Helen Keller

Helen Keller

American author, disability-rights advocate, lecturer, and political activist whose life — deafblind from the age of nineteen months and yet author of fourteen books, graduate of Radcliffe, and lifelong campaigner for women's suffrage, labor rights, and pacifism — became one of the most-told stories of the twentieth century. Born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, her partnership with teacher Anne Sullivan, beginning when Keller was six, became the foundation for her education and is the central narrative of The Miracle Worker. Her quote 'The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart' remains one of the most-shared sentiments in American letters. She died in 1968 in Easton, Connecticut.
