Where This Release Sits in Adam Bauer's Arc

Adam Bauer came to his own voice by a long road through other people's music. He played bass with Krishna Das and later with Shyamdas, and he credits both with nourishing his love of sacred sound and the yoga of devotion. His three albums of devotional music trace a steady widening of that foundation: Shyam Lila (2014), a personal tribute to Shyamdas; Wonderville (2017), a collection of new chants and one cover, produced with Ben Leinbach; and Return to the Sacred (2020), recorded in India and the USA with musicians from both countries. A newer album, Life + Death, follows these.

I Am Dying arrives in 2026 as a single, one track, released on September 9. It is a small container for a large subject. Where the albums gather many chants into a body of work, a single lets one thought stand alone. Its title is blunt, even startling, and it sits naturally beside the life-and-death territory his newer work explores. I can't speak to its lyrics, arrangement or credits beyond what the release itself shows, so this guide focuses on what the title, the artist's established style and the single format invite you to listen for.

Sonic Character

Bauer's signature palette is a warm baritone voice paired with harmonium, delivered in a gentle, grounded style. Expect that foundation: a voice that doesn't push, a reed instrument that hums beneath it like breath made audible, and a pace that favors patience over drama. Kirtan traditionally builds through repetition and gradual lift, and Bauer's approach is more hearth than spectacle.

The mood to anticipate is intimate rather than theatrical. A title like I Am Dying could invite heaviness, but his bhakti orientation suggests a different register: acceptance, tenderness and devotion held in the same breath as mortality. Listen for whether the music comforts or confronts, and notice how the harmonium sustains the space around the words.

The Track Worth Naming

"I Am Dying" is the only track, so the whole release rests on it. What makes it worth your attention is the directness of the statement. Most devotional music reaches toward the divine through names and praise; a song that begins from the plain fact of impermanence asks the listener to meet that fact first. Pay attention to how the voice treats the phrase. Whether it is spoken, sung, repeated or softened, the delivery will tell you the spirit of the piece. With a single track there is nowhere to hide and nothing to skip, which is part of its power.

Its Place in the Tradition

Bauer works within bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and kirtan's call-and-response lineage, which he absorbed directly from two of its best-known Western-facing practitioners. Within that tradition, contemplating death is not morbid. It is old, central work: devotional paths across India have long used impermanence to loosen attachment and deepen love. I Am Dying can be heard as part of that contemplative thread, filtered through a contemporary, Western-born kirtan voice rather than a classical one.

It also borders on ambient and meditative music in its patience and spaciousness, though its roots are in song and devotion rather than texture alone.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This release will resonate most with listeners already moving through thresholds: grief, illness, caregiving, the loss of a parent or friend, a midlife reckoning, or simply a new awareness that time is finite. It will also suit longtime kirtan practitioners curious about Bauer's more recent turn toward life and death as subject matter. If you come to devotional music for solace rather than celebration, this is for you. Listeners who want upbeat, communal chanting may find it quieter and more inward than expected.

Close Listening Recommendation

Give it a single, uninterrupted sitting, ideally in the evening, with headphones or in a quiet room. Because it is one track, treat it like a ritual rather than background: dim the light, silence your phone, and sit or lie down. Listen once without trying to analyze anything, letting the harmonium and voice do their work. Then play it again and attend to the details: where the breath falls, how the voice settles, what changes and what stays constant.

Afterward, allow a few minutes of silence before returning to your day. With a piece like this, the stillness that follows is part of the listening.
