The Best Place to Start: Songs From The Sun (2024)

Begin with Songs From The Sun. It is the most balanced introduction to Brenda McMorrow because it pairs English-language original songs with Sanskrit mantra, in a more contemporary production than her other albums. You hear her voice and her songwriter's instincts first, then the tradition she works within. Her background is in folk and pop songwriting, including the 1990s London band Julia Propeller, and this album makes that clearest. It runs eight tracks, so it is easy to finish in one sitting.

Where to Go Next

SHE RISES (2023). Ten songs that blend devotional depth with a more fully produced sound. It is a good second step because it leans further into Sanskrit chanting without assuming you know anything about it.

Ruminations of Shantimaya (2020). Nine tracks of mantra and English originals, recorded with acoustic clarity. This is the one to choose if you want her sparest, most meditative side, and it pairs well with yoga or seated practice.

Mantra Lullabies (Dreamtime Re-Imaginings) (2025). Familiar chants in dreamlike, textured arrangements. It suits restorative yoga and winding down.

If you are curious about the Latin American medicine songs she weaves in, try Ceremonia Del Amor or 7 Caminos. If you are wary of chanting, The Paramahamsa Mixes (White Swan Taking Flight) offers ambient and electronic remixes of her vocal work.

What to Expect

Expect restraint. Her voice is warm and close, and the base is acoustic guitar, often with harmonium or tanpura. Guests such as Grammy-winning cellist David Darling add color without crowding the song. The pacing is slow and the arrangements leave space. Many of the Sanskrit pieces are short phrases repeated, such as Om Namah Shivaya, Gayatri, Lokah Samastha and Aham Prema. The repetition is meant to work on you through the body more than the intellect. Yoga Journal praised her "knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics," and that is a fair preview.

Common Misunderstandings

Expecting big-room kirtan. She has shared festival stages with Krishna Das and Snatam Kaur, but her recorded work is not a five-hundred-person singalong. Its energy is interior rather than ecstatic.

Treating it as background music. It is not workout or party material. It rewards attention, or at least a quiet room.

Assuming you need to understand Sanskrit. You don't. The albums are built so the sound can reach you before the meaning does, and the English originals give you something to hold onto.

Assuming it is strictly traditional Hindu bhakti. Her work draws on bhakti devotion, Western folk songwriting and Latin American medicine songs, and it is more eclectic than a single lineage. She is a graduate of the DevaTree School of Yoga's 200-hour teacher training, which is why her workshops and retreats often include asana and pranayama alongside singing.

When It Lands Hardest

This music tends to land hardest when you are already trying to slow down: starting or deepening a yoga or meditation practice, moving through a transition, or sitting up late with your own thoughts. It also suits listeners who like singer-songwriters and have been curious about mantra but put off by louder, more performative devotional music. If you want motivation or momentum, look elsewhere.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Play Songs From The Sun start to finish, with no multitasking.

Day 2: Listen again, this time noting which English songs and which Sanskrit pieces stay with you.

Day 3: Put on Ruminations of Shantimaya during ten minutes of seated meditation or quiet stretching.

Day 4: Take the Gayatri single, one of the pieces she has released more than once, and sing along quietly with it. Repetition is the point.

Day 5: Play SHE RISES during a yoga session or a long walk.

Day 6: Try something different: The Paramahamsa Mixes if you want to hear her voice in an electronic setting, or Ceremonia Del Amor if you want the medicine songs.

Day 7: Finish with Mantra Lullabies (Dreamtime Re-Imaginings) in the evening. Then decide which album you want to keep returning to, and check brendamcmorrow.com for workshops, retreats and live dates.
