A Singer in the Tradition of Devotion

Adam Bauer is a singer, coach and facilitator who travels the world sharing kirtan, healing touch, the I Ching and transformational conversation. Described in the simplest terms, he is a musician. Yet that word only partly captures a body of work that moves between the concert space, the consultation room and the retreat center. At the center of it all is bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and a conviction that sound can be a doorway into something more honest and more connected than ordinary speech allows.

He leads his sessions with a warm baritone voice and a harmonium, in a manner that is gentle and grounded. Those who describe his work tend to return to the same qualities: patience, warmth, and an absence of spectacle. In his own words: "I consider music and singing to be among the most intimate ways we can share and express ourselves and connect with others."

Early Influences and the Apprenticeship of the Bass

Public documentation of Bauer's childhood and hometown is sparse, and it would be a disservice to fill that gap with guesswork. What is documented is the first of two long-running threads in his life. At sixteen, he was introduced to the I Ching by his father. He has practiced it ever since.

The I Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes, is a system of hexagrams traditionally consulted for reflection and guidance. For Bauer it became a lifelong companion rather than a passing curiosity, and eventually a discipline he would teach. That a father would hand a teenager such a book, and that the teenager would keep returning to it for decades, says something about the temperament that later shaped his music: an interest in contemplation, symbol, and the examined life.

The Turning Point: Years Beside Two Teachers

The second thread is musical, and it runs through two of the most significant figures in Western kirtan and bhakti. For years, Bauer played bass with Krishna Das, widely regarded as a pioneer of kirtan in the West. He later played bass with Shyamdas, the Bhakti Yoga teacher.

The bass is a revealing instrument for this kind of apprenticeship. It sits beneath the melody, holding the ground while others lead. In the call-and-response world of kirtan, where the music exists to support the participation of a room, this is a form of listening as much as playing. By his own account, both teachers deepened his love of sacred sound and the yoga of devotion. The path from sideman to bandleader, from supporting the chant to leading it with his own voice and harmonium, is the turning point that defines his current work.

Core Contribution

What Bauer is known for is the integration of several practices that are often kept separate. A kirtan evening, an I Ching reading, a session of healing touch and a coaching conversation might seem to belong to different worlds. In his hands they share a common purpose: creating conditions in which people can meet themselves and one another more intimately.

His I Ching work is substantial in its own right. He has taught it for twenty-five years, in workshops, private consultations and online courses. Alongside his kirtan and bhakti programs, he offers life coaching and I Ching sessions, in person and online, for groups and individuals. The coaching and the music inform one another. Both rely on attentive presence, on asking and listening rather than pronouncing.

Recordings

Bauer's solo discography traces a steady deepening of his practice.

Shyam Lila (2014, Mantralogy Records) was his first solo kirtan album, and a personal tribute to Shyamdas. It is an act of gratitude from a former bandmate to a teacher.

Wonderville (2017) followed, continuing his solo output.

Return to the Sacred (2020) was recorded in India and the USA and features original compositions in English and Sanskrit. The pairing of languages matters: Sanskrit connects the work to the lineage of traditional chant, while English allows his own voice and experience to enter the practice directly.

Life + Death is his fourth solo sacred chant record, written and recorded between 2023 and 2025 across India and the USA. Three of its songs were born on a Panchakarma retreat in South India, the traditional Ayurvedic program of cleansing and renewal. The closing song, "I Am Dying," came to him in a dream. The album's title and that final track suggest a willingness to face mortality within devotional song, rather than around it.

The Current Chapter

Bauer continues to travel, leading kirtan and bhakti programs and offering I Ching and coaching sessions both in person and online. Life + Death, the product of two years of writing and recording across two continents, represents his most reflective statement to date. Its themes of endings, transformation and surrender fit naturally alongside the I Ching, itself a book about change.

His online offerings have also widened his reach beyond those who can attend a live gathering. With 5,781 followers on Spotify, his audience is modest in scale, but it reflects the character of the field: a community built around practice and participation more than streaming numbers.

Cultural Significance

Kirtan has grown in the West over several decades into a distinct musical and spiritual culture, and Bauer belongs to the generation that learned directly from its early practitioners. His significance lies partly in that continuity. Having played alongside Krishna Das and Shyamdas, he carries forward a lineage of devotional singing while bringing his own sensibility to it.

He reaches people who come to sacred sound seeking something other than entertainment: yoga practitioners, meditators, those facing transitions or loss, and those drawn to the reflective traditions of the I Ching. His approach, gentle, grounded and unhurried, offers an invitation instead of a performance.

In a musical landscape that often prizes volume and novelty, Adam Bauer's work stands for a quieter proposition: that singing together is among the oldest ways humans have of being close, and that a life, including its ending, can be met with devotion.
