Wellness Retreat
Description
Embodied Homecoming is a six-night movement and breath retreat on Koh Phangan, Thailand, led by yoga teacher and movement specialist Mike Van Cauter. It blends functional movement with yoga principles, daily breathwork and optional morning meditation, and sets them beside island excursions. It is open to all levels and suits anyone who wants to understand their body better and leave with tools for everyday life.
The retreat is Mike's first in Thailand, and a personal one. He lived in the country for several years, and his Thai mother's spiritual wisdom shaped his own mindfulness practice.
What to Expect
The week is educational and embodied. Workshop-style sessions build progressively, beginning with grounding and awareness, then developing strength, mobility and fluidity. Functional movement here means working with how your joints and spine are designed to move, and recognising the habitual patterns that tend to lead to tension or discomfort. Through sequencing and repetition, you work on:
- spinal support and mobility
- joint stability
- nervous system regulation through breath
- moving more efficiently in daily life
Each day includes two workshop-style classes, with optional morning meditation and breathwork. There is also a breathwork session outdoors in nature. Around the practice sit three curated excursions: a half-day boat trip around the island with snorkelling, a Buddhist temple visit with meditation and a dharma talk with a monk, and a night market visit. Morning group jungle hikes are part of the week too. A Thai cooking workshop is available as an optional extra at additional cost.
Nothing is compulsory. You can rest when you need to, explore when you feel called, and take part fully or move slowly.
About Mike Van Cauter
Mike Van Cauter is a Brussels-based yoga teacher, movement specialist and retreat facilitator, and the founding teacher of Pop Up Yoga Concepts, which he started in 2016 on the belief that yoga belongs in your life and not only in a studio. He has more than ten years of professional experience helping people understand how their body is designed to move. His work centres on spine health, injury prevention, holistic mobility and long-term physical resilience. Where many teachers focus on form, he focuses on function and explains the reason behind each movement. Before teaching, he spent ten years in an international corporate career, and he came to this work after living with stress, emotional trauma and severe asthma.
The Setting
The retreat is held at Ocean Experience, an eco-conscious boutique hotel run by a local Thai family on the quiet northern tip of Koh Phangan, in Surat Thani. It sits in a private cove on Haad Khom beach, away from the tourist crowds, with a beach garden looking over white sand and jungle. Some of the island's better snorkelling is found right on the beach, and there are nature walks nearby, as well as a fishing village.
Rooms are basic, modern bungalows with an ensuite bathroom, a few steps from the shore. There is no air conditioning, but fans are provided and the sea breeze keeps nights cool. Shared twin and private rooms are available on request, subject to availability. Yoga equipment is on site.
Meals are brunch and an early dinner, prepared by a personal chef. The food is nutritious, rich in local flavours and mainly vegetarian, with two fresh seafood nights for those who eat fish.
Before You Go
All levels are welcome, and the program is taught in English. The retreat includes the yoga and movement program, workshops, breathwork and meditation, cultural activities and excursions, accommodation, daily meals, and tea and coffee.
Flights, ferries and transfers are not included. The usual route is a flight to Koh Samui via Bangkok, a ferry to Koh Phangan, then a taxi to the north of the island. Once registered, participants join a group chat to coordinate shared transfers, and Mike offers guidance on planning the trip.
An optional two-day, one-night extension to Khao Sok National Park, with its rainforest, limestone cliffs and lake landscapes, can be arranged separately and is not part of the retreat price.
