Spiritual Retreat
Description
The Deep Training in Sustainable Compassion and Wisdom is an in-person Tibetan Buddhist-inspired meditation retreat at Potash Hill in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. It is led by meditation teacher Jessica Morey and is for people who want a longer, more immersive stretch of practice in cultivating compassion and wisdom, whether they are already drawn to Sustainable Compassion Training or are coming to it fresh.
What to Expect
The retreat starts from a Tibetan Buddhist view of buddha nature: the basic space of our being, undivided from vast capacities of awareness, warmth, love, compassion and wisdom. These capacities are always available beneath surface consciousness, though often hidden by habits of thought and reaction.
Over the retreat you learn three modes of practice drawn from Tibetan Buddhism, each meant to bring you into harmony with those innate qualities. The first is the receptive mode, which generates a field of care. From that field you can find direct access to unconditional love and wisdom from the depth of your own awareness, so that you become a deeply healing environment for all parts of yourself and for others. In the deepening mode, those loving qualities help the mind settle into their source.
The work is practical and experiential. The emphasis is on learning methods you can carry back into everyday life, in the spirit of the Sustainable Compassion Training that Jessica also teaches in her ongoing online meditation community.
About Jessica Morey
Jessica Morey is a meditation teacher and contemplative coach with three decades of practice. She began meditating as a teenager on retreats at the Insight Meditation Society, graduated from its teacher training program in 2021, and has led meditation retreats since 2009. Her core practice is Insight Meditation, with primary training in the Burmese Vipassana tradition, Mahasi style.
Since 2013 she has also studied intensively within Tibetan Vajrayana traditions, including with John Makransky, Dr. Dan Brown and Dr. Reggie Ray. Her teaching draws on psychological insight and skillful communication, supported by training in Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, Needs-Based Communication and attachment-based healing, including Ideal Parent Figure work. Students often find her approach playful and caring, with a focus on bringing meditation into relationships and daily life.
The Setting
The retreat takes place in person at Potash Hill, on South Road in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. Gathering away from home for several days gives the practices room to settle in a way that a weekly session rarely can.
