Music Festival
Description
The 50th Ballyshannon Folk & Traditional Music Festival is a four-day celebration of Irish folk and traditional music in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, marking the festival's fiftieth year. It is described as Ireland's longest-running folk and traditional music festival, and it suits seasoned players, listeners, families and anyone visiting for the first time.
What to Expect
The festival moves between a marquee, the town's pubs, its streets and a few distinctive venues, so there is something for every hour of the day.
Thursday begins with the Festival Launch at the Abbey Arts Centre: the official opening, a 50th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition with Barry Britton Art, and the Opening Concert. Traditional music sessions start up in the town the same evening.
Friday brings free daytime entertainment and street performances, then a Festival Marquee Concert and showcase performances, where winners from the next generation of folk and traditional musicians play alongside established festival favourites. Late-night pub sessions follow.
Saturday includes Jam at the Dam, one of the festival's best-loved events, which gathers musicians in Ballyshannon's historic hydro station. Live music fills the town, with workshops, cultural events, another Marquee Concert, and traditional sessions that run until late.
Sunday is for family entertainment, The Legend Sessions, the Festival Finale and the Closing Marquee Concert, with farewell sessions across the town. The Legend Sessions are an annual tribute to the musicians and friends who helped shape the festival over its fifty years.
The evening concerts feature Irish and international artists alongside emerging talent. The pub sessions are spontaneous, with musicians and listeners playing and gathering long into the night. Daytime also offers arts and culture, including exhibitions, storytelling and workshops across the town.
Workshops and Masterclasses
Established traditional musicians teach workshops in fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán, guitar, singing and set dancing. They are offered at varying levels, so beginners and experienced players can both find a place.
The Setting
Ballyshannon describes itself as Ireland's oldest town, and the festival uses it fully. Events are spread across multiple venues: the Abbey Arts Centre, the Festival Marquee, local pubs, the streets and the hydro station used for Jam at the Dam. The streets themselves become part of the programme, with live music, dancers, performers and family entertainment through the weekend.

All experience levels are welcome. You do not need to play an instrument to enjoy the concerts, the street entertainment or the sessions, and musicians are welcome to take part in the informal pub sessions. The festival is run in English.
