From Folk Songwriter to Kirtan Singer

Brenda McMorrow is a Canadian devotional chant and kirtan artist whose work sits at an unusual crossing point: the intimacy of the acoustic singer-songwriter tradition on one side, the call-and-response practice of Sanskrit mantra on the other. Her own description of what she makes is "mantra medicine music," and she speaks of weaving a "healing and uplifting tapestry" with her audience. Her home is Guelph, Ontario, when she is not travelling.

She did not begin in devotional music. She started as a folk and pop singer-songwriter, and her early work included time with the 1990s London band Julia Propeller. The documented record of her earlier life is thin, and what follows concentrates on what is known: a musician with a songwriter's training who eventually found that her craft could serve something older than the pop song.

The Turning Point

In 2004, at a yoga workshop, McMorrow took part in her first Sanskrit chant, Om Namah Shivaya. She has described the moment plainly: "All I knew was that every cell in my body started vibrating, and I felt absolute joy."

The remark is notable for what it leaves out. She does not claim a theology or a conversion, only a physical, immediate response. Soon afterward she traveled to India, and there she began combining her own songwriting with ancient Sanskrit chants. That combination, begun in those months, is the path she has followed since, now across more than two decades.

What She Is Known For

McMorrow's core contribution is a particular balance. Kirtan, the call-and-response form in which a leader sings a phrase and the room sings it back, is often associated with big, ecstatic gatherings. Her approach is quieter and more interior. She sings and plays acoustic guitar, joined by a rotating group of guest musicians, and the emphasis falls on clarity of voice and economy of language rather than sonic abundance.

Sanskrit mantra and kirtan form the foundation. Around them she places Latin American medicine songs and her own English lyrics, so that a program might move between an ancient phrase and an original song without a sense of seam. Yoga Journal praised her "knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics," a line that captures the songwriter's discipline underlying the devotional material. Ram Dass offered a shorter endorsement: "Brenda has a gift."

Her work is also not strictly a transmission of one devotional tradition. It draws on bhakti practice, folk songwriting and Latin American medicine song in dialogue, and it is best understood as an eclectic conscious-music practice rather than a classical Hindu one.

Recordings and Projects

McMorrow is a featured artist on the White Swan Records roster and has six albums credited in her biography. Her recent catalog, which includes releases from 2020 onward, includes:

  • Ruminations of Shantimaya (2020), a spare, meditation-friendly collection often suggested for yoga and seated practice.
  • The Paramahamsa Mixes (White Swan Taking Flight) (2021), remixes that carry her vocal work into ambient and electronic settings.
  • SHE RISES (2023), a fuller-sounding set of Sanskrit-based devotional songs.
  • Songs From The Sun (2024), which balances original English songwriting with mantra and is commonly recommended as a first listen.
  • Ceremonia Del Amor (2024) and 7 Caminos (2025), which bring Latin American and medicine-song material forward.
  • Mantra Lullabies (Dreamtime Re-Imaginings) (2025), reimagined chants in a softer, dreamlike production.

Singles such as Gayatri, Lokah Samastha and Aham Prema also appear in her repertoire.

She has shared festival stages with Krishna Das and Snatam Kaur, been accompanied by Grammy-winning cellist David Darling, and appeared as a guest musician with kirtan artists including Jai Uttal, David Newman and Mirabai Ceiba. Her work has taken her to Bhakti Yoga festivals and events across North America, Europe and Asia.

The Current Chapter

McMorrow's recent years have been productive. The releases between 2023 and 2025 show an artist widening her palette: the fuller devotional production of SHE RISES, the Latin American emphasis of Ceremonia Del Amor and 7 Caminos, and the lullaby-like textures of her latest record. She continues to perform in an unusually varied set of rooms: yoga studios, performance halls, churches, private homes and outdoor festivals.

She is also a graduate of the DevaTree School of Yoga's 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Program, and she brings yoga into her workshops and retreats. This makes her offerings something more than concerts. Singing, breath and movement are treated as parts of one practice, with the voice as the thread.

Cultural Significance

Kirtan has traveled a long way from its devotional roots in India to yoga studios and festivals across the West, and the artists who carry it have often leaned toward the communal and the cathartic. McMorrow represents a different strand: one in which the listener is invited to slow down. Her pacing is meditative, her arrangements restrained, and her lyrics economical. Her music is not designed for high-energy movement or background productivity; it asks for attention.

That makes her a natural presence for yoga practitioners, meditators and people curious about mantra who might be put off by louder, more ecstatic formats. Her English-language songs offer a way in for listeners who do not know Sanskrit, while the chants invite them to meet the tradition partway. Her collaborations, from David Darling's cello to the remixed territory of The Paramahamsa Mixes, show an artist willing to let the work travel across genres.

Her significance, then, is less about scale than about craft and tone. In a field where devotional music can tip into spectacle, McMorrow works from the premise that a well-made song and a well-sung mantra can do the same quiet work. The praise from Yoga Journal and Ram Dass points to the same thing: a gift for saying a great deal with very little.
