Where to Start with Deva Premal & Miten: A Beginner's Guide

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with the album Mantralove (2013). It is a full album with a consistent arc rather than a compilation, and it shows the core of their sound: precisely pronounced Sanskrit, harmonium, and voice. Listen to it start to finish, with headphones or a quiet room, rather than as background music.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. The mantra library on their site (devapremalmiten.com). It is free and includes lyrics, chords, and explorations of individual mantras covering meaning and pronunciation. Read along while you play Mantralove.

2. Their YouTube channel (@DevaPremalMiten). Here you can see and hear them perform before buying anything. It is also where you will notice how much space they leave between phrases.

3. The compilations and the books. Putumayo Presents World Yoga and Omega Ecstatic Chant (both 2012) place them alongside other artists, which makes their restraint easier to hear. When you want the personal story behind the music, read In the Garden of the Mystic or No Water No Moon: A Pilgrimage.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect slow pacing, a clean voice, harmonium as the foundation, and little to no percussion. There is silence and sustained tone, and each syllable of Sanskrit is given room. The mood is serious and contemplative rather than exuberant. Live, they perform with the Deva Premal & Miten Band, whose collaborators include bansuri flutist Manose Singh and keyboardist Spencer Cozens, so the concert sound is fuller than the album's.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is high-energy kirtan." It isn't. If you want drums, handclaps, and group euphoria, this will feel austere. Their approach is meditative.

"It's background music." The albums reward active listening. Treated as wallpaper, they lose most of their effect.

"It's only devotional performance." They present mantra as medicine and as a practice. Their site has a Medicine of Mantra project and healing exercises, and they have explored the effect of the Gayatri Mantra on water.

"I need to know Sanskrit first." You don't. The lyrics and the mantra explorations are there to teach you.

"They're just musicians." They also teach. They offer a mantra course and a mantra book, run the Gayatri Sangha online community with satsang circles, and support the Gayatri Fund in Nepal.

When This Work Lands Hardest

This work tends to land when you want stillness more than stimulation. It suits a morning practice, since the Gayatri Mantra is traditionally chanted at dawn. It also suits periods when you are looking for a daily meditation habit, or when you want a mantra with a clear meaning to sit with. If you are in a loud, high-output stretch of life, the sparseness can come as relief. If you want a party, look elsewhere.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Play Mantralove straight through, with no multitasking. Note which track holds your attention.

Day 2: Open the mantra library and read the lyrics and meaning for that track. Listen again with the text in front of you.

Day 3: Watch a performance on their YouTube channel. Notice the pacing, the pauses, and how the voice and harmonium interact.

Day 4: Chant along quietly for ten minutes, following the lyrics. Don't worry about perfection. Aim for clear syllables.

Day 5: Try the same practice in the morning, ideally near sunrise, with the Gayatri Mantra.

Day 6: Explore the Medicine of Mantra pages and try one of the healing exercises.

Day 7: Sample a compilation track from Putumayo Presents World Yoga or Omega Ecstatic Chant, then decide what's next. Options include a book, the mantra course, a Gayatri Sangha satsang circle, or a live show. Australian dates are set for late October 2026 (Melbourne's Palais Theatre on October 26, Sydney's Enmore Theatre on October 28, and Mullumbimby on October 30). Retreats at Blue Spirit Costa Rica run from November 2026 through April 2027.
