Tracks (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Garth Stevenson: A Listening Guide

Garth Stevenson is a composer and double bassist raised in the mountains of Western Canada. He carries his instrument into forests, beaches, deserts and polar regions and records unaccompanied pieces on site. Tracks (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a three-track release dated 3 March 2015. It is drawn from film music, which makes it one of the shortest ways into his world.

Where It Sits in Garth Stevenson's Arc

The catalogue runs from Alpine (2007) through Flying (2011) to Voyage (2016). Several film and documentary soundtracks sit in between, and this 2015 release is one of them. It falls between Flying and Voyage, in the years when the solo bass-in-place method was already established and was being carried onto the screen.

It is not the core of his solo work. For a full-length statement of the method, Voyage is the usual recommendation. But three tracks is an easy commitment. If you want a sample before you take on a complete album, this is the sample.

Sonic Character

The foundation is unaccompanied double bass with minimal processing. The instrument's woody attack, bowed sustain and plucked textures sit close to how they sound in a room. Stevenson's approach, as his bio describes it, is to perform in the location and let wind, water and natural reverb inform the playing. He does not layer or synthesize environmental sound afterward. The space answers the bass, and both are part of the take.

Expect slow pacing and sparse arrangements. A phrase can hold for a long stretch before the next arrives, and the silences carry weight. No sung voice or lyrics are credited, so the music is wordless. Because this is screen work, the restraint serves a story, but the temperament is the same as on his solo records: patient, spacious and more concerned with atmosphere than with display. The mood is contemplative, sometimes austere, and never hurried.

What to Listen For

I can't verify individual track titles from the material available, so I won't name them here. Instead, treat the three tracks as a compact study and listen for these things in each:

  • The low register. Notice how the bass holds a note and what the room does to it as it fades. Headphones bring this out best.
  • The gaps. In music this sparse, the pauses are structural. Notice where a phrase ends and how long the quiet lasts before the next one.
  • Bowed versus plucked. Bowed passages sustain and swell, while plucked ones are dry and percussive. Hearing how Stevenson moves between them is the quickest way to understand his phrasing.
  • The sense of place. Even in a soundtrack setting, the recordings carry the feel of an open acoustic space rather than a studio booth.

Listening this way will tell you more about the album than any single standout moment.

Its Place in Tradition

This is not devotional music, and it should not be filed under bhakti or kirtan. No named lineage, teacher or school is documented for Stevenson, and assigning him one would be invention. The honest frame is contemplative listening, somewhere between mindfulness practice and nature observation. His training is in music performance, and the stated roots of the work are backcountry hiking and environmental observation.

Within the wider ambient and meditative field, he stands apart. Many artists add field recordings or synthesized environments in post-production. Stevenson plays in the place and leaves the ambience unprocessed, so the result sounds less like a produced ambient record and more like a field notebook kept in sound. Here that approach meets film scoring, where the same textural restraint supports images.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album suits listeners who already value stillness: people with a mindfulness or meditation practice, walkers and hikers, and anyone who likes to unwind with a single quiet instrument rather than a full texture. It also suits newcomers who are curious about Stevenson and want a short, low-risk introduction before committing to Voyage or Alpine.

It is a poor fit for anyone who wants rhythm, a melodic hook or conventional song structure. The bass is unaccompanied and the pacing is slow, so the music can feel formless at first, which is intentional. It also won't work as background noise for a party or a workout. Because the environment is part of each piece, listeners who want seamless, filled-in sound may find the space too present.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Give it the whole of its short length without interruption. Play the three tracks in order, in the evening, with headphones and the lights low. Keep the volume modest. The aim is to hear the room as much as the instrument, and a loud level flattens that.

Listen once with no task in mind. Then listen again and follow only the decay of each note into silence. Laptop speakers will make the low end thin, so avoid them if you can.

If the album draws you in, move on to Voyage, a full 13-track album that shows the solo bass-in-place method at length. For the live side of his practice, his website, garthstevenson.com, is the source for details on Music Meditation Hikes and events.
