Description
The Science of Breath is an online breathwork workshop on the anatomy and physiology of breathing, led by Deane Juhan. It is designed for bodyworkers and movement therapists of all kinds, and it takes place live over Zoom in a two-hour session on Pacific Time.
What to Expect
Full breathing engages almost all of the body's skeletal muscles, and the movement of gases through the body engages the circulatory system, our most extensive group of autonomic muscles. Breath also sits between the conscious and unconscious mind: voluntary when we choose it, involuntary when we are busy with something else. We repeat this tidal pattern more than 4,000 times in 24 hours, which makes it the most habituated muscular sequence of our lives. How we have learned to breathe, consciously and unconsciously, sets the foundation for all other movement.
In this workshop, part of Deane Juhan's Dynamic Anatomy teaching, the group examines the anatomy and physiology of breath. The session draws on new research and decades of hands-on experience, and aims to offer fresh images, language and concepts for understanding the anatomical, physiological and philosophical sides of body, mind and spirit. One past participant, a Trager practitioner and yoga instructor, praised the class for its extensive slides and for the way it deepened what she could explain to her clients.
The session runs from 2:30pm to 4:30pm Pacific Time.
About Deane Juhan
Deane Juhan trained in residence at Esalen Institute from 1973 to 1990 and has worked as a professional bodyworker for 30 years. He is a Trager practitioner and instructor with a private practice in the Berkeley area. He is the author of "Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork" and "Touched by the Goddess: The Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Dimensions of Bodywork." His long interest lies in the relations between mind, body and spirit, and in the creative forces at work in self-development, healing and artistic expression. He has taught workshops across the US, Canada, Europe and Japan, combining current research on the body-mind with his years of practice.
