Description
Voice of the Soul: Finding Harmony Within is a kirtan retreat and yoga vacation program on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, led by the kirtan artist Girish. Over four days, it brings together chanting, mantra, breathwork and shared singing. It suits anyone drawn to devotional music who wants to sing in a group, whether or not they have ever chanted before.
What to Expect
The program is built around sacred sound, mantra, presence and breath. Girish guides the group gently through call-and-response chanting, breathwork and shared experience. The aim is the joy, healing and freedom that come when we give voice to what lives within us. Rhythm and devotion meet here, and the emphasis is on listening and feeling as much as on singing.
Nothing is performed at you. In kirtan, the group's response is part of the music, so each person's voice matters to the whole. The pace is unhurried and the atmosphere is open and welcoming.
For those who want to keep going, the program leads directly into the Kirtan Evolution Retreat, a second four-day gathering on the island. That retreat invites participants to explore harmonium, guitar, drums, keyboard, or simply the sound of their own voice.
About Girish
Girish is a kirtan artist who leads call-and-response chanting, live music and workshops. His work treats music and mantra as a path to joy, healing and freedom. He plays live music alongside yoga classes, teaches chant workshops, including multi-day chant camps, and guides retreats built around chant, rhythm, breath and shared singing.
A Sacred Choir sits at the heart of his gatherings. Every voice is welcome in it, and the group's response becomes the heartbeat of the practice. For people who want to go deeper musically, his retreats offer simple guidance on harmonium, guitar, drums and keyboard. His work also reaches into sound healing, including Attuned Soundscapes, which are customized healing soundscapes tuned to a person's own singing bowls.
The Setting
The program takes place on Paradise Island, part of New Providence in the Bahamas. The Kirtan Evolution Retreat that follows is held at Shivananda Yoga Retreat on the island, which the organizers describe as one of the most pristinely beautiful and sacred places on the planet. Many participants pair the two gatherings into a single extended stay.
Before You Go
No musical experience is needed. The only requirements are a willingness to listen, to feel and to open. If you play harmonium, guitar, drums or keyboard, or would like to learn, the retreat that follows welcomes players at every level. If you prefer to bring nothing but your voice, that is enough.
