Description
The Art of Awakening is a yoga and dharma workshop led by Katchie Ananda at Sōl Yoga Collective in Rapid City, South Dakota. It pairs Anusara yoga for the body with Buddhist teachings for the mind and heart, and it suits anyone who wants a yoga class that also feeds reflection and spiritual study.
The session is one of a series of special classes Katchie offers from September through March, each exploring teachings from the yoga and dharma traditions. You can come to a single session or follow the series through the season.
What to Expect
Each gathering runs for an hour and a half, beginning at midday. Katchie's yoga is based on Anusara yoga, an elegant system known for being safe and effective for the body. For the mind and heart, she teaches the Dharma, drawing on Theravadan Buddhist practices as taught by Jack Kornfield.
The result is a class that moves between the physical practice of yoga and the contemplative side of the path, so the work on the mat and the teachings on awakening inform one another.
About Katchie Ananda
Katchie Ananda has taught yoga full time since 1991, working as a teacher, trainer and workshop and program developer. She was trained in Theravadan Buddhism by Jack Kornfield, and she co-founded Yoga Sangha, later renamed Yoga Kula, in San Francisco. Her teaching brings together that long experience in Anusara yoga with her Buddhist training.
The Place
Sōl Yoga Collective is a yoga studio in Rapid City, South Dakota, and hosts a varied calendar of classes and gatherings, including ecstatic dance, sound baths, chair yoga and other workshops. The Art of Awakening takes place there on selected Sundays through the season.
Before You Go
The material does not set a prerequisite for this class, and Anusara yoga is described as a safe system for the body. If you are unsure whether the pace suits you, it is worth asking the studio ahead of time. Katchie also teaches a separate longer Sunday workshop series at the studio, Grit & Grace, for those who want to go deeper into the same blend of Buddhist teaching and Anusara alignment principles.
