted mantra, pop-influenced melody and clear devotional intent.

This isn't background ambience. The mantra is present and in focus. And it isn't high-BPM or dance-floor music; it is measured and meditative.

Edo & Jo are no longer a working partnership. Jo Mall Kahn passed away in September 2015, shortly after a cancer diagnosis, and touring ended around then. There are no upcoming shows. What remains is the recordings, archived material and the charity A Sound Life, which Edo & Jo co-founded to bring music and yoga free of charge to people in health care and underprivileged communities.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is purely traditional kirtan." Edo & Jo came to the form as songwriters. Edo is an APRA award-winning songwriter who was previously signed to Virgin/EMI with the rock bands Gelbison and Kahn Brothers. Jo was a classically trained musician and qualified yoga teacher. The Western pop framing is deliberate, and purists who want long, unadorned call-and-response may find it polished.

"The albums are standalone products." Edo & Jo's Sound Yoga workshops combined asana, mantra, chakra meditation and sound relaxation, and the records work as companions to that wider practice.

"The albums will teach me the philosophy." They are songs, not lectures. If you want the Sanskrit-based context of bhakti and Nada Yoga, you'll need independent reading.

"I should start with the deepest material." The third album and its initiated practice are more demanding. Begin with the first record.

When This Work Lands Hardest

This music suits people looking for soothing, devotional listening: for a yoga practice, for ceremony, or for quiet evenings. It tends to land when you want something to slow down to rather than something to push you along. It also suits the closing portion of a home yoga session, when the body is still and the mind is ready for absorption. Kirtan Alive works well for group settings because kirtan is communal. And for listeners who find the story of Jo's life and legacy meaningful, the music carries added weight.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Preview a few videos on the YouTube channel to check the aesthetic suits you.

Day 2: Listen to Kirtan Alive start to finish, undistracted.

Day 3: Listen to it again, this time chanting along quietly. Kirtan is participatory, not performed.

Day 4: Play Kirtan Alive during a short yoga session or quiet sit.

Day 5: Move to Bliss, again as a complete record.

Day 6: Use Chakra Meditation for a stillness session, seated and eyes closed.

Day 7: Reflect on which record held you most. If you're drawn toward the meditative end, explore the third album via the official site, and consider learning about A Sound Life.
