How is this different from Drala's other lovingkindness-themed retreat?

The Cradle of Loving-Kindness is a silent meditation intensive centered on one quality. This program covers all four Divine Abodes, so expect a broader path through lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Check the full description to see how much of the time is formal sitting versus teaching and discussion.

Will this retreat include tantric or advanced Vajrayana practice?

Nothing in the information provided suggests so. Drala lists those programs separately, such as the Vajrayogini retreat in the Great Stupa. The Divine Abodes are a foundational heart-training that is widely taught outside specialized lineage practice.

How do I register, and can I attend online?

Registration goes through the retreat's page on the Drala Mountain Center website, where Retreats can be browsed by category such as Meditation & Mindfulness or Buddhist Path. Drala offers some hybrid retreats and free online practice series, but the information I have doesn't say this event is online. Confirm lodging, meals, and any remote option with the center.

Description

Cultivating the Wise Heart is a meditation retreat at Drala Mountain Center in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. It is built around four qualities of heart: lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. These are the "Divine Abodes" of the title, and the retreat is devoted to practicing them rather than only thinking about them.

It suits people who want a meditation retreat with a clear focus on opening the heart. That could mean someone drawn to lovingkindness practice, someone looking for steadiness in the face of difficulty, or someone who wants to bring more warmth and balance to daily life.

Common Questions

FAQs

They are lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, known in Pali as the brahmaviharas. In the Buddhist tradition they are trained as qualities of heart, often one after another, with equanimity steadying the other three. The retreat title frames them as practices to cultivate, not just ideas to study.

It is held at Drala Mountain Center in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, a Buddhist-rooted retreat center. The center's programs draw on its mountain setting and the Great Stupa on its grounds. Check the registration page for directions and arrival details.

The listing I have doesn't state any prerequisites. Drala runs a Foundations of Meditation series (I: Establishing the Ground, II: Deepening the Path) for people building a sitting practice. If you're unsure of your readiness, ask the center before registering.

The material provided doesn't say it is. Drala lists silent programs separately, such as the Silent Meditation Intensive: The Cradle of Loving-Kindness, so silence is labeled in the title when it applies. Confirm the schedule and any speaking guidelines with Drala.
