Sidiki Diabaté

Malian kora virtuoso and griot from the 77th generation of the Diabaté musical lineage, blending ancient West African oral traditions with contemporary Afro-pop.

What is Sidiki Diabaté?

Sidiki Diabaté is a Malian kora player, singer, and music producer born in 1992 in Bamako. He is the son of kora player Toumani Diabaté and grandson of his namesake, Sidiki Diabaté, and belongs to the 77th generation of musicians in a long family tradition of griots, his family being primarily kora players. As a contemporary griot, Sidiki carries forward one of West Africa’s most sacred cultural roles: that of oral historian, spiritual genealogist, and keeper of ancestral memory through music. Growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s, he balanced a love of kora tradition with the vibrant contemporary music he heard around him, from hip-hop and R&B to electronic and various facets of Afro-pop.

Origins & Lineage

The Diabaté family represents one of the most distinguished griot lineages in West Africa. Griots are referred to by a number of names: jèli in northern Mande areas, jali in southern Mande areas, and the name jeli means “blood” in Manika language. His family’s oral tradition tells of 70 generations of musicians preceding him in a patrilineal line. Sidiki’s grandfather, a Malian legend, helped bring the instrument into the modern world by making the first kora recording in 1970, the landmark album Ancient Strings.

His father, Toumani Diabaté, was born on 10 August 1965 in Bamako and his grandfather, Sidiki Diabaté, recorded the first-ever kora album, in 1970. Toumani passed away in July 2024. 700 years ago there was an empire in West Africa called the Manden Empire and that was all of West Africa, with the king living in Mali, establishing the context for the griot tradition.

How it’s Practiced

Sidiki’s musical practice bridges two worlds. The early part of Sidiki’s career was more focused on hip-hop production, often with rapper and fellow griot Iba One, though he also established himself as a skilled kora player. The kora is an entrancing native sub-Saharan harp-like instrument made from a hollowed-out gourd with 21 strings.

In 2014, Sidiki and his father teamed up to record a beguiling collection of father-son kora duets simply titled Toumani & Sidiki, honoring and improvising on ancient kora pieces, the critically lauded album served to introduce Sidiki to the larger world music community. He made his own solo debut in 2016 with Diabateba Music, Vol. 1, a more Afro-pop-leaning album that showed his skill as a singer, songwriter, and producer.

At home every child has a little kora. In the griot families children do not have toys, they have instruments and grow up with them and learn how to use them little by little.

Sidiki Diabaté Today

Since 2015, he has been a member of the musical collective Lamomali, led by Matthieu Chedid. Contemporary listeners encounter Sidiki through streaming platforms, where his music fuses traditional kora melodies with R&B, electronic production, and Afro-pop. His 2016 album spawned hits like “Mama” and collaborations that topped Malian charts.

In 2024-2025, Sidiki released Kora Lover, an album dedicated to his late father and grandfather. The album includes songs dedicated to his grandfather, Sidiki Diabaté, who introduced the world to the kora in the 1960s, and to his father, Toumani, a musical giant who passed away last summer. He tours internationally, performing at festivals including the Mawazine Festival in Morocco and venues across France.

Common Misconceptions

Sidiki Diabaté is not a spiritual teacher or meditation practice—he is a living artist and griot. The griot tradition is not purely spiritual in the New Age sense; it is a hereditary caste system with complex social dimensions. Despite the authority of griots and the perceived power of their songs, griots are not treated as positively in West Africa as may be assumed. Another reason for ambivalence towards griots is an ancient tradition that marks them as a separate people categorized as members of a ‘caste’, and in the worst case, that difference meant burial for griots in trees rather than in the ground in order to avoid polluting the earth.

Sidiki is not purely a traditionalist—he is a real pop star in Mali, playing kora, keyboards, working as a sound engineer with his own recording studio, composing and arranging at the same time. His 2020 arrest for assault of an ex-girlfriend is part of his public record.

How to Begin

Start with the 2014 album Toumani & Sidiki, which offers the most direct window into the sacred kora duet tradition. The duo rehearsed very little or, for some songs, not at all. From there, explore Diabateba Music, Vol. 1 (2016) to hear how ancient griot melodies inform contemporary West African pop. Listen to his 2024 album Kora Lover to experience intergenerational transmission in real time. For context on the broader griot tradition, seek out the Epic of Sundiata recordings by other Diabaté family members, or attend performances at world music festivals where Malian griots appear.
