Inspire Your Children to Listen Through Personal Example

Parenting advice has often hinged on authority: make your children listen to you. But there's a quieter, more effective path. The true authority in a family doesn't come from demanding attention or compliance—it comes from being someone so genuinely developed, so clearly aligned with what you're teaching, that your children look at you and think what Sadhguru frames as the ultimate compliment: "Wow, my father is a superstar. I want to be like him."

Become Someone Worth Listening To

The conventional parenting script reverses itself here. Rather than demanding that children listen, the teaching suggests becoming a living example of the qualities you hope they'll develop. This is fundamentally about embodying what you're trying to teach—not preaching it, but living it so clearly that emulation becomes the natural response.

When demand enters the picture, something shifts. The moment you insist that someone listen to you, the interaction collapses from teaching into power struggle. Sadhguru notes this plainly: "You never tell anybody look at me, listen to me." Instead, "Speak in such a way that they will listen to you rather than demanding it because the moment you demand it, it becomes ugly. Very ugly." The ugliness is the death of genuine connection. When a child is forced to comply, they're not being influenced—they're being controlled, and they know it.

There's a second move, equally important: listen to your children in return. This isn't about validation or treating every word as truth. "Maybe they will talk a lot of rubbish but in between there will be some gems of wisdom." The invitation is to remain open enough to catch those gems, rather than filtering everything through your role as authority. If your child genuinely believes they're smarter than you, perhaps they are. The point isn't to surrender your wisdom but to create a relationship where wisdom circulates both directions.

This shift—from demand to modeling, from control to inspiration—requires inner work. You have to become someone worth listening to. That's the harder path. But it's the one that creates genuine influence instead of mere compliance, and relationship instead of hierarchy.

Where to Go From Here

Sadhguru's full teachings on presence, consciousness, and family dynamics offer deeper context for how this modeling happens in practice. His Sadhguru 360 podcast series and longer teachings explore the foundations of genuine influence and the role of presence in all relationships.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Become someone worth listening to by genuinely embodying the qualities you want them to develop. When a child sees their parent as a "superstar"—someone they genuinely admire—they'll naturally want to hear what they have to say, without you ever having to demand it.
Listen to them. You might be wrong about what they know. Even if they mostly talk nonsense, there are gems of wisdom in there. Remaining open teaches them that their voice has value and that learning flows both directions.
Demanding obedience turns the interaction into a power struggle. The moment demand enters, the teaching collapses and the relationship becomes about control rather than genuine influence or connection.
