Where This Single Sits in Adam Bauer's Arc

Adam Bauer came to his own voice by a long road through other people's music. He played bass for years with Krishna Das and later with Shyamdas, and he credits both with nourishing his love of sacred sound and the yoga of devotion. His three albums trace the step from sideman to leader: Shyam Lila (2014, Mantralogy Records), a personal tribute to Shyamdas; Wonderville (2017), new chants and one cover, produced with Ben Leinbach; and Return to the Sacred (2020), recorded in India and the USA with musicians from both countries. A newer album, Life + Death, follows these.

Tulsi Hanuman Chalisa, released June 14, 2024, is a single with one track. It is not a new chapter so much as a focused offering: one text, one devotional act. For a kirtan leader whose work centers on bhakti, the Hanuman Chalisa is a natural thing to set down in full. It is a listening experience built around a single long devotional recitation rather than a collection of songs.

Sonic Character

Bauer leads with a warm baritone and harmonium, and that pairing defines his approach. The style is gentle and grounded. Nothing in his approach suggests spectacle; the voice sits low and unhurried, and the harmonium supplies the sustained, breathing bed that has long anchored kirtan in India and the West.

Expect the qualities his live kirtan and satsang work is known for: warmth over intensity, steadiness over drama. His bass-playing history is worth keeping in mind as you listen. Players who come up on bass tend to think about foundation, about what holds a groove in place so others can float above it. That sensibility often shows in a leader's phrasing and sense of pulse, even when the instrument in hand is a harmonium. I can't point you to specific accompanying musicians or production credits for this release, because none are listed in the information available, so the best approach is to let the credits on the streaming page tell you who else is present.

The mood is devotional in the plainest sense: sincere, inward, and welcoming rather than performative.

The Track Worth Naming

There is only one: "Tulsi Hanuman Chalisa."

The Chalisa is a forty-verse hymn to Hanuman, traditionally attributed to the poet-saint Tulsidas, and the title nods to that lineage. What makes a full rendition land is the cumulative effect. A single verse is a prayer; forty in succession become a kind of walking meditation. Listen for how Bauer's baritone settles into the repeating melodic shape and lets the text do the work. The pleasure is in the repetition, where small shifts in breath, weight and emphasis begin to feel significant.

Treat it as one continuous piece rather than a track to sample. The first minutes may feel simple. Stay with it, and the simplicity turns into spaciousness.

Place in the Tradition

This sits squarely in bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and more specifically in the Western kirtan scene that Krishna Das helped bring to wide audiences and that Shyamdas carried with his own deep immersion in Braj and Krishna bhakti. Bauer is a direct inheritor of both, having spent years on stage beside them.

The Hanuman Chalisa has a special place in that world. It is recited for strength, protection and courage, and for the humility of service that Hanuman embodies. Many practitioners know it by heart. Bauer's version belongs less to ambient music than to the devotional tradition itself: it is meant to be sung along with, absorbed, or used as a sacred sound backdrop, though its calm texture will serve a quiet room well too.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This will mean the most to listeners who already have a relationship with the Chalisa, whether through daily recitation, a yoga community, or a kirtan circle, and who want a warm, unhurried version to practice with. It also suits newcomers who find high-energy kirtan overwhelming and want a gentler doorway.

Life moment matters here. The hymn's themes of strength, protection and steadiness make it a good companion for transitions: a hard week, a recovery period, a morning when you need to gather yourself. Those who have followed Bauer since Shyam Lila will hear a familiar voice applied to one of the tradition's most beloved texts.

How to Listen

Give it an unbroken stretch of time and let it run without skipping. Evening works well, when the day's noise has dropped, but early morning is equally traditional for this text.

Headphones will bring out the texture of the harmonium and the grain of the baritone. If you want to practice, sit with the lyrics in front of you and sing quietly beneath the recording; the pacing is gentle enough to follow. If you prefer to simply listen, dim the lights, let your breathing slow, and treat the whole piece as a single act of attention. Come back to it on consecutive days, as the Chalisa is traditionally approached, and notice what changes in you rather than in the music.
