The Recording Arc

Edo & Jo's recorded story begins in 2012 with Kirtan Alive, a debut that became one of Australia's best-selling kirtan CDs. It was followed by Bliss and Chakra Meditation. The bio also describes a third album drawing on Sound Yoga (Nada Yoga) and the mantra meditation practice the duo was initiated into by their teacher, Sakthi Amma. The records available to me do not give that album's title, so I have not assigned it to any entry below. The path runs from approachable, song-shaped chanting toward ever more meditative ground. That shape fits a duo who blended Eastern mantra with Western pop, and whose site calls the result both soothing and uplifting.

Edo Kahn came from rock and an APRA-winning songwriting career. Jo Mall Kahn brought classical training and a yoga teacher's qualification. Together they toured from 2008 to 2015, and Jo passed away in September 2015. The catalogue is a closed, complete body of work, and the charity A Sound Life carries its spirit forward.

A practical note: no cover images or track listings were available, so this guide has no artwork. Where I would normally name a track, I point you to the album's opening and to the official YouTube channel for previews.

Kirtan Alive

Year: 2012

This is the doorway. Kirtan Alive carries mantra on clean, song-based arrangements, so chanting feels welcoming even if you have never sat in a kirtan circle. The pop craft shows in melody that lingers, while repetition does the quiet work of settling the mind. Kirtan is call-and-response by nature, and the record is made to be joined as much as heard.

In the arc, this is the foundation. It carries Edo's songwriting pedigree and Jo's musical discipline into devotional territory, and its commercial success gave the duo a platform.

Where to drop in first: Track titles are not documented in the records I have, so begin at the opening and let the album's pacing guide you. It is best heard as a complete record, since the sequencing is what turns repetition into meditation.

Bliss

Year: around the years following 2012 (exact year not recorded)

Bliss extends the debut's approach to devotional song. Expect the same marriage of mantra and accessible melody, with the uplifting side of the duo's "soothing and uplifting" description coming forward. It is a natural second listen for anyone who connected with Kirtan Alive, and it rewards a relaxed, repeated play more than close analysis.

Within the arc, it is the consolidation: the sound is established, and Bliss lives in it with confidence rather than reinventing it. It also sits in the years when the duo held monthly residencies at Ubud Yoga Barn in Bali, from 2012 to 2014.

Where to drop in first: Specific track titles are not recorded, so start from the beginning. If you want a preview before committing, the official channel at youtube.com/@edoandjo is the best place to sample the mood.

Chakra Meditation

Year: around the mid-2010s (exact year not recorded)

The most purposeful record in the catalogue, Chakra Meditation is built around the chakra system and made for stillness and inner focus. Where the earlier albums invite you to sing along, this one invites you to settle. The mantra remains the centre, but the energy turns inward, closer to the sound relaxation and chakra meditation of the duo's Sound Yoga workshops.

In the arc, it marks the move from song toward practice, the point where the albums become companions to a discipline. Listeners comfortable with chant will find it deepens what the first two began.

Where to drop in first: Track titles are not documented in the records I have. Play it from the start at the end of a yoga session, when the body is still and the mind is ready to listen.

If you only listen to one…

  • Devotional: Kirtan Alive. It is the heart of the bhakti tradition in their work: repeated names, communal call-and-response, and song-shaped warmth.
  • Contemplative: Chakra Meditation. Choose it for quiet evenings, journaling or the closing minutes of a practice.
  • Energetic: Bliss. This is the brightest end of their range. It is uplifting rather than dance-floor driven, since nothing in their catalogue is high-BPM.
  • Healing: Chakra Meditation, played slowly and without distraction. It pairs well with the spirit of A Sound Life, the charity that brings music and yoga free of charge to people in health care and underprivileged communities.
