About This Event

Description

Many people who have spent years on inner work know a particular frustration. You understand why you react the way you do, or you have known moments of profound spiritual connection, and yet familiar wounds, relationship patterns and self-doubt keep surfacing in everyday life. Insight alone has not changed the pattern. Experience the Perfect Inner Companion Practice for Self-Compassion: Move Beyond Self-Criticism & Into Greater Trust and Fulfillment begins from that gap, and asks what helps us move from understanding our inner life to actually experiencing ourselves differently.

The event is led by Philip Carr-Gomm, a psychologist and author who has devoted his life to exploring the meeting place of psychology and spirituality. At its center is a guided visualization he calls the Perfect Inner Companion, which draws on psychosynthesis and transpersonal psychology. As you settle into breath and stillness, you are invited to revisit a past challenge, this time with an unexpected presence beside you. Philip offers it as a way to meet an inner source of compassion, perspective, wisdom and support: something to return to when you feel challenged, overwhelmed or alone, and to draw on when you are supporting others.

Around the practice, the hour explores why, in Philip's view, psychology needs spirituality. Without the deep wisdom of ancient traditions, he argues, psychology lacks a complete understanding of what it means to be human. He also looks at the other direction, the grounding and discernment that psychological understanding brings to spiritual practice and to any spiritual guidance you offer others. He discusses spiritual bypassing, the moment when spiritual practice is used to sidestep real inner work, and how to notice it both in yourself and in the people you support. And he traces conditioning back to its roots, including how personality, childhood, karma and reincarnation shape a person.

The event speaks to thoughtful seekers and equally to practitioners: psychologists, psychotherapists, counselors, coaches, healers and spiritual directors who want what Philip's work offers, a psychologically mature spirituality and a spiritually informed psychology. The invitation is to experience an embodied sense of calm and self-compassion, to reconnect psychological work with a sense of meaning and depth, and to come away with an inner resource you can also offer to others.

Philip Carr-Gomm combines inspiration from the worlds of psychology and spirituality to help people access their own wellsprings of happiness, creativity and meaning. His work is rooted in the nature spirituality of Druidry, and he previously served as Chief of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. He also draws on his training in psychology, psychosynthesis psychotherapy and sophrology, and he is the founder of the Sophrology Institute. In his talks and workshops he works imaginatively with conversation, plant and animal oracles, music and poetry, meditation and ritual. He has written or co-written some twenty books spanning spirituality, psychology and magic, among them The Druid Animal Oracle and The Druidcraft Tarot, and he has worked in the field of psychedelic therapy with the Synthesis Institute and the ACER Integration Program.

This free online video event from The Shift Network airs live on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 12:00pm Pacific (3:00pm Eastern) and runs for about an hour. Registration is free on The Shift Network's page, and everyone who registers receives the full-length recording, so you can watch later if the live time does not suit you. During the hour, Philip also describes his upcoming 18-module live course, which weaves together Western psychology, neuroscience and esoteric and spiritual frameworks to understand and heal the Self and to support meaningful change in others. It covers defining your goals and intention, mapping what is obstructing your growth, the psychological and spiritual tools to move beyond it, and a path of service, devotion and purpose.
