About This Event

Description

As the year tilts toward its darkest day, many of us feel the pull to pause, turn inward, and meet the season with intention. The Winter Solstice Retreat at Spirit Rock Meditation Center offers a rare gift: a residential silent retreat designed to honor both the outer darkness of December and the inner landscape we often avoid. Rather than rushing past winter's quiet invitation, you'll spend three days in the company of experienced Insight Meditation teachers and fellow practitioners, learning to befriend difficulty and darkness as natural passages—not obstacles—on the spiritual path.

This retreat weaves together the contemplative practices that quiet the mind with gentle, grounding movement. You'll sit in meditation, walk in silence through the Woodacre hills, receive Dharma teachings that illuminate the seasonal cycle, and practice lovingkindness—both toward yourself and all beings. Qigong movement work brings the body into the practice, creating a whole-person experience of renewal. Whether you've meditated for decades or are stepping into silence for the first time, this retreat meets you exactly where you are, offering both the structure and gentleness needed to go deeper.

The heart of this retreat asks: What opens when we stop resisting the dark? You'll discover that within the winter season lives profound wisdom, beauty, and love—waiting to be recognized through sustained practice and skillful guidance.

What to Expect

Each day follows a gentle rhythm: early morning sits, guided walking meditation, nourishing meals eaten in silence, Dharma talks that bridge ancient wisdom and lived experience, and evening lovingkindness practice. The Qigong component brings mindful, flowing movement that honors the body's wisdom and the season's energy. You'll practice both individually and alongside others, creating a field of collective presence that deepens the work for everyone.

The experienced teachers from the Insight Meditation tradition will guide you through complete meditation instruction, meeting you with warmth and clarity. By retreat's end, you'll return home with both a grounded meditation practice and a transformed relationship to winter, darkness, and the renewal they offer.
