A Duo Built Around Mantra

Deva Premal & Miten are a chant duo who describe their work as music, mantras, and meditations. Their YouTube channel calls them Grammy-nominated and the world's leading chant artists. What distinguishes them within the broader kirtan world is a matter of temperament. Where much contemporary kirtan leans on rhythm, call-and-response, and communal exuberance, their approach is restrained and meditative. The mantra itself, its Sanskrit sounds, its meaning, and its effect on the listener, stays at the center.

Origins and the Turning Point

The sources available for this profile don't document their early lives, hometowns, or the moment that set them on this path. Rather than guess, it is more honest to start where the record is firm: with the work. Over time, they have built a body of music, writing, teaching, and service organized around mantra, and the Gayatri Mantra in particular. The cohesion of that work suggests a long and deliberate commitment, even if the story of how it began isn't something we can responsibly tell here.

What They're Known For

Their core contribution is treating mantra as both music and practice. Their recordings emphasize clear Sanskrit articulation, slow pacing, and space. The instrumentation on their central studio work is sparse, with harmonium and voice at the foreground. The effect is closer to guided contemplation than to concert performance, and it asks for attentive listening rather than background accompaniment.

That seriousness extends to how they present mantra. Their website offers a mantra book, lyrics and chords, and a course on exploring mantras. Individual mantras are introduced with attention to meaning and pronunciation. They are not only performers of this repertoire but also its students and explainers, which gives their work a pedagogical dimension that many recording artists in the genre don't pursue.

Major Works and Projects

Recordings. Mantralove (2013) is the album most often recommended as an entry point, valued for its unified arc and its restrained sound. They also appear on two 2012 compilations, Putumayo Presents World Yoga and Omega Ecstatic Chant, which place their music alongside other chant and yoga-oriented artists.

Books. They have written In the Garden of the Mystic and NO WATER NO MOON: A Pilgrimage. Alongside these is their practical mantra book, which serves as a working companion for those studying the chants.

The Gayatri Mantra and water. Their site includes pages on the effect of the Gayatri Mantra on water, an unusual meeting of scientific curiosity and devotional practice. How one weighs such material is a personal matter, but it shows an inclination to ask questions about mantra rather than simply perform it.

Medicine of Mantra. This project, with its healing exercises, frames mantra as something to be used, not just heard. Their site carries endorsements from medical professionals and yoga instructors, which signals the audiences who have taken an interest.

The Gayatri Fund. Described on their site as "Nepal-Compassion In Action," the fund extends the work beyond music and teaching into service.

The band. For live performance, they appear with the Deva Premal & Miten Band. Several collaborators have shaped that sound. Manose Singh, a Nepalese bansuri flutist born in Boudhanath in 1979, has been a band member since 2004. Joby Baker, a Grammy-nominated Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist (bass, percussion, keyboards, vocals), has co-produced with them since 2013. Spencer Cozens, a UK keyboardist known for jazz-inflected work with John Martyn and Joan Armatrading, has toured with them since 2015. The full band widens the palette beyond the harmonium-and-voice intimacy of the studio recordings, while the emphasis on clarity carries through.

The Current Chapter

Today the work spreads across several formats. The Gayatri Sangha is an online community with satsang circles, gatherings built around shared chanting and reflection. It lets students engage with the practice regardless of where they live, and it pairs a digital community with in-person events.

Live dates continue. An Australian tour is underway this month, with shows at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne (October 26), the Enmore Theatre in Sydney (October 28), and a regional date in Mullumbimby (October 30). Retreats at Blue Spirit Costa Rica in Nosara are scheduled from November 2026 through April 2027. Their website, devapremalmiten.com, is the main place to find current dates, releases, and course information, and their YouTube channel offers performances and teachings free of charge.

Cultural Significance

Why do they matter? In part, because they represent a particular path through a genre that has grown popular in yoga studios and wellness spaces. Kirtan is often associated with communal energy, and there is much to love in that. Deva Premal & Miten offer a different register: quiet, exacting, and inward. For listeners who find big-room chanting overwhelming, or who want to understand what they are singing, this approach opens a door.

They reach several overlapping audiences: yoga practitioners looking for music suited to stillness, meditators drawn to mantra, readers interested in their books, and people curious about whether sound can play a role in wellbeing. The compilations and the yoga world have given them reach beyond the dedicated chant community, while the course, the sangha, and the retreats give committed students somewhere to go deeper.

It is worth being clear about the limits of what can be said. Their sources do not name a guru or formal lineage, and this profile assigns none. Their work engages the Vedic tradition, and the Gayatri Mantra is a Vedic invocation, but a topic is not a credential, and the duo's own materials are the best guide to how they understand their path. Nor will everyone respond to the music. Listeners who want percussion, call-and-response, and collective ecstasy may find it austere. Those who want a slower, more deliberate encounter with mantra may find exactly what they were looking for.

What endures is a consistent artistic and practical vision: mantra offered with care, explained with patience, and extended outward through teaching, community, and service. In a field that often prizes atmosphere over substance, that steadiness is their most distinctive quality.
